Charlotte Tilbury, make-up artist to the glossy posse, last week launched her #MakeupYourDestiny hashtag, and instead of getting a soaking, the idea is to spread some self-belief by sharing the advice you would give your younger self. “I believe everyone is capable of getting the very best from their life, and has the right to create their own destiny,” she explains. “They just need the confidence and selfempowerment to get there.” 20

Charlotte – who describes herself as a make-up artist, mother, and mascara and high heel addict – should know. The daughter of a painter who grew up in the Balearics has transformed herself from “the little red head girl in Ibiza” into one of the most in-demand creatives of the moment, with a glittering celebrity client list including her fashion BFF Kate Moss, Jennifer Lopez, Penélope Cruz, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cara Delevingne, plus a NOW IT’S YOUR TURN… 1. And what it did for me was it changed people’s perceptions of me.” With one sweep of a mascara wand came the realisation that, “The world is a different place, actually. I couldn’t believe how much my life changed through make-up.” Long before she became a Fashion Week fixture backstage at the Tom Ford, DSquared² and Donna Karan runway shows, Charlotte knew make-up would become her secret weapon, and she vowed, “I’m going to run with it, I’m going to use it, and I’m going to change my life with it. That moment when I discovered make-up at the age of 13, I realised you can change your life very quickly.”

ALISON TAY, GRAZIA EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, SAYS: Charlotte preps first looks backstage at Joseph A/W ‘14

Playing with that premise to inspire her celebrity friends such as Laura Bailey, Minnie Driver and Millie Mackintosh, and real women across Instagram, was the catalyst for #MakeupYourDestiny. “I believe that anyone can have whatever they want in this life. Your destiny you can change at any time that you want. I don’t believe that people can’t change. Make-up is just one of the many tools in one’s armoury that one can use empower yourself to change, and your destiny is today. People who find themselves in ruts don’t think they can change. You can change your life in a second.” So now, instead of incessant Ice Bucket Insta-vids flooding our feeds, we have super-cute celebrity baby photos and insightful life lessons from the famous and fabulous. Thanks Charlotte!

“My message to my Mini-Me is trust yourself. When I look

at this little girl, with an early predilection for top to toe prints and peplums, who has clearly been working on the same pose for some time now, it doesn’t look like much has changed since – ahem – the ’70s when Daddy took this snap. Who knew that she would grow up to be a super-fashionista? Pretty much everyone, apart from her. I’d say to trust your instincts, your decisions, the process, and believe in your path, even when it doesn’t look as if it’s making any sense yet. It will. Trust me. Learn the rules – all of them – and know them

better than everyone else, because that’s the only way you’ll know which ones to respect and which ones to rip up. Appreciate your parents. When your childhood seems to stretch endlessly, it won’t occur to you they won’t always be with you, and there’ll be questions you’ll never get to ask, lessons you wish you’d learned,

and conversations you’ll regret you never had. And there’ll come a time when you’ll realise you weren’t so different from each other after all. And I’d tell her that one day, she’ll be the Editor-in-Chief of Grazia, so keep practising those poses, and matching prints will still be ontrend in 2014, so get that wardrobe ready.” 21

IT’S THE MOMENT WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR, SPECULATING OVER AND WISHING TO BE A PART OF, AND IT HAPPENED WITHOUT US EVEN KNOWING. The original Mr and Mrs Smith, Brad Pitt and partner of ten years, Angelina Jolie, have finally tied the knot at their Chateau Miravel home in the South of France. Gone was the usual celebrity guest list that reads like a bank of Academy Awards nominees, and in its place was a decidedly intimate array of nearest and dearest. Featuring 22 attendees in total, mostly made up of Brad’s family, including his mother and father, Bill and Jane, brother Doug and sister Julie, who brought her children – thanks to discreet planning and well thought out timing, the press were none the wiser of the events unfolding in Europe. Angelina was walked down the aisle by Pax, 10 and Maddox, 13, while Zahara, nine, and Vivienne, six, threw petals. Shiloh, eight, and Knox, also six, acted as ring bearers. The ceremony was so secret, that even Angelina’s father, Jon Voight, wasn’t aware that it had happened until after the fact. Speaking to E! news, he said, “It sounds like it was a wonderful wedding. It must have been very beautiful with the kids participating. I know it was during Emmys’ Week and they were able to do it very quietly. I’m very happy for them.” Other well-

