POD HOUSE In the design of a sustainable terraced house in Cardiff, I created a large open space that housed enclosed private pods. The pods would be small to encourage use of the ground floor living room. While the pods inhabited the volume of the building, some would poke through. Some pods have walls that stop at balustrade level and some pods are only walls on wheels. The house is prefabricated, arriving in three lorries. The walls arrive, then the frame, then the pods. The house shares a new green space at the front, and a raised allotment scheme at the back.

TONYPANDY We set out to record the special places and personal narratives of the people of Tonypandy, a small town in the Welsh valleys. We got permission to do a workshop at a primary school. We asked each child to draw a place that they liked and a place where they felt scared in the town on colour coded index cards. Many children identified a local Pub and an infamous drug taking spot as the scariest places. One child drew a park with a fence where he ‘could go with his mum and feel safe behind a fence’. We presented the project as a chaotic installation.

WOOLWORTHS THEATRE Woolworths was a British institution; everyone has fond memories of Saturday morning visits for pic and mix sweets. The idea was to create a house for culture using the bones of Woolworths. The programmes of the theatre are treated as volumes that sit within the gutted existing building. This creates a courtyard within the building where all the processes of creating a show can be seen by the public; the workshop, backstage and the rehersals. This engages the public with the art of creating a show.

CUP CLUSTERING Our given brief was to design an installation with the theme of clustering modules. Me and a fellow student chose to play with an existing module (the cup). We experimented with changing opacities, depths, widths and jointing. Our finished piece was a canopy of 700 cups and 2200 cable ties. Suspended from above, it was an operable puppet with applications as a wall, roof and enclosure. We projected images through the canopy with dramatic lighting results.

JALOUSIE For the third year summer project we were asked to design a ‘jalousie’; a dividing screen. My design was based around a musical piece called ‘Halasana’ for drum kit and piano that I have enjoyed playing for years. The piece is set around a delayed beat which is very playful and enjoyable to listen to. I decided to pick out the bars of the piece that used the delayed beat and translate that into a structure.

Rules of the game

BUILD COOK PLAY Build Cook Play is a scheme in Ladywood, Birmingham, where the unemployed have an opportunity to learn a trade in building, and while doing so, build their own home and clad it in whatever they want. I worked with the iconography of what a home is and developed different typologies within this framework. The residents can also take part in cooking lessons where food is grown on site, and work with a performing arts centre, acting, singing and building sets.

KOMMUNIKATIONS MASCHINE This is a communication machine in Zurich, where bankers - through corruption or other failings - are kept prisoner and as punishment, must service the building. However this is not a tool for humiliation, but a machine for interface between innovators and the public. The inmates are kept out of view, their tasks, meticulously planned in regimented spaces. The innovators however, are free to interact with the public in flexible spaces. The guest spaces are expressed as timber volumes floating. This is wrapped in a public route through 10 stories - which at ground level incorporates the existing frequent market on the site. The inmates are condensed to a concrete plateau and service tower which has access to all served spaces. The servants tend to a farm where herbs are grown and bees and chicken are kept, this provides food for the restaurant.
