Message from the Managing Director

ian reyno PHILIPPINE edition executive EDITOR

Dear Kapamilya,

Tinna S. Bonifacio PHILIPPINE edition senior ASSOCIATE EDITOR

This year, we have so many things to be thankful for. For the past month specifically, we have several reasons to celebrate.

Richard M. Arroyo International edition Art Director Alfred Bonifacio Amado Philippine Edition Art Director

First of all, we thank you for the overwhelming support for the TFC.tv Hong Kong app. To date, thousands now enjoy the much-talked-about “It’s Showtime,” the top-rating “Nathaniel,” reruns of the phenomenal “Forevermore,” the highly acclaimed “All of Me,” and updates plus helpful information from the longestrunning newscast “TV Patrol,” all for free.

We also thank you for continuing to support our programs such as “Pangako Sa `Yo,” “TFC Connect,” and “On The Wings Of Love,” which continue to be the most-loved programs as evident in their trending standing across social media.

Ernesto L. Lopez HEAD, ABS-CBN PUBLISHING, INC. mark j. yambot MANAGING DIRECTOR christina n. lopez content AND EDITORIAL director

Specifically, On The Wings of Love we know is extra close to your hearts because it tells of Leah and Clark, two overseas Filipinos (OFs) who like you also left home to give their families back in the Philippines a better life and then found love in the process. Pangako Sa ‘Yo on the other hand partly tackles, protagonist – antagonist Amor’s struggles overseas.

Connie Naguiat Publisher

We are doubly thankful because we know how it is to remain grateful despite the challenges we face. We are also extra thankful because despite the slew of content fad that suddenly rise, but do not really speak of your journey as OFs such as #PSY, #OTWOL and #TFCConnect, you continue to stay with us. Do know that we at TFC always strive to create programs that are not solely based on entertainment value but also based on what you really want – news and entertainment - and what you really need – the companion of a family or a friend. We also thank you for your loyalty. Throughout the years since TFC launched in Asia Pacific in 1996, you have been there for us like a true Kapamilya. So for all the years you have been and hope to be with us, this issue is our way of saying “thank you” for the years you have stayed with us. Maraming salamat mga Kapamilya,

ALL GROWN UP

It seems like only yesterday when they were little girls playing and giggling on the set of Goin’ Bulilit. Oh, how time flies! Now grown up, they have transformed themselves into smart and beautiful ladies, who still proudly carry with them the discipline and passion for work they’ve learned from the kiddie gag show. As Goin’ Bulilit celebrates its 10th anniversary, StarStudio gathers the show’s alumnae and takes a trip down memory lane with them—in “full grown-up-girl” style By Grace Libero-Cruz • Photography by Rxandy Capinpin

JULIA MONTES, 20

Born Mara Hautea Schnittka on March 19, 1995 to a Filipina mother and a German father, Julia’s childhood proved to be a tough one. Her father left her and her mother when she was only two months old. Since her mom, Gemma, is deaf-mute, it was her grandmother, Flory, who raised her. Given Julia’s standout Fil-German features, it was easy to spot her in a crowd. When she was five, a talent scout told her grandmother to have the little girl try out for VTRs. Julia landed a TV commercial deal with milk brand Nido. From there, she appeared in a couple of TV shows. Her first TV show on ABS-CBN was Hiram, in 2004, wherein she played the young Stephanie Borromeo (later played by Anne Curtis). The following year, Julia, then eight, auditioned for Goin’ Bulilit. On why she auditioned for the kiddie gag show, Julia shares, “Naisip ko lang makakadagdag sa income. Nagulat na lang ako na nakapasok ako kasi nu’ng

4

nag-audition ako, sabi ko, ‘Naku, wala akong joke. Paano ito?’ Tapos makikita mo ’yung iba, sobrang bibo. Sabi ko, ‘Wala na ’to,’ pero nandu’n na rin naman ako so nagtry na ako.” Julia had stints on TV shows like Ligaw na Bulaklak (where she played the adolescent version of Ara Mina’s character), I Love Betty La Fea (where she played the young version of Ruffa Gutierrez’s character) and Gimik 2010. Then came the role that would take Julia’s career notches higher. She auditioned for the role of Clara (the iconic kontrabida role played by Gladys Reyes) for the remake of Mara Clara. She starred in the show opposite her fellow Goin’ Bulilit alum Kathryn Bernardo, who portrayed Mara. In 2012, Julia was paired with Coco Martin in the hit teleserye Walang Hanggan. Last year, she reunited with him via the teleserye Ikaw Lamang. In terms of films, Julia also had her share of remarkable portrayals in movies like Way Back Home (2011), The Reunion (2012), A Moment in Time (2013) and Halik sa Hangin (2015). Recently, Julia returned t o the small screen via the teleserye Doble Kara, a project she’s very thankful for.

