Theirmissionistosurroundstudentswitha communityofsupport,empoweringthemtostayin schoolandachieveinlife.Thousandsofchildrenin SpokaneCountyarefacingdeficitsinSocial DeterminantsofHealth(SDOH)suchashunger, socialisolation,andhomelessness.CISSC coordinatesservices,utilizingcommunitypartnersto addresstheneedsofthestudents,sowhenthey cometoschool,theyfeelmoreincludedandhavethe opportunitytoachieve.Themodeltheyusetoprovide theseservicesplacesaCISSCsitecoordinator(SC) inaschooltoassessneeds,planserviceswithschool leadership,andcoordinatesinclusivecommunity supportsforstudentswhoareexperiencingdeficitsin SDOHthatmaylimitfutureachievement.

OurSC’sconnectstudentstocaringadultsand resourcesfromourcommunitypartnerstohelpthem see,confront,andovercomebarrierstoabrightfuture.

Together,CommunitiesInSchoolsofSpokaneCounty buildsapowerful,inclusivechangemovementmadeup ofpeers,staff,communitymembers,andstudents.

Duringthe2021-22schoolyearCISSChad23 SiteCoordinators(SC’s)servingstudents,families,and communitiesat21sitesacrossSpokaneCounty servingacombinedenrollmentof17,566students, andweprovidedacombined1,742events,activities, andservicesthroughcommunitypartners.Additionally, SC’smentoredtrustingrelationshipswith469individual students.Thisserviceledto5,385individualandgroup supportsaddressingpersonalgrowth.Ofthese students,79%maintainedorprogressedinmetrics relatedtoattendance,academicsandbehavior.

ThecoreelementsoftheCISSCapproach includeunlockingpotential,breakingdownbarriers, andwelcomingstudentstoourcommunities.Theyhelp everystudentseetheirpotentialsotheycanfearlessly unlockitinwaysbigandsmall.Workingtoempower studentstobreakthroughanypersonalchallengesin theirlivessotheycandefinethefuturetheywant.

havingdrugtestsforthemtotakebeforethey'reableto comeintothehouse.Theyfailedenoughofthosethat heeventuallymovedtoanotherlocationbecausethat housinggottaken.Thisisjustasmallsliceofwhathas beengoingon.Allthroughthishehasbeeninclasses, recentlyhada4.0andchecksinwithmeoften. VerneCTomlinsonwasaprosperousWashington farmerwithextensivelandswhentheGreat Depressionsentcroppricesplummeting.Eveninthe depthsoftheeconomicgloomof1938,Verne Tomlinsonsawtheopportunitiesthatlayahead,and resolvedforthegoodofhisfamilytopursuethem.At theageof55,hesoldthefarmandopenedareal estatecompanydevotedtohelpingotherstobuyand sellfarmandranchproperty.

Tenyearslater,Verne’sson,William,returning fromserviceinWorldWarII,joinedhisfatherin business,hopingtoprovideforhiswife,Inez,and1year-oldboy,Robert.Twentyyearspassed,and Robertwasreadytojointhebusiness,whichbythen hadgrownintothelargestbrokeroffarmandranch propertiesintheInlandEmpire.Bythen,however,
