The redesign of Hausmans Radical Bookshop to a flexible debate and events space. The proposal began through an investigation in to the future of the high-street in context to the Caledonian Rd, London. As many high streets suffer in Britain due to competition from supermarket chains and online retailers, the project aims to find solutions and potentialities for regeneration. I started by studying a specific community (Hausmans Radical Bookshop), from there I researched the problems and issues in search for a solution and proposal. Hausmans is a small bookshop ran by a team of volunteers, which stocks a wide range of political literature from; pacifism, anarchism, socialism, modern politics political zines and so on. It is a non for profit organisation ran by a team of volunteers, its focus is not on profits but establishing a place for debate and distribution of radical thought. The bookshop does this by housing weekly in-store events such as talks, lectures, book signings and debates.

Hausman’s had been the centre point of a political scene in Kings Cross back in the 70’s and early 80’s which was supported by a network of local institutions such as the Scala Cinema, Rough Trade Distribution and Mole Jazz record store. At present, Hausman’s radical bookshop still remains in Kings Cross but it’s networks and community have long gone. In addition, the store receives varied turnouts to its weekly events which are held on the shop floor due to it lacking a specific events space. The new design will focus on the bookshops in-store events programme to encourage human interaction through political debate and literary exchange..The proposal provides a much larger more flexible events space to deal with the capacity of a changing events programme, a Debating Chamber and Office/ Incubator space for potential start-up

1. Housmans Radical Bookshop First opened its doors in 1945 and is owned and run by the Peace Movement. Like the literature it sells and the events it hosts, the store employs and attracts people who support a wide range of political movements, from communists and pacifists to feminists and anarchists.

2. Founding Narrative At the end WW1, writer and playwright, Laurence Hausman sponsor of the peace pledge Union suggested a permanent bookshop to promote the ideas of peace and human rights. The shop first opened in the literary area of Charings Cross before relocating to a former post office Caledonian Rd, when the Rv. TC Wills offered the shop to them rent free.

Still occupying the its spot at the Kings Cross end of Cally Rd after 60 years, it now stocks everything from obscure journals and rare fleetsheets to esoteric gay titles.

3. Existing Spaces and Organisations It was within the Housmans building that the CND (Campaign against Nuclear Disarmament) met and created their iconic CND badge (peace symbol), The gay liberation front had their offices above and now the Peace movement occupies the above offices. However, in 2015 these office spaces remain unused.

4. Existing Plan and Section The bookshop is a long narrow space occupying the ground floor and basement of a Georgian terrace. In-store events take place regularly throughout the week such as book signings, talks, debates and lecture. Due to a lack of space these events take place within the shop floor. Table and shelves are moved to the side to make space.

5. Malcolm the volunteer - Problems and Issues Malcolm has been associated with Hausmans for the last 40 years. He first discovered the shop growing up as a punk rocker heavily influenced by the situationist movement. He said in recent years the shop has been suffering from falling book-sales due to the rise of Amazon and online retailers and lower turnouts to in-store events.

He explained that the store was at its height during the late 70’s “when there was a real passion for politics with a belief that one could really make a change within society”. Hausmans was the centre point of a political scene in the King Cross, helped by local institutions of Mole Jazz record store, Rough Trade Dist. and Scala Cinema. Sadly in 2015 Hausmans still remains but it Networks have long gone.

6. Book Shop Trends and Resilience In the age of Amazon and online Retailers, the independent bookshop is becoming a scarcer retailer to find upon the modern high-street. Suffering due to rising rent, competition from charity shop retailers and paperless reading platforms.

Now however, modern bookstores are staying resilient to bookshop trends by putting on mixed events, cafés and selling non book items to keeps doors open and visitors coming. Hausmans has a regular events programme but it doesn’t have the space to facilitate a varied programme. Some weeks a talk may over exceed it capacity, the next could be well below.

9. Move Strategy I propose to relocate Hausmans Bookshop to a larger site up the caledonian road. Proposal - ‘A New Home for Hausmans’ Hausman’s now has the opportunity to make links with present local institutions such as Central Saint Martins College and Kings Place (which houses The Guardian and the Observer newspaper offices). I propose to move the store to a much larger site further up the Caledonian Rd, close to Regents Canal. The new site would take advantage of the park that backs it and foot-flow off the Regents Canal. It would make a direct route from the site to Kings Place and Csm.

External View The external view highlights the outside event spaces. People gather on the roof terrace where informal events can take place elevated above street level. Groups gather around light wells that protrude through the floor, watching back down to the events on the shop floor below.

Anarchy on the shop Floor Internal View - Ground Floor - Internally, book cases are rearranged to form individual event spaces. At the centre, shelves are moved to form a quite space for a talk, whilst in the top corner space has been cleared to set up an independent zine fair. Flexibilty is paramount to cater to a changing events rota whilst allowing for both the unexpected and arranged interactions that take place. The shop floor is a buzz with events, talks, book signings - the proposal aims to encourage human interaction through political debate and literary exchange.