SHARLENE SAN PEDRO, 16

Sharlene (who was born on April 5, 1999) started out in the reality-based talent competition Star Circle Kid Quest (SCQ), where she placed first runner-up; she was in that competition with Nash Aguas, Aaron Junatas and CJ Navato who later became part of Goin’ Bulilit as well. Fresh from the competition, she went straight into playing the young counterpart of Judy Ann Santos in Krystala (2004). In 2005, the then five-year-old Sharlene was making big strides, juggling TV shows OK Fine Whatever and Mga Anghel na Walang Langit with Goin’ Bulilit (which earned her nominations for Best Comedy Actress in the 22nd and 23rd PMPC Star Awards for TV)—and fortunately for her, since part of her prize in SCQ was a contract with Star Magic, Sharlene landed roles in Calla Lily, Princess Sarah and Kung Fu Kids. Star Magic guided her as she climbed her way up the showbiz ladder. “Nu’ng bata po ako, natutukan ako ng Star Magic. Pinakita nila na after ng Star Circle, dire-diretso lang,” Sharlene shares. “Siguro ’yung struggle ko po was ’yung pagbalik ko as a teenager, kasi after ko mag-Bulilit, awkward ’yung mukha, ’yung puberty stage.” She was part of Goin’ Bulilit until 2012,until she had the opportunity to join Luv U in 2013, where she transitioned to teenybopper roles. In the afternoon teen comedy series, she was paired with Jairus Aquino. The love team clicked with their fellow teens and won them the Pop Teen Popsies award in the 10th ASAP Pop Viewers’ Choice Awards last year. Apart from Luv U, Sharlene is also part of the fantasy series Nathaniel. Citing Sarah Geronimo, Toni Gonzaga and Judy Ann Santos as the actresses she looks up to, Sharlene also dreams of establishing herself in the same vein, hoping for a role that resembles the one Jennifer Lawrence played in Hunger Games. “Gusto ko ‘yung gano’ng role na action pero pang-girl talaga. Para maiba naman, kasi ang nagagawa namin sa Luv U eh ’yung mga rom-com type.”

NIKKI BAGAPORO, 18

This Goin’ Bulilit alum may be taking things slowly with her career now,but that’s only because she has decided to focus more on her studies; currently, Nikki (who was born on May 23, 1997) is a Multimedia Arts freshman at Asia Pacific College. Still, it doesn’t mean she’s closing her doors to more showbiz opportunities. Of her dream role, she says in jest, “Maging mayaman naman, kasi lagi na lang akong mahirap. Sa Maalaala Mo Kaya, Mga Anghel

na Walang Langit, mahirap lagi ’yung roles (na ginagampanan) ko. Gusto ko naman ’yung medyo mayaman na medyo bitchy.” Nikki was seven years old when she joined the kiddie gag show, which she auditioned for. She recalls the difficult audition process: “Mahaba ang pila. Pero isa po ako sa masuwerteng nakapasok.” At first, Nikki struggled with her lack of experience in acting, especially since she was cast alongside other kids who had prior TV experience. She shares, “Kasi sila, hindi

sila baguhan. Eh ako, kakapasok ko lang, tapos sila nagka-teleserye na, eh ako parang nangangapa pa. Acting at pag-memorize ng lines ‘yung naging struggle ko.” The same year, she became part of Goin’ Bulilit. She also became a cast member of Mga Anghel na Walang Langit. Her other projects include Maria Flordeluna and Mirabella, and the movie Tatang, a short film directed by Nico Hernandez. It was a finalist in the Cinemalaya Film Festival 2009 where it won Audience Choice (Shorts). The film revolves around Tatang Ruding and his granddaughter Ester. Nikki has had her share of acting credentials, but if there’s anything she really dreams of doing someday, it’s to be a singer and have a concert, like her celebrity idols Maja Salvador and Anne Curtis