wishers to offer the newlyweds their blessing included one of Brad’s best friends, George Clooney, who is due to walk down the aisle himself this month too. Not that he seemed too bothered by being potentially upstaged by his pal. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, George exclaimed, “How great is that?!! I’m really happy for Brad and Angie and their whole family.” And it was a sentiment mirrored by Hollywood icons such as Mia Farrow, who tweeted: “Congratulations Angie & Brad!!!” Details of the event itself are still being kept pretty tightly under wraps, but what we do know is that it was of the utmost importance to Angelina that it took place in France, her late mother Marcheline Bertrand’s mother country. It is at this very spot, after all, in 2012 that Brad proposed to Angelina, and it is also thought that Angelina walked down the aisle at the 35-bedroom mansion wearing a locket that had belonged to Marcheline, complete with a photograph of her within it. The dress itself is more of a mystery, though sources claim it to have been “very traditional, but very Angie. It was comfortable but plain, white floor-length antique lace and silk.” If it wasn’t vintage, top bets are on it having been by one of Angelina’s go-to names, such as Versace, Valentino or the British couture duo, Ralph & Russo. The wedding bands were said to have been made by, Robert Procop, the same designer who created Ange’s stunning, Dhs1.8million emerald-cut diamond engagement ring. He is also thought to have attended the wedding. Brad’s is a simple, gold band, and could be seen for the first time last Thursday, as he made a promotional appearance in Dorset for his upcoming WWII film, Fury. Despite appearances, it is said to be worth Dhs36,700. There is method to the apparent madness of such an impromptu union, and that is that this August was the ten-year anniversary of the filming of Mr and Mrs Smith. Where, of course, the lovers first met. Back then, Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston, though both he and Angelina have always vehemently denied any allegations of cheating. This was the third marriage for Angelina, who was previously betrothed to first Johnny Lee Miller, followed by Billy Bob Thornton. Following the low-key ceremony, which was toasted to with a rosé grape of their own vineyards making, the couple apparently enjoyed a few days of uninterrupted European bliss, before returning to their respective work commitments. With the family due to move onto a luxury yacht in Malta for the next few months, while Brad and Angelina film their upcoming movie project, By The Sea, we’re sure they’ll have a whole lifetime to celebrate.

IF RUMOURS ARE TO BE BELIEVED, ONE OF THE MOST SURPRISING COUPLES TO EMERGE THIS SUMMER, Jennifer Lawrence, 24, and Chris Martin, 37, are set to take their love on the road this autumn. The Academy Award winner, and the multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter are apparently taking their romance to the next level and planning on spending some quality time together, on a tour bus, as he promotes new album Ghost Stories across North America. Jennifer, who previously dated Nicholas Hoult, 24, is particularly smitten with Chris’s remarkable musical ability, as you would expect. “He writes her songs and loves taking her to private romantic spots,” claimed a source close to the star. “Chris is sweeping Jen off her feet. That’s his thing.” Indeed, the low-key pair were seen in public last month, at the Wölffer

Estate Vineyard, a super high-end spot in the Hamptons, just a few days before the actress’s birthday. “Nobody realised who they were,” a friend stated. “The setting was super romantic. They watched the sun go down together, then quietly left.” Since meeting just over two months ago in London, at the after party for Coldplay’s monumental Albert Hall gig on 1 July, the pair have been growing steadily closer. “Jen was blown away at his London show. His music is absolutely part of the attraction,” a source told Us Weekly, before adding: “The better she gets to know him, the more she likes him.” It seems Chris has his moves down, and is sticking to them. Gwyneth was reportedly equally taken by his strong on-stage presence, and heartfelt dedication of lyrics. This hot, new coupling seems to have the words Magic written all over it.

3 Beyoncé and Jay Z put on a show of togetherness at the VMAs with Blue Ivy

I DON’T THINK YOU’RE READY FOR THIS REUNION – picking up the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for excellence in music artistry, which was presented to her by husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy in the process – her father Mathew Knowles similarly lit the airwaves on fire with some sensational claims of his own on a local Texan radio station. Rubbishing rumours of a rift between Beyoncé and Jay Z, and playing down the infamous showdown in the lift with Solange, Mathew suggested on The Roula And Ryan Show on 104.1 KRBE that it may all have been a ruse to create hype around their On The Run tour. “All I know is the Jedi mind trick. Everyone’s talking about it. Ticket sales went up. Solange’s album sales went up 200 per cent. I know because we’ve done this. From experience, there’s a tour going on,” he added. Bey and Jay have been touring their respective albums Beyoncé and Magna Carta Holy Grail to live audiences fusing both their fanbases, which finally comes to an end in Paris on 12 and 13 September at the Stade de France. Beyoncé may have sacked her father as her manager in 2011, but he claims the pair remain close. “We still talk every Sunday. She’s still the humble, generous person that she’s always been.” Mathew also hinted heavily at Destiny’s Child dropping new material next year. “Folks don’t know it, but I am still the manager of Destiny’s Child,” he said. “When you see Destiny’s Child on TV and 28

then

now

Destiny’s Child was formed in 1990 with founder members Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland. Michelle Williams later replaced LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett

you see them doing songs together slowly, slowly – now they’ve done two, they were recently on TV – I don’t know, it might be another Destiny’s Child album coming.” With floor-fillers such as Independent Women, Survivor and Soldier as greatest hits, we can’t wait for all the girl power anthems they have planned for us. And if that wasn’t exciting enough, Mathew teases us some more. “There might be this tour that makes history, Destiny’s

Child featuring Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle. Can you imagine what that would be like?” Yes. And the Grazia girls are getting our coordinating camouflage outfits together, practising our dance moves and awaiting our invitations as we speak! But before any reunion tour, the world will have to wait for the birth of another Destiny’s Child, since Kelly Rowland, 33, is expecting a baby boy with husband Tim Witherspoon later this year.