BA Architecture Stage 2 - 2014-15 Final Major Project - Individual Semester 2/3 - 3/3 Location - Granary Sq, Kings Cross, London Tutor - Gregory Ross g.ross@csm.arts.ac.uk This was a self-initiated project focussed around the Regents Canal and the developing sites of Kings Cross, London. Through research and investigation I formulated a proposal to design a student union for Central Saint Martins College of arts. The proposal is focussed around the political activities of a student union encompassing spaces of: the student newspaper, radio station, exhibition space and auditorium, which are brought together to encourage political interaction and activism within the University of the Arts. The programme stemmed from studies of conflict and control found in the surrounding Kings Cross development, which prohibit political protests and demonstrations within the area, even outside Central Saint Martins College. For me this seem to be a huge contradiction and fault that the public and students are not allowed to protest outside of an art school, a place perceived to be open to Avant-Garde ideas and freedom of speech. Predictably, Central Saint Martins out of all of the UAL (University of the Arts) colleges, is the least politically active.

These factors led me to the proposal of a Student Union to encourage and facilitate political activism within CSM, to voice the opinions and ideas of students. Thus, the proposal reacts against the developments laws in order to develop a platform of discussion and debate in response to the restrictions of the development and the college’s context.

Model Makers Workshop

Model Maker’s Workshop The project brief was to develop a proposal, which would speculate how a small scale intervention may lead to a large scale change. The investigations were located in a particular territory, the Regent’s Canal, which operates locally and at an urban scale. It began with an overview, which was physical and psycho-geographical, as well as historical. Rather than a broad analysis of the canal along general themes, as a team we choose to investigate a particular threshold onto the canal. Working in a team on a particular space we adopted various personas with specific areas of interest through which we viewed and reflected on the threshold and it’s connection to the broader context.

Our group investigations led us to a small site wedged between an existing architects office and the Old City Basin Weir. Concluding from our soundings we proposed to design a model maker’s workshop, which would both add on to the existing architects studio and bridge to the other side of the weir.

Section - Model Makers Workshop The long Section shows the placement of the workshops machines in the building. The machines can be lowered below floor level by control of a pneumatic lift when not needed, creating additional floor space. The lift mechanism works in tandem with the bi-folding windows in the roof. As the machines move up and down, so do the windows. The syncing of the feature unifies the building together. As a whole, the workshop operates like the machines it houses.

Photos of the biotec prototypes, of which I installed and maintained during my placement. The shelf acts as a streamlined cloed loop system situated within the windows of office spaces. Pumping water through a series of pipes, vegetation is hydroponically grown so as to diffuse sunlight entering the building. Fish that inhabit the system create ammonia through theier vegetation. The vegetation purifies the water providing a healthey environment for the fish.

The diagrams explain the application and advantages of biotec systems in an office environment. The Aquaponic Roof Garden is a modular vertical garden system that provides cooling benefits in the summer and moderates indoor temperatures in the winter. The system is installed on a polystyrene base to insulate the building in the winter, while the fish ponds provide ecvaporative cooling in the summer. 23

Kings Cross Hotel Professional Experience Part 1 - Autumn 2016 Farrells Architects London Partner - Peter Barbalov peterbarbalov@farrells.com Farrellsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; were appointed by Montcalm to expand their theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re growing customs portfolio by building a flagship Hotel in Kings Cross, London. I worked full time on the project between October & December (2016) preparing the project for pre planning application. I assisted within the design team producing drawings, models and visualisations as the scheme developed from concept to proposal. All elevations drawn and rendered by my self. Models and 3D visualisations were digitally modelled and prepared by myself but built and rendered by the in-house visualizer and Model Maker.

Story Jam Loughborough Junction Exhibition - March 2015 Eclective Collective London http://www.eclective.co.uk/Story-Jam

I worked with Eclective, a young collective of spatial designers, where I was in involved in a place-making project with the local community. I learned how narrative design expertise and intervention could encourage local communities to get involved in urban projects. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As with every project, Story Jam began with an adventure... Site research gave us a taste of local characters and spaces. Once we were awarded the space, (a refurbished public toilet nestled between train tracks, an estate garden and a busy road) we sourced furniture from the nearby community garden (Loughborough Farm), co-operative workshop (The Remakery) and Loughborough estate.

Our friends and nearby organisations helped to collect old jam jars. A locally based graphic designer (Pamela Parker) collaborated with us to identify the perfect visual language. We made oodles of jam, and finally, we developed new story-collecting and story-making tools to unveil in the space. During our week-long residency, we hosted 3 events: an opening brunch, an evening presentation, and a closing dinner. Every day we encouraged passers-by to add their stories and ingredients to the pot, allowing the exhibition to grow all week long.