Gown by: Eliz Bride

Born on August 27, 1998, Mikylla is an alum of Star Circle Quest and was, in fact, among the show’s Top 5 winners. After SCQ, the Goin’ Bulilit gig followed, making her among the first batch of kids on the show. Since she was only five at the time, it took a while before she got used to showbiz. Still, there was no denying their work on the show was fun and didn’t feel like work, so Mikylla came to enjoy that chapter of her life. However, Mikylla had to “graduate” from the show earlier than her fellow bulilits, because she was too tall to, well, pass for one. Usually, kids graduate at 13, but Mikylla was only 10 when she did. “Yun ’yung first-ever graduation kasi, (so) talagang umiyak kaming lahat. Medyo sad, pero masaya din naman, kasi nag-move on kami to another chapter of our lives,” Mikylla shares. Mikylla appeared on Sa Piling Mo as the young counterpart of Judy Ann Santos’ character and on several episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya and Wansapanataym. She was also part of films like Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote; Enteng ng Ina Mo; Si Agimat, si Enteng Kabisote at si Ako and My Illegal Wife. Recently, Mikylla embarked on a new journey as a freshman college student. Although she’s focusing on her studies now, she still hopes to one day work with her idols in the industry, like Judy Ann Santos. StarStudio • HONG KONG VO L 1 N O 9

MIKA DELA CRUZ, 16

The reality-based talent competition Star Circle Quest was the show which launched the career of Mika (who was born on December 9, 1998), who placed first runner-up. She was six during the competition, then she was tapped to be part of the cast of Goin’ Bulilit when she was eight. As the younger sister of actress Angelika dela Cruz, it was tough for Mika to prove she didn’t get into the business because of her ate. She says, “Nahirapan ako kasi sinasabi nila na nakapasok ako dahil kay ate, which is not true kasi I stayed true to myself and I used my own talent. Lagi akong naco-compare kasi may kapatid akong artista.” But Mika didn’t let that get her down. She was determined to stay in showbiz and make a name for herself. Besides the fact that she has appeared in a number of TV shows which showcase her acting potential (Kambal sa Uma as the young counterpart of Shaina Magdayao’s character, Dahil May Isang Ikaw as the young counterpart of Kristine Hermosa’s character, Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin as the young counterpart of Andi Eigenmann and Mirabella), Mika also earned nods for her role in the 2009 Star Cinema film T2. For the said movie, Mika won a Best Supporting Actress award in the Gawad Pasado 2010 and a Best Child Actress trophy at the PMPC Star Awards for Movies 2010. Her dream roles? “Action na may pagka-kontrabida. Gusto ko rin maging mermaid.” In the meantime, fans of Mika can watch for her in the soap opera You’re My Home with Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta. 6

TRINA LEGASPI, 21

Trina—more popularly known by her moniker, Hopia—entered showbiz via the drama series Hiram (where she played the role of the young Diana, who would later be played by Kris Aquino). Trina (who was born June 13, 1994) auditioned for the role, saying, “Naghanap sila ng batang Kris so nag-audition ako. I think mga 200 kaming nag-audition.” Hiram aired in 2004, and Trina was about nine years old then. Before landing a spot in Goin’ Bulilit, she had a stint on the TV show Maid in Heaven alongside Cherry Pie Picache, Manilyn Reynes and Assunta de Rossi. Trina was 10 years old when she joined the first batch of kids on Goin’ Bulilit. Because she was working in an image-centric industry like showbiz, the young Trina developed insecurities at such a young age. “Sobrang conscious ako nu’ng bata kasi ang taba ko. Tapos ang problema, ’yung wardrobe sa Bulilit hindi nagkakakasya sa akin. Tapos ang awkward,” Trina shares. In her senior year of high school, she decided to get serious about losing weight. The idea of attending the senior prom in a gown she would be happy about, and confident in,served as her motivation to stick to working out and staying on a healthy diet. For about two months, she went to the gym almost everyday. All that effort eventually paid off, because she’s now sexier than ever. With her new figure, Trina has become more confident, and that comes with having a better attitude and view of her craft. This Communication Arts student from Miriam College is juggling her studies with working on an indie film for Cinema One Originals and an upcoming Star Cinema movie, Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako.

