A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Annual Report – my first as the Chair of Governors. I would like to give thanks to my predecessor, Jonathan Cohen, who did such a fine job in guiding the governing body with great warmth and wisdom. I also want to record the Governor’s appreciation to Tim Haynes. Tim has been a wonderful Headmaster and has overseen a period of exceptional success. During his 13-year tenure Tonbridge has built upon its reputation as one of the finest boys’ boarding schools in the UK. Tim has been one of the visionaries behind our wonderful development programme, with several outstanding projects, including our sports centre and library, being delivered during his time here. His most enduring legacy though, will be the boys Tonbridge has produced under his leadership – to use his own words, ‘Tonbridgians will, of course, all be different, but I hope what they have in common is a quiet self-confidence, not arrogance, which means they are comfortable in their own skins and in whatever setting they find themselves.’ I know boys past and present, as well as staff, parents and the governing body, will wish him a very happy retirement. James Priory will join us as Headmaster in 2018 and will look to build on Tim’s fine work. He will find a school in excellent health. Tonbridge is full, with approximately 780 boys on roll, and examination results were again extremely strong. The pages of this report will give a more complete picture of where Tonbridge stands and its plans for the future. Best wishes, Robert Elliott Chair of Governors

Tonbridge School Annual Report 2017

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER Change is a theme of all great institutions and Tonbridge is no different in this respect.

The desire of our founder, Sir Andrew Judd, to provide a school for the ‘education and instruction of boys…forever’, remains as true today as it did in 1553, but to achieve this aim in modern society requires us to adapt. With the construction of the new science centre, we are nearing the completion of the greatest period of change – at least to the built environment – the School has seen since the 1800s. The ground has now been broken on this project and, by 2019, Tonbridge will be home to, what I am certain will be, the best school science facility in the country. There is an echo to the past here, as the original science building was viewed as one of the nation’s finest upon its completion in 1887. The new science centre will stand proudly alongside our other development projects of recent years; the award-winning Smythe Library extension and refurbishment, the Chadwick building for divinity, improved English classrooms and new tennis courts. These positive changes are necessary to uphold Tonbridge’s centuries old tradition of providing the best possible education for its boys.

Tonbridge though is about far more than its buildings. As one parent wrote in response to a recent survey, ‘The quality of the School is down to the staff and the values taught.’ I couldn’t agree more! The campus may have been transformed, but our aims of delivering excellent teaching and learning, high quality pastoral care and providing an array of personal development opportunities for boys will always remain. As many of you will be aware, this is my final year at the School. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Old Tonbridgians, current and former staff, parents past and present, the Governors and, of course, the boys, for their support during my time here. It has been an honour to serve as Tonbridge’s Headmaster and I know James Priory, who will join us from the Portsmouth Grammar School in September, will do an outstanding job. James believes, as I do, that Tonbridge is one of the UK’s great schools and he is looking forward to building on its fine traditions. Best wishes,

Tim Haynes Headmaster

Tonbridge School Annual Report 2017

Science Centre It is just over two and a half years since we launched ambitious plans for a state-of-the-art science centre at Tonbridge. We are delighted to announce that thanks to the support and generosity of OTs, parents and Friends of the School, we have started to build this magnificent new facility. The original 1887 science building has been gutted and the site prepared for the construction of the east facing glass extension. This part of the building will reflect our respect for tradition and our openness to innovation. In the interim, science has been relocated to a modern, temporary facility overlooking the Head, which will serve as its headquarters until the project’s expected completion date in early 2019. The feedback from the boys and academic staff confirms that this facility is working very well and is already helping to put into practice the principles of inter-disciplinary collaboration and innovation, championed in the new building.

The new Science Centre puts science at the very heart of the school with access to Mathematics, Social sciences and Design technology. Central to the design is a generous atrium space for lectures and experiments, where staff and pupils can meet, interact, and share ideas. Elsewhere the building will also have areas for group work and private study, project rooms and a living scientific roof garden. The main teaching areas for Chemistry, Physics and Biology will be located over three floors, with each subject benefiting from additional spacious and well-equipped teaching laboratories.

‘Tonbridge understands that future technological, economic and cultural progress will be driven by the next generation of scientists. The new Science Centre will help pioneer new teaching methods, and provide a stimulating environment in which our students can learn, develop and achieve.’ Bill Burnett, Head of Science at Tonbridge School

Science Centre - THEN AND NOW Although we will be extending and improving the science centre with new classrooms, the latest technology and beautiful architecture, the work we are undertaking is also a regeneration project. Many of the original features that make the building unique will be maintained and the science centre will be a complementary mixture of the old and the new. Some features that were a part of the building when it was completed in 1887, had been covered up in the intervening years and the current work has revealed them.

