Tonbridge. Today, tomorrow, together.
THE FOUNDATION AWARD PROGRAMME PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES TO THOSE WHOSE POTENTIAL IS FAR GREATER THAN THEIR FINANCIAL MEANS.
Excellence for All | Widening Access
A SCHOOL BUILT ON A HISTORY OF PHILANTHROPY. Tonbridge School was founded by Sir Andrew Judde in 1553, with the specific purpose of educating fifty poor scholars. Over time this philanthropic ethos has evolved into a programme that provides over ÂŁ2.0m each year in fee remission for scholarships and bursaries. Throughout our history we have endeavoured to reach out to provide life changing opportunities to talented boys whose families could not afford the fees.
TRUE TO OUR FOUNDATION AND CHARITABLE STATUS WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES‌ Social Mobility is one of the key challenges our society faces in the 21st century. The income gap between the richest and poorest in society continues to widen, while education opportunities remain overwhelmingly dominated by children from the most privileged homes. The advantaged are six times more likely to go to university. Tonbridge recognises the role we have to play to tackle this issue.
Excellence for All | Widening Access
Knowledge is freely available to everyone, so the chance to develop that knowledge, to stretch your mind, to question and explore, should also be accessible to more talented boys. We are therefore keen that our fee structure is not a barrier to coming to the school.
A Tonbridge education is a transformative experience, and increasing the number of Foundation Awards for highly gifted boys who would not otherwise be able to come to Tonbridge remains a key objective.
The Foundation Award programme provides life-changing opportunities, helps to raise standards across the School through an infusion of bright young talent, and ensures all of our boys benefit from studying and living in a diverse and dynamic community. Over 600 people – OTs, parents, staff and friends have given to support the education of past and present Foundation Award recipients. Now, fifteen years on, we want to share with you some of their stories which reinforce the point that the impact is life changing. Thank you to all those who have enabled this gateway to Tonbridge. Robert Elliott, Chair of Governors
REAL LIFE SUCCESS STORIES... Giving towards the education of others requires altruism and a long term view. Reading these stories reinforces the point that the impact is life-changing. The benefits also work both ways: the school gains as well.

“ Tonbridge gave me a strong platform to explore and develop my skills. The opportunities I had were truly unique; setting up a pig farming scheme was a particular highlight. Andrew Goodman (JH 2006-2011) Foundation Award recipient
“ When I compare my affection for the school, the mutual respect with my former teachers, and the international OT network, I realise just how unparalleled the opportunities I have been afforded are.” Laurence Turlej (WW 2009-2014) Foundation Award recipient
“ The combination of outstanding facilities and teachers, whilst constantly being surrounded by great people, has built a foundation that has put me in excellent stead as I begin my career. I will always be grateful for the opportunities that I experienced in my five years at the school.” Oscar Cowling (SC 2008-2013) Foundation Award recipient
“ Tonbridge excels in its ability to recognise a pupil’s nascent talents and curiosities, and to cultivate these into areas of expertise and passion. A strong academic foundation and continual encouragement to tackle complex problems has allowed me to pursue a DPhil at Oxford, where I investigate the origin of the planets in our Solar System.” Sean Hopkins (HS 2004-2009) Foundation Award recipient
“ A TONBRIDGE EDUCATION WAS PERHAPS THE GREATEST GIFT I HAVE YET RECEIVED.”

ADAM WALTON FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENT (WW 2008-2013)
The school is outstanding in so many ways, but for me its greatest strength is preparing one for life beyond its borders. It arms one with a confidence and drive to succeed. As I sat down to take my scholarship exams back in 2006 (in what was then the Divinity block, and what is now the foyer of the splendid new library) I had no idea how profoundly rewarding the step I was taking would ultimately be. As the recipient of a generous bursary, I received an education for which I am immensely grateful, and the benefits of which I feel to this day.
At Tonbridge, academia does not stop at learning the syllabus and finishing with three decent A-levels. Rather, it is a pursuit engaged with rigour and with spirit: not only do the teaching staff excel in their respective fields, their lessons are imbued with a passion for their subject that is not bound by AQA nor Edexcel. They taught me to think, to learn, and to question.
Adam is now a consultant in digital strategy and events management, with a particular focus on the charity sector.

LIAM NOAD FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENT (PS 2007-2011)
The Tonbridge community is one that you feel comes with a life long membership. As a recipient of the Foundation Award, you carry a great debt to the Tonbridge Foundation and endeavour to assist with its sustainability. The opportunity of a Tonbridge education has been opened up to not just the select few, but those that are capable, through the crucial existence of the Tonbridge Foundation. I joined Parkside and instantly felt welcomed by my housemates, realising your background and circumstance are
left at the door and your abilities in corridor cricket and academic merit are what really count. I relished all the opportunities on offer looking to try my hand at things I hadn’t had experience of before, joining the school sailing club, the CCF and enjoying the drama facilities on offer.
Since leaving Tonbridge Liam graduated from Imperial College with an MEng in Civil Engineering and worked for two property developers. In June 2017 he formed his own Property Consultancy.