Arguably one of the foremost style icons, this little piece of Mattel magic has been causing a style stir in the bedrooms of young girls – and those old enough to know better – for quite some time now. Well, 55 years to be exact. For decades she has been outfitted with the finest mini marvels that toy stores had to offer, from itsy bitsy bikinis – which were a nightmare to put on and remove – to gold foil prom dresses, fit for Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion. But now, Barbie, just like 90% of other females around the world, is feeling the pressure of a savvy new social world, and has embraced the hashtag by joining Instagram. @BarbieStyle offers a comprehensive breakdown of the blonde bombshell’s favourite daily looks, as well as the ever popular “what’s in my bag?” shots and candid lifestyle photography. She is fast becoming our new daily inspiration. And it’s not just visual. Captions are a key part of the sharing package, as all of us seasoned Grazia girls know all too well, and it is not something that has escaped the star’s attention. “LA street style, there’s no better place to be snapped than out in front of The Ivy,” she quipped in one post. Another paid homage to her long-suffering boyfriend, enlisted to capture her at all the right angles for the sake of her list of followers, admitting, “Is this considered a selfie? Ok fine, Ken took it!” The leggy lady has also let us in on her sartorial plans for the next few weeks, and we have to say, we’re jealous. Barbie, who to date has enjoyed over 75 careers – from pilot to vet – is now focussing on her fashion endeavours. “Thrilled to be heading to New York, London, Milan and Paris this September for all four fashion weeks!” her latest post states. “Starting to prep my travel essentials.” Watch out ADR, there’s a new FROW star in town.

On 29 September, His Purpleness will be dropping a solo album, Art Official Age, and another with his new band 3rdEyeGirl named Plectrumelectrum. His first release since the album 20Ten five years ago, Art Official Age is a soul and R’n’B Prince funk-a-thon, featuring tracks including Clouds, Breakdown, U Know, and This Could Be Us. It also reprises the 2013 digital download Breakfast Can Wait which featured cover art of US comedian Dave Chapelle dressed as Prince from the Purple Rain period, serving pancakes to The Revolution from a 2004 sketch on Chapelle’s Show. Google it. It’s hillair. Meanwhile, 3rdEyeGirl is made up of Donna Grantis on guitar, Hannah Ford Welton on drums, Ida Nielsen on bass, and multi-instrumentalist Prince himself. They describe Plectrumelectrum as a “guitar rock throwdown,” and Prince told Rolling Stone magazine, “No one can play like this band. People are going to try, but they won’t be able to.” Prince and 3rdEyeGirl debuted tracks from Plectrumelectrum in a New York club in February of this year, and sprung a handful of surprise gigs on unsuspecting Londoners in the same month, but if you missed out, more live dates are about to be confirmed. These albums also mark Prince’s return to the Warner Bros. Records, two decades after scrawling “slave” on his face and changing his name to symbol after falling out with the label. “When you stop a man from dreaming, he becomes a slave. That’s where I was. I don’t own Prince’s music. If you don’t own your masters, your master owns you,” he told Rolling Stone at the time. Awkward. Breakfast may have to wait, but we won’t have to. Prince fans will get the first listen to Clouds and Breakdown upon pre-ordering Art Official Age.

When H&M staged their first catwalk show last year in Paris, presenting a collection that spotlit the design talent of their in house team, it became an instant success. – think in terms of Margiela’s anonymous Maison, except H&M’s head of house is still very much present – began life last year as a collection inspired by off-duty model style. A similar aesthetic is embraced for this second offering – well, if it ain’t broke – which offers OTM velvet jumpsuits, slinky metallic dresses and Wangesque sporty crop tops. Grazia caught up with H&M’s head of design, Ann-Sofie Johansson, to get the lowdown... Hi Ann! So tell us a bit about your design background?

Well, I studied both fashion and art after graduation: cutting and pattern-making at Malmö 36

University, and fashion and advertising at Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm. My dream was always to work with fashion though, so I started out as a sales assistant in an H&M store because I thought this was the best way to get to know the company. You’ve come a long way! What are you responsible for now, at H&M?

I look after H&M’s special projects such as Conscious Exclusive, All For Children and H&M Studio. I also act as a sounding board when it comes to the rest of H&M’s collections. The new A/W’14 Studio collection looks incredible! What was your starting point for the design?

We start by gathering a lot of information and inspiration to decide which trends will be right for our customers, then the actual sketching begins, and development of the products. As a designer you need to be really curious, interested and open minded – to have big ears and eyes because everything can impact on fashion! It’s busy – there are around 230 designers at H&M today from almost all over the world. What are some of your favourite new season trends?