Born on August 23, 1995, Eliza was only about three years old when she tried out for Magandang Tanghali Bayan’s (MTB) “Munting Miss U” competition. She did not win, but she managed to land a TV commercial gig,and later became a Star Magic talent. Prior to Goin’ Bulilit, Eliza played the role of the young Bernadette (the older character was portrayed by Desiree del Valle) on Bituin, and appeared in a Wansapanataym episode and Sarah the Teen Princess as well as the movie Till There Was You which starred Judy Ann Santos and Piolo Pascual. When she found out there was an audition for a gag show, the then nine-year-old Eliza didn’t hesitate to jump at the chance. “Sobrang fun din ng audition kasi magkaka-age kami. Ilang weeks din siguro bago kami tinawagan na may taping daw for Goin’ Bulilit,” Eliza shares. She only stayed with the show for three years, because she and Kristel Fulgar were slated to do Maria Flordeluna. For Eliza’s mom, it wasn’t easy to break the news to her daughter, who had grown used to being on the Goin’ Bulilit set. She narrates:“Tinanong ko si mama kung hindi ba kami magte-taping for Goin’ Bulilit, tapos sabi niya hindi na,kasi may teleserye daw ako na bida ako. Umiyak ako. ’Yung last taping ko for Goin’ Bulilit, nasa Davao kami. Hindi na din kasi ako naka-graduate kasi kinailangan ko umalis nang biglaan.” She left the kiddie gag show in 2008, and her projects thereafter included Kung Fu Kids, Angelito: Batang Ama, Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto as well as a bunch of Maalaala Mo Kaya and Wansapanataym episodes.

KIRAY CELIS, 18

Goin’ Bulilit would perhaps not have been the same if Kiray Celis didn’t become part of it. What’s a gag show without aninherently funny girl, right? Kiray didn’t have to audition to be part of the show, because prior to that, she was part of the noontime show MTB (Magandang Tanghali Bayan), where she met Direk Bobot Mortiz, who also happens to be the creator of Goin’ Bulilit. She was seven years old when Direk Bobot got her for the show. Since the start of her career was basically different from that of her batch mates on the show, Kiray had a bit of a hard time fitting in. She shares, “Naalala ko pa nu’n,nu’ng first day namin, hindi ko sila kilala lahat. Kasi nga parang dati na akong artista, pero bumalik lang ako, so parang nangangapa pa ako. ’Di ko alam kung paano ako makikipagkaibigan. Wala akong kilala sa kanila, eh. ‘Yung iba, galing na ng Star Circle Quest nu’n, so magkaka-grupo na sila, tapos ako, wala akong kilala sa kanila. Pero pala-kaibigan kasi ako, so naging kabigan ko din sila lahat.” Kiray joined showbiz because she wanted to help her family. “It’s not about the fame,” she quips, adding that “masaya ako sa trabaho ko. Gusto ko ang ginagawa ko. Hindi ko man siya dream nu’ng umpisa, na-enjoy ko din, kasi ang sarap magpangiti at magpatawa ng mga tao.” Though she’s always been boxed into playing someone being bullied because of her physical appearance, Kiray can definitely say she loves her job,and is determined to stay in the industry for as long as she can. And that love is evident in the number of shows and movies she’s been given over the years, including stints on Maalaala Mo Kaya, Mara Clara, Wansapanataym, Growing Up and Luv U as well as roles in movies like Pera o Bayong (Not da TV!), Born to Love You, I Do Bidoo Bidoo: Heto nAPO Sila!, Somebody to Love and Crazy Beautiful You. Kiray is currently working on two films under Viva Films and Regal Films. She’s also become the favorite muse of veteran beauty and fashion stylist Fanny Serrano—and her statement looks are a testament to her uniqueness and panache as an emerging style star.

Angel’s first TV appearance was in a commercial for an instant noodle brand. She was discovered by ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio,and became part of Goin’ Bulilit shortly after. Born on May 4, 2000, Angel was only five years old when she joined the kiddie gag show. Having started that young, Angel points out how it was hard to balance her studies with work. “Regular student kasi ako. Never ako nag-home school, so mahirap magadjust ’pag may taping, and siyempre makakalimutan mo minsan na may assignment ka. Kailangan i-rush, ’yung teachers mo, nagagalit na sa ’yo kasi ’di ka pa nagpapasa,” Angel says of the struggles she had to deal with to strike that work-life balance. “At saka ’yung tulog talaga. Kasi nu’ng super napuyat ako, sobrang na-mess up ’yung sleeping patterns ko.” Even so, Angel pursued her showbiz career with gusto, her passion resulting in numerous projects. She became part of TV shows like Calla Lily, Varga, Hating Kapatid and the film Hide and Seek. Angel may be focused on her studies now (she’s currently a senior high school student at the Philadelphia High School in Talayan Village in Quezon City), but she also expressed her interest to someday play roles in action and rom-com films (“I’m a sucker for romance, I’m a hopeless romantic,” she says). Should an offer come her way while she’s in college, she quips, “I’ll do both kasi college naman is very flexible. I survived naman grade school and high school. So StarStudio • HONG KONG VO L 1 N O 9 definitely, I’ll go for studies and career.”