The pictures show what some of the science centre rooms looked like during the 1800s. Readers might like to compare them with the modern-day images taken by our contractors as construction takes place. Also of interest is the original footprint for the building (outlined in blue), which can be compared with the current drawings.

This will allow the science centre to celebrate both the old and the new; the ahead of its time 1887 science block and its modern, cutting-edge replacement. We intend to name the laboratories after eminent Tonbridge scientists.

We do hope you share our excitement and enthusiasm for this superb new facility and would like to get involved in supporting it, because it will transform the teaching of Science at Tonbridge for generations to come.

Tonbridge in the Community The development of a boys’ sense of social responsibility is one of the key pillars of a Tonbridge education.

Through the School’s community arm, Tonbridge Community Action (TCA), we aim to connect boys and staff with our local community by participating in activities that are clearly for the benefit of the wider public. Our community work is a major way by which we help boys to become leaders who wish to fulfil their potential. This is achieved by fostering empathy for the needs and views of others, whilst eschewing all forms of prejudice by involving themselves in the lives of people from different backgrounds and life experiences. As a result, boys further develop their skills and confidence to do things that make a difference. This helps to raise students’ awareness of social and cultural differences as well as environmental challenges locally, nationally and internationally, by encouraging the boys to take individual and collective action that will make a creative, caring impact on individuals and communities. Over the past year, boys and staff have given an extraordinary amount of time and resources to help these good causes, charities and community groups.

Pink Day in October, sees boys make a contribution of at least £1 to Breast Cancer Awareness charities which entitles them to wear items of pink clothing on the designated school day. Over the years this day has become a joyous fancy dress celebration of their commitment to the cause with many pupils now opting for a complete pink costume. Recent Pink Day celebrations saw the Cawthorne Lecture theatre adorned with an enormous pink bow, so the whole of Tonbridge Town could see our support for the campaign. Each term we have Field Days, with boys given a day to take enjoy a range of co-curricular opportunities. The School uses this day to do extra work with community organisations and we invite them on to the campus to take part in activities and games.

This year we welcomed young asylum seekers, who have escaped civil war and poverty in their home countries, to join Tonbridge boys in a football tournament. Our friends from Scotts Project Trust, a local charity supporting adults with learning disabilities, came for tea and a tour of our wonderful Old Big School Gallery exhibition and we offered swimming lessons to children from the Cage Green Phoenix Centre for autism. Whole School Community Day each summer sees every boy and member of staff involved in either community or charity based activities. Hundreds of local children visit the Tonbridge site to take part in a range of academic, artistic and sporting activities. In 2017, we rounded off the day with a fundraising ‘mass mile’ with primary school children and their Tonbridge helpers running, jogging and walking the school grounds. All of these events are in addition to the TCA’s regular weekly work, which sees boys and staff support a range of organisations on a Wednesday afternoons, including local primary schools, care homes and conservation projects. The impact of Tonbridge’s work in the community cannot, and should not, be measured in numbers alone, but a recent audit estimated that boys and staff collectively give approximately 20,000 hours of time to volunteering per year.

50 BOYS RECEIVE MEANS TESTED SUPPORT OF UP TO 100% OF FEES

Tonbridge School Annual Report 2017

Foundation Awards ‘Opportunity’ is the word that springs to mind for Alex Moen when you ask him what the best part about attending Tonbridge is.

‘The academic side is extremely strong of course, but it’s all the extra-curricular opportunities that you can’t find anywhere else; the drama, the sport, art and music…’ Alex is a Foundation Scholar at the school. Each year Tonbridge forgoes approximately £2million to provide financial support for boys who would not otherwise be able to attend the school. The Foundation Award Programme provides a means tested bursary of up to 100%. The aim is that talented boys who can benefit from a Tonbridge education are not prevented from accessing the School due to any financial constraints. Tonbridge is committed to expanding these opportunities through the philanthropic support from a large number of OTs, parents and friends. Alex was at Colliers Green Primary School prior to two years at prep school, partly funded by the Foundation Award.

He also won separate academic and sports scholarships due to his ability in these areas. Now in the Upper Sixth and the School’s First XI cricket captain and Deputy Head Boy, Alex feels he has been able to take full advantage of the academic and extra-curricular opportunities available at Tonbridge. “You are given an opportunity to try whatever you want,” he said. “As well as sport, I love drama and I go and support all the productions. I have no talent whatsoever for music, but I take part in the house music competition and really enjoy it. It doesn’t matter how good you are at something, you are given an opportunity to do your best and everyone is supportive and wants to help you.”