I very much like the tomboy look,

with blazers and wide trousers. This season, we really see black coming back big in the fashion picture again. How does the price point compare to mainline H&M ranges?

Fashion and design isn’t a price issue. H&M Studio A/W’14 collection is in the same price range as our Trend collections, so prices start from Dhs99 for tops and dresses, all the way up to Dhs1,299 for the suede coat. Your top three favourite pieces?

• The off-white A-line jacket. Wear with wide trousers for a wide-onwide silhouette that feels new and exciting. • The velvet boiler suit. Go casual with sneakers or more dressed up with heels and belted to accentuate the waist. • The knee boots. Wear with anything for an instant kick! What do you enjoy the most about your job?

There are so many great parts but I would say that the privilege to work with so many talented and creative people is really a strong force of inspiration. Are you a social media pro?

I’m not on social media myself but of course I follow different sites and blogs, as they are great sources of inspiration. The Sartorialist, for example, has been a good companion for many years now.

Stand out designer for A/W’14? ON THE RUNWAY

Big name models, including Joan Smalls, Izabel Goulart and Mariacarla Boscono showcase the A/W’14 H&M Studio collection in the capital’s Grand Palais

For the flower prints that have been presented this season, I’d have to say Dries Van Noten. Are you surprised at all by the rise in popularity of Scandinavian designers and the “minimalist” aesthetic?

I think we have a way of keeping it simple that appeals to many people. Do you have a style icon?

Well, for the Studio collection, we looked to the ’90s, and a young Kate Moss, but we also referenced Charlotte Gainsbourg and her tomboy look. Where is home and what do you love about it?

I live in a part of Stockholm called Södermalm; it’s a bit more bohemian with great bars and restaurants, vintage stores and small independent designer stores. How do you relax?

Spend time with family and friends or just have what we in Sweden call “fika” – coffee and cookies. What’s the best piece of advice that H&M’s creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch, has given you?

Keep it simple, strive for constant improvement and believe in the people around you. 37

Introducing Elektra and Miranda Kilbey, the super-stylish twin sisters behind the band Say Lou Lou, and stars of Gucci’s new Pre-Fall fashion film

for their retro styling and dream-like duets. And it looks like Frida Giannini agrees with us. Elektra and Miranda Kilbey can be seen taking Gucci Pre-Fall 2014 for a spin in a new short film, directed by Joshua Stocker. A flawless fit for Gucci’s Pre-Fall mod moment, Elektra – the blonde one – and Miranda – the dark-haired one – catwalk their way through the short in a succession of ’60s shifts, super-luxe leather, geo prints, classic horsebit leather loafers, and pussy bow perfection, with their latest single Everything We Touch as the soundtrack. Although Say Lou Lou grew up in Sweden and Australia, east London – where this stylistically jump cut film was shot – is very much their stomping ground. “All our friends live here, we live here, and most people we work with have studios here. There’s always stuff going on – culture, music, art – it feels like London’s youth culture is here,” they explain. The driving beat of this track is in perfect step with this crisp and concise collection of precisely tailored sleek silhouettes and solid lines with a clean masculine undertone. A lesson in luxury layering, shirt collars are closed, styled under cashmere and angora knits and punctuated with double-breasted coats. For Say Lou Lou, their styling is just as intrinsic as their sound. “It’s important that you feel comfortable but also that you are adding another dimension to the style of your music, that they go together and that what you are wearing complements your music. It’s like costume in a film, you add to the character and the story through what you are wearing.” And on their striking, same but different, look, Elektra says blondes have more fun, and Miranda says brunettes. “It’s a matter of perspective,” they muse. Can’t wait for your next fix of Say Lou Lou? Nope, neither can we. Their long awaited debut album, Lucid Dreaming drops in 2015. “The record is our first, and has been a work in progress since the band started out in 2012. We have tried to keep the mood of the first tracks we released, Maybe You, Julian and Fool Of Me, but still tried to expand and try new things, especially when it comes to rhythm and pace. We have tried to combine the ethereal, spacious side of our music with a more disco like vibe, also trying to get as much life history and untold stories in!”

Accompanied by the rapper Riff Raff, who features on her current hit This Is How We Do, the 29-year-old enlisted the help of Donatella Versace to created their fashion flashback to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s double denim look at the American Music Awards back in 2001. “I must admit my outfit is a result of my love for nostalgia,” Katy confessed. And her sense of humour too, by the looks of it. While Britney and then-boyfriend Justin’s matching outfits were widely filed under fashion disaster for most, Ms Perry remained unrepentant, joking “We’re going for the best worst dressed today.” Even Britney herself – whose middle name is actually Jean – appeared astonished this look had a red carpet revival. “Just when I thought the denim dress had retired, you bring it back!” and added, “You looked amazing tonight bb.” At least Katy walked away with the VMA for Best Female for Dark Horse featuring Juicy J, beating Beyoncé’s Partition, Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX’s Clueless inspired take-off Fancy, Royals by Lorde, and Problem by Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea. Despite mixed reactions from the fashion critics, Katy – who takes this to

the next level with the cover art for This Is How We Do by being pictured with a coordinating canerow hairstyle to Riff Raff’s – tweeted, “Shout out to Donatella and Versace for making us feel like the owners of Illuminati!” And for dressing her and Riff Raff like them too, we would imagine. And to her haters, she retorts, “It’s called FASHUN.” If you say so, Katy.

