THE CORE DESIGN INTENTION FOR THIS SITE IS THREEFOLD. FIRST,THAT THE DESIGN OF THIS SITE WOULD ONLY IMPROVE UPON THE EXISTING CIRCULATORY FABRIC OF THE SURROUNDING CITY GRID.THE DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS SOME OF THE NODES OF IMPORTANCE, AND RESPONDS ACCORDINGLY. THIS EFFORT WILL HELP TO BUILD THE STRUCTURAL SKELETON FOR THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT BETWEEN THE DELAWARE RIVER AND CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS BLVD. SECOND,THE SITE DESIGN RESPONDS TO THE LACK OF SUSTAINABLE STORM-WATER INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA. CURRENTLY,THERE ARE MINIMAL EFFORTS BEING MADE TO IMPROVE UPON THE CITIES FLOODING ISSUE.THIS SITE WILL ADD 23 ACRES OF “GREEN” STORM-WATER MANAGEMENT IN AN EFFORT TO HANDLE THE STORM-WATER OVERFLOW AND MINIMIZE THE FLOW TO THE EXISTING COMBINED SEWAGE OVERFLOW SYSTEM FINALLY,THE SITE WILL IMPROVE UPON THE EXISTING PEDESTRIAN WALK-ABILITY OF THE CITIES URBAN PLACES. THE INTERCONNECTED NETWORK OF BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN INFRASTRUCTURE HAS ALLOWED FOR EVERYONE TO BE INCLUDED AND GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WATERWAY.

THE NORTHERN REGION OF THE SITE IS DOMINATED BY PUBLIC ACTIVITY. BOTH THE ICE TRACK EXPERIENCE AND THE SPORTS BOARDWALK WILL MAINTAIN SEASONAL ACTIVITY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND WILL PROVIDE THE EXISTING SURROUNDING SITES WITH A CONTINUATION OF PROGRAM.THE ACTIVITY THAT SURROUNDS THIS SITE WILL BRING USERS INTO THIS LOCATION THAT WILL UTILIZE THIS LOCATION TO ITS FULLEST POTENTIAL.THIS WILL CONTINUE TO BE A MODEL FOR THE WAY THAT PHILADELPHIA CONTINUES TO EXPAND AND DEVELOP UPON ITS BEAUTIFUL RIVER.

THE SHATTERED PIER PAYS HOMAGE TO THE ONCE INDUSTRIAL USE OF THE SITE.THE CENTERPIECE OF THE PIER IS A LARGE COR-TEN STEEL PIPE EMERGING FROM THE COAST AND SHOOTING INTO THE SKY WHILE LETTING WATER SLOWLY FALL FROM THE SIDES. IT CULMINATES AMIDST THE CENTER OF THE WETLAND, CREATING A UNIQUE ECOSYSTEM FOR PLANT LIFE TO GROW IN, WITH VARYING WATER CONDITIONS.
