Exploration of the home. Designing 7 houses in 7 different context. (Brussels & Oostende)
_ Semester 6 _ Ba65 Bachelor Thesis _ february - june ‘14 _ LUCA School of Architecture
1 house, 7 houses. 1 house but multiplied by 7. So 7 houses. All the same but yet not. 7 contexts. All in Brussels, thĂŠ capital, but 1, situated in Oostende, the royal city. The result of this study, this exploration by design, paper, models etc. is simple; 7 houses.
BRUSSELS&OOSTENDE interior view of concept house
interior view
The program for each one of them is simple and clear. 100 square meter, for a four persons family. A house provided with an entrance, a kitchen, a living space, sleeping rooms, a bathroom. All this thought trough with the one question in the back of my head: how to make a house a home. Extra attention is giving to the context, the materiality and structural elements used in the composition of the building.

7 context
2 of the 7 houses have been developed further into detail. One being the typical row house but in a rather unexpected environment, being office buildings. The second is placed in the royal park of Laken. Situated at the royal park of Laken, the park house is a subtle reference to its surroundings, more in particular, the typology of the row houses across the street. Why designing a new building and more in particular a new facade? Does it always have to be unique? Why just not copy the facade four times and place it right at the wall of the royal park, giving the illusion of a new row house that has been built. The row house equals the city. Situated in the economical city center, the row house is integrated in the elevation of new office buildings, as a trace of the past is left. concept elevation
Keeping the original facade was the first point of importance. Approaching this, reorganization of the inside spaces was made. The existing windows do not reveal the inside spaces behind. The atmosphere of the spaces inside is formed by its structure of concrete beams. Playing with the height of these elements, spaces are becoming more private or more open.

Redevelopment of a Former Industrial Harbor Site HafenCity; Hamburg
_ Semester 10 _ Thesis in Architecture _ january ‘16 - june ‘16 _ Chalmers University of Technology
The design proposal of Oberhafen and its industrial halls is about breaking down barriers to bring people together, encouraging a dynamic space open for all types of activities and strengthen the relationship between private and public space. Besides the creative industry as a main key player in the area and the connectivity of the site, the flooding issue that is occurring in Hamburg nowadays equally influences the dynamics and adaptation of the site. This new urban intervention is designed in the context of preserving and renovating the old industrial halls on site. Although it is hard to fight against the dynamics of the city, this Master thesis is an invitation to a discussion about creativeness and how it can influence and benefit from an urban redevelopment project.

With the shifts in the economy in the past decades, the redevelopment of former industrial harbor sites within an urban fabric became a trending topic in the field of urban architecture and planning. Contrary to the blueprint planning and standardized solutions used in urban architecture nowadays, this Master thesis will discuss how new urban redeveloping projects should take into account the lacking socio-spatial factor. The investigated site within this thesis focuses on Oberhafen, a quarter of HafenCity Hamburg.

HAMBURG

Whilst the city of Hamburg is aiming to develop the branding of the city with prestigious projects, the proposed intervention in Oberhafen is one where the creative industry both influences social space and benefits from the redevelopment. It is the combination of the social and spatial factor that is forming the basic idea behind this Master thesis. By analyzing the site and its surroundings on three levels, (connectivity, flooding and the creative industry) findings form the base for an urban intervention.
HAMBURG REGION
most dense existing creative industrie these areas show the most vivid creative scene in the city of Hamburg nowadays. They are often characterized by their industrial or historical looks and the rather cheaper rents. problem: because of the rising rents in these ‘gentrified’ areas, actors of the creative industry are constantly looking for new locations.

The Socio-Spatial Aspect of Urban Architecture
_ How can the creative industry both influence and benefit from an urban redevelopment project?
An open space that is permanently accessible thanks to the flood protected walkway/viewingplatform. A secondary pathway will defer with the level of flooding. The program can range from small concert venues, art exhibitions, workshops, etc. Possible actor: Halle 424
COMMON OPEN SPACE
The site, called Oberhafen, is a part of HafenCity characterized by its old industrial halls. Due to the presence of, on the one side the river Elbe and on the other side an elevated traintrack, Oberhafen becomes an isolated place. The main challenge is to reconnect Oberhafen physically and mentally with the rest of HafenCity and the city center of Hamburg.
An additional light structure on site could attract new users that are benefiting from completely flood protected spaces. Actors with more resources are investing in the site and bringing in a variety of users and activities. Possible actor: Music reheasal rooms
As Hamburg is well-known for its vibrant creative industry (divided over 11 sub-categories), the proposal for the new design focuses on spaces that could be used by different actors of the creative industry, resulting in a program based upon individual needs and flexible spaces.

TRANSFORMATION OBERHAFEN
The analysis and explanation about the socio-spatial aspect is mainly based upon the theory by Henri Lefebvre, claiming social relations and physical space is always in relation with one another. The ‘lived space’, space that is created by appropriation and by the needs of its users, is from biggest importance in this thesis. This is where the importance of the creative industry comes in. It is about how these small creative businesses use the space according to their needs. A thought-through relationship between the social relations and use of physical space is forming the base for the design. The design is about making an investment for the site, renovating industrial buildings and adding new temporary structures that are minimizing the impact on site.

_ Semester 8 _ ARK141 Urban Experiment _ january - may ‘15 _ Chalmers University of Technology _ By Frederik Vandyck & Tom Uyttendaele
In the suburban area of Göteborg, Högsbo is situated in between Marklandsgatan and Frölunda Torg. The large area around Högsbo is characterized by its open and barely densified areas. Both these elements give us the opportunity to introduce a new node and densify the area with a minimum of dwellings imposed by the city council of Göteborg.

In order to create a node, the idea was to introduce a hierarchy in space. Different typologies in street sections, squares and the built environment should lead to gathering people in the centre. A grid, adapted to the existing is introduced in order to fulfill this hierarchy. By means of integrated transportation, again mixed typologies are introduced. In order to create an identity for the main square, a landmark is designed. Its objective is to pull green, topography, services and dwellings into the new node. All means of transportation are gathered in this landmark.

In order to strengthen the idea of a landmark, the other open spaces are densified, adapting to the existing buildings and in the existing fabric. The challenge was to design this landmark which is almost comparable to a line-city. The horizontal slabs stress the topography and embrace different kind of functions. A hospital, parking lots, a bus stop and the monorail stop are combined in this structure.

Situated in the fictional context of (UN)City, a selection of the most iconic buildings in Brussels, curated by Cédric Libert, this project explores the possibilities of a vertical resident building and a horizontal housing dwelling. The project is a response to the existing structure of the Astro Tower (situated at the inner ring of Brussels).

Exploration of architecture. This was my very first design studio, where architecture and the exploration of creativity started for me. The assignment looked pretty simple. Re-interpret a plan (Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier) without any context, measurements or indications. But is the interpretation of this particular drawing a plan? Or can you look at it as a section, a detail part, a masterplan, .. ? The result is a multiple copy of the drawing seen as a masterplan. The main elements represent buildings that are separated by two horizontal slabs, serving as public space. The buildings are either way ‘floating’, down or crossing both the upper and lower slab.
The Architectural Plan Exploration of architecture. Re-interpretation of an existing architectural plan.