KRISTEL FULGAR, 18

Gown by: Eric delos Santos

It was on the noontime show Magandang Tanghali Bayan’s “Munting Miss U” contest where Kristel (who was born on December 30, 1994) made her TV debut. The only talent she knew back then was singing, so she wasn’t expecting to go far in the competition, but she did and she even made it all the way to the grand finals. “Pero hindi ako nanalo. Akala ko ’yun na ’yung last, tapos ’yun na ang ending ng career ko,” she shares. Then just when she least expected it, an opportunity presented itself. A talent coordinator invited her to audition for what she thought was a segment on MTB. It turned out to be a role in the soap opera Bituin (2002), which featured Superstar Nora Aunor, Cherie Gil, Desiree del Valle and Carol Banawa, whose character’s young counterpart Kristel portrayed. Of the project, she shares, “Nag-dalawang isip ako kasi wala akong idea kung paano mag-act.” After playing two more ‘young version’ roles—on Marina for Meryll

Soriano’s character and Mulawin for Angel Locsin’s character—Goin’ Bulilit came into the picture. Kristel had been guesting on the show until she decided to audition to become a regular cast member when she was nine years old. She became known for portraying Flor de Luha (a parody of the main character in Maria Flordeluna, a show she was actually a cast member of ) and Ysabellat (a parody of the main character in Ysabella which starred Judy Ann Santos). Kristel also appeared as the young version of Eula Valdez’s character in Mula sa Puso and was part of the supporting cast of Got to Believe and Bagito. But because she started out early in showbiz, it proved to be a challenge to balance her work and studies. “Ayokong mag-give up sa showbiz at ayoko din mag-give up sa pag-aaral, so hanggang maaari, pinagsabay ko,” shares Kristel, who took up Communication Arts at the University of Santo Tomas. Incidentally, she’s also part of the cast of the epic historicalbiographical film Ang Sugo, which is about the life of Iglesia ni Cristo’s first Executive Minister Felix Manalo.

ALEXA ILACAD, 15

Some people are fated to be in showbiz, like Alexa (born on February 26, 2001), who was discovered by a talent agent when she was only two years old. Sabi niya, ‘Okay, sige, why not?’ ’Yung first commercial that I auditioned for, nakuha ako.” Alexa’s next attempt at auditioning wasn’t as easy, but she wanted to join the industry so she convinced her mom to allow her to audition for Goin’ Bulilit. She and her mom had to fall in line with about 3,000 other hopefuls in front of the audience entrance of ABS-CBN. When her turn came, she says, “Di ko alam ang gagawin ko. Hindi naman ako pinag-act or hiningan na magpakita ng any talent. Kinuha lang ’yung name ko. Tapos three months kami naghintay after nu’ng day na ’yun. Wala... walang text, walang tawag. Tapos biglang one day, may nag-text kay mommy, ’yung executive producer ng Goin’ Bulilit, balik daw kami sa ABS-CBN, titingnan daw kami ni Direk Bobot (Mortiz). Pagdating namin dito sa ABS, sampu nalang kami.” She was eight years old when she officially became part of Goin’ Bulilit in 2008. Alexa also had her share of TV exposure in programs like May Bukas Pa, Maalaala Mo Kaya, Nasaan Ka Elisa?, Luv U and Wansapanataym; she also portrayed the young counterparts of Bea Alonzo’s character in A Beautiful Affair and Jessy Mendiola’s character in Maria Mercedes. After a string of minor roles, Alexa hit it big when she starred in the teen drama series Bagito, where she was paired with her current love team and fellow Goin’ Bulilit Nash Aguas. At her young age, Alexa is vocal about how she survived the awkward phase that is growing up. “Naging struggle din ’yung weight ko. Chubby talaga ako, siyempre hindi daw maganda sa TV, ’yung mga damit hindi maganda tingnan,” she shares. As one of clothing brand BUM’s endorsers, Alexa is seemingly embracing and loving her figure more and more, and is becoming more confident about it. 8

