TOMWALKER BA PRODUCT DESIGN NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY
P O R T F O L I O
WHO AM I ?
Second year BA product design student from Maidstone in Kent. I believe that the way to create brilliant design is to critically evaluate the smallest detail. I design with reason and intent, aiming to create viable solutions to problems with a minimalist, contemporary impression. I love sports, music and films. Always looking to learn and push myself to try something new. Studying BA product design with Nottingham Trent University has enhanced my innate design skills to apply throughout the design process. I channel my passion for designing and creating towards a range of briefs covering a wide spectrum of design. Confident in all aspects of design from problem solving, user-centred research, innovation and sketching. I use these abilities to build concepts and develop ideas into thoughtful products through two and three dimensional design. i always aim to push boundaries and develop amazing products and experiences. I have an appetite to learn, to grow and to succeed. Say hello,

SINO-UK ENVIRONMENT FUTURE DESIGN COMPETITION
CONTEXT
Selected as one of two students to represent Nottingham Trent University out of eight UK competitors, to compete in an international environment future design competition at Jiangnan University in Wuxi, China. The competition was held in April 2015 and lasted for two weeks. Teams of 3 competed to design useful products for the local community from industrial waste. Being part of a positive transition towards a better environment future was a proud moment of my career.

DESIGNING PRODUCTS FOR THE COMMUNITY USING INDUSTRIAL WASTE ANIMAL SHELTERS When walking around Wuxi, we noticed a number of stray dogs on campus. We decided to create some animal shelters, as they deserve a home too. For this shelter we used discarded slats from a plastic blind. We stripped and bent these slats whilst connecting at the base to create a strong organic form.

DEVELOPMENT INDUSTRIAL WASTE Each team was given 3 items of industrial waste to use to create the products. The animal shelters were built using leftover blind slats. The slats were sanded down and bent into position, held b a bolt at both ends to create a solid organic structure, that provided security for the animals.

AWARD WINNERS Our designs won 3 awards and were exhibited at the international design exhibition in China.
PLANT CLIMBERS In Wuxi, space is at a premium. We used extracts from injection moulding plastic to create beautiful, modular plant climbers.

LONGER LASTING PRODUCTS
T H E P R O B L EM Throwing away electrical products is a feat many people are guilty of, designing for longer life had the aim of creating a toaster that could be easily repaired. The intention was to change the throw away mentality of the UK customers.
04
THE EVERLASTING TOASTER
RESEARCH
THE ESSENTIALS Research was conducted including reverse engineering a toaster, to analyse what components are essential and what waste can be removed. The reason people were throwing away toasters was because it was not worth their time to repair them. To create a renewable toaster, it must contain very few parts.

THE EVERLASTING TOASTER
DEVELOPMENT
MODULAR FORMS The main process of the development was highlighting ways to create a modular toaster, allowing each essential component an easy way to be isolated with the view to isolate and repair select components.
04
THE EVERLASTING TOASTER
SOLUTION
THE TRIGGER TOASTER The Trigger toasters name is derived from the famous only fools and horses broom stick scene, in which Trigger replaces the head and handle of his broom stick numerous times. The idea behind the Trigger toaster is that each component can be easily removed and either repaired seperately or sent off for repair through a repair and recycle community. The sleek, minimalist aluminium body is durable and aesthetically pleasing.

PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS
T H E P R O B L EM Pickpocketing of wallets on the London Underground is a huge problem for Transport For London. This conceptual anti theft elastic band is aimed for a promotional product for TFL. Pickpocketers work using sleight of hand to remove the wallet from the victims pocket, this band solves that problem. The ridged elastic band is stretched over a wallet whilst on the underground, the friction created by the band keeps the wallet safely inside the users pocket, meaning if someone does try to pull it out the user will know about it.

COMPRESSION
The compression is used to decrease or prevent swelling. Compressing the legs keeps fluid from pooling in the ankle, calf and thigh. The compression intensity and duration can be altered to suit each individual.
VIBRATION
DVT is caused due to the blood pooling in the veins to form a clot. This is prevented by stimulating the muscles throughout the leg. The stimulation keeps blood flowing and helps maintain muscle.
SENSING BLOOD FLOW
Keeping track of the blood flow through sensors in the clothing allows the user to know when they need to move, when they need to compress the legs and if a blood clot moves they can react fast to prevent a pulmonary embolism.

DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS WHAT IS DVT?
SOMEONE DIES EVERY
5 MINUTES FROM DVT AND PULMONARY EMBOLISMS
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that develops within a deep vein in the body, usually in the leg. DVT is caused from staying still for an extended period of time, such as laying in a hospital bed. DVT usually occurs in a deep leg vein, a larger vein that runs through the muscles of the calf and the thigh. It can cause pain and swelling in the leg and may lead to complications such as pulmonary embolism. This is a serious condition that occurs when a piece of blood clot breaks off into the bloodstream and blocks one of the blood vessels in the lungs.

THE SOLUTION AGELINK
CONTEXT
The solution to social isolation and depression in the over 60's is to connect them together. Research has shown that there are numerous social clubs available for the over 60's, the only problem is that they don't know how to find them. AGELINK is the solution to this problem. The app is ergonomically suited to elderly eyes using soft peaches and blues, along with intuitive simple control. The app connects the elderly to local clubs and activities that interest them, allowing them to make friends and live healthier, happier lives. Research shows that 37% of those who own a tablet are over 60, meaning this is the perfect way to reach them.
