READING What makes a good leader?
1
As a political consultant, Martin Armstrong has met many of the world’s political leaders, prime ministers and presidents. Armstrong is also a psychologist and a professor at Surrey University in the UK. As one of the leading experts in social psychology, he has carried out research into ‘real world’ problems, questions and issues in business and government. Recently, he has been exploring what makes politicians tick – what makes them behave the way they do and what qualities someone must have to be a good leader. A reporter from the online science news website, Scientist News, talked to Armstrong about his work. SN: From a social perspective, why are some people born to lead? Armstrong: That’s an interesting question, and not straight forward to answer. It’s not simply down to brainpower and there’s no one effective strategy. However, if we were to take a look at successful politicians throughout history, all of whom had a certain set of leadership qualities. A good leader should search out challenges and keep learning. They must help others, set a good example and they need to be encouraging. SN: You have also been studying Trait theory. Have you learned anything about being a good leader from this? Armstrong: Yes. What we have learned, which we have found fascinating, is that there are certain traits – characteristics or qualities that make an effective leader. These include honesty, integrity and selfconfidence. They should be strong-minded but also admit when they have made a mistake. SN: And finally… have you learned what makes a bad leader? Armstrong: If we look at the recent conflict in the Arab World with the demonstrations, protests and riots that have gone on there, we can understand the type of leadership that doesn’t work. These countries did not hold democratic elections and they were ruled by one person. They had always been told what to do rather than given a choice. They weren’t given freedom to live their lives how they wanted to live. The rulers and governments made decisions to benefit themselves and not their citizens. A good leader never works alone.