Alex believes a Tonbridge education will prove its worth to him in future and thinks that boys who attend the school develop a quiet confidence to achieve, but not an arrogance, in part because they are invited to take on new challenges. He said: “You gain a belief in yourself. I am happy going out of my comfort zone which I think will stand me good stead in future.” Crucial to this supportive environment is good pastoral care. The house system, which fosters an atmosphere in which all members of the community look out for each other, is at the heart of all that we do. Alex said: “I can only speak for my house, but there is a great atmosphere and we mix with people from all the different age groups and not split into different sections. It is great to be a part of it. The boarding environment really teaches you a lot and it’s good to see how we have all progressed over five years to become really good friends and work well together.” Alex is keenly aware that his Foundation Award place was made possible thanks to those who have given donations - both large and small - to the Foundation Award programme over the years. He certainly agrees with the School about the value of its scholarship and bursary scheme and fully supports such programmes being continued. “Definitely. 100 per cent. When you start here it’s in the back of your mind that you might stand out but that is just not the case. You have no idea who has a scholarship and who doesn’t – I don’t mind people knowing that I do, but it doesn’t ever come up. “

A Message From The Bursar Tonbridge in Numbers

Whilst some things have not changed markedly since last year, a lot has changed since I last put pen to paper to provide a financial update for the School’s Annual Report. Let me start with the things that are not very different. As shown by the figures opposite, the School remains full, staff are still committed to providing the best possible education and support for the boys at the School, and academic results remain strong. From a financial point of view, and as discussed in last year’s report, the School’s fee income is supplemented significantly by ‘donations and trading income’ with £1.7m received from the Judd Foundation, £1.9m raised by fundraising, and £2.8m from commercial activities, trading and facilities hire. Nevertheless, a visitor or a new boy at the School this year will see three very different things. First of all, a well-established, heavily used, and beautifully surrounded Library: this was new for boys and staff at the start of the 2016 academic year, and is now firmly established as an excellent facility for learning and researching, as well as for socialising and relaxing. After £6.1m of investment, this award-winning facility is now a central part of the boys’ lives at Tonbridge, as well as the gateway to universities and careers beyond. Secondly, there is an admittedly rather ugly building on the Upper Hundred, constructed during 2016/17, forcing prize-giving on Skinners’ Day 2017 onto the Quad (which worked remarkably well). This is the “Temporary Science Village”: the location for all Science teaching and learning for the coming year, fitted out to a very high standard, and, as one boy put it to me, “much better than the old dark building, with lots of stairs”. Visitors to this building on Skinners’ Day remarked that it was a better facility than most permanent Science buildings.

Thirdly, the centre of the school, behind the Chapel is currently an interesting but sometimes noisy building site, requiring not only some diversions around the School site, but also a rather entertaining temporary bridge (with a good view of construction activity). This is, of course, the construction site for the New Science Centre: the complete refurbishment, and partial demolition of the current Science building, with the addition of a new and connected wing. The whole project (including the Temporary Science Village) will cost £19.8m, with the majority of the funding coming from or via the Judd Foundation, and generous donations. The Library and New Science Centre represent the most significant developments in the School’s facilities since the late 19th Century, only made possible by support from the Judd Foundation and generous donors. The facilities of the school are of course important, but it is the staff and boys here who make the School what it is. The figures opposite show, for example, the continuing low pupil / teacher ratio which, while no measure of ‘quality’, enables the great interaction between boys and staff commented on by ISI inspectors. The support of the Judd Foundation and donors will be called on once again as the School continues to develop. Those with a close attention to detail may observe the slight increase last year in the ‘% of Boys Receiving Means-Tested Support’ measure in the figures opposite. This number will increase again this year, and, rather than being an accident, is a result of increasing efforts by the School to ensure not only that we are known to, and can appeal to boys from diverse backgrounds, but also that we can attract and retain boys who can benefit most from what Tonbridge has to offer, regardless of their parents’ ability to pay. This critical initiative, which we are confident will yield positive results for the School, will come at a cost, and meeting this cost will need the support of donors now and in the future.

