Nu-Arch BRIEFDevelop an ambitious, self-directed socially focussed brief reflecting advanced interior practices.

CONCEPTNu-Arch is an adaptive re-use project which aims to be a short-term artist residency located next to the iconic ‘Barra’s Market’ in the east end of Glasgow. The project seeks to remove barriers, encourage engagement and foster creative ways of experiencing art. Allowing for a more open access relationship between the artist and the public. The project brings together two ongoing issues, aiming for one to help address the other. Highlighting the ongoing regeneration of the area with the intention of retaining the rich history and heritage of the Barras. Brining more business and development to the area. With hope of stitching the market back into the fabric of the city. Also providing inexpensive, flexible studio space for up to 6 artist. Placing them squarely within the community and supporting Glasgows ever growing creative scene.

//IN RESIDENCY

A space for for artists to live while under the residency programme. Separate sleeping pods and communal kitchen, living space is offered encouraging cross collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

Design for sleeping pods occupied by artists under the residency programme. Inspiration was taken from small structures and human ergonomics, each small space would contain a sleeping area and washing area. The portal window which can be accessed through external stairs draws from sailors sleeping quarters on ships.

Life-Line BRIEFDesign an inclusive, accessible and multigenerational kitchen space or kitchen component that works for all ages, as well as for disabled and non-disabled family members, so they can prepare, cook and serve food, entertain, engage in hobbies or work and enjoy life together.

CONCEPTGrowing older is a natural part of life regardless of any factor which separates our society today. Loss of hearing, memory and strength are all a natural part of growing older. Inspired by English draughtsman, Harry Beck best known for creating the present London underground tube Map in 1931. LifeLine is a navigational network design solution that keeps you stimulated and aims to offer support not force it. LifeLine bends and curves around the space creating three separate routes that highlight key routines or actions in the kitchen. Tactile textures, audio and visual alerts support peoples ageing needs. Contrasting colours aim to act as a subtle way finding system to help with memory or dementia sufferers navigate around the kitchen in a safe manner. Durability of bars offers people with mobility issues the independence to move freely around the whole kitchen.LifeLine only revels its true meaning and worth once you need the extra support- a kitchen support for life.

Block T BRIEFDesign a future workplace within a post industrial building for a new breed of built environment disciplines in which Interior Design is the leading partner. Consider one or more ‘partner’ disciplines to co occupy this new environment.

CONCEPTBlock T explores how the influence of how technology could change our workplaces floor plan and spacial requirements. Using game terminology and design reference from the retro game -Tetris, to create a 24 hour vessel that allows employees more control and flexibility over their work lives. Block T is made up of famous tetrominoes shapes taken from the game. These configurations are used to make both entry, exit points and and internal arrangement, with free space between used as communal break space. Creating a dynamic floor plan that follows a lattice model, where employees can move freely. Included in the space will be private individual work blocks, group blocks, design workshop, a sustainable materials library, archives and VR station - where clients can walk through designs virtually at meetings. Included in the proposal is a ‘tech free’ building filled with greenery, archives and a terrace offering an escape from technology when needed. As much as technology has advanced one thing remains the same that as creative beings we thrive on human interactions and connection. Block T offers the perfect balance of both and encourages collaboration and control of ones environment.

The Hot House BRIEFAsked to create own brief in preparation for undertaking thesis project in 4th year. To develop speculative narrative strategies for new-build, existing buildings and/or urban sites. How does it reflect contemporary contexts in relation to historical, social, political, issues? Align your creative vision alongside an understanding of issues in present day.

CONCEPTMy selected site ‘The Winter Gardens,’ Springburn Park, 1899, Simpson & Farmer, hothouse builders, once the largest glasshouse in Scotland. My proposal plans to restore and renovate the building keeping original features and bring it back into circulation for the users of the park and support the youth in the surrounding community. Through research and cultural probes I found a lack of moral and ambition within the local youth. Along with a bad reputation and unkind perception from local authorities towards the young people who use the park.‘The Hot House’ aims to help with the growth and confidence of young people. Developing a stronger and more positive relationship between all generations. By gaining new skills and unlocking young peoples potential. An investigation into local statistics found 40% of pupils were registered for free school meals. This discovery influenced the role the building would hold. A catalyst for change and safe place to ask for help. A GROW, LEARN, SHARE mentality would allow for both educational, wellness and nutritional growth for young people. To understand the importance of well-being and personal growth.

Shed-25 BRIEFTo design a bespoke water pipe feature within the internal street at ‘Waters Edge’ in Dundee. The planned location have existing temporary rainwater pipes that feed from a valley gutter at the head and link to the underground drainage system below.

CONCEPTShed 25 is an historic Category B-listed building situated between Camperdown Dock and Victoria Dock in the Port of Dundee. It is the oldest surviving transit shed in Dundee and is steeped in the history and heritage of the city. The aspiration was to integrate this derelict piece of history into the ongoing Dundee Waterfront masterplan development, and provide an exciting space for the community to benefit from. Pulling inspiration from significant streets in Dundee, related to the cities import and export history using the dock. The sculpture is made up of shapes and forms found through site investigations. Creating a twisting and turning feature, suggesting the routes taken by, foot, road and sea. In collaboration with Waters Edge, Dundee and Nicoll Russell Studios, Dundee.

Central Dischord BRIEF- An interactive installation and exhibition

in collaboration with Dundee City Council and the RIAS Festival of Architecture. Castle Street Pend, Dundee, 2018

CONCEPTThis installation seeks to showcase a creative architectural intervention in reigniting pockets of underused city centre space and raise awareness for potential further cultural collaboration to keep the city centre alive. Exploring the issue of underused city centre space and a shifting city centre considering the newly developed Waterfront in Dundee. As a class we were exploring the issue of underused city centre space and a shifting city centre considering the newly developed Waterfront in Dundee. Our installation combined a 3D map and a triangular apparatus that reflects our own interpretation of a tension imposed by the changing city centre.The map itself represents a linear timeline of Dundee’s iconic landmarks; from the creation of the Dundee Law through to the V&A on a horizontal axis. These landmarks occupy the timeline on a vertical axis with their individual latitudes defined relevant to sea level. It includes other iconic Dundee landmarks: The Royal Arch, The Caird Hall, The R.R.S. Discovery and The Mills Observatory.

DJCAD Degree Show BRIEFAs part of the annual DJCAD Degree Show, our IED class of 2019 where tasked with designing our own space in the halls gallery space. The succesful design had to be both functional and striking. Our choosen design named the ‘red carpet’ included vinyl text, a trellis from which an emotive object and bulb could hang above each table. The exhibition ran from the 18 - 26 May 2019 for 10 days we showcased a culmination of several years of creative development and hard work.
