MULTICARE AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS MOTIVATION. Many of us first heard of MultiCare Health System only when they acquired The Rockwood Clinic System and Deaconess and Valley General Hospitals in July of 2017. In fact, MultiCare has its roots in the founding of the first hospital in Tacoma, Washington, Fannie C. Paddock Memorial Hospital in 1882. Its original founding was as much an act of religious and social commitment as it was an act of commercial or scientific motivation.

ORGANIZATION. In the ensuing 136 years, MultiCare has become a dominant force in health care for the citizens of our region, with more than 18,000 employees and a comprehensive system of health care including numerous primary care, urgent care and specialty services, affiliated physicians and a wide range of community outreach programs. Seven hospitals complete their organization: Allenmore Hospital, Auburn Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital, Deaconess Hospital, Valley Hospital, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital — the region’s only children’s hospital and state-designated Level II Pediatric Trauma Center for Western Washington — and Tacoma General Hospital, which is home to the region’s only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. COMMITMENT. As remarkable as this growth may be, just as remarkable is their continued commitment to smaller, community-based organizations that foster healthy living and assist in recovery. According to Dr. David O’Brien, MultiCare’s Senior Executive for the Inland

Northwest Region, “Beyond providing essential funding, the Community Partnership Fund is truly a way for us to live out our value of collaboration.” By collaborating with our award recipients, we are taking a joint stake in our community.” MultiCare’s extraordinary insight, according to Kevin Maloney, Media Coordinator for MultiCare, is that while their size enables them to do some things exceptionally well, it also impedes their doing other things as well as they can be done by smaller, more nimble and more narrowly focused groups. This year, this fund has issued grants to 29 Spokane organizations that meet the board’s criteria: addressing an important need in the community, providing a significant and measurable impact, and supporting MultiCare’s mission, which is “Partnering for Healing and a Healthy Future.” Space does not allow us to list all of this year’s recipients, but for a complete list, contact your agent at Coldwell Banker Tomlinson. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

A NEW MODEL FOR DEVELOPERS

PILOT. Spokane Transit and Greenstone Corporation are

ACCESS. The purpose of the UTAP program is convenience

collaborating on a startlingly imaginative pilot project to provide unlimited public transit to all residents, business owners and employees in Kendall Yards.

– pass holders can take the bus when it works for them and take other modes when it doesn’t. This conveniencebased approach eliminates the worry of wasting a full month bus pass if a person is only likely to take a handful of trips on the bus. Each trip that is converted from a car trip to a bus trip helps reduce congestion in the area, without reducing access.

SUCCESSFUL. The 78-acre development is a successful and fast-growing, mixed-use area near downtown Spokane on the north bank of the Spokane River. In recent years, hundreds of owner-occupied and rental housing units have been built, along with a handful of commercial businesses that support the surrounding area.

CHALLENGE. One of the first challenges the developers faced – parking. Even though Kendall Yards was developed as a walk - able community, the popular area quickly became congested with cars. Those living there were using cars for short trips, and the many visitors coming to enjoy the new neighborhood were driving there and filling the already limited parking lots. Rather than build more parking stalls to accommodate more cars, Greenstone took a more progressive approach and is offering to pay for all transit trips taken by those who live or work in Kendall Yards. This move was made possible through Spokane Transit’s Universal Transit Access Pass (UTAP) Program, which charges users only for the trips they take.

BUS. To get a bus pass, users fill out an online form to show their affiliation with the area: resident, employee, business owner. They can then pick up the pass from the Kendall Yards Visitor Center and use it at their own discretion. Each time the pass is swiped on the bus, the trip is recorded and then billed to Greenstone Corporation at the end of the month.

FUTURE. The program began in October of 2018, and ridership has steadily increased since. Kendall Yards users took more than 3,300 trips in December. During the pilot year, Greenstone plans to pay for the program outof-pocket, but may look to other revenue streams in the future, like parking, to offset the cost.

NOW TRENDING: KITCHEN APPLIANCE COLORS WITH A TWIST TWIST. Stainless steel is by far the most have seen a stainless-topped Viking popular color chosen by consumers as reported by 75% of respondents to a Houzz survey. Stainless will most likely always be a ‘trend’. However, a twist for the stainless look is the matte, or black stainless finish.

SEAMLESS. Classic white kitchen

MATTE. The days of high gloss and super reflectivity are over, but matte finishes in white, black and stainless steel are trending. Yes, white and black are back in high-end kitchen designs, but with a twist. With the increased popularity of ‘colored’ cabinets, the whites, blacks and grays of modern appliances can be used to blend with classic and modern kitchen cabinetry.

cabinetry is timeless, but maybe you don’t want a big silver or black interruption in your cabinet layout. Two-tone appliances are becoming popular to create a more seamless design. Consider a stainless range top with a white front or a white refrigerator with stainless accents. Black and stainless combinations are also available and complement each other nicely. Both high-end and mid-range appliance packages are available with ‘colored’ accents. I

range with purple door fronts.

MATCH. Yes, you may mix and match brands, but everything should match in color. Be careful, however, especially with stainless, as manufacturer’s shades of stainless steel can vary. When placing appliances in close proximity to each other, go with the same brand because the raw materials or paint will likely come from the same source.