Tonbridge School Annual Report 2017

2016/17 Highlights The 2016/17 academic year has been one of excellence and achievement for Tonbridge. Here are just some of the highlights of the past twelve months;

Smythe Library

The extended and modernised Smythe Library was the winner of an architecture award. The building was named ‘Education Building of the Year’ at the Retrofit Awards in London. The awards are backed by The Architects’ Journal, to recognise and celebrate design, engineering and construction excellence that prolongs and improves the life of the built environment.

Tonbridge School was pleased with another strong set of examination results. At A level over two-thirds of all grades were A* or A, or their Pre-U equivalent. The ‘average’ set of results for a Tonbridge student was A*AA.

Award for Headmaster Tim Haynes was named the Tatler ‘Best Head of Public School’ at the publication’s prestigious annual Schools’ Awards.

The ‘average’ holding for a Tonbridge student at GCSE was 7 A*s and 3 As. The percentage of A*s was over 61% and all candidates managed at least two A grades.

NEW SCIENCE CENTRE

Mr Haynes accepted his prize in a ceremony held at the Landmark London Hotel. Furthermore, Tatler recently released their annual School Guide, listing the best independent schools in the UK, and Tonbridge received a glowing write-up. Ground was broken on the new Science Centre. In September, a temporary science centre opened on the Upper Hundred – the temporary centre would be the envy of many schools with two floors of extremely well-equipped labs and classrooms. The new centre will open in 2019.

Tonbridge School Annual Report 2017

Community Day

Over 600 primary school pupils, plus members of various local organisations and senior citizens, took part in Tonbridge’s annual Community Day.

16

NEW OUTDOOr COurT

The aim of the event is to reach out to members of the local community and inspire people to try something new. Activities were either run or supported by Tonbridge boys and staff.

135 Novi (first year) boys slept rough in aid of a charity which supports homeless and vulnerable young people in Kent. The event, which saw students and staff spend the night in a cardboard ‘city’ constructed in the school’s Quad, raised over £9,000 for Porchlight. Boys sleep rough for the homeless

The boys listened to talks from Porchlight staff and service users as they tried to better understand the issues around how someone ends up sleeping rough.

Boys and staff took part in a 12-hour long performance of Terry Riley’s seminal piece of minimalism ‘In C’, as a sound installation in our Old Big School Gallery.

The inaugural house ‘3v3’ basketball competition marked the opening of the new outdoor court at the Tonbridge School Centre. The court was official opened by Second Master Dr Huw Williams, with parents and staff invited to the event.

Terry Riley’s ‘In C’

‘In C’ comprises fifty-three melodic patterns played in sequence. The performers, playing a wide variety of instruments or even singing, choose how many times they play each pattern as well as its dynamic and relative speed. The mesmeric polyrhythmic nature of the music creates a spontaneous, ever-changing series of different musical shapes. The performance featured a large number of boys and staff playing for short periods at a time. Visitors to the gallery were also invited to come along, pick up an instrument and join in.

Tonbridge were crowned winners of the 2016 NatWest Rugby Champions Trophy after beating holders Bedford School in a thrilling final at Allianz Park.

Tonbridge Wins Rugby CHampions trophy

Several hundred fans, including Old Tonbridgians, parents and boys from the school, travelled to Saracens’ home ground to watch the final, with many hundreds more watching the live broadcast on the internet. They saw an excellent game, with Tonbridge’s powerful brand of rugby and depth off the bench eventually overcoming Bedford’s tenacity in a tight contest.

Tonbridge School Annual Report 2017

The Tonbridge Society At Tonbridge, we are fortunate to have an increasingly supportive group of OTs, parents and friends, who do an enormous amount for the School. Our aim is to build on this support and provide a wide-ranging programme that helps us come together to reinforce and strengthen the unique relationship that we all have with Tonbridge. It is now just over a year since the Tonbridge Society office team was centralised to provide administrative, communication and event support for the Old Tonbridgian Society, Parents’ Arts Society, the Careers and Mentoring Scheme and School Development. The incredibly positive response we have had from members of this community has, we believe, justified our new approach. More parents and Old Tonbridgians have participated in our programme of events and activities here in Tonbridge, London and around the world; and more people than ever before have made gifts to the School which is greatly appreciated.

Over the course of the year, the Old Tonbridgian Society worked hard to put together the wide-ranging events programme our community of OTs want to attend. We held a series of age, location, and interest-based reunions both at Tonbridge, and across the globe, each of which grow in popularity with every year. By increasing the number of events we hold overseas, we hope to make it easier for OTs abroad to find contacts in their country, as well as maintain their relationship with the wider Tonbridge community. Building on the success of David Tennant’s chairmanship, the Parents’ Arts Society continues to flourish and membership now includes over 1000 families. Last year, under the chairmanship of Chris Scott, over a hundred events – lectures, classes, tours, international trips and social occasions took place, enabling parents to meet each other and members of staff, and make use of the School’s superb facilities.

