PORTFOLIO 2020

Hi Im Tomoki, I’m an architecture student at the University of Waterloo. I am currently working at the intersection of fabrication and design, where we do both drawing and making. I take a hands on approach to design and enjoyexperimenting with new materials and methods of making things.

THE SHED TORONTO, ON

Public library 1B Studio // Supervised by Donald Mackay April 2018 This project began with a fascination for the stockyards and industry which used to be prominent in the area. In particular, the massive structures and machinery which made it possible. The structural elements create spacial opportunities for this post industrial public space for fostering creativity of generations to come

ARRAY OF STEEL STRUCTURES

The project focused on structure as a concept from early on. The structure created spacial opportunities and through the research of the details and connections which comprised the structure it began to form a design language in the project.

CINEMATIC EFFECT HETEROTOPIA

2A Studio Supervisor Derrick Revington // David Correa November 2018 We explored the the storytelling capabilities of film to inspire architectural thinking. It can evoke more intentful emotions and greater meaning in the spaces we occupy. Short film clips of movies were investigated and distilled into the elements that composed them and then synthesized to concieve a radical “City of Today, Tomorrow. Part 1 In Collaboration with: Nicole Chen, Riling Chen, Danielle Grabke, Chris Qiu

The order that gives meaning to our everyday lives and keeps society in tact, can be the same order that drives people to rebel or disobey, and create disorder. Nuit Blanche is a worldwide example where artists express the inexplicable emotions that no reason or order could ever justify and challenges to reconcieve out understanding of the everyday city. The final model was a 60x60x90cm hanging exhibition for the “City of Today, Tomorrow, hung with 12 other heterotopic cities.

NARMADA, INDIA FINALIST-CISC Competition // Supervised by Terri Boake // In collaboration with Riling Chen // May 2018 This project investigates the idea of “Linkage” both structurally and conceptually. We take the idea of bridges that link communities, and create access to an otherwise inaccessible river gorge.

KAISER MODEL BERKELEY, CA

Four month co-op // Gould Evans Architects // Jan 2019 // Kaiser Office Building Presentataion Model This is a 1:200 basswood presentation model. Beforehand, I created test models of key moments, using various materials. Every piece including the windows were hand cut and scored. The floorplates were laminated with millboard to help prevent warping. I was able to stand in the position of being a designer, assisting an architect where it is my job to interpret design intetions of others, and use my creative liberty to express those concepts through design decisions and details in the model.

ICEBERG

177 LAKSHORE BLVD E, TORONTO Fabrication Design Intern \\ Punchclock Metalworks \\ Parametrics for fabrication \\In Progress- Expected completion March 2020 In this fabrication shop, I was tasked to draw and prepare the fabrication of a sculpture based off an inspirational image from the client. Using Grasshopper, I parametrically generated various lofted forms and then point clouds. This allowed me to quickly iterate with and proved to be an effective tool for working with the client as I was able to freely readjust according to preferences and needs of the client and prevented me from having to redraw many complex shapes as the nodes and rods could self generate Preparing for fabrication allowed me to delve into the details of design at a new level. We needed strategies that considered an inner steel structure with welded connections, attatchment to the cieling, and connection points to the outer shell. The outer shell will be partially assembled in shop into transportable panel sizes and mounted onto the inner structure which will be brought in, assembled, and pinned into the cieling.
