5 years of Krabi Magazine
Although Ton and I have been running our business for over 5 years, we are just as excited by what we do now as we were 5 years ago. What’s more, we have found ways to bring our business forward with new projects that build on, and enhance, what we are already doing – like 81000 Maps and Krabi Miniguides. Our publication evolved from a local newspaper to a magazine very fast. At the beginning the magazine was called Krabi News, it was a black and white newspaper in A3 format and it was clear straight away that we had the niche market for this kind of publication: targeted to the visitors, with interesting articles on tours and on locations in the Krabi area and with stunning pictures. It was only after 9 issues that, with the consensus from our advertisers, we decided to go full color with issue 10. For the first 2 years, it was me who wrote all the articles in the magazine, and Ton who took all the pictures and designed the magazine – a two men business. We later met many of our occasional and feature writers and photographers through networking, and some via old friendships. Wanting to have writers and photographers who could really speak from experience, we chose visitors, many with little writing or photographing experience. Over the past few years, we have added a Koh Lanta section and a Real Estate section, with our biggest issue reaching 108 pages! We originally planned to have a magazine that was distributed in Krabi province only. Much to our surprise, we have attracted strong readership in places all over the country and the world, and we now distribute all over Thailand and post out magazines monthly to several readers worldwide. Wanting to give our readers a voice, we started a Facebook Fan Page. This allows our readers multiple ways to give us feedback and to chat about the beauties of Krabi. It’s been 5 years and we’re still very excited about what we do. We hope you are too.
Our Editorial Mission We firmly believe that the better tourists understand their Krabi surroundings and the better informed they are of the Krabi tourist agenda, the more likely they are to enjoy Krabi and to take an active role in the keeping Krabi the place they have come to love: green, friendly, warm in the heart. This is the way we love Krabi too. Through an interesting editorial mix, colorful photography, and professional design and layout, Krabi Magazine is the premier English-language publication targeting visitors and residents in the area. Recognizing that there are many people in Krabi who are less fortunate than the average one of us, and that there are natural places and animals in danger due to the fast progress and development the area is experiencing, Krabi Magazine is committed to raising awareness for charity organizations and other noble causes, and will encourage others in the community and in the tourist sector to do the same.

In the high season peak month of December, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand, celebrates his 83rd Birthday. Happy birthday Your Highness. Krabi Magazine is much younger and celebrates it 5th birthday. Time really does fly! In our five years at the helm, both Khun Ton and I have dedicated great energy to Krabi Magazine’s inimitable style. We celebrate this month with a special double cover showing a printout of all the covers up to date for our readers. We’ve got more rounds of offbeat travelling tales including a trip to the Krabi mangroves and kayaking in stunning Koh Hong. There are also some reviews worth checking out. Koh Lanta is indeed Krabi’s island destination par excellence where to dive, snorkel, relax and even meditate, as well as the place where to have some great food. Our team there finds the right cooking balance at Junie’s cooking school, sails to Lanta’s eastern islands and meditate at The Lanta Retreat. If you are after a property in Krabi, there is so much to read in our real estate section. You can get to know about architect Sumet Jumsai and his robot building, and about building a house as well as a good relation with a client; you will amaze at the beauty of rattan furniture, and at the quality of Villa Rattana; MD Italian kitchens present their range at the Krabi Town showhouse, and Norm tells us all aobut his dream house in the tropics.

THE ISLANDS
THE CULTURE
Hop on or hire a longtail, the local wooden boats with their picturesque prows. Sail away to Koh Poda, surrounded by turquoise waters, or to Koh Kai, shaped as a chicken and therefore called the Chicken Island, from where a walk on a sandy pathway connects it to Koh Tub. Make a longtail boat or speedboat trip to the Koh Hong archipelago, a group of limestone islands with hidden caves and lagoons perfect for kayaking or snorkeling. Join an organized tour to amazing Koh Phi Phi islands, full of marvelous bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life, caves where swallow nests are harvested, and much more. Visit Koh Jum and Koh Siboya, small, unspoiled tropical hide-away that have a unique atmosphere. These islands give visitors the time to relax and re-charge their batteries. Or venture out on Koh Lanta, the developing island at the southern end of the province home to sea gypsies communities, where you will meet nature and tradition. A National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai and remote Koh Rok.
Ban Natin, on the way from Ao Nang to Klong Muang, is the place to experience the peaceful lifestyle of the local Muslim community. Home accommodation is available, or you can simply make a stopover and see the production of handmade products such as batik paintings, pineapple-fiber paper and coconut shell carving. Wat Klong Thom Museum features various kinds of beads, stone tools, and stone and earthen ornaments in animal shapes of approximately 5,000 years old, uncovered during archeological excavations. Fire dancing, part of the beach culture, is a popular evening activity on the beaches of Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi, performed by acrobatic boys who swing burning torches around their bodies, creating sparkling artistic pictures. Ban Sang-Ka-U is a sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.

THE BEACHES Ao Nang, at 20km from Krabi Town, is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches, a long stretch of white sandy beach with limestone mountains as a backdrop. It has a wide range of accommodation and services and the main shopping street features restaurants, bars, pubs, souvenir shops, dive centers and tour agencies, massage centers and spas. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. Noppharat Thara beach, just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and at weekends. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. Railay beaches are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, rocky islands emerging from the sea. Railay can only be reached by boat, a 15 minutes ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing course, hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. Neighbouring Tonsai lies at the base of a cliff which divides it form Railay West. Tonsai has a shallow beach with slow gradients out to sea which is profoundly affected by the tide. Klong Muang beach is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get the so deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. Tubkaek beach is another real place to hide away; long, clean and peaceful, the area has breathtaking views over Koh Hong islands archipelago, and charming sunsets. From there you can venture inside the National Park and try a walking trail to a viewpoint and a waterfall. Koh Lanta beaches have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai.

NATURAL HOTSPOTS Limestone mountains or karsts, characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the massifs of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. One must find a broken edge to see the shells clearly, since all of those on the upper surface have been walked on and worn down by the elements and are hard to identify. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. Tarnbok Khoranee National Park, in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well-known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. Phi Hua Toh Cave, in the nearby Bor Thor area, surrounded by mangrove swamps and reachable by boat or kayak, is where to see pre-historic rock paintings depicting animals and humans. Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis in which to lift away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral-enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.
THE TOWN Small, charming, silent at times, nice for a day’s walking tour. Krabi Town is full of old buildings, bars and restaurants, local exotic marketplaces and food stalls at the old Chao Fa pier where to sample the local food. The Krabi motto is: “lively town, lovely people”; Krabi’s simple people are definitely proud of their town and of their warm and generous character. Hop on a longtail boat at Chao Fa pier and visit Khao Kanab Nam, the unique pair of hills facing each other on the opposite banks of the Krabi River, symbols of the town; or embark on a journey to Koh Klang, an island next to town on the mouth of the river, where you will experience lives lived by the local fishing communities; or charter a boatman for a visit to the mangrove backwaters.
THE TEMPLE Located just 9 km from Krabi Town the Wat Tham Seua, or Tiger Cave Monastery, is one of south Thailand’s most famous and interesting forest temples, as the monks live, meditate and worship within a maze of natural caves in an overgrown jungle valley. Many Thai women live out their oldage there as nuns. Explore the inner cave used by monks for meditation. Climb the 1,237 steps up a limestone tower to see the statue of the Buddha and the “footprint of the Buddha” embedded in the rock, and to enjoy one of the best viewpoints of the area. Take the circular walk through Krabi’s rarest of all features, a pocket of primary lowland forest, a circular rocky basin enclosed by high cliffs. Here, along a pathway used by monks to meditate and amongst a number of magnificent trees you can be amazed in front of the largest flared root base of any tree remaining in Thailand.

