50 great disasters that shook the world
ar t ka r a o k e
This small selection of prints were produced in 2000, and started life as a video project of the same name, that involved artists submitting sound and video images that were then mixed together to produce a fifty minute ‘moving painting’. having been further enhanced by digital technology, they redefined the original material, resulting in these sumptuous abstract conclusions.

A series of prints honouring the lives of innocent victims who lost their lives as a result of disasters created by either human error or design.

Having always been attracted to the everyday and mundane, these digital paintings have employed all the techniques of the traditional craft to create visual celebrations of commonplace, functional objects. Acknowledging their inherent beauty, these images draw their inspiration from French illustrations of the 1950s.

Like with all projects, certain rules are set at the start, designed to give the series an identity, but also to define the territory within which ideas can be explored. In Typographic Alphabet, each letter had to be a different font, colours were limited to black, white and a single muted colour, and these were to be accompanied by a line of text that made a personal association with the chosen letter.

l i tt le t he a t re s o f t he a bs urd Drawing on the aesthetics of Richard Hamiltons seminal ‘What is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?’ and the absurdity of the photomontages of Dadaists, such as Raoul Hausmann, the idea behind this project was to place the silhouette of a person against the background of a 1950s interior (and occasional exterior) appropriated from American magazine advertisements of that period, and juxtapose these with a caption that made references to whatever activity they were engaged in. Essentially a visual ‘gag’, these little theatres were designed to create a plausible, yet absurd, narrative full of obscure reference and daft stupidity. With the exception of Janice, George, Sandra and Alan, all characters are real people, friends and family, who posed for the artwork.
ho ma g e t o h oma g e to c a t a lo nia Triggered by the ‘illegal’ referendum held last year in Catalonia, that I experienced when visiting the region, I decided it was about time that I read George Orwell’s classic account of the Spanish Civil War. Along with subsequent research, I became aware that there was a lot more to Catalonia than packaged holidays, football and drunken ‘stag’ weekends. Inspired by Paul Casal’s address to the United Nations in 1971, where he talked about the inherent democracy of Catalan culture, I decided to produce a book (of 300 images) that would explore the essence of this culture through three defined strands, photography, typographic poetry (that referred directly to the narrative of Orwell) and a series of digital prints that were a visual response to my whole experience of this nation of passion, community and understated revolution. A selection of these images are included in this catalogue
betw e e n t r ut h & lie s It has always been my practice to work across a range of disciplines, this was partly due to the culture at Leeds Polytechnic where I studied Fine Art in the seventies, but more importantly because I want to fully explore ideas through the experience of different processes. Between Truth and Lies, was an album that I recorded with Mark Creswell, that explored a range of themes through a variety of musical genres. Each song was attributed to a different band name, and in order to further develop the narrative of the songs, I also produced a book and this series of illustrations, each adopting a different style to keep a consistency with the overall concept of the album. I also wrote a short story based on ‘Dallas : set them free’ which can be found in the book of the album at : http://issuu.com/tonybaker21/docs/between_truth___lies_the_book_by_to

Tony Baker is an artist based in Leeds, who works across a wide range of creative disciplines encompassing everything from Rock‘n’Roll to digital print, involving such diversities as video, photography, curation, illustration, creative writing, typography, poster design and book design. Embracing digital technologies with the spirit of a traditional printmaker, and helping himself to a carrier bag of Punk sensibilities along the way, his work is as diverse as it is eclectic. This catalogue presents a sample of his recent proliferations in print and poster art, largely created over the last year
