Welcome to the 2008 Edition of Free Coffee
Dear Reader, Every Monday, at each Anna Leonowens Gallery opening, you can find NSCAD students flocking to the coffee maker, filling up on the complementary caffeine before heading off to evening classes. Even though a mug of coffee is relatively inexpensive (considering it comes from the other side of the planet) there is something very satisfying about getting something for free. Perhaps the pleasure I take in a cup of free coffee is amplified because I am not accustomed to receiving anything free of charge. I have a long list of things I think should be free—but it is post-secondary education which tops this list, not coffee. Free Coffee is a free independent student publication. The value of our magazine is determined by the content and not the price tag on the front cover. Free Coffee gives students an opportunity to present their art and ideas in a printed document, which is permanent and easily distributed. When we self-publish we are not limited to being known by what others say about us, we can speak out against the powers that be. Does the 2008 edition of Free Coffee represent that idealism? This edition strays aesthetically from the DIY tradition of Free Coffee, with a different level of product afforded by the 2007–2008 SUNSCAD budget. Truthfully this publication should be called Subsidized Coffee—after all, under global capitalism someone at some point pays for everything. In this case, the labour of the artists and committee members combined with union dues from the pocket of every NSCAD student paid for this publication. My hope is that, as a member of the Students’ Union, you feel good about being part of this independent student publication because it is for and about you. — Emily Davidson for the Free Coffee Committee