Krabi River’s Backwaters
A visit to mangroves and wildlife with Jilad Cat
L
ast month we were invited to take part of one of the inaugural sailing trips of Jilad Cat, on an inspection tour of the Krabi canals of mangroves to discover their natural treasures. The Jilad Cat is a small fibreglass catamaran propelled by a silent 18-horse-power electric engine. It can accommodates comfortably up to 8 people and 3 crew, it has comfortable seats covered by leather cushions, a canvas roof, a cabin and a toilet, and it is a safe vessel even in rough seas.
While Krabi Town is not as touristy and bustling as some of the province’s other tourist destinations, it is a place that offers many lovely, interesting and exotic activities. One of them is exploring its mangroves canals on a catamaran.
16
Owner Khun Bee hails from Bangkok but has been in Krabi for 28 years, “long enough to consider myself Krabi people”, she jokes. Her son Peter runs the boat with the help of local youngsters in green uniform, experienced in navigating the local rivers. Having made the initial introductions, the Jilad Cat leaves the Krabi River Marina, at Krabi Town Thara Park, where it is usually moored, and started the journey upriver. We navigated slowly alongside the mangrove coastline, with Krabi’s highest mountain Khao Phanom Bencha clearly visible in the distance with a single puffy cloud towering above it. Tiger cave temple shone at the top of one of the distant hills. We were given an information booklet and after a while Khun Bee started informing us about the mangroves, the thick and impenetrable trees that fringe part of the Krabi coastline, covering an area of 1,440 hectares that are fundamental for protecting the local ecosystem. We were told mangroves used to be cut to make charcoal and then shipped to Singapore and Indonesia. This practice has been stopped by the Queen of Thailand, who has declared this a protected area for the preservation of the local wildlife and flora. These mangrove forests are home to some of the most incredible flora and fauna, including near-extinct birds, monitor lizards, monkeys and all sorts of crabs and mudskippers. Some of the local plants existing within the mangrove forest are used in medicine to cure skin disorders and even leprosy. Khun Bee turned out to be a real expert on mangrove environment.
Krabi Magazine
We soon reached Khao Kanab Nam; at 4.30 pm, the area was very quiet and devoid of tourists. Khao Kanab Nam is regarded as the symbol of Krabi; these two limestone pillars known as the Two Swords rise up over 100 meters from the water, facing each other, and contain caves complete with stalactites and stalagmites. They are part of a National Conservation Area of 4 million square meters and home to many different species of fish, monkeys and birds. These two dog ear shaped rocks are separated by the Krabi River and form the town’s most prominent landmark. Human skeletal remains have been found in the biggest cave, and legend would like them to be the remains of an ancient civilization. During World War II, Japanese soldiers established a base in the Klong Phra Song district. At the end of the war, this spot was used as a burying ground both for these soldiers, and also to accommodate the burial remains of Thai victims, a sort of a natural morgue. We disembarked at the entrance of the elevated path that leads to Tham Ruam Pol cave. Thousands of Puu Kam Daab (Fiddler Crabs) with a single nipper populate the beach area, digging millions of little holes in the sand looking for food. Hundreds of mudskippers roam freely amongst them. We climbed a wooden staircase that took us to the inside of the cave.
After a visit to the inside of the cave, with its spectacular lunar landscape, we continued our catamaran trip back to town, cruising alongside the mangrove coastline and keeping our eyes open for a possible spotting of Gurney’s Pittas birds, or other of the several species of birds that inhabit the area. Elusive monkeys watched us sailing past them; a Brown-winged Kingfisher flew besides us. A white heron patiently stood on a mangrove tree branch, impassive at our passage. We found out that it’s possible to sail upriver for approximately 5 kilometers, and to venture inside the endless canals that converge on the main estuary and divide the many mangrove-covered islands. The sun had set and Khun Bee and Peter told us more about the Jilad Cat tour. They always bring along a couple of kayaks with them, towed behind the catamaran, to give the chance to tourists to venture inside small canals where the catamaran cannot go, and also have fishing rods and binoculars on board. Jilad Cat is branded as Ecotourism, and we could see why. It is a tour that respects the local environment, employs local people and provides tourists with infinite information about the nature and its inhabitants. We found the tour well organized, and do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is after an original and eco-friendly small adventure during their holiday in Krabi, affordable and fun for all.
THE TOURS Jilad Cat operates with a minimum of 2 passengers. You can choose from a range of 3 hours trips that include morning tour 9 to 12am, afternoon tour 14 to 17pm, evening tour 16 to 19pm and moonlight tour 18 to 20.30 pm. Tours start at 1,100thb per head. Full-day trips are available 9am to 15pm, at 1,600thb per head. Tariffs include transfer from/to hotel, English speaking guide, drinking water and a light snack on board, and insurance. There is only a single Jilad Cat at the moment, but Khun Bee plans to introduce a fleet of small catamarans for the exploration of the local mangroves areas. For booking or to receive further information, please contact Khun Bee or Peter at 081 6919331, 075 662115, or email them at jilatcat@gmail.com Krabi Magazine

ith their dense vegetation, thick and often smelly mud, mangroves are not generally perceived to be particularly appealing habitats to visit. Yet this ecosystem has a diverse and fascinating flora and fauna, and plays a critical role in the conservation of the coast and the productivity of the sea. Mangroves thrive in sheltered bays where rivers have deposited nutrient-rich sediment. Mangrove trees can withstand severe environmental stress including alternating mixes of fresh and salty water, prolonged submersion or exposure with every tide, and mud that has no oxygen and high sulphur content.

A walk through a mangrove forest is made difficult by these very adaptations to the changing environment that the mangrove trees must survive. Nonetheless, mangrove forests are the home to many large and small animals. For, while South Thailand’s mangroves may have lost their two largest predators, the tiger, and the estuarine crocodile, there remain many splendid creatures of which the lucky may still catch a glimpse. Among the species most commonly observed are: langurs feeding on leaves, civets feeding on fruit, crab-eating macaques, monitor lizards, cobras, the black and yellow mangrove snake, the small-clawed and hairy-nosed otters, fishing cats, brown-winged and ruddy kingfishers, masked finfoot, chestnutbellied malkoha, buffy fish owl, brahminy kites, and the rare mangrove pitta. But in fact it is not these fauna that make this ecosystem so vitally important. Rather, the richest life is in the mud. Mangroves play a critical role as the “oceans’ nursery ground” for the sea’s fish, shrimp larvae, crabs and crustacea.