FIFI GELDOF, 31, HAS FINALLY BROKEN HER SILENCE ON THE DEATH OF HER MOTHER, PAULA, AND SISTER, PEACHES. In her first ever interview, the eldest daughter of Bob Geldof, has opened up on her long-term battle with clinical depression, after being inspired to shed some light on the still taboo illness that most recently claimed the actor and comedian, Robin Williams. Despite growing up somewhat in the public eye, the PR professional has always shunned the spotlight, instead opting to try and lead as normal day-to-day existence as possible. Her life, however, has been far from smooth sailing. Having lost her mother to subsance abuse in 2000, Fifi explained that she acted out as any normal teenager would, and experienced something of a “lost 42

year.” Experimenting with harmful behaviour to escape her demons, she said if it wasn’t for her boyfriend at the time, she would likely not be around today. The shock passing of her younger sister, Peaches, 25, in April of this year, added further tragedy to her already tumultuous story. “Peaches’ death is like a piece of me that has been taken. A piece of my heart and my soul has gone. She was my baby sister. She will always be my baby sister,” stated Fifi. Asked whether Peaches overdose made her depressed, she strongly disagreed. “It’s nothing to do with Peaches... I think that’s a natural reaction to losing a family member.” Instead, it was the recent death of Williams, 63, that finally prompted her to speak out about the cruel disease that has plagued her since childhood.

“It’s confusing and it makes you feel quite lost within yourself. It wasn’t a slow and gentle descent into depression. Something totally switches in your mind. I’m still trying to work out what’s wrong with me now,” she explained. “Depression is nothing to be ashamed of, it affects an awful amount of people and yet there is still this ugly, shaming, misunderstood stigma around it. With depression you can have everything in the world and nothing. It affects people of all walks of life... Speak out to whoever you feel able to,” she says. “Don’t keep it in, don’t ignore it; it doesn’t help.” If you, or someone close to you, would like to talk to someone in confidence, visit www.dubaicommunityhealthcentre.org to find a mental health professional

THE POWER OF GAGA

Multi-platinum-selling Lady Gaga is a true phenomenon, and as she jets into the Middle East for her eagerly-awaited artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball next week, she opens up exclusively to Grazia’s Carrie Buckle about art, fashion and her first time in Dubai

EXCLUSIVE OWNING THE STAGE IN A BEJEWELLED BODYSUIT, WITH HER ADORING AUDIENCE REFLECTED IN A JEFF KOONS BLUE GAZING BALL ON HER CHEST, Lady

Gaga is utterly fearless. This is the opening outfit in her artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball global tour and the shiny sphere captures Gaga’s incredible connection with her little monsters, who are also sporting crazy, colourful get-ups. The megastar has continually pushed boundaries, with her outlandish performances and outfits often dividing critics. But what is unique about the 28-year-old is her ability to empower her fans, often through fashion. She encourages them to be original, take creative risks, and practice tolerance and acceptance. Whatever you think of her on- and offstage antics, there’s no denying the power of Gaga. In just six years, Stefani Germanotta has bravely built her very own Gaga empire, complete with record-breaking album sales – 27 million at the last count – five Grammy Awards and 43 million Twitter followers. Last year was tough as she split with her longtime manager, Troy Carter, and there was a hip injury, but following quality time with actor beau Taylor Kinney, 33, and super-cute French bulldog Asia, she has bounced back, stronger than ever. And just when we thought we’d seen it all, she surprises us with another incarnation. The most recent is her collaboration with singing legend, and new bestie, Tony Bennett. Their jazz album, Cheek To Cheek, is released on 19 September. “I’m so excited for Cheek To Cheek, I haven’t felt like this in ages. I daydream of the theatres, Tony B, the band. The curtain revealing,” says Gaga, who will star with 88-year-old Tony in H&M’s holiday campaign. Additionally, there appears to be no stopping Gaga, who is also set to release her second signature fragrance, Eau de Gaga this autumn. When we catch up with her, she is enjoying a rare moment of calm in-between gigs in Melbourne, on the Australian leg of her artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball tour. “I’ve been so overwhelmed by the amazing fans waiting outside the hotel everyday,” she enthuses of her #AussieMonsterAngels. The seven-month tour in 68 countries began in the States in May and has since taken in Canada, Japan, Korea and now Australia. She has, however, missed boyfriend-of-three-years,Taylor Kinney. “Sleepy girl, resting up before Brisbane. In the car with my pillow. Missing T,” she captioned a selfie on Instagram, however, she says she is beyond excited about kicking off the next leg of the tour on 10 September in Dubai. She promises her fans “the show of a lifetime” and what makes it all the more major is that it’s her first visit to the region. “I have not been before and I am so excited to see my fans in the Middle East,” she tells Grazia. “I know I’m going to love performing for them and seeing all the beautiful, mythical things come true that I have heard of this enigma called Dubai.” Lady G even got the regional lowdown from her friend Karl Lagerfeld, who fell in love with our city years ago, and famously brought his Chanel Cruise