MILES OCAMPO, 18

Before joining the cast of Goin’ Bulilit, Miles (born on May 1, 1997) had been a talent for commercials and TV shows. Her first modeling stint was for a hotdog commercial, which got her noticed and eventually picked for a role in the afternoon soap Mangarap Ka (2004) starring Piolo Pascual and Angelica Panganiban. That same year, she played the role of young Sandara Park when the Korean pop star’s life story was featured in Maalaala Mo Kaya. The following year, Miles appeared in another Maalaala Mo Kaya episode, and landed spots in Goin’ Bulilit and the TV series Mga Anghel na Walang Langit. She already had a “name” when she auditioned for the show, but Miles remembers actually being afraid she wouldn’t make it because there were so many other hopefuls. She was seven years old when she became part of the show and was among the show’s first batch of Bulilits. Unlike some kids whose parents force them to join showbiz, it was Miles who convinced her parents to allow her to enter the industry. “Ako talaga ’yung gustong mag-artista. Pinilit ko ’yung mommy at daddy ko na payagan akong mag-audition para sa mga commercials,” she shares. Fortunately, she got that break on Goin’ Bulilit, and remained part of the show until she was about 12 years old. The training Miles got from the show helped her hone her skills even further. Miles has turned out to be a versatile artist who can easily switch from comedy to drama, which continues to be her edge up to this day. While she loves doing comedy roles, she also dreams of landing more challenging dramatic roles. “Gusto kong maging pipi (mute) sa isang show, kasi ’di ba ang challenging nu’n kasi hindi ka magsasalita, emotions lang (ang ipapakita mo).” Miles is currently part of the comedy series Home Sweetie Home with John Lloyd Cruz and Toni Gonzaga, and the teen comedy series Luv U. She’s also working on a soap opera with Julia Barretto.

ELLA CRUZ, 19

“Nag-start ako as extra, as talent, nu’ng seven years old ako, tapos kung anu-anong audition ang sinalihan ko,” says Ella (who was born on August 17, 1996). Her first noteworthy stint in showbiz was when she played the young counterpart of Angel Locsin’s character in the GMA-7 show Majika (2006). The following year, she was included as part of the main cast of the tele-fantasya Super Twins with Jennylyn Mercado and Nadine Samonte, and tapped for the role of young MariMar (later portrayed by Marian Rivera) in the remake of the Mexican telenovela. Then she moved to ABS-CBN and became part of Goin’ Bulilit in 2008. By that time, she was around 11 years old. “Actually, seven years old pa lang ako, nag-au-audition na ako sa Goin’ Bulilit. Lagi akong pumipila sa audience entrance, kaso nasa 200-plus ako. Lagi akong sumasali, kaya lang hindi ako nakukuha,”

Ella says. Trying to penetrate the industry successfully was definitely the most challenging part of her career—“’yung nare-reject ka, matagal kang naghihintay tapos sasabihin sa’yo,tatawagan ka na lang, pero wala ka naman makukuhang tawag, ’yung talagang proseso ng pagpunta sa kung saan-saan. ’Yung time and patience.” She persevered, and though she was initially part of the other network, there was no denying Ella had the talent which the heads of Goin’ Bulilit eventually noticed. Since she was already 11 years old when she joined the show (kids usually “graduate” from the show at 13 years old), she only got to stay on it for about a year and a half. Her showbiz calendar filled up with taping sessions for Maalaala Mo Kaya and some shows on other networks until she landed her first leading role via the TV series Aryana which ran from May 7, 2012 to January 25, 2013. Aside from Aryana, Bagito was also one of her remarkable projects, where she figured in a love triangle with Nash Aguas and Alexa Ilacad. These days, Ella is busy with several showbiz commitments. She shares, “Meron akong ginagawang show under TV5, Parangnormal Activity every Saturday. Meron din akong ginagawang two movies under Regal Films—’yung isa ’yung Prenupwith Jennylyn Mercado and Sam Milby (which is set to be released soon). ’Yung isang movie is Hawa with Khalil Ramos naman.” Ella also dabbles in hosting for the game show Kapamilya Deal or No Deal and the early morning program Umagang Kay Ganda. When she turned 18, Ella also embraced and unleashed the dancing diva in her. In fact, she even made a video of herself doing the “Twerk it Like Miley” moves and the video has earned over five million views on Facebook and YouTube combined. She followed this up with her performance of Korean star Hyuna’s “Red,” which, two days after it was uploaded on Ella’s YouTube channel, already had nearly 1.5 million views.