The coastal people of Thailand have long cherished the mangroves as a source of foods, medicine and fuel. Medicines include treatments for lumbago, skin diseases, VD and impotency. The Nipa Palm, a species that marks the transition from fresh to saline waters is used for everything from waterproof roof-thatching to cigarette wrappings. Villagers even produce a weak wine from mangrove trees to celebrate special occasions.

Kayaking Koh Hong
Paddle to the hidden rooms of the Andaman Sea
A
There are 132 islands around the Krabi coastline, many of them only small rocky outcrops and others larger and uninhabited. Without any doubt the most exclusive group of all is the tiny Koh Hong archipelago.

Krabi Magazine
hint of the Hong Islands, one of the many archipelagos situated at the heart of the Andaman Sea, is the perfect starting point to sun, sand and some serious adventure time. Situated approximately 20 minutes longtail boat ride away from Ao Thalane, the Koh Hong group of Islands is a stunning getaway. Koh Hong, the main Island, has two of the most beautiful beaches you are ever likely to feast your eyes on, as well as a hidden lagoon. We left Ao Thalane for our trip to paradise. I shared idyllic comments with our guide and the rest of the tourists, two Thai couples, as the Sea Kayak Krabi longtail boat navigated along many differently shaped but similarly green lavished, limestone islets. The captain was confident manoeuvring the boat, until we reached Koh Hong.
Koh Hong Island The longtail docked in the Koh Hong bay, the National Park headquarters, where a few longtail boats where anchored along the main shore. The bay was simply stunning, a long stretch of crystalline beach with a fairly wide forested area behind it and a huge stone that characterizes the front, emerging from the water barely 10 meters from the sand. The harbour burst with life and colours. I strolled on and bumped into various amenities: an information point with an operator behind a kiosk selling drinks; next to it, big wooden dining tables and benches were shaded by the abundant vegetation. Sea Kayak staff unloaded the kayaks, we boarded them and started paddling. We stayed as near as we could to the limestone walls and circumnavigated the island anticlockwise until we reached the north and could see a never-ending
array of topographic conformations: the rest of the islands in the Koh Hong archipelago; Koh Ladin, Koh Pakbia, and a handful more. The wind was against us, and paddling started to get hard. But the destination got near and nearer, and we kept going despite the efforts. One of the main attractions of Koh Hong is the Clat Lagoon, a hidden chamber - hong in Thai means room - accessible through a relatively narrow entrance within two high cliffs. We reached the lagoon and cheered up. Inside this natural amphitheatre, young mangrove trees dotted the sea floor sowing off their beautiful and uneven roots that generate from the un-submerged part of their trunks. We kept paddling along high cliffs
Ao ThalaneTrips
dropping straight into the sea, circumnavigating the perimeter surmounted by these towering cliffs. We stopped briefly in an area where the sea floor was dotted by dozens of starfish. What miracles nature is capable of, I contemplated as I observed marine life. It was time to paddle back to the main bay. We arrived there and rested for an hour on the warm sand. Most of the tourists present earlier had left already and it was the perfect time for a quiet exploration of the surrounding. Eventually, the longtail boat left for the trip back. Tired, silent and contemplative, I marvelled at the extreme beauty of the places which all around relayed upon me; virtual postcards of the beautiful Koh Hong archipelago.

SOME EXTRA INFORMATION
GETTING THERE
Koh Hong is named after the hong, Thai for room, and this refers to this natural limestone amphitheatre created within the island by erosion during the eras. It all began as a cave system that collapsed inwards and eroded to sea level, leaving only a large lake with a small passage to the sea; at high tide longtail boats can enter this strange rocky arena, and one can swim in water a meter or more deep. The rest of the Koh Hong islands include Koh Lao or Koh Sa Ka and Koh Lao Riam. The archipelago is located 25 km northwest of Ao Nang Bay, its attractions being spectacular beaches and hidden lagoons brimming with shoals of colourful fish, shallow and deep-water coral reefs and various kinds of birds. Popular activities include snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, sea canoeing and nature studies on the 400-meter hiking trail around Koh Hong. Koh Hong is a popular destination for environmentally friendly sea canoe trips. Permanent wildlife includes sea eagles and starfish. It is worth to remember that the archipelago is free from tourist accommodation and that is inside the marine area of Tarnboke Khoranee National Park, inland. The ranger’s house is in Koh Hong bay and visits require the payment of a 200 baht National Park fee, unless you visit as part of a tour. Camping facilities are available, though limited and not easy to book; the charge is 20 baht per person.
Ao Thalane can be reached via highway N.4 direction Phuket; once in Au Luk District (40 minutes from Krabi) follow the English signs. There are also signs for Akanak Resort.

ACTIVITIES A day trip to one of Krabi’s mangrove forests to paddle among the limestone karsts is one of the most popular excursions for holidaymakers to the region. Ao Thalane offers a perfect opportunity for not only some of the region’s best kayaking – among the limestone cliffs lie tidal lagoons, caves, tunnels, an abundance of wildlife as well as some interesting rock art - but also easy access to one of southern Thailand’s most beautiful islands.
THE ENVIRONMENT When visiting Ao Thalane and Koh Hong Islands, please maintain the natural environment that you will find in the lagoons, mangroves, jungles, hongs and caves. We strongly discourage touching, eating, smoking and the removal of any flora and fauna as souvenirs. Choose a tour agency that limits the number of tourists in a group to avoid overcrowding. This ensures ‘low impact, high quality’ operations. We recommend the use of a traditional longtail boat.

Wedding in Thailand
A FEW KAYAKING TIPS On of the most important points is to achieve a good forward stroke; you will then move ahead with the minimum effort, you will not put too much stress in your joints and will keep your back and bottom from getting stiff. Also… Keep straight arms and force your torso to rotate to move the paddle. Sit up straight and make sure your arms are well stretched out. Apply a loose grip on your left hand as you push away, letting the paddle so the work. Stop propulsion when the paddle blade reaches the hip line, if you go any further it will take you off course and you will tire your shoulder joint pointlessly.

Blue-Tailed Bee-Eater
Photos : www.kohjumbeachvillas.com
T
owards the end of October and into November, avian visitors on the wing migrate into Krabi Province from the north. Migratory birds mark the changing of the seasons and one of the most spectacular and easily seen visitors is the Blue-Tailed Bee-Eater. They frequent open coastal areas and can often be seen in groups on solitary trees and electrical wires in open rural areas. Here on Koh Jum Beach Villas they arrive at the end of October and are found regularly along the entrance road usually perched in the open on Melaleuca trees. They are present during most of the high season and head back up north to their breeding areas in March. The Blue-Tailed Bee-Eater like most of its tribe feeds on stinging insects along with other large insects like dragonflies and butterflies. They sally out from their perch and capture their prey on the wing by gaining speed and sweeping down on them. For this reason they are usually found perched at least 7 meters above the ground which happens to be the relative height of electrical wires where they are frequently seen in rural areas. When they catch a large stinging insect like a wasp or bee they can often be observed whacking the insect on a branch before feeding. They are acrobatic flyers and fortunately they have adapted to disturbed areas like open roadside habitats and the margins of agricultural areas and rural human settlements. They can be found in scrub and forest habitats, in mangroves and grasslands. The Blue-Tailed Bee-Eater breeds, forages and migrates in large groups. Sometimes up to 50 birds can be seen in open areas feeding together and up to hundreds have been observed roosting in the evening. Take a walk here on Koh Jum in the late afternoon along the beach and dip inland just 50 meters or so in open scrub habitat and you can observe these spectacular birds in beautiful lighting sallying forth in large groups foraging for their last bees, wasps, dragonflies and butterflies before going off to their secret roosting areas.

