When can I submit an application for US Citizenship? In case, if you are a permanent or conditional resident of the US, someone who have a green card without this, you cannot apply for US citizenship as this is the basic rule. There is another rule according to that you have lived in the US as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years and that means exactly five years, to the date you apply. For an instance, if you were approved for permanent residence on May 17th, 2008, you would be eligible for citizenship on May 17th, 2013. Now you can check your so-called permanent or green card for the exact date on which you can get a permanent US Citizenship. What is 90-Days Early Application Rule? Actually, you are allowed to submit your naturalization application to U.S, (USCIS) Citizenship and Immigration Services within the 90-days before your five-year anniversary has arrived. You can use a form provided by USCIS called an "N-400", you have to submit that by mail only. A long process will be taken by USCIS, the N-400, to arrange for an interview at which it actually reviews your permanent resident application, tests you on your knowledge and understanding of English and about the US government. All these processes will make a decision whether to approve or deny your application US Citizenship. USCIS will in all probability take at least 90 days to call you for an interview that is why it has officially said that you are safe applying within that time of it.


Spouses of U.S. Citizens in Certain Overseas Job: Exception of FiveYear Rules In case, if your spouse has a job requiring you to live overseas, then you may be able to apply for citizenship without completing five years of permanent residence. Though, there are a number of limitations on which you can use this provision. Like, you must be regularly stationed abroad due to your spouse's employment. Second, you also must declare an intention to live in the US when your spouse's employment ends. Lastly, your spouse's employer must be either any one of them:  The US government employ such as in the military, the CIA, the Peace corps, or in the American Red Cross.  Working with the US research institution that has been recognized by attorney general.  Working with the US firm or corporation that is occupied in developing US foreign trade and commerce.

Other Requirements A final note of caution to you: Even if you have spent the mandatory amount of time with a green card, you may need to linger longer before applying for US citizenship if you either:


 You have not spent the mandatory amount of time physically present in the US.  You have not lived for at least three months in the state or in the district where you are filing your application.  You cannot yet demonstrate that you've had good moral character before applying for US citizenship.
