Out of the East
2014 Master of Interior Architecture Thesis Site: Tokomaru Bay Freezing Works Ruins, Tokomaru Bay, NZ.
The sheep industry has played an important role in New Zealand’s heritage, contributing significantly to the development of rural townships settled along the coast. Many of these communities suffered in the post-war economic shift, resulting in abandonment of historic sites related to the industry. These historical ruins are being gradually lost through the abandonment and decay of the architecture, risking permanent loss of significant heritage that is bonded to the cultural memory of these rural communities. The thesis investigation site of Tokomaru Bay is a rural town on the coast of Gisborne whose sheep freezing works was closed and abandoned in 1952 and is now decaying in the overgrown landscape. This research investigation examines ways in which decaying heritage buildings can become viable again without losing their heritage qualities. It argues that the abandonment and decay of the architecture is an important chapter of an on-going story. Wabi-Sabi is a philosophy of aesthetics relating to imperfection and transience; In-Ei celebrates the richness of shadow, and Ma investigates the importance of inbetween spaces. This research investigation proposes to apply these Japanese principles to decaying New Zealand heritage buildings as a means of revitalizing the architecture as well as the surrounding community.
You feel the picture is more true to Nature than any Western painting of the same scene would be, that it produces sensations of Nature no Western picture could give. And indeed there are contained within it whole ranges of discoveries for you to make. Lafcadio Hearn, Out of the East

MIA Exhibition - Between
2014 Master of Interior Architecture Exhibition Site: re.SPACE (176 Victoria St), Wellington, NZ.
MIA Exhibition - Between was held at reSPACE celebrating the completion of the Master of Interior Architecture 2014 thesis design and exhibiting a range of student work to the public including professionals who are strongly related to the industry. The exhibition was mainly based on the work done in the research thesis, Out of the East. The space selected to exhibit Out of the East was an existing pool table, utilised by placing 1.2m x 2m printed palight board with a physical model placed in the central space. The layout faced outwards on each face so that people could view the work while circulating around the table. An iPad was embeded inside the physical model as a tool to play a looped digital animation.

In Praise of Shadows
2013 Interior Architecture Design Research Site: The Oaks, Wellington, NZ.
The ‘modern’ historical building of The Oaks Complex (The Oaks) in central Wellington faces difficulty expressing its architectural identity and bicultural relationship to its surrounding context. The building interior is disconnected from the public Te Aro Park and Cuba Mall and not capable of retaining a positive relationship between these sites or the wider context of Wellington City. The design research investigated how interior design can go beyond the boundary of architecture to resolve the disconnection between architecture and exterior landscape. The design identified the potentiality of interior design to express the architectural identity of an exterior and contribute to future New Zealand culture.
We delight in the mere sight of the delicate glow of fading rays clinging to the surface of a dusky wall, there to live out what little life remains to them. We never tire of the sight, for to us this pale glow and these dim shadows far surpass any ornament. Junichiro Tanizaki, In Praise of Shadows.

Casa de su Identidad
2013 INTA411: Interior Architecture Design Site: Wellington Waterfront
The intention of the project Casa de su Identidad (Home of your Identity) was to express the identity of Spain through the design of a national pavillion on the site of the Wellington waterfront. The materiality of concrete floors and timber slit walls explores the theme of conflict between authentic regional identity and a number of autonomous regions which were applied through the interior spaces of the pavillion.

Your shrine Your sanctuary 2012 INTA312: Design Integration
Site: Ninjaflower - Jewellery & body piercing shop, Wellington, NZ. Ninjaflower is a jewellery and body piercing shop; its brand concept was the use of natural elements from the earth. The title Your shrine Your sanctuary derived from the concept of a shop seen as a sanctuary safeguarding the jewellery and treating the customer’s body as a shrine within which to place the jewellery. The sanctuary offers a unique experience to the customer, providing unique pieces of jewellery for their unique shrine. The overall atmosphere of the design is created from suspended acrylic rods representing the uniqueness of water textures derived from individual ripples and bubbles. The rod is developed to enable a range of lengths and by arranging a range of heights emphasising the wave pattern of the ceiling. The product is displayed to the customer by hanging lighting from each rod.

Duality of the Traveller
2012 INTA311: Interior Architecture Design Site: Watermark Project (117 Jervious Quay), Wellington, NZ.
Duality was the main concept throughout the project relating to the characteristics of a hotel as a temporal habitit, where people arrive and leave the place continuously. The design focused on the shift of circulation and vertical transition through voids emphasising the two sides of duality, the arriver and leaver of the hotel.

Japanz Bakery 2013-2014
Site: Shop 26 in South City Mall, Christchurch, NZ. Interior design for a Japanese couple opening a new Japanese bread bakery in South City Mall at Christchurch. Work included conceptual design, visualisation through digital render, plus all technical drawings including plans, sections, and details. The basic concept was to merge the colour pallette from neighbouring tenants (The Warehouse and Whitcoulls) while introducing a new materiality of timber to emphasise a warm atmosphere as a bakery. An L-shaped counter covered by a range of timber in a mosaic pattern responded to the existing tile pattern of the shopping mall.