Getting Eye Glasses
at S.K. Optik in Ao Nang
I recently bought eyeglasses at S.K. Optik in Ao Nang and was thrilled at both cost and service.
T
he last time I walked into and ophthalmologist practice I was a young boy trying to fight a lazy eye, the left one. This never happened, and though my condition has been overcome by the perfection of my right eye, after 20 years of constant daily sessions in front of a computer, I felt it was time to give my eyes a break. I needed glasses. I had heard that S.K. Optik in Ao Nang was the best in town, and had read several good reviews on the place, and I decided to give it a go. When I got there, I immediately realized I was at the right place. Three nice ladies smiled as I entered the shop, and S.K. Optik owner immediately greeted me. Mr. Nuttanrittisit Kitti, also known as Billy, is a professional ophthalmologist with perfect English, and a Varilux Specialist, one of only 6 in Thailand, having completed Varilux University education program in 2002. Billy took care of me personally, and my eyes were immediately checked with an ophthalmoscope for any problems. Then I was shown into the eye examination room at the back of the shop, where my complete eye exam began. I read test charts with near vision and far vision, small letters and numbers, until Billy diagnosed a strong astigmatism, a refraction error of the eye in which there is a difference in degree of reflection in different meridians. Astigmatism causes difficulties in seeing fine detail, and this is exactly what my left eye does. There is no chance for me to recover at my age or to correct the condition with glasses, but I had known this, and was only looking to get over readers. Billy checked many times with different lenses to make sure the lenses he finally chose were accurate. While I had my eyes tested, several tourists entered the shop and were immediately attended. Once my eye exam was over, I was shown back out into the main shop area where I started my shopping session for the frame. The choice of Scandinavian and European style glasses, both reading and sunglasses, was excellent. Only quality brands, only originals, no copies: Ray Ban, Oakley, Porsche, Tommy Hilfiger, Levis’, Cartier, Gucci, D&G, Prada, you name it. For someone like me who has never worn eyeglasses in his life, I wanted the best and went for a titanium frame from Porsche, without even looking at the price tag and hoping my credit card would absorbe the hit. Boy, was I wrong? The price was not as near as what I had expected it to be. I really started wondering how come the price was at least 50% cheaper than in Europe and started a chat with Billy

about the matter. It was easy to understand: “Thanks to our high number of shops our family own, 6, we buy bulk and can get lower prices from manufacturers”, said Billy, who also told me that “while most businesses in Ao Nang pay high rents, this shop belongs to me and my home is above the shop. My running costs are much lower than other shops, and this is reflected in the price of my glasses”. Billy has been opened in Ao Nang for over 8 years; his father has been in the optic business for 50 years, his brothers and family members run 6 optician shops in Southern Thailand destinations that include Krabi, Ao Nang, Koh Lanta and Koh Samui. He has been the 1st optician in Ao Nang, and still spends most of his days in his shop, a guarantee of quality and professionalism. On his desk, there were several references and business cards of people he has served over the years; “I have many more but not enough space to display them,” he proudly stated. It was indeed the best choice and I am happy with my designer’s eyeglasses. Billy and S.K. Optik provided with the level of professional optical services I expected, and at the right price.
FACTS Eye visit is included in the glasses price at S.K. Optik. They offer a range of professional eye examinations and fitting, professional eye test and fitting Varilux Panoramic Demo, try to see instant sharp panorama vision at any distance, read and look and walk and run/up and down and left and right. Chandee Restaurant Your all-you-can-eat buffet in Ao Nang Wandering around Ao Nang with my wife and looking for a nice and convenient place to have dinner, I was delighted to come across an all-youcan-eat BBQ place for just 200 baht per person.
C
handee Restaurant is the place in Ao Nang for buffet all-you-can-eat Thai and International food at affordable prices. With a casual, spacious, bright and family-friendly atmosphere, Chandee Restaurant offers an extensive buffet with authentic flavors, efficient service, fresh food and casual atmosphere. On the outside, we immediately noticed the BBQ station with its succulent choice of steaks loins, T-bones, prawns and squid. Clients would pick their choice, hand it to the cook who would BBQ it for them on the spot and serve it to their table when ready. On entering the spacious and airy restaurant area, we were greeted by polite staff in uniform, who sat us on a nearby table. Speakers played soft jazz music and there was a nice soft light. The tables were properly set, and we kind of forgot for a moment we were having a cheap meal. There were families with kids, and couples of all ages sitting and chatting and eating, commuting from the food stations to their tables with dishes nicely filled of all kind of food. The menu on show had a great selection of original Thai food, seafood and European food. The international food table sported a section that included fried or baked potatoes, roasted chicken, tasty and rich goulash, pasta al dente with veggies ad ham, salad buffet selection, spinach, and more. The Thai section had sweet & sour chicken, fried pork in oyster sauce, chicken with cashew nuts, massaman curry and more. The food is created by Thai chefs with emphasis on quality, taste and neatness. We ended our dinner with dessert: a chocolate cake and a choice of ice cream, followed by fruit of the season.

Yoga as a Learning Tool Marina runs a Yoga and Reiki center in Ao Nang. Back in Germany, Marina looked after children in her own kindergarten for over 15 year and she has been helping kids to understand themselves and to focus in their self-esteem for 30 years. Here in Thailand, Marina teaches Yoga to kids aged 3 and over.
W
hen you give kids yoga poses, use visualization, and allow them to move their bodies, their whole learning ability goes up several notches. When I teach kids, it’s not about telling them; it’s about creating experiences for them where they connect the dots, and create new dots.” Says Marina. Benefits in kids doing Yoga are various: improved concentration, controlled movements, inner peace of mind and body, development of stamina. Marina classes are structured in a friendly way and including role-plays. She often gets kids to imitate animals’ natural positions, which is an easy way to recreate Asana postures, with kids creating their own personal variations. Kids’ bodies are naturally flexible and tend to move uncontrolled. This is why they need to start Yoga at an early age in order to prevent late damage from wrong postures. “We teachers have all had children with challenging behavior in our classes, whether at school or in a studio, and we all know just how much this behavior can take your class off task if we allow it to. In my opinion that’s why children should try Yoga to calm their mind.” Adds Marina. In order to achieve this, she plays “yoga safari”, where she lets the kids imagine what animals they run into. It’s fun and kids love it, and that is how she gets them to concentrate. “The relaxation part is the most difficult one; I start with stories and let the kids play their own imaginary parts. I also use singing bowls, place them on their chest; kids love the vibration. Now at the start of each class they are eager to get the sound bowl!” Each class at the beginning their ask when we start to use the sound bowl.”