She told him, “Of course, I must explore the local designers and go shopping!” Did King Karl divulge any tips for hunting down stylish offerings in Dubai? “I would tell you our shopping secrets, but then I wouldn’t be able to get to the nut before the other squirrels!” laughs Gaga, who spends most of her life jet-setting but keeps an apartment in NYC, complete with a white Marilyn piano, pink couch, and her treasured Mikimoto pearls. We’ll have to wait and see what Gaga wears off-stage during her Arabian adventure, but on stage we can be sure she will pull out all the sartorial stops. From a clam shell bikini and a winged bodysuit, to latex and sequinsa-plenty, fans can expect an extravagant spectacle. Gaga will perform 24 songs including the hits Born This Way, G.U.Y, and Bad Romance. What was her f 45

original vision for the tour? “We were inspired by Op Art, especially those by Professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka,” she reveals. “We then became inspired by underground raver street culture, and the works of Marina Abramovic, Robert Wilson and Jeff Koons. This turned into a psychedelic party that we coined the artRAVE.” The concept of the show is Gaga as Greek goddess Aphrodite, taking the audience to planet Venus, where we can celebrate the creativity inside us all. The dancer’s outfits at the start of the show tap into this theme. “These were inspired by rave culture as imagined on the planet Venus,” Gaga says. “It’s a celebration of [Aphrodite’s] birth place and I’m essentially being born as I rise up like a phoenix. If you look closely, we’re all wearing epic swimwear inspired by Matthew Barney.” When quizzed about her fave looks from the tour, Gaga loves her “Versace Gypsy” outfit, designed by her pal Donatella. “This makes me feel like a gypsy bride except I am not wedding a man or a woman – I am 46

The duo were first introduced by Miuccia Prada at New York’s Met Ball in 2010 and they fused art and pop when he created a sculpture of Gaga for the cover of her third album, ARTPOP. “Jeff Koons represents the ultimate dream – to be inspired by your homeland and create work that grows to be the most valuable contemporary art in the world,” Gaga says. Since then, the friends have forged a close bond, both artistically and personally. “He has so much joy and support for everything I want my fans to experience through ARTPOP,” she says. “He talked to me about how he would gaze into his work for long periods of time, which is something that I felt very comforted by because I have always thought of my own gazing as

I like to open the show with the gazing ball to centre the audience into the gravity of the message as they gaze into my heart.” For Gaga, fashion is all about creative freedom, both for herself and her fans. “Fashion is one of my art forms,” she tells us. “It naturally empowers me every single day. When I made ARTPOP, I wanted my fans to see how your own art can empower you to your fullest.” When Karl Lagerfeld recently asked her in a Harper’s Bazaar interview if she had a different look planned for every city of her tour, she responded: “I don’t have my looks planned, but it’s a nice compliment to suggest so... I bring lots of vintage pieces with me – jewels, hats, bags – and I’m also very fortunate to get sent beautiful couture and runway looks all over the world. I just wear what makes me feel good for the day. Right now I’m enjoying feeling like a lady.” It turns out Gaga has a vast fashion archive in LA, boasting everything from stage costumes and couture

gems, to rare collectables worn by stars of yesteryear. Gaga even has her own personal website where she can see everything. The tour pieces are the most cherished as she believes that clothes carry the soul of the designer and person who wears them, so those worn on stage collect the energy and joy of her fans around the world. Will all of her outfits from the artRAVE tour find a home in this sartorial heaven? “Of course! My tour clothes are my most prized possessions,” she declares. At just 28, it’s hard to believe that Gaga has done so much trailblazing, constantly defying her critics. When asked what artwork would sum up her life, she replies cryptically: “My own artwork best describes me, but it is unfinished. There really is no art piece to sum up my whole life because my life is nature, and nature is more beautiful than art.” And how about if she could paint a picture of her future? How would it look? “Like the one I am already painting,” smiles the artist currently known as Lady Gaga. 47

GOODBYE G E N E R AT I O N A ANXIETY

70

BEAUTY With anxiety at an all-time high and our online lives rapidly taking over our real ones, it’s no wonder we’re looking to technology to help us get to grips with our busy existences. Here, Nicole Mowbray reports on the latest digital self-help destinations

So-called “Millenials” (those born between the early ’80s and early 2000s) don’t need anyone to tell them they have a lot on their plate.