JANE OINEZA, 19

As young as four years old, Jane (who was born on July 22, 1996) was already doing TV commercials, and those got her noticed by Star Magic. “I’m a Star Magic baby,” she exclaims. At five years old, she appeared in the teleserye Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan (which starred Claudine Barretto and Carlos Agassi), followed later by stints as the young counterparts of the characters of Kristine Hermosa on Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas (2003) and Claudine Barretto in Marina (2004). When Goin’ Bulilit was launched in 2005, Jane was included in its first batch; she was nine at the time. As one of the first cast members, she also had to audition for the show. She recalls, “Marami kami sa audition hanggang sa naging pakonti na nang pakonti.” Jane proved she was no flash in the showbiz pan. Aside from Goin’ Bulilit, she also became part of Bida si Mister, Bida si Misis, Prinsesa ng Banyera and Kung Fu Kids. She graduated from Goin’ Bulilit in 2008. “Dapat 13 years old pa ako gra-graduate kaso mukha na daw akong mature, hindi na daw bulilit. Inaasar nga ako na ‘Uy, gra-graduate na ’yan’ hanggang sa nagkatotoo nga na ’di pa ako 13, nag-graduate na ako.” After that, Jane appeared in one Maalaala Mo Kaya episode after another, including the “Manika” episode which earned her a Finalist Certificate for Best Performance by an Actress at the prestigious New York Festivals, a nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Single Drama at the Golden Screen Awards, and a Best Drama nomination at the International Emmy Awards in 2013. That same year, she was relaunched as a Star Magic talent as part of its batch 2013 alongside Liza Soberano, Julia Barretto, Janella Salvador, Ingrid dela Paz and Michelle Vito. Last year, Jane entered Big Brother’s house for Pinoy Big Brother: All In, a stint which boosted her popularity and brought her closer to her fans. Among her current projects are the teleserye Nasaan Ka Nang Kailangan Kita, the Star Cinema movie The Love Affair (with Bea Alonzo, Dawn Zulueta and Richard Gomez), and she’s taping for the upcoming Star Cinema movie Blood Crayons. She’s also one of the hosts on ASAP Chillout. With her achievements early on and the diversity of her projects, what does she hope to do next? “Mini action or rom-com naman para lang maiba du’n sa mga nagawa ko na, kasi I really want to expand din and try a lot of things so I can improve.” Gown by: Jojo Urquico

KATHRYN BERNARDO, 19

The youngest in a brood of four, Kathryn Chandria Bernardo was born on March 26, 1996 to parents who are entrepreneurs. Kathryn may have been a bibo kid but she never really wanted to be an actress. “Ang gusto ni Kathryn, maging commercial model ng shampoo,” her mom Min told StarStudio in June 2011, in which Kathryn also points out, “Ang gusto ko lang po, eh mag-model, o mag-flight attendant.” Kathryn’s first TV project was Krystala, where she played the role of Ryan Agoncillo’s sister. It was followed by roles as the young Cielo San Carlos (portrayed by Bea Alonzo) on It Might Be You and young Carina dela Cerna (played by Maricel Soriano) on Vietnam Rose. In 2005, Kathryn joined Goin’ Bulilit. But her kiddieteenybopper image would change when she was cast as Anna, who would grow up to be Victoria Valera (Gretchen Barret to) on Magkaribal in 2010. It was different for Kathryn because her character had to work as a prostitute to earn money. The role helped her transition to a more mature actress. Then Kathryn snagged the role of Mara (originally played by

Judy Ann Santos) in the 2010 Mara Clara remake, which also starred Julia Montes as Clara. The project allowed Kathryn to showcase depth in acting, paving the way for more projects she would topbill. It was the project that crowned her this generation’s Teen Queen. This exposure in Mara Clara led to meaty roles in Maalaala Mo Kaya, Wansapanataym, Growing Up and Princess and I (where she was paired with Enrique Gil, Khalil Ramos and her current love team partner, Daniel Padilla). Given their undeniable chemistry onscreen, Kathryn and Daniel later starred in their own teleserye, Got to Believe, which went into a Season 2. That was the start of the KathNiel phenomenon, which spawned more projects like the movies Must Be…Love, She’s Dating the Gangster and Crazy Beautiful You, and their current top-rating TV show Pangako Sa’Yo. In Pangako Sa’Yo, Kathryn plays the role of Yna MacaspacBuenavista (originally portrayed by Kristine Hermosa). Aside from Pangako Sa’Yo, the social media-active Kathryn also recently launched her official website kathrynbernardo.com, which will feature her various interests and experiences. The website allows a peek into a more personal Kathryn, away from the spotlight. An actress and now a blogger, Kathryn also hasn’t forgotten the importance of finishing her studies. Currently, she’s taking up a marketing course in Enderun Colleges but she also expressed her interest in following up her studies with a culinary course. “Siguro ’pag natapos ko ’yung school ko, gusto kong magkaroon ng sarili kong business,” she says. Even with her success as a young star, Kathryn shows no sign of stopping, and all her fans could do is keep up with her and wait for more exciting, inspiring things up their Teen Queen’s sleeve.