MOTIVATION Marina challenged me on the hardship of getting boys motivated. I looked on the net for 15 minutes and hardly got anything, which is a pretty good indication of the popularity of yoga for boys. “Where are the books, DVDs and inspiration out there encouraging our boys to try yoga?” complains Marina. “My own son practiced some yoga with me in his younger years, but when he hit school age, going to yoga class suddenly became very un-cool to. ‘Yuck...yoga? That’s for GIRLS!’ his friends replied”. With the rise in diagnoses of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the like (most prevalent in boys), and a culture that demands an overscheduled, competitive lifestyle, there is no better time to give our boys the same wonderful yoga tools that have been made so accessible for girls.
HELP FOR YOUR KIDS Yoga helps children to learn how to control their energy so that they can focus and concentrate better. Marina goes on to explain: “I teach breathing techniques and poses that help them think more clearly. For example, bunny breath, short inhalations through the nose and a long exhalation through the mouth can energize kids who need to get focused in order to take a test. It helps the kids feel like they’re not passively listening. It’s interaction”. Although children are naturally flexible, they probably will not do the poses correctly in the adult sense of the word, so it’s important to keep things simple. More than learning the poses, the yoga experience will encourage kids to explore the unfamiliar with open minds and be comfortable in their bodies. For kids who are not good at (or don’t enjoy) conventional sports, yoga may provide a much-needed physical outlet in a noncompetitive environment. As they reach the teenage years, yoga can help young adults deal with their changing bodies and give them ways to combat stress in academic and social situations.
LEARN WITH THEM Why not do yoga at home with your kids? Marina invites you to try this wonderful experience at the class. She will give you plenty of ideas and patterns: “Put out mats for yourself and your children; let the kid choose some music, but make it parent’s choice during final relaxation. Introduce simple poses so your kids will feel a connection to them, such as those that relate to the natural world or represent shapes. Basic breath work can also be introduced to older children. Just learning to take deep breaths and clear the mind can be helpful to kids”. Marina Yoga also offers Reiki, personal training and more. Feel free to call 087 8981506 if you have any question or if you like to visit Marina Yoga center. You can also visit www.marinayoga.com

Koh Lanta Highlights
K
oh Lanta is situated in the southernmost tip of the Krabi province. It consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two islands and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors traveling by road from the main land pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai, the center of the tourist operations. Ban Sala Dan village, in the north of the island, is Lanta Yai’s commercial center, and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for new comers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast of the island and can all be reached by road: Kho Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays are all nice to relax and swim but might appear less stunning. The east coast of Koh Lanta Yay is flat and has many local villages scattered along its coastline. Koh Lanta has a very diverse cultural mix of people who have lived on the island in harmony for hundreds of years: Thai-Muslim, Thai-Chinese and the original sea gypsies still inhabit the place in harmony. The biggest town on the island is Lanta Old town. Boat trips to Koh Lanta are available during the monsoon free period from October to April. May to November see the closure of some of the island businesses and of the boat passenger services due to rough seas. A minibus service is the alternative way to reach the island via land. For boat schedule to/from Koh Lanta consult our Krabi Miniguide 81000.
Lanta Old Town It was once called Ban Si Raya and was the commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It is a picturesque place with, these Chinese timer shop-houses date back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen dock their longtail boats giving the whole scene a very Thai look.
Ba Kantiang Beach Spectacular crystal–clear seawater and soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy, this is why Ba Kantiang has come to symbolize an hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.
Lighthouse on Lanta Located in Tanod Cape, on the southernmost tip of the island, the lighthouse tower of Lanta is the perfect symbol of solitude. It is the place where immaculate nature still survives as it is rarely reached by tourists due to the rugged road conditions.
Koh Lanta National Park The park covers a marine area dotted with several small sandy islands surrounded by coral reefs. The headquarters is located on the island’s southern extremity.
Ban San-ka-u A sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.
Eco-tours These are run all year round from the east coast of Lanta Yai, not affected by the low season rough seas. Make your way to Thung Yee Pheng village for a trip with a local community - www.tungyeepeng.com, or book a tour with friendly and experienced Sun Tours - www.lantalongtail.com
Nature Because of its bio-diversity and richness of natural resources, Lanta is a good place for trekking. Explore limestone cave chambers and passageways in the Lanta caves, or walk upstream to the spring water waterfall, where to swim in cool rock pools.
Fire Dancing This is definitely one interesting part of the Lanta beach culture. A fire dancing show is usually performed by young boys performing twisting acrobatics swinging burning torches and ropes lit on fire around their muscular bodies. A distinguishing show that sparkles in the dark.

Getting to know Koh Lanta PLACES OF INTEREST Sang Ga-U Village People know Sang Ga-U Village mostly because it’s where one finds the Sea Gypsies. There are currently almost a hundred families in this village. The Sea Gypsies are mostly ‘entrepreneurs’ - they own their own fishing boats and they work daily - if the weather permits - they leave to the middle of the sea in the morning and get back in the afternoon with a bunch of seafood. Although friendly, they are reserved and shy people. They are Thai citizens, but even mainstream Thai tourists will have difficulty in understanding them since the Chao Lay have their own language. They still practice their traditional customs and ceremonies, and in March of every year, the Lanta festival celebrates such rituals unique to the Chao Lay people.
The Lighthouse Koh Lanta’s lighthouse is located in the premises of Mu Koh Lanta National Park, which is at the end of the west coast. To get to the national park is quite an adventure. First, you ought to drive a four-wheel drive vehicle (or a motorbike if you are a really great biker) as the road is bumpy and dangerous. A normal city-car will have a hard time climbing up and down the three-kilometer mountainous dirt passage. Inside the national park stands the lighthouse; it takes quite a climb to reach it, even at just a few meters away from the ground, but with a good pair of trainers you are all set. The view up there is sensational. From the high cliffs you will see turquoise water from a birds-eye view, the neighboring Koh Ngai, Koh Rok Nok and Koh Rok Nai islands. Once up, you will get a better panoramic view of the park. Here you will realize that Koh Lanta offers the best of both worlds with exotic beaches and tropical forest.
Viewpoint This viewpoint is actually misleading, as it is not a viewpoint per se, but a couple of restaurants; one is called Viewpoint, the other Khao Yai. Located on the hill, in between the mountain from the west coast to the east, both restaurants offer a stunning view of Koh Lanta Yai’s east coast, and the chance to watch the sunrise from their spacious terraces. They are also decent restaurants to drop by for lunch or dinner, or just for a drink. The picturesque landscape from up there is breathtaking. On the backdrop is the mainland, and islands such as Koh Nui, Koh Talenbeng, Koh Kham, Koh Bu Bu, Koh Po and Koh Ngai.

