PIER D BAR AT BROOKLYN NAVY YARD #Post-Industrial Retreat Purposing a new leisure retreating bar at the brooklyn navy yard , this project aims to explore a new strategy in the post-industrial age. Using abondoned bunker oil tank as main structure material, I designed a set of instruction specifically for my contractor - GMD shipyard. The whole building is celebrating the welding technique using on the shipping building and try to reuse the post-industrail waste. As a new recreational area, Brooklyn navy yard is lacking relaxing place for the workers in the park.

The main structure will be assembled from used bunker oil tank(10’x34’) either recycled from the shipyard or purchased from second-hand dealers, welded together and covered. The interior spaces will be covered with bent timbers and planking typically used in keels. To celebrate the ship building and repairing technique, steel welding and cutting contractors as well as carpenters from the shipyard will be kindly invited to take responsibility to construct the main body. All the Oil tanks need to be cleaned overly and cut in an relatively open space as individual components, then transport to site by cranes to be welded on site. Interior construction will take place after the main structure has finished on site. Following your earlier request, we provided lots of windows and balconies overviewing the harbour. I also recommend to landscape the rest of the pier as an outdoor recreation area using the cut-offs from the tanks to produce exterior furniture might be productive here.

IMMERSIVE THEATER ZOO #Who is the Observers? Expanding the research on interaction behavior between human being, we move on to the relationship between human beings and animals. In order to change the relationship between human beings and animals in a traditional zoo which is, human being the audience and animals being the performers, this project blurs boundaries between those two subjects. Instead of caging animals, we would like to give animals and human beings the same experience. By transforming the whole southern island into our zoo, we provide human beings and animals with equal freedom and flexibility. We are creating architecture without roof by immersing architecture in the landscape and also immersing landscape in our architecture. .

We try to change the relationship between people and animals in the traditional zoo, no longer caging them, providing more freedom to animals. we immse landscape in architecture and immerse architecture in landscape. Varying topography creates different environments–cave, river, etc.. These spaces are separated naturally through changing elevation. On the other hand, there will be enclosed spaces which are conditioned to allow for year-round programming, yet animals are allowed to penetrate and explore this otherwise “interior space. Architecture is fading and landscape is growing from north to south in order to create a sequence which allow human beings and animals interact with each other step by step.
TIDAL IMMERSION METROPOLIS #new way to engage sea level rising The site was supposed to be the new location for Amazon HQ, although Amazon decided not to come, how to arrange private space and democratic space remains an architectural issue. Taking the advantage of the waterfront site, we aiming to use water as node to connect communities and incoming technology company. New York is surrounding with water, however, not much space could people be able to directly access east river. So we decide to create mutiple directly water accessing recreation on the site.To actually live with water rather than live beside water. We are trying to explore a new waterfront urban typology and at the same time propose a new office environment.

Using city context as planning reference. Instead of simply extending city grid, we introduce three direction within our site and the interacting of different direction blocks will create interesting negative space. The blocks will be the positive space. We either push or pull these positive blocks to create either pools or buildings.

CHINESE PHOTOGRAPHER GALLERY IN LONDON #Peeking into The Truth In the exhibition, the revolution of China will be one of my focus, the time will be locked in the period of China around 1949 when the People Republic of China established. That history is a huge break through of China ,however, some truth were hidden by the government. But photos could talk themselves, what architecture need to be is the stage. A peek from the crowded London city into the history of China. China has 5000 years history, its culture, civilization, humanity are all birthed from that history. Cultures varies from province to province, even town to town. We speak different dialects, share different conventions. This country can be never summerized by a single book or movie. Me, as a Chinese, I would like to provide a stage to show more about China to the world. Photography is a perfect media for that. Pictures can talk themselves, just like architecture, they store memories in one way and release them in milion ways.

WREN CHURCH EXHIBITION PAVILLION IN LONDON #Evocation of Losing Memories This project aims to produce an exhibition space within the ruined church gardern and present 25 Wren Churchs. It is Productive exhibition design, which is the possibility of directly engaging with the producer of an exhibition. Becoming part of the actual process and product of the exhibition. I played with light and shadow for concept study. The most interesting part of nature light is it unpredictablility. This shadow cast on the wall will change with the time passing and it is how this device interact with it’s surrounding. Since the Wren Church located among city of London, the map of London is used as the pavilion’s pattern and the church bubble(to display the model of each Wren Church)is located just under the location on the shadow map of London. Glazing is used as structure to add the lightness of the structure so the roof will have more sense of floating.

HOUSING RECAP #Story driving housing The initial idea is to design comfortable houses for people who live in the busy city and own a busy life. In that case, the space can be as simple as possible. At the same time, I consider the background of each potential residents. Such as a single man with a dog, a fashion designer moved from a foreign country. Or there could be a just married couple, or simply two friends want to rent a house together. There could be a big familiy with children. I start to imagine what kind of people will be living in the apartment and what stories behind those people. What kinds of space do they need.Only to fully undertand them, could a good architect design the most suitable apartment for them. However, Instead of building up a new building, what about adapt my analysis into an unfinished building ? Beijing is already overcrowded, what can we do to save such busy city through architecture?

Mini Project Category #Concrete Bird Nest #Tectonic Modelling #Landscape Design #X-Information Modelling Exploring more skills and ability in architecture field, those mini project demonstrate different type of professional knowledge and skills.
CONCRETE BIRD HOUSE(Pair Work) By observing many of bird nests in the nature, most of them are bowl-like. To simplify the shape, we came up wth the square frustrum composing of parallel lines and radial lines insteand of curved ones. Also our intention is to have a pair of twin birdhouses. which are separated but with some kinds of connections. Therefore,we thought of transforming the Square Frustrum. Since the shae is made of a top and base squares and four trapezoids.
1:20 TECTONIC MODEL STUDY(Individual work)
I never separate civil engineering and architcture. I think they support each other and a building will not exist without any of them.As doing architecture course, we may not as professional as civil engineer, but it is crucial to have the knowledge of tectonic. Architecture is not just about art design,it is much more than that. Le corbusier has claimed that a building is to create space to make users feel comfortable, that involve the aspects such as temperature, ventilation, humidity, and light. Building’s structure is one of the main factor that decide all these aspects.
RETHINKING COMMUNITY PLAN(Pair Work) The Golden Lane Estate is a 1950s council housing complex in the City of London. It was built on the northern edge of the City, in an area devastated by bombing during World War II. This Project is to redesign the center park near the hatfield house and add a cafe kiosk for the resident convinient
X-information Modelling - Park Democratization(Pair Work)
This project aims to use x information modelling system to find an relatively best way redistribute central park to the rest of the Manhattan city so that residents could have equally access to green area.Original Manhattan Unit park service area is more than 100 which means that parks are under great pressure. At the same time the number for Central Park is only 3.5 which means low efficiency usage of the park. After redistribution, unit park service area should be in a reasonable range which is 33.26-51.7. Also the area of walkable distance to park has increased as much as 20% in some iteration. However, after our redistribute, the retail ratio dropped from 3.13 to 2.63 which means the way to redistribute parks could be improved.
