“A critical mass of creative workers attracts other likeminded workers and can make local economies stronger. -cityLAB 6% Place Draft

Based upon studies of other thriving cities, cityLAB concluded that a 6% creative population is the tipping point to improve a neighborhood. Creative workers include engineers, architects, cartographers, artists, designers and occupations in the media.

what F L

A program that absorbs the capital cost of kitchen facilities and equipment, provides education and funds to start $ ' " + + ' * ' + for business. When an entity has a promising idea and a sound business plan, an incubator will help launch the company when it otherwise could not. The food incubator will seek applicants from across the &$ ' 3 &7 ' variety of kitchen appliances will cater to any food that an entrepreneur wishes to cook. There will be a seating area for those who wish to attempt restaurant-style eating, but cooks can also make food meant for catering or wholesale items. The incubator will seek partnerships with local entities who can provide fresh, local farm products. The facilities at the incubator will not only give food entrepreneurs a commercial kitchen environment $ +

& spaces to grow their businesses in, along with additional educational spaces for both the selected incubatees and for the community as a whole. The rarity of such a wideranging facility will attract a competitive applicant group.

why F L

Investment and regulation can be prohibitive to entrepreneurs and new business owners. It is illegal to sell most types of products from home rather than a fully licensed commercial kitchen. Such a kitchen is not affordable for the average person. ! + +9 " ; The project will make the neighborhood more visible, as no other incubator seeks to recruit both nationally and locally. ; It is clearly entrepreneurial: residents will have opportunities to create work rather than looking for work. ; This will be a creative hotbed, as competition will lead new cooks to create food that is unique and desirable in the area. ; & &$ ' + " neighborhood. ; Fewer vacant buildings due to newly independent establishments will make the neighborhood cleaner and safer. ; Many residents asked for venues that appeal to all ages; some foods will cater to families rather than just adults.