From financial pressure, relationship issues and career catastrophes to the stresses of living in a 24/7, 365-days-a-year digital age, it’s no wonder they’ve earned the dubious honour of being called “the anxious generation”. The number of 15- and 16-year-olds who say they feel anxious or depressed has more than doubled in the past 30 years. The World Health Organisation warns that depression is a “ticking time bomb” and could be the second biggest cause of illness by 2020. It’s not going to get any easier for the next generation, either; an investigation by the Mirror newspaper this year found that thousands of under-10s were being treated for anxiety. To top it all off, 50 per cent of people suffering a mental-health issue don’t go to the doctor for fear of the stigma attached to talking about emotional distress. Quite frankly, it sounds like a lot to be worried about. Last month, it was reported that Facebook had conducted a secret emotional experiment, showing some people only positive postings and others only negative. They claim they were manipulating what was shown to see if it affected the way people reacted and interacted with the site, but there’s been understandable outcry about this “emotional surveillance”. Yet this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the pressures of our “social” lives. While many would struggle at the thought of coping without

social media, it comes with a few drawbacks. Firstly, it makes it easier than ever before for us to compare ourselves with others – and not always in a positive way. The whole YOLO (you only live once) thing – travelling, drinking, shopping, partying and dating like there is literally no tomorrow – is great if you’ve got huge amounts of cash and look hot but, for the rest of us mere mortals, being exposed to this on an hourly basis can be somewhat dispiriting. While social media may, justifiably, take the blame for many modern worries, it’s good to know that maybe it can provide the answers, too. Generation Anxiety may have its own set of unique problems, but it has also come up with solutions to the lifestyle conundrum. Welcome to self-help rebooted; therapy version 2.0.

T H E V I RT U A L THERAPIST • www.prettypaddedroom.com and www.thinkwell.co.uk

Fear your boss would be less than sympathetic to your request for time off to see your therapist? Fret no more. The future of counselling may mean you can get help without leaving your living room, as online sessions grow in popularity. It’s now possible to undergo therapy over Skype or FaceTime, at an hour that suits you. This means if your preferred professional is in another town, or even country, you can still book in to see them. The US website prettypaddedroom.com not only helps you find an online therapist, but enables you to

keep a two-way digital diary, where your therapist can also leave their thoughts about your musings. Neat or what? Trial sessions are Dhs91. Prefer something on the other side of the pond? Try thinkwell.co.uk, an offshoot of psychologyonline.co.uk, which has been providing online cognitive behavioural therapy to both private and NHS patients for over 10 years. There is no waiting list on Thinkwell but, unlike Psychologyonline, it is a private service.

THE EASY WAY TO GET HELP • www.welldoing.org

So you want to find a therapist. Where do you start? If you were to log on to Google and type in “counselling and therapy in the United Arab Emirates”, it can bring up thousands and thousands of suggestions within a 100km radius of your home. It’s precisely this kind of information overload that led ex-glossy magazine editor Louise Chunn to start welldoing.org, an online magazine about health and happiness that also helps people find a therapist. “Five years ago, I went online, put in my postcode and THE CALMING HEADBAND Pre-order the “Muse” – a brain-sensing headband that helps you to learn how to relax your mind, de-stress and take control of anxiety by detecting changes in your brain’s electrical field. See www.choosemuse.com

found hundreds of therapists and counsellors. I had no idea how to tell the difference between them or who would work for me. I really didn’t know where to begin. Like many people looking to speak to a professional, I was in a bit of a state, and the memory of this difficult process stayed with me. Many people don’t want to ask friends for advice about therapists. Not only do they find it uncomfortable to admit they need to see one, they also possibly don’t want to share the same therapist. I wanted to make the business of finding a professional easier.” And that’s what she’s done. Simply fill in a questionnaire that asks about your needs, attitudes and location. This narrows down the list of people who may be suitable for you, and everything is confidential. “Sometimes people just need a human being to talk to, someone who is not their friend, not their family or their partner,” says Louise. “I don’t think we can expect everything to come out of a book.”

THE PLACE TO SHARE YOUR SECRETS • www.bigwhitewall.com

Want to tell someone, anyone, what you’re feeling in a secret yet supportive environment? Then bigwhitewall.com is for you. Users of this members-only forum are commonly suffering from anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, bereavement or addiction, and are encouraged to tell others what’s on their mind – through words, photographs or drawings. Each post is stored as an anonymous “brick” in the virtual big white wall. Users say that simply the act of sharing what’s on their mind is therapy, but if you want more interaction, bigwhitewall.com also offers live counselling and guided online group therapies. f 71

