Everything happened from a show called Image Harvest. Suddenly I was told to prepare a show in three weeks and I was in panic. I still remembered that I spent a lot of time to prepare 10 ideas although I just need one for the show. I did not want to waste those ideas so I used the rest of the ideas to be a part of the later assignments.
I used to draw a lot and I really love all kinds of traditional media to make things but I did not really understand what is an illustrator. I finished my first assignment in confusion and not surprisingly i did not feel statisfied with it. But I was so excited because I had a chance to see other classmates’ work and to be honest, I felt so good to be a part of this program, everyone is different and talented. I knew I need to work hard and I would have a great time with them. I belong here.

I made a paper model for assignment called Paper Cut & Engineering. I was satisfied with the technique and appearance, while I felt like I had almost nothing to share with my classmates, there was almost nothing behind the model. I still felt confused and a little bit empty but I did not know what was the problem and I had no time to stop and think.

CERAMIC BLUE POMEGRANATE PRINCE MATERIAL: CERAMIC, UNDER GLAZE, GLAZE, GOLD LUSTER NOVEMBER 12, 2018
It is a pot with changeable lid. The inspiration of lid comes from several growth stages of a pomegranate, the little leaves of pomegranate are applied gold luster, which makes them look like crowns. The most interesting point of this pot is that we can change the head while we use it.

Since the weather was getting colder and colder, I decided to use snowflakes to be the element and I made a winter sketchbook for this assignment.

LASER CUTTING AIRSHIP AUTOMATON MATERIAL WOOD BOARD DECEMBER 4, 2018
Laser cut is a kind of technique that I was very familiar with. For this assignment I decided to make a toy, and I always wanted to make something related to airship and steam punk, so basically I just combined these two ideas together. I did learned how to make automaton, and the final project was good, but indeed, I still had almost nothing to share with others during the critic. The exquisite piece I made was a little bit empty inside. I realized I just use those assignments to prove that I can make beautiful complex things, I was showing off my techniques and I was truly a craftsman rather than an illustrator.

ART MARKET AMUSEMENT PARK PRINTS MATERIAL: SCREEN PRINTING, HOLOGRAPHIC PAPER, PAPER, ACRYLIC PAINT DECEMBER 6, 2018
Art market was almost at the end of the first semester, My project was 4 screen prints in a set; they were screen printed on holographic paper and had anaglyph 3D effects. Each she of prints would be placed in a clear bag with a pair of paper 3D glasses. The theme of my prints is play because the date of Art Market is nearly the end of the year; Christmas and New Year are coming soon. I want everyone feels happy and relax, people always feel happy when they are child, playing in amusement parks. Holographic paper can create a sense of holiday and anaglyph 3D effects can give people a sense of dizzy, happy and movement just like people play in amusement parks.

My products did not sell good althought I think I had a strong story behind them. But selling things was infected by so many factors such as customers and prices. Illustrations are important while marketing and packaging can not be ignored as well. I found that to be an illustrator, not only I need to master the illustration skills, but also the business knowledge.

RISOGRAPH RISO COMIC DESIGN MATERIAL: RISOGRAPH FRENCH PAPER DECEMBER 12, 2018
This project is about weird and funny stories happened between famous artists and their artworks. This set includes 8 comics, which are Sunflowers, Morning, The scream, Venus de Milo, David, Frida, Itchy and Smile. The idea is from one of the 10 ideas that I came up for image harvest about artworks. These famous artworks are always hanging on the wall of museum and always have a distance with their audience, i want to tell some interesting stories and view them from another angle to narrow the gap between audience and works. During this project, I felt something changed in my mind, instead of thinking about the techniques, I started think about stories. What would happened if all those artworks alive.Then I stared to choose some famous artworks because I want my comic to be recognizable without explanation. And I focused on the features of the artworks such as the eyebrow of Frida, the hand of Vinus de Milo and the heart shape in David’s eyes. After this project, I felt myself gradually became more illustrator rather than crafts man. The way I thought changed, I used to think about techniques and media first, so the things I made are always a piece of beautiful work. while from this project, my work was truly turned into an illustration work.

This was a collaboration project about stop motion animation. I had never done animation before, so this project was a challenge for me. Tina and I started to brainstorm and finally came to agreement to do stop motion animation related to valentine’s day because the final presentation was on valentine’s day. We thought about story first and decided to make a valentine’s table to tell the whole story. We added a little humor at the end to make the story more interesting. Paper cut was our choice and turned out very good.

The inspiration comes from New York skyline. The combination of those architecture intrigued me and since English words also have a sense of architecture, thus, I use 3D modeling designed this skyline alphabet.

PATTERN STONE CRAB MATERIAL: DIGITAL DRAWING MARCH 3, 2019

I had stone crabs in Florida. The way they sell crabs really intrigued me since they only sell claws instead of the whole body. The truth is the Florida crabs use their strong claws to break oyster shells, by doing so, their claws become bigger and strongger .In addition, they lose their limbs easily when they escape from predators, and the wound heals quickly, which makes the claw fleshier than before. I really enjoy this project because I think pattern is very useful and easily to be printed on all different kinds of products. I always want to be commercial and I would definitely use pattern techniques in my later career.

WBS PROJECT POEM ILLUSTRATION MATERIAL: DIGITAL DRAWING MARCH 30, 2019
I found my own digital illustration style in this project, this client based project helped me go through the process of a real job. And as an illustrator, I thought more about the illustration part, while when it came to a collaboration job, I should sometimes negotiate with my clients and revise my work to meettheir needs. The final work was showed on a huge billboard in Baltimore and printed on newspaper. When I looked at them, I felt I am on my way to be a professional illustrator.

SELF DIRECTED FLORIDA TRAVEL BOOK MATERIAL: DIGITAL DRAWING, COLORED PENCIL APRIL 28, 2019
I went to Florida with my friends in January 2019. It was so much fun. So many interesting things happened and I wanted to make a book to record all those exciting moments in the tour. This book included two parts, one was about the fun things happened between us and the other is sketches in the trip.

I drawed digitally at the first part of the book because Orlando is like colorful childhood, full of happy and fancy things. I mainly focus on fun things happened between my friends and I. I also draw some delicious food at this part.

At the second part of the book, i used colored pencil to draw some loose sketches. Miami and Key West were more quite than Orlando. Compared to modern amusement parks of Orlando, Miami and Key west were the places for real vacation, making me feel comfortable and release in my heart.

This is not the end, I am looking forward to experience the second year with my dear classmates. It is really glad to have all of them. I am really happy to be a member of ILP MFA.