DANIEL POWER FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENT (WH 2012-2017)
I would like to thank all those who gifted me the opportunity to go to Tonbridge and I will always look back at my time here fondly. I just want to say how grateful I am for the opportunity you have given me at Tonbridge. I have had a memorable five years, made friends and taken part in many activities at the school. I think one of my favourite activities at Tonbridge was TCA. For the last two years I have been doing art with the patients at the Hospice in the Weald and pretty much ran it in my final year. It was a great way for me to combine my interest in art, which I did at Tonbridge until sixth form, with my hope to go to medical school.
I am currently on a gap year, volunteering with a grassroots movement, working in a camp with refugees from the Syrian war and other conflicts in the region on the island of Samos in Greece. We act as first responders for the refugees coming off the boats, often in a desperate state. We also organise educational and other activities for the refugees designed to instill a sense of normality, combat boredom, and empower people while they wait for their asylum to be processed. Amongst other things, I run art and keep fit classes. In the keep fit classes I deploy the fitness routines that I learnt in Tonbridge. I have set up a running club which is proving popular with the refugees. I am keeping my eye out for the next Mo Farah! I am learning Arabic and Farsi in order to communicate with the refugees who cannot speak English. After my gap year I aim to go to medical school.
ALFRED ADEOYE FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENT (HS 2005-2010)
I’m involved with the EY Foundation, where I’ve been able to champion a programme that sends first year graduates to schools around London to run sessions to de-mystify university and working life. One of the key things that I learnt from my time at Tonbridge was the importance of social responsibility, in part due to being a recipient of the Foundation Award but also through the Wednesday afternoon Community Service Programme. After leaving Tonbridge, I went on to read Economics at Girton College, Cambridge where I was involved in
working with the Sutton Trust by giving talks at schools in Tower Hamlets and helping to run a Summer School in Cambridge. Our aims were to de-mystify the Cambridge experience and help school children, typically from lower socio-economic backgrounds, to see applying to Cambridge as a viable and attainable option for them. This is a cause that I’ve continued to be involved over the last few years working in London. Alfred is a risk management consultant at EY and involved at the forefront in shaping how the banking sector will operate over the coming years.

JUDE LENIER FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENT (WW 2009-2014)
I was only able to attend Tonbridge because of my Foundation Award. I think my time there meant more to me as I wouldn’t have had that opportunity under normal circumstances. I’m sure that I tried to make my time there mean more as a result. There were many advantages of being at Tonbridge. The smaller student population and class sizes made it easier to find help from a teacher or house master if I needed it. And the excellent facilities (especially the library) meant I could take advantage of the schools’ resources to work on my own projects. Tonbridge’s real strength is the teaching. In any school I would have been able to make friends, pass exams and ‘get through’ my school years. However, there are very few in which I would have had as much access to teachers, experts in their fields who encouraged us all to study beyond what they taught in class. I don’t
know if I would have been able to go on to Oxford and study my dream course in PPE without the help and support of my teachers. I highly doubt it. Even if I had not been thankful for anything else, I’d be grateful to Tonbridge for giving me the ambition and education to shoot for that goal.
Jude is currently working in the reinsurance sector, training to be an underwriter, but his eventual ambition is to go into politics to promote a more evidence-based approach to governance.

JOSH CRONIN FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENT (HS 2010-2015)
I think that this level of varied education should be available to everyone, not just those that can afford it. It is vital that this incredible support is continued and developed at Tonbridge. I am continually grateful for the blessings and opportunities that the award of a Foundation scholarship has granted me during my five years at Tonbridge School. I realise that many of the opportunities and experiences I have had would not have been possible were I not a Foundation scholar. For that I am indebted to the benefactors of the Foundation and the school.
we would do. I also am a lot more comfortable and less prone to nerves when I make presentations or lead groups as often happens as part of my academic work at university. I would put this down to the time spent training younger cadets and leading drill practice. I would strongly encourage any current Tonbridgian to complete the four years as a cadet.
If I had to pick out one of the opportunities that shaped me in some way, it would be my four years as a cadet in the CCF. I realise now that I am a lot more confident in the face of unexpected change, thereby having to improvise and plan quickly. I think this came out of the many command tasks
Josh is currently in his third year of the MEng Aerospace Engineering course at the University of Bristol, a year and a half to go. Although subject to change, he is thinking of settling in Bristol post-graduation and is open to many career paths.
“ THE FOUNDATION AWARD HAS GIVEN ME THE TOOLS TO CONTINUALLY ACHIEVE AND DEVELOP. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO SUPPORTED ME WITH DONATIONS.”

JOE PAYNE FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENT (FH 2009-2014)
Tonbridge gave me a strong work ethic; the confidence to lead and work as a team and the greatest friends, many of which I still see on a regular basis. Personally, the greatest thing Tonbridge and therefore the Foundation Award gave me was a sense of home. As my parents were going through a divorce at the time the sense of family in Ferox Hall (and Knox House) and the stability and support offered from pastoral staff I believe allowed me to develop and achieve in ways I wouldn’t have been able to do. After Tonbridge, I took a year out from studying to work with young children in the Schools at Somerhill, leading
sports sessions and helping as a teaching assistant. Since then I have been completing a four-year BSc degree in Chemistry with forensic investigation at the University of Surrey. During this time I have also been involved in multiple societies, such as touch rugby and snow sports, as well as becoming the Vice President of ChemSoc in year two. I have also been involved with further charity projects working with NCS in the development of young people, much like the award helped me.
Joe is currently on placement working in the MHRA laboratories, analysing medicines before they are released to market.
OUR VISION CAN BE REALISED WITH THE SUPPORT OF OTs, PARENTS AND FRIENDS.
Excellence for All | Widening Access
WIDENING ACCESS. OUR VISION. Tonbridge School aims to be needs blind to talented boys, providing means tested support to all boys who receive a scholarship. We currently provide financial support as Foundation Awards to 50 boys in the school at any time. Since inception, the various house award schemes have been a great success and we continue to encourage support for house based fundraising. Our ambition is to double the number of Foundation Awards to 100 boys as part of our commitment to widening access and to maintain the diversity of the school population, for the benefit of all boys at the school.
WIDENING ACCESS. THE IMPACT. A great education can transform a boy’s life, and we hope that in return, it will enable him to transform the lives of others. The provision of Foundation Awards at Tonbridge enriches our school, raises academic standards and a greater mix of cultures and backgrounds is healthy preparation for all Tonbridgians for life beyond school.