Local Products The Thai government has established a brand called OTOP - One Tambol (municipality) One Product - to help generate income to villagers. Thanks to this initiative, each locality in Thailand now specializes in producing some kind of art craft or traditional food and products. In Koh Lanta, these include batik textiles, wooden furniture, local coffee, herbs, crab cakes, shrimp crackers and handicrafts made from toey panan (pandanus tectorium soland), a local plant. In the fresh food department, there is hoi chak teen, a winged shell that looks like walking legs, referred as “feet” or ‘teen’ (in informal Thai). Of a smaller variety, this kind of shell is found in Krabi and nearby provinces. Hoi chak teen is eaten with a Thai seafood sauce which is an essential dip made with fish sauce, garlic, chilies, lime juice and sugar.
Money Matters There’s never a moment when you will encounter any cash shortage there, since Koh Lanta is conveniently dotted with ATM machines all over the island. For more serious banking activities, Siam Commercial Bank (Tel 075-620621/3) and Siam City Bank (Tel 075-611320), located in Saladan Village, operate Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 3:30pm. There is also a Western Union, just in case you need money from home instantly.
Immigration Office There is no immigration office in Koh Lanta. For visa extensions, visitors must contact the offices in Krabi. Krabi Immigration Office (Tel 075-611097) is located on Utarakit Road in Krabi Town.

Making a red curry paste from scratch, after a hour of handy tips, tasting herbs and sauces, getting information where to buy good Thai Ingredients at home, and what we should do with them.
Sweet, Sour, Salty, is the clue is to find the balance in food. This art isn’t easy even if you go to a cooking class at Time for Lime, on Koh Lanta in Thailand. You have to learn by trying and failing, both in life and in the art of cooking.

Believe it or not, Time For Lime is owned and created by Norwegian/American food lover Junie Kovacs. She has been cooking and experimenting with the Thai & fusion cuisine for 20 years, has come out with a “real” cookbook in Norway that is sold in book shops and online, and the English version is on its way. “The secret is to find the balance between the flavors, a few drops of too much limejuice or fish sauce can make a difference between a delicious dish or a horrible one” says Junie, who has tried and failed and tasted herself along the hard way to find the “right balance”. “I had a funny experience six years ago at the Laanta Lanta festival in Old Town in Koh Lanta where we held a free class where people could make their own Papaya salad Som Tam” continues Junie. “Many Thai people came to our stand as well, and when I asked ‘do you want to me to show you how to make it?’ they laughed and said: no thank you! So I stood silent and watched. Finally they put their salad on a plate and were about to leave. I said ‘Kor Toht Kha (excuse me) aren’t you going to taste it?’ Polite as Thai people are, they obliged, and then their smile disappeared. I asked ‘Does it taste good?’ They said no. So I tasted it and advised them on the ingredients they should have added. They did, and their salad tasted great. Their silent question was, how can a foreigner teach us to cook a Thai dish?”
The answer is passion. While we are pounding our curry paste, in an open-air kitchen right on the beach, with funky jazz music in the background and a chilled Italian wine and a fresh Mojito by our cutting board. Of course this can be done by a food processor, but grounding the herbs in a mortar gives more taste to the paste. You can buy ready-made curry paste at home, it is spicy because chili is there but they leave out a lot of the fresh herbs and spices. Make your own and freeze it says Junie, who has a secrete recipe on how to make the hard work easier: put on your favorite music, open a bottle of wine and wear as little clothes as possible‌

Koh BuBu and Koh Talabeng
Ko BuBu
Ko Talabeng
Ko BuBu is an island gem approximately 3 to 4 nautical miles from Lanta Old Town. It is a Robinson Crusoe island with thick vegetation in the middle, some 10-15 bungalows with a restaurant, sugar-fine sand, helpful locals, and foreign visitors that can be counted on the fingers of two hands (and that is at the peak of the season). It’s the sort of “get-away-from-it-all-and-lie-in-a-hammock” type of concept. Waters around the island are crystal-clear, with some opportunities for snorkeling and fishing off the rocks. The few local workers are friendly, helpful, and discreet. There is a nice walking trail for a short trek around the entire island, look for a large family of Southern Pied Hornbills that are usually spotted at sunset when it cools down.
Ko Talabeng is located off the East coast of Ko Lanta Noi; Ko Talabeng is a limestone island similar to Koh Phi Phi Lay. It is also famous in the itinerary of many kayak and long tail trips originating from Lanta Old Town. Ko Talabeng does have a few small beaches and during a low tide it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing swim next to the magnificent sheer cliffs. For the more daring you could explore some steep cliffs by foot and rope and visit an intriguing cave located at Talabeng Noi. Look out for small grey Macaw monkeys clinging to the rocks. It takes just a few hours to explore this fascinating island and you can do so during the Green Season as Ko Talabeng is located on the East coast of Koh Lanta and is not exposed to the open ocean, which makes it safe to visit by boat any time of the year.
Ko BuBu was unscathed by the 2004 Tsunami. Due to Bubu’s location, it is tucked safely behind Ko Poh and Ko Lanta, consequently the waves were very small when they arrived. The food on Koh BuBu is inexpensive and fresh, but on the minus side is the fact that you are “trapped” on the island until the next boat comes. This can be both a “minus” and a “plus”, however. Ko BuBu is a privately owned island and the rustic resort is open from Oct- May. During the “Green Season” Ko BuBu is still a superb spot to visit but there aren’t any services so don’t forget to bring your own food and drinks!

Mindfulness Meditation
A powerful tool to increase your level of concentration
L
earning to meditate can truly change a person’s life. I have many students who will agree on this statement. Because they get a device that helps them to stay in the presence instead of the past and the future. Through the practice we also get excellent tools to be used handling our emotions and thoughts, an achievement of personal development, how much of which you decide. This is a perfect method to handle a stressful life and lots of demands. The impact daily meditation and mindfulness practice has in humans life is indescribable. It truly can make the difference between career success and long sickness due to immense stress. Sadly, I experience this very often. But just as often I am fortunate to meet people with self insight who get hold of themselves before it is to late, and use a couple of weeks to learn how to regain control over their body and mind. Many of them use some of their vacation, every year, to come back and boost themselves again.

Krabi Magazine
My meditation technique starts with the body. Often we are totally cut off from our body, often as high up in the body as the chest, which makes it impossible to inhale properly. We breathe shallow instead of filling our lungs with air. Often it takes a while to learn to breathe correctly. It is also hard work to get to know your body again and learn to relax every muscle, but you quickly get your reward. You will feel that breathing truly is life; no breathing = no life. You realize that it is the breath that controls your body and mental response to stress. And when you rapidly relax your entire body before sleep, you experience the joy of regaining control over your muscles. When the body is totally relaxed and the breath is deep and slow, you easily fall asleep. You experience high quality sleep and you wake up refreshed, ready for a new demanding day. The mind is our big issue, and it will remind you about its existence frequently during the meditation course. The mind will battle with you, trying hard to get your attention away from practice, both with flatter and threat. But due to very effective mind-control-tools, you will succeed in conquering the mind. You will learn to increase your level of concentration. Your mind will obey you eventually; it just takes time and daily practice. You will experience the happiness of a quiet mind, and stay in the presence; this is what I call true happiness.