‘I would like to thank all those who gifted me the opportunity to go to Tonbridge. I have had a memorable five years, made friends and taken part in many activities at the school and been fortunate enough to have gone on several school trips. This coming year I will be taking a gap year to do charity work and after that I will hopefully go to medical school’. Daniel Power WH Foundation Award Scholar 2012 - 2017

Career and mentoring events are run annually by Anna Rogers, our Head of Higher Educations and Careers with the involvement of our talented network of OTs, past and present parents. Our team is committed to providing ever more opportunities for Tonbridgians to connect with their community. Thank you to all who have attended events, renewed your connection with or given to the School in the last year. We are hugely grateful for your warm and generous support.

The 1553 Society The 1553 Society honors those loyal donors who give to Tonbridge School on a regular basis.

With over 400 OTs, parents and friends supporting Tonbridge with a regular gift, the 1553 Society is thriving. Collective giving really is making a difference with 13% of total gifts received in 2016/17 coming from its membership.

Regular giving allows our supporters to give generously with the minimum impact on their finances, whilst helping the school with its long-range planning and decision making. Importantly, it also makes a tangible difference to the opportunities we can create for current and future boys. For example, if 15% of all OTs and parents give the historically significant amount of £15.53 a month for 5 years we could raise £1.2million towards Foundation Awards – a truly generous and transformative gift. In recognition of this support, all members of the 1553 Society are listed in this annual report and are invited each year to a special thank you reception with the Headmaster. If you wish to join the 1553 Society, please contact Yvette Young, who would be delighted to hear from you.

The Judde Society Sir Andrew Judde, Sir Thomas Smythe, Mr Henry Fisher, Sir Thomas White, Mr Worral and Mr H S Vere Hodge are just some of those whose legacies have helped make the school what it is today and whose names are included in the Bidding Prayer, which is recited at the Skinners’ Day Service.

Philanthropy has driven Tonbridge School’s progress and accomplishments, and today every boy continues to benefit from the forethought and generosity of the generations who came before them. Not only will your legacy donation be hugely important to Tonbridge, but it is also advantageous from a tax perspective. The Tonbridge School Foundation is a registered charity (charity number 1099162) and accordingly, all legacies made to the Foundation are exempt from UK Inheritance and Capital Gains Taxes.

By way of example, if a UK testator with an estate of £500,000, leaves a donation of £17,500, it diminishes the remaining estate by only £4200.

Making a will is an important step and it is recommended that you seek independent professional legal advice. Our new Judde Society Manager, Tara Biddle, would be happy to provide you with further information on the various ways you can include Tonbridge in your will, the latest information about including Tonbridge in your will.

Tonbridge School Annual Report 2017

Donations received We would like to thank all our donors and legators for their outstanding generosity.

Tonbridge School was built on the vision and generosity of its supporters and is enormously grateful for every gift it receives no matter what the size. We value each and every donation and are delighted to see so many donors giving on a regular basis. As you are aware, our Foundation Award programme is an important aspect of our Excellence for All campaign and we would like to acknowledge all those who have supported this scheme (*).

As you will see from the donor lists over the following pages we have developed several recognition groups, which enable us to bring our donors closer to the work of the school and foster a thriving community. As a member of one of these groups you will be invited to special events throughout the year. We have been careful to omit the names of all those who, at some point, have indicated their wish to remain anonymous.

FROM THE HEADMASTER T. H. P. HAYNES, BA Telephone: 01732 304253 E-mail: development@tonbridge-school.org

November 2017 Dear Old Tonbridgians, parents and Friends It is my pleasure to enclose the 2017 Annual Report which I hope you will enjoy reading. Once again, on behalf of the boys, staff and wider community, I would like to thank you for your kind and generous support, and recognise the wide-ranging impact this has had. The aim of the annual report is to provide details about our finances, showcase aspects of the School and capture some of the stories and projects that have become a reality over the past year, thanks to donations from members of the Tonbridge community. Philanthropy at Tonbridge is not just about ‘large’ financial gifts; rather it is about many people contributing in any way they can, to ensure that together, we can provide an education of depth and breadth, and welcome talented boys from all backgrounds. I hope that by reading about the important projects that have been funded, you will be inspired to continue supporting us or to get involved in the future. With very many thanks and best wishes