THE WEBSITE T H AT R E M I N D S YOU SHARING IS CARING “The internet has huge power,” says Liz Fraser, founder of new self-help website Headcase, “but it is one of the sharpest doubleedged swords out there. While it can be a force for good – sharing feelings, emotions and experiences – there’s no doubt it can cause people to feel undue pressure.” Headcase is informative in a light-hearted way, but where it excels is in guest blogs written by people who have had their own issues with mental health. Liz says giving people a voice is important to her because, having suffered crippling panic attacks and an anxiety disorder, she knows how it feels to crave support. “Visiting the websites of mental-health charities made me scared of what I was feeling. Suddenly, it all seemed like fairly heavy stuff. No one wants to feel they have ‘serious’ issues. Headcase is a place where you can learn about what’s going on with you and know you’re not alone. For example, we tell you what is in the bounds of ‘normal’. We show you that it’s OK to feel sad sometimes, but it’s not OK to feel sad every day. “We live in a world where people share a lot of things, but mental health is still a taboo. We talk about our physical health, relationships, everything down to getting a bikini wax, yet our head wobbles – as I like to call them – have been something that traditionally we don’t share.” Until now. Get a daytime fix of stress management with podcasts, diaries and vlogs. 72

THE MOODTRACKING APP www.moodscope.com

The idea behind Moodscope is that it will help you to identify the triggers that cause you to feel anxious, depressed or down, so you can learn to avoid them. This app is effectively a quick and easy-to-use version of an online diary. With cards,

users rate their mood that day. Those cards are then shared – anonymously via automatic email – with someone you have nominated to “buddy” you – be that a friend, parent, partner, colleague or therapist. Your results are stored cumulatively so, at the end of the week, you (and your buddy) can see a graph

of your emotions. Moodscope believes entering your feelings on to a website improves mood by using a psychological principle called the Hawthorne Effect, which basically says we are happier when we believe we are being observed and “someone cares”.

THIS WEEK VIRGO August 23 – September 23 This week is building up to a Full Moon in your relationship zone. Be sensitive to those around you, especially in your working or romantic life. Men in particular may be a source of irritation now but your ruler Mercury helps you to be extra diplomatic and choose your words with care. Venus moves into your sign too, so love is the answer to just about everything now.

For more astrology readings, visit www.orlilysen.com

LIBRA September 24 – October 23 Your health is under the Full Moon’s spotlight this week. While you’re great at thinking things through elsewhere, your well-being often goes adrift according to your mood, as health and emotion are extremely closely linked for you. Start upgrading your nutrition, fitness and beauty regimes, and within weeks you’ll see everything else fall into place.

This week’s Full Moon calls a halt to wallowing in confusion or self pity and helps you pull your socks up and get back in the game. This time is also about finding your tribe. Look around you for people who “get” you and will help you get where you want to be.

The Full Moon may bring up some memories now, some of which may be painful, but it’s an ideal time to let go of anything holding you back. With Mercury in your health zone, clearing out clutter at home, and freeing your mind of emotional junk too will do you good. You’ll be more sure of your financial prospects too so look ahead, not back.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 21

TAURUS April 21 – May 21

A situation at home may have you reaching for a life belt to keep you out of deep water this week. It looks like you’ve had to focus on work and take your eye off the ball when it comes to home, romance and pleasure. Something had to give. Overwhelming as it may seem, consider it a wake-up call, and nothing that can’t be solved by seriously finding a balance.

Close working or romantic relationships improve now. Friendships may be another matter, as a Full Moon could bring things to a head with someone who may not be all they seem. Neptune hints at illusion or deception, so look below the surface. Check that you’re not deluding yourself about your aims too, as it’s time to get on track with ambitions.

CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20

GEMINI May 22 – June 21

Once something’s been said it can rarely be taken back, so take care what you reveal now. The Full Moon brings kneejerk reactions in situations you’d normally stop and think about before saying too much. Home may be the issue, or big ideas may not go down well at work. It’s temporary, but better to say nothing rather than rock the boat.

If you’re tired of being everyone’s go-to girl at work, now’s the time to put your foot down. Your chatty, knowledgeable approach often attracts those who rely on you to advise them what to do, get things sorted or offer a sympathetic ear. That’s fine, but you need to set boundaries so that your time and talents aren’t used and abused.

AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19

CANCER June 22 – July 22

If your finances have been spinning out of control, this is the week to plug that gap you’re money’s been flowing through. A Full Moon brings things to a head, so decide what you want and filter your cash flow accordingly. Jupiter may be the cause, making you do crazy things for love, so let “less is more” be your mantra now.

Grand schemes and big ideas may seem overwhelming as the watery Full Moon turns them into impossible dreams. They’re not, you just have to start small and work at them. Mars makes you creative and industrious, and Venus gives you a yearning to learn, so combine these two to achieve what you want. Starting from home gives plans cosmic blessings..

PISCES February 20 – March 20

LEO July 23 – August 22

That confused feeling you may have is thanks to the Full Moon in your sign. It’s not the best time to make decisions as clear thinking is not your strength now, and romantically you may be coming on too strong, but destiny seems to want you to be that way! Old friends may resurface now, just make sure you really want to be in touch.

Although you often come across as assured and confident, especially now with Jupiter in your sign, deep down you can be easily hurt especially when it comes to love, intimacy and money, all areas where you can sometimes be over generous. This week’s Full Moon helps you get a handle on this to stop your confidence and your cash from ebbing away.