REAL ESTATE – Construction Text by : Rob Attwater
Sumet Jumsai Na Ayuthaya
And the robot building Intergalactic planetary planetary intergalactic Intergalactic planetary planetary intergalactic Another dimension another dimension another dimension and so on and on…
A
nyone familiar with the intro to the Beastie Boys’ song “Intergalactic”, I think that’s the name of it, would remember the video that went alongside it. Three middle aged men, the Beastie Boys, clad in what seemed to be some sort of nuclear waste testing overalls, rap and dance around a city whilst a building in the form of a robot battles with a giant monster type thing. Mimicking those terribly made but very iconic movies from Japan in the 80’s. The resemblance of the robot building featured in the video, in regards to the one that I am writing about in this article, is uncanny. Ok, before I continue, let me introduce to you the man who is responsible for the topic that I am writing about, a man who is very revered in terms of architectural design in the land of smiles and a man who has the title “Thai artist of the year” under his belt. Sumet Jumsai designed the Robot Building for the Bank of Asia in 2005. He had been asked by the Bank of Asia’s directors to design a building that reflected the modernization and computerization of banking and found inspiration from his son’s toy robot. Sumet designed the building in conscious opposition to postmodern styles of the era, particularly classical revivalism and hightech architecture. He praised the inception of postmodernism as a protest against puritanical, bland modern design, and called it “a protest movement which seeks to replace without offering a replacement”. Sumet dismissed mid-1980s classical revivalism as “intellectually bankrupt” and criticized the “catalogue[s] of meaningless architectural motifs” that characterized classical revivalism in Bangkok. He further dismissed high-tech architecture, saying that it engrosses itself in the machine. Sumet wrote that his building “need not be a robot” and that a “host of other metamorphoses” would suffice, so long as they could “free the spirit from the present intellectual impasse and propel it forward into the next century”. He also wrote that his design might be considered post-high-tech: rather than exhibiting the building’s inner workings, he chose to adorn a finished product with the abstractions of mechanical parts. His building, he argued, struck against the 20th Century vision of the machine as a “separate entity” often “elevated on a pedestal for worship” and, by becoming “a part of our daily lives, a friend, ourselves”, cleared the way for the 21st Century amalgam of machine and man.

The building was completed in 1986 at a cost of US$10 million. By the mid-1980s, architectural modernism had faded in Bangkok; this building is one of the last examples of the style. Every robotic aspect is well-planned and well-used. The robots eyes are the dining and meeting rooms of the executive suites, its eyelids are sunshades, and its antennae are lightning rods. His nuts were the biggest in the world at time of development. Planning regulations gave him his stepped-back sides and the blue curtain walls representing the color of the Bank of Thailand provide much-needed shade. If that wasn’t enough, the robot’s eyes were designed to wink at night along to music called The Robot Symphony by Jacques Bekaertra, a Bangkok composer. The building is 20 stories tall and has a total floor area of 23,506 m² (253,016 ft²). The floor areas decrease progressively at the 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 18th floors; the staggered shape both contributes to the robot’s appearance and is an efficient solution to setback regulations requiring an 18 degree incline from each side of the property line. The building’s ground floor is a double-height banking hall. The hall’s interior architecture, designed in association with the firm 7 Associates, was designed to further the robotic appearance of the building; four sculptures by Thai
artist Thaveechai Nitiprabha stand at the main door. Mezzanine floors located on each side of the banking hall contain offices and meeting rooms. The building’s second floor features a large multipurpose hall, offices, and training rooms, and its upper floors contain general office space. An eight-story parking garage is located behind the main building. The building’s decorative exterior contributes its building’s robotic appearance, though it often serves practical functions as well. Two antennas on the building’s roof are used for communications and as lightning rods. On the building’s upper facade, in front of the main meeting and dining rooms of the top executive suites, are two 6 m (19.7 ft) lidded eyeballs that serve as windows. The eyesballs are made of reflective glass; the lids are made of metallic louver. Nuts made of glass-reinforced concrete adorn the building’s sides; the building’s largest nuts measure 3.8 m (12.5 ft) in diameter and were the largest in the world at the time of their construction. The building’s east and west walls (the robot’s sides) have few apertures to shield its interior from the sun and to increase energy efficiency, and its north and south sides (the robot’s front and back) are tinted curtain walls whose bright blue color was chosen because it was the symbol of the Bank of Asia.

Architect Tips Story : Pierre-Yves Loriers
Building Good Relations Norbert and Isolde, a Franco-German couple, have just completed construction of their new holiday home in Ao Nang with Ton Company. Here, we talk to them about their experience, and take a tour of their house.
W
e’ve been coming to Krabi on holiday for more than 15 years. We have a good feeling about the place and we have many friends here, both Thai and expat. It’s always been a dream to spend more time here – and to own our own house as well. Even though we can’t use it as often as we would like now, it’s an investment for the future – especially with the rising prices. If we waited until we were ready to retire, we could probably not afford anything! “It all started with the piece of land. We have looked at many plots over the years, and have always been hesitant. But when we saw this one, Isolde made the decision! We bought it leasehold and made sure that our name was on the chanote [title deed] paper. The next step was to find a company to design and build the house we wanted. “Ton Company was recommended to us by a trusted friend here in Ao Nang; and we have not been disappointed. From the first contact we have felt very comfortable and secure, because they obviously know what they are doing. After discussing what we wanted, we visited the land together, and the architects took pictures and considered what would work on the sloping plot. They came up with the idea of an L-shaped house, which we liked. “After that, we went home to Germany. It was our first time building a house, so we just made some sketches on paper and brought them to show Ton next time we were in Krabi. Based on these, and some more conversations, his team produced a fantastic 3D model of how the house might look – you really got the idea of how it would be. Then we went over the small details of things like where to put plugs and switches; again they knew every question to ask, so nothing was forgotten. “They produced a blueprint, and then after some time reflecting, we decided to go ahead with the building. Ton did everything from that point: he arranged the building permit, and the blue and yellow house books [tabien baan, with yellow copy for foreigners]. We got the feeling you could rely on him completely. We could not be in Krabi during the construction, but we had nearly daily communication, via Skype or by email. And every week we got photos of the whole process at the building site. We felt like we were there!

