The New ‘Shared Economy’ and What It Might Mean For Your Business
The economy is changing and to some, that’s not a good thing. While employment numbers seem to be on the rise (depending on which perspective you believe), other aspects of it are becoming less and less recognizable. People are working more in the world of contract jobs than ever before. Your parents 95 job that lasted 43 years and ended with the perfect retirement “off into the sunset” is no longer the same reality. That doesn’t mean it does not happen, it just means it is much less likely to happen. Millennials , as I will begrudgingly call them, have learned to make money wherever they can. Even people with fulltime jobs also work other contract positions outside of their job in order to make ends meet. A lot of this is due to inflation, higher rent and food costs and overall higher expenditures. Just to sit and have a beer can be a $10 experience after you tip your favorite bartender; life is really expensive anymore. Enter the “shared economy.” The term is applied to people who make use of shared work apps. These apps, such as Uber, Lyft and TaskRabbit , allow people with specific skills to utilize those skills working the hours they choose. The apps allow people to easily sign up and get to work. I
think we all know how the apps work, but maybe we don’t recognize how these apps have changed our world. If you are a small business, these shared economy apps can save you tons of cash on an annual basis. If you send your employees to conventions, tradeshows or business meetings, using Uber or Lyft can more than cut in half your ride expenditures. Over the course of a year, a 50% reduction in one single cost can sure be huge for a company’s bottom line. But it isn’t just travel that’s turning heads, it is also basic task. Taskrabbit, for example, allows you to find someone who will come to you and perform various “handy” tasks, such as putting together furniture, fixing a leaky faucet or handing pictures. The tasks you can find on the app and others like it are endless. A small business could make use of these apps and save a lot of money . But what about that market? Yes, as a small business, you have to ask yourself if you should be in it. Think about it, you could create your own shared economy application and get it approved on IOS and make tons of money, right? Well, not so fast. You’d need an idea that hasn’t been done yet. And after that, you always have to worry about new regulations which might put a damper on your business. Uber and Lyft have fought vast regional government legislations against them. They’ve been fined over and over. Union bosses hate these apps. In the end, everyone is likely to have to accept them as our society is changing to expect them as a way to get things accomplished. But the roads are still a bit rocky.
