SHADES of INDIA Shades of India is a design-led, creative company with an international reputation in home furnishings, leisure clothes and accessories. Best-known for its use of layering and texturing, combining fashion trends and craft, it has won prizes for new products at shows such as Maison et Objet in Paris and the New York Home Textiles show. Founded 15 years ago, Shades of India took the then unusual route for an Indian export company of establishing a brand name in Europe. It now sells under its own brand in leading department stores and boutiques worldwide. Shades of India’s style is international and contemporary but with references to India, fashion or the textiles of Japan and South East Asia.
SUMMER 2010-11 Summer 2010-11 is inspired by the work of the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. The artist’s exceptional sense of colour and strong feminine side really appealed to Mandeep Nagi, Shades of India’s Design Director. “I was struck how his paintings could transform a sea of flowers into a landscape of jewels,” she says. This season’s collection includes a cushion called Klimt, which was handpainted and then digitally printed on silk. The Pastoral bedcover uses a simplified abstract print in two colour options, a soft red and a stone, which co-ordinate easily with cushions that pick up on elements of flowers and foliage. The artist’s use of more masculine elements of structure and line are reflected in the Medellin bedcover, for example. A hand-woven silk in soft grey lines provides the perfect canvas for more graphic cushion styles.