B
“We had made a contract for the house to be finished within 240 days and – amazingly for Thailand – it was completed within this timeframe, including the water and electricity connections. Sure, there are some small jobs still to do, like landscaping, but this is minor work and we can still live here while it is being done. We were also happy because the project really was within the planned budget. There were some changes made to the plan during the building – for example, we added a gutter to the roof and a retaining wall – but the main project did not go over what we expected to pay. “Now we have moved in, it’s great because they are still here. If we find any small problems – like a leaking tap – we can just call and they will come and fix it immediately. You feel secure, because you know they will take care of you and be responsible for their work after it is finished. “Overall, we had a really good experience with Ton Company. We would definitely recommend them to others. It’s like a team job: there is a real exchange of ideas. They have really excellent advice to offer, but they also listen to your input. In the end, we have something we could never have done by ourselves, but it is still very much our house.”
aan Norbert and Isolde has an unusual L-shaped design, with separated sleeping and living areas, linked by a covered outdoor room, which is the focal point of the house. Protected from the elements and fully integrated into the main building, this multi-purpose space offers year-round outdoor living. Two bedrooms are located in one wing, with an open plan kitchen and living room in the other. Bathrooms are ensuite, with one also being accessible from the communal outdoor area. At the rear of the property is a Thai kitchen, and to the front a sloping garden, which will eventually house a pool. The house is oriented to take advantage of cooling natural breezes, with much of the house in shadow during the hot afternoon, while the garden gets the benefit of the sun. The clever design features extra high ceilings and large picture windows to the front, to give a sense of space and allow air to circulate. Isolde particularly likes how the ventilation grills make the house look at night: “The light is filtered through, it looks so pretty,” she says. The architects integrated built-in kitchen and bathroom units, as well as walk-in closet spaces, into the plan, minimizing the need for additional furniture. And the house is built on the slope, offering extra privacy, as well as an aesthetically pleasing lower entrance level. In one sense, Baan Norbert and Isolde is a very simple 2 bedroom, 2 bathrooms home, but it really highlights what can be achieved in a relatively small space with thoughtful and innovative design.

Rattan Furniture
It’s really amazing the way humans employ technology to turn objects from nature into different shapes and forms. Rattan furniture is one such example. Rattan furniture is actually made from cane. Cane, as you may know, is one of the toughest materials in the whole wide world. You can’t really just go into the wild, harvest some cane and transform it into another different thing with some kind of technology.
H
owever, nothing can stop human beings from adapting to the environment. Rattan cane is readily available in many Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia or Philippines. They are harvested, and then treated with a special process so that it’s soft enough to work with. First, the cane is heated up at extremely high temperatures. When exposed to heat for some time, the cane starts to soften. Cane is then put through special machines to be cut into smaller pieces so that they are easier to work with. Furniture frames made from wood, plastic or steel are prepared. Once the cane has been processed, it is then weaved around the furniture frame: a piece of brand new furniture has been born. Today, the most commonly seen weaving method used in furniture is with caning, perhaps because weaving canes is the quickest method: the pattern is simple, with canes overlapping one another at right angles. As you can see, cane becomes a very versatile material when treated; hence it can be used to make a wide variety of furniture. The personal taste of homeowners has been constantly evolving, and furniture manufacturers have had to respond quickly to continue catering to the ever-changing needs of the market. You can find all sorts of rattan furniture - L-shaped sofa sets, coffee tables with modern designs, bar seats, comfortable armchairs, and more!

Rattan furniture can be used indoors or outdoors (under cover). It creates a natural relaxing ambient. That’s why rattan furniture is commonly used in holiday resorts and hotels: they get people to relax! You can achieve the same effect in your very own home when you place use furniture in your house. You can place them in places where people are supposed to relax. Some examples are study rooms, personal reading corners or poolside. Some rattan furniture has cushions on them. When cleaning rattan furniture, simply remove the cushions and wipe the furniture frame with a slightly wet cloth. Allow it to air for a couple of hours before replacing the cushions. If the furniture is caught in the rain, dry it immediately with a dry cloth once the rain stops. Thanks to its cheap pricing, beautiful designs and durability, rattan furniture is becoming one of the most popular choices among homeowners... Join the club!

his month Krabi Magazine has approached MD Houseware showroom and analyzed what is on offer there. As kitchens are one of their strong points, we have asked them to discuss their kitchens for our readers. Here below, MD Sales Manager and designer Stefano Gonella leads the conversation on the topic.
Stefano: “Let’s start by saying that all our kitchens are designed tailor-made; the planning is made to coincide the customer’s taste with the technical competence of the designer. Each kitchen can be personalized in every minimal aesthetic detail, maintaining however a high qualitative standard. “All our kitchens are fitted on sets of 10 to 15cm high feet that are adjustable in height, in order to better to adapt to all ground surfaces. These are covered by a PVC plint covered with aluminum. The plint mounts a gasket that seals the floor from the base of the kitchen, preventing water infiltrations, and therefore mildew and bad odors.

Building a Dream Home Story by : Norm Flach
Part 2: Early Days
I
n the beginning there was land, lawyer, architect, and contractor. We had decided on the location of our dream home – a hillside on the east side of Koh Lanta Yai, which would later be called Sunrise Creek. Next we had to work with the architect to develop blue prints for building. Our architect was very accommodating; he worked with Lory, who had a vision for this house from the outset. Of course the vision grew and morphed as she and the architect worked together, and I watched on with delight. With our lawyer, Kuhn Thani, we worked out a schedule for making payments and the paperwork for legally leasing the land. Foreigners cannot actually own land in Thailand, but it is fairly easy to lease for 30 years extendable or to form a Thai Company that owns the land. The former arrangement is called leasehold and the latter, freehold.
Construction began by clearing the land and leveling the slope of the hillside to make construction possible. We have the middle property of three, with our friends the Ansells high above us, and a lovely Italian couple below us. They completed construction on their home quite quickly, even before our foundation was poured. Our construction really began in January 2010, when Thomas took on a new business partner, Roberto Spezzani, an architect who moved to Ao Nang from Thomas’ hometown of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Since he has been on the project, some exciting things have happened. The first thing Roberto did was to build a fortified retaining wall behind our house to ensure that Ansell’s home would not come down on top of us. This was very important since construction on the Ansell property was nearing completion. Roberto’s construction crew, headed up by the foreman Kuhn Lum, finished the retaining wall in February 2010. In Thailand, construction is mostly concrete and cinder brick. Being from Canada we are accustomed to wood framing for everything but the concrete foundation. Our house in Thailand has brick exterior walls, concrete pillars and steel beams to support the roof. When we visited our building site in March 2010, the men were laying the steel beams of the roof supported by the concrete pillars. The traditional Thai style roof of concrete tiles, complete with femocement facing was completed before we returned to Koh Lanta in June.

One of the challenging aspects of our construction has been the 60-foot lap pool. We are very conscious of the importance of exercise in a healthy lifestyle, and the lap pool is an essential part of the vision for our retirement. Because of the slope of the hillside, the pool was to be sitting high in the air, supported by concrete pillars. I know what you are thinking, “How can that work?” I had the same reaction, but we have been assured that the weight of pool, filled with water, can indeed be supported above ground. Our first guest room is on the same level as our home, at the end of the lap pool. Our first architectural plan had not anticipated the degree of the slope. Therefore, we ended up with a chasm of space below the deck, the pool, and the guest room. Together with Roberto and Thomas we have problem solved, and we believe strengthened the original design. We have decided to use the space under the front part of our house as a garage, and the area under the deck and lap pool as a full guest suite. In our original plan we had a guest room on the same level as our home, at the end of the lap pool. That remains in the new plans. Isn’t this fun! Actually, it is. We have had a ball since January, working with Thomas and Roberto. To be continued… This article is provided to you by Exotiq Real Estate Brokers.
