Behind The Scenes Didier Agueh Executive Host and Artistic Director This year I am delighted to announce our partnership with Dropout UK who organise live showcase events to preview upcoming UK talent from various backgrounds of music. The first Dropout UK event is on Thursday 13 February where you can see a variety of music from Indie to Pop. If you are celebrating Valentine’s Day this year we have created an intimate evening for you and your partner. Renato D’Aiello will be playing a number of Stevie Wonder’s greatest hits, it’s all love and promises to be a fun evening. We also spent some time with Renato talking about his love for London and how he became a resident singer here at Primo. You can read all about his musical journey on page 17. In the mean time, enjoy the last of the winter season. À bientôt!
Alberto Sanna Bar, Lounge and ICHI Sushi Manager This winter I have enjoyed the challenge of creating tasty, unique mocktails as everybody is thinking about their health in the first quarter of the year, for me I still enjoy a strong sour cocktail but for everyone on a detox here is a little tip: take all the ingredients of a ‘bloody mary’ without the alcohol and mix together with secret (Indian) spices and a twist of lime. Of course you’ll have to visit us and I’ll tell you the secret recipe. It’s been very popular this month. Other than our Valentine’s evening with the talented Renato performing Stevie Wonder, we will also be celebrating the Cherry Blossom festival that occurs in Japan to officially launch our Sushi Afternoon Tea, so far it has received great reviews from the press including Fabulous magazine and The Handbook. Chef Okamoto has put together a unique selection of sushi, cakes and savoury notes that compliment with our Camellia tea selection or with Sake, depending on how you feel. We hope to see you soon. Ciao

Interview with RENATO D’AIELLO Could you please explain TO us a little bit of your background?
Who would you have loved to perform with?
I was born in Naples and started playing the saxophone at the age of 20. I had the chance to play with a number of bands, songwriters, poets and singers. I was fortunate to meet the great tenor player from Syracuse NY, Sal Nistico (first tenor with Woody Herman’s band), a true legend of Jazz. That was the moment when I realised I knew so little about sound, timing, jazz phrasing and repertoire but he taught me the secrets to great sounding jazz.
Definitely Cedar Walton band, with Billy Higgins, and Earth, Wind and fire.
What are your influences? The first jazz records I heard were by Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Coleman player Tony Scott I continued my journey with the fabulous Rachel Gould (US Jazz Singer). Rachel Gould was my greatest influence of them all.
10:15
PP_Primo_id5.5_Feb-Mar14.indd 19
You have travelled all around the world, so why have you decided to live in London? I did not intend to live here but my heart lead me here in 1999 when I met my long term partner and never looked backed. I still travel a lot especially to Paris to play with my friends in the French jazz scene. Yo u hav e had two month ly residencies at Primo. Can you tell us more about each show? My first residence at Primo, is on the last Sunday of each month. The night is called “Jazz Across the Bridge” and I often have
international artists with me. The second residence is on one Friday of each month. The project is called “We Love Stevie” with the phenomenal singer Roberto Angrisani. We play mainly Stevie Wonder’s compositions with a five pieces band. What’s next for you? Do you have an album on the way? My latest album “Between Two Worlds” is a beautiful tribute to some of the greatest Brazilian composer. The album is on iTunes and Amazon . I have just finished recording my new album that will be called “Renato plays ballads“. Out in March 2014.

Dropout UK is an online music and entertainment publication. The brand is orientated around capturing ‘Indie’ origins, whilst embracing the essence of ‘Young Adulthood’ and re-enforcing popular culture.
T h e S t e v i e Wo n d e r E x p e r i e n c e band was conceived by renowned saxophonist Renato D’Aiello and fronted by Rober to Angrisani, a quintet with strong roots in gospel, jazz and pop. The idea was to explore the interaction between Renato’s jazz solos on top melodies and harmonies of Stevie Wonder’s compositions which offer an inspiring territory for improvisation. Roberto is director of the “Urban Voices” choir which sang at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games and at the recent BAFTA awards.
After her successful night covering the Bond soundtrack, Janine returns with something soulful and sultry just for you. Bringing soul classics from divas such as Chaka Khan, Jocelyn Brown and many more, Janine mixes it up with a little Jazz Funk and some of her own songs.
Here is your chance to see upcoming music in the UK from Pop to Hip Hop.
