Since the aggressive skate market is so new, therc really arcn't many products specifically designed to increase the performance or effectiveness of aggressive skates. So we decided to give you some tips to satisfy your aggressive skating needs. The firct thing to do is to remove your brake(at your own risk, ofcourse), as it can seriously cramp your le. The next consideration is the $heeis. Pictured below are five wheels that we feel relevant to aggressive skating. COZMO and HYPER both make verl good ramp heels around the 70mm ranqe with hardnesses ransins from 80a to 85a For grinding we generally recommend a smaller wheel ranging from 62mm to 4:1mm, ith all different hardnesses, depending on what you're gdnding. We suggesr vou try sev wheel set ups on your own to detemine which best suits your personal style. Most like to use some kind ofheel retention s) stem (heel strap). Lazzy Less and Crank are the only two worth mentioning righr now. Grind plates are optional and considering there are none made for resale right now, what ou use is very much a matter of personal preference, or ingenuity. The Rollerblade wrenches. coincidentally enough, make excellent g nd plates (as shown in the "After" photo). Two things to keep in mind when coNidering g nd plates: plastic or nylon slides are smoothei on concrete and curbs and metal grind plates slide very fast on mils and coping, but tend to stick on rough curbs and plantels. For all types of skating it is definitely worth having a sood footbed. Most skates have very poor suppofi in that area and foot beds help disperse the impact when launching and redLrce injury. My personal experience bcyond anii-rocker is

limited. Most of what I know regrrding such altemative systems as all little wheels, and, the shifted system (using allbig wheels, but shifting the middle lwo away from each other 1o increase the grinding area).comes from whal I have observed and discussed with those using systems differenr rhlrn my own. The hope is, that with any oftlre systems,

you will be able to grind easier than with the conventional irline set up. The quâ&#x201A;Źsiion is, 'which system will work best for you?". To answerthis we must examine each ofthe sys tems. and test them for lhree specific quali ties: consistency. comfonabiliry. and conve' nience. Obviously.Im convinced that antirccker is the most consistent. lhals why I still use it. Snrce the middle \hcels never touch the grouDd,you're able to pul on lhe smallesl,

hardest wheels you can find. Right now I'm using 44 mm 100A\ by Senate and theyre beautiful. The small wheels maximize clearance and theyte so hard lou can slide over anything, consislently. I took Jess out on a street skate last n;ghl on a ser up idenrical to rny own. 72mml85A Coznror on the end\, and 44mm/100A Senate C Notes in the nrid dle. Jess had never skated anti'rocker before. He was skating shifted Cozmos. and has tried almost everything(little wheels. remember. were his idea). we waxed up a painted curb. aod after about 500 feet ofaccumulative grinds , the mnks of anti-rockerdon welcomed ils newest convert. An argunrent could probably be made that the shifted system is rhe best syslem for vert. simply becausc you donl havc to sacrifice any speed. But on slreel, the shifted system is easily the least effective of the three we're looking at. Since lhe shifted system maintairs alleight big wheels,and big wheels generally run in the range of78A to 85A in durometer, there tends to be a lot ofstickin-q on rails and curbs. especially since 70mm to 72mm wheels seem to always get in the way. Using all eight little wheels, however, would seem to be at leasl as

It's common knowledge that smaller $4reels are slower than their larger brethren. and that skating on l00A's would make ibr a pretty misemble ride. So. to com pensate. some little wheel makers pourtheir wheels of softer compounds. Hypers Midgers. lbr instance are 52mm but have a duometerof 88A. This wheel, allhough a prelll good size. nnd harder than most inline whcels. is still not rcauy hard enough lbr consistent grindirg. Which brnigs us 1() comlort ability. In this respect. rnti rocker may be the wolst. lf comfortability ircludes maneuver ability, it is certairrly the wolst. We an;ved al Tokyo Iniemational Airpon after a heclic depxnure due to the release ofthe first Daily Br€ad", which rcsulted in very little sleep and the sending oforders minutes before heading to LAX. Afterclearing customs. we were assured by Morgan ihat everything was O.K.. even though no one had shown up to escort us to our fina] deslination. After an hour of complele confusion, someone did show up and apologized for her lateness. The next five hours were spent hauling sixteen big bags rhrough the Tokyo subway system and out inlo the countryside. This tumed out !o be a nightmare. as the only way we could move everything uas by creating ahuman assembly line and it seemed like we were changing trains every tuenr! mlnures. Thing. onl) gor $or'e $hen ru11or. be!rl LirLulating that the only way to get to our hotel from the train station was to cany allofour luggage uphill. on aunicycle with one pedaland a flat tire. in a freak rainy season. But it tumed out that thel had taxis. They drove us right to lhe lionl doo. of a luru' rious apartment fully equipped with free Ninlendo. The next day we got to meet the managem.nt ofIZU Biopark, where we would be skrting for the nert t(o weeks. After our briefmeeting $ith ihem and not a $ ord understood, we were trcaled to our first Japanese nreirl. Everyone opted forchopsticks over the usual westem uteniils. After the second day, we had our sho$ s do$ n and sere getting a healthy sized crowd.even !!ith the 50q. chance ofcancellation due to rain.

It seemed like everyda! , different goups of skaters from all over Japan would come to see our show. Wc \ere stoked. There was already a scen€ dcvcloping with vert and street skalers doing shows,clinics and even a contest series. The pcople at the

Biopark were, to say the least,very kind and generous. They treated us to big Japanese style BBQ',s with the most massive assortment of foods we'd ever seen Next. it was offto Manami Machida and an American style theme park called"Cannonball C;ty.' we found out that the Rollerblade dance team had been therejust a ueek pdor. but hadn't gone over ren qell. We were told that it was much to showy and didn l appeal to the Japanese audience.
