What's in a Name? The Guild School Becomes Joya Rebrand: Spokane Guilds’ School & Neuromuscular Center, a non-profit organization that serves children ages birth to three with developmental delays and disabilities, in March of 2019 became Joya Child & Family Development. Joya’s new name and brand coincides with an exciting period of change happening within the organization, including the investment in a new home that will allow them to accommodate an increased need for their services. The name Joya Child & Family Development, is inspired by the word “Joy” and has roots which mean “jewel,” “gem” or “treasure.” It was inspired by the organization’s conviction that each child is a person to be discovered, revealed and treasured. The rebrand will bring greater awareness around the comprehensive services Joya offers and ensure the families it serves get the care and support they need for their children in the crucial first three years of life, when therapy and counseling are most effective. Providing Services During COVID: As you can imagine, it has been a very stressful time for families who rely on Joya for vital birth to three services. Many of these families are already isolated by the nature of their children’s needs and interrupting or delaying services only exacerbates the problem. While social distancing is an effective way to help stop

the spread of COVID-19, it creates barriers to providing the essential therapies the children need. It could have easily been a dead-end for services, but instead, Joya’s amazing staff has done what they do best – finding hope where others find none. Since March, Joya families and staff have engaged in 5,831 telehealth sessions. 76 new children have been enrolled in their program and 38 children have graduated. COVID has not stopped Joya from being there to help children and families thrive, despite the obstacles it has placed in front of them. Capital Campaign: In 2017 Joya purchased the former St. Joseph Family Center in the heart of the University District. Anticipating their lease ending at the current location on Garland, Joya leadership embarked on its first-ever capital campaign. Their new home will allow Joya to double enrollment from 300 to 600 children annually. Located near two prominent medical schools and five Universities, this site gives Joya the opportunity to collaborate with even more therapists, researchers, teachers, clinicians and social workers to deliver the most comprehensive care for children and families, and to train students who study in Spokane’s University District to be the early intervention leaders of tomorrow. The $18.5M campaign is set to break ground in March 2021. Joya’s next critical milestone is to secure $2.6M in funds to be able to break ground as planned. Streaming Technology Throws a Lifeline to Spokane's Live Music Community

M

usic nourishes our souls by connecting us to happy memories with people we love and places and times we will never forget. Live music takes these experiences to new levels, stirring up deep emotions in our interpersonal spaces and creating curiosity and awe beyond what recorded music can equal. We are hard-wired to respond to live music. Regrettably, the current pandemic and the restrictions it creates make it impossible for us to gather in large groups to enjoy music. In order to find an avenue to both play and be heard, many Spokane musicians have decided to go online and provide live streamed concerts.

Logan Richardson, The Black Art Jazz Collective, among others. Bade-McMurphy explained, “These musicians are really world-class. Everyone can visit us on-line and listen, and eventually come to the concerts in person and listen. They will be really happy that they did. Without a doubt, live music soothes the soul, especially right now.” Imagine Jazz also has hands-on workshops based around their live concert schedules which are available to anyone at any skill level and of any age. For detailed information, go to the Imagine Jazz website: https:// imaginejazz.org/.

One outstanding example is Imagine Jazz, founded by musician Rachel Bade-McMurphy, which brings top-level jazz talent to Spokane. Thanks to grant support from Spokane Arts, Imagine Jazz is able to stream musical offerings online, and to assemble an amazing guest artist series for 2021. To further fan the flames of Spokane’s vital jazz scene, Bade-McMurphy organized a weekly concert series last summer that she entitled “Live at the Monroe Room.” Her entrepreneurial spirit was thus able to support 7 different acts and bring live music to a growing group of jazz listeners.

For a broader view of the dynamic world of online music, here are a few more web sites that can help in your search to find live concerts, both locally and nationally. The Inlander https://www.inlander.com/ has a wonderful search option on the front page that allows you to look at all streaming music and events that are available to Spokane residents online now, and eventually in person. Another excellent source of such information is https://www.bandsintown. com/c/spokane-wa, which allows the reader to see what is going on anywhere and even permits searching by a specific band and/or genre.

“The Guest Artist Series is the key to our mission of bringing jazz to Spokane,” says Bade-McMurphy. “We wanted to create a pipeline in which our local students and community members could learn and benefit from the masters.” Past guest artists have included Jeremy Pelt,

It has been proved that listening to your favorite music can actually lower blood pressure and lower respiration rates. So take advantage of the amazing online offerings this year and who knows – you might just find a new band or a new genre to brighten your smile this Christmas!

3 Reasons to Consider Selling This Holiday Season 1. Buyers who take the trouble to look during the holidays are highly motivated and usually well qualified. Therefore, while their numbers of may be fewer, the buyers coming to see your house are likely to be serious.

Conventional wisdom implies that selling a home during the holiday season is a bad financial decision. In Spokane this year, the truth is the exact opposite! Right now is a FANTASTIC time to sell your house and you might even get more money than you might think! The internet has no seasons, and with a high number of people working from home in 2020 there is no better time for a large amount of people to find your home online, regardless of where they live. Here are some reasons to consider putting your house on the market this year.

2. As a seller, using tasteful and minimal holiday decorations can play on the warm emotions brought about by the season. Evening photos of beautiful Christmas decorations draw the buyer in. During showings, keep the house warm, bake sweet smelling cookies or treats, and consider scented pinecones, candles or potpourri strategically placed in rooms. 3. Year-end buyers are often highly motivated by tax deadlines, retirement issues, lease expirations or even relocation needs. The amount of competition is reduced, so your chances of selling are increased. If you need to sell your home, we can help you benefit from the advantages unique to this special time of year.