Yeng and Yan (with Remus, one of two that they own) were married in February this year. Now, they are learning what it’s like to live together and be with each other 24/7. The home featured on these pages, they purchased even before they tied the knot, reveals Yeng. “Itong house na ito, kinuha namin ni Yan nu’ng engaged pa kami.” The couple, both songwriters, faced a different kind of creative challenge picking out stuff for their home.

hen you first set eyes on it, the white, four-storey townhouse looks exactly the way you would expect any other home of its kind to look. It’s not painted in garish colors, nor is there anything gaudy or ostentatious about it or its surroundings; only a single white luxury van is parked in the one-car garage, probably the only hint that a celebrity of some kind lives here. The home is owned by rock singer and songwriter Yeng Constantino and her husband, band member Yan Asuncion, who tied the knot on February 15 this year at Hacienda Isabella in Tagaytay. The excitement surrounding their wedding now over, Yeng and Yan seem to have settled down to a quiet and comfortable life in their home, located in a quiet subdivision in Quezon City. It is comfortable and laid back, just like the couple that live in it. There are no babies yet, but the house’s two other occupants, Romulus and Remus, Yeng and Yan’s Scottish Fold cats (so-called because this breed has a mutant gene that causes their ears to fold) are a welcome and happy distraction. Named after the famous twins of Roman mythology, the cats have the run of the place and were bought from Yeng and Yan’s friend, concert producer Francis Bonnevie. As the interview gets underway, Yeng scoops up Romulus and takes her place beside her husband on the coffee-colored couch. “Itong house na ito, kinuha namin ni Yan nu’ng engaged pa kami,” she reveals. Interestingly, their home became a sort of DIY (do it yourself ) project for the couple. Yan, who’s a songwriter and musician, turned out to be quite the handyman, needing only a little help from his uncle to transform the house into the place he and Yeng always dreamed it would be. “Siya pa ang nagkabit ng StarStudio • HONG KONG VO L 1 N O 9

The living room, which Yeng and Yan designed themselves, offers a good view of the street below. The couple’s personal touch is evident in the small details, like paintings, framed photos, and other items they chose themselves. The living room, located on the second floor, is right beside the dining area, so the couple can invite guests to a hearty meal after a round of conversation.

kurtina,” reveals his proud and happy wife. In some cases, that meant traveling out of the country to look for things they needed. One of the places they went to was IKEA Singapore (originating from Scandinavia, IKEA is a world-famous chain of stores selling furniture and houseware), where they bought some accent lights. The finished product made them both extremely happy. “Ang sarap ng feeling na kami ang nagbuo nito,” says Yeng, looking around the living room with a satisfied smile. On a more personalized note, the living room is dotted with framed photographs: some of Yeng, a younger Yan, and small yet interesting decorative touches, like a photo frame shaped like a miniature sedan. Souvenirs from the couple’s many travels line the open shelves.

Where music reigns

And because they’re both musicians, there are nods to their shared passion all over the house, most of it centered in

12

the music studio on the fourth floor. Yeng wanted the studio to have the feel of a typical brick house in San Francisco, her favorite city in the US. So her eager-to-please husband bought bricks from a home depot in Manila, painted them (again with his uncle’s help), and mounted them on the studio’s wall. What draws the eye of visitors is the couple’s merged guitar collection. Three of them are Yeng’s; the other four (including a 10-year-old ukulele) belong to Yan. The studio functions like a home office for them: it is where they spend most of their time discussing and working on music and is where Yeng’s latest musical projects, including songs like “Hindi Na Tayo” (which she wrote for Angeline Quinto), “Sino Ba Ako Sa ‘Yo” (for Erik Santos) and “Paano Ba Ang Magmahal” from the Sarah Geronimo-Piolo Pascual movie The Break-up Playlist—took shape. Here, also, is where Yeng works on her other projects, which include recording demos. She also finished a

commissioned song for a Taiwanese hardware and electronics corporation here, and wrote some of the songs for her latest album All For Love, which husband and wife treated as a joint venture as well. Yeng and Yan collaborated every step of the way. But their roles are very specific. “I’m more of a producer,” Yan reveals. “She (Yeng) writes the songs—the melodies, chords and words. Ako ang naglalagay ng drums.” Yeng confirms this, and says they complement each other perfectly. “May ideas siya na wala ako. ‘Pag pinag-merge namin, sobrang ganda ng labas.”

Serving each other

This work rhythm was born not just of their being musicians, but of learning about each other’s love language. Yan and Yeng are fans of Gary Chapman’s bestseller The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate, which is about the different ways people in relationships show their love for their significant other. “Ang love language ko, words (of affirmation) and (quality) time,” says Yeng. “Hindi ako nagse-serve (as a love language). Alam ng parents ko ‘yan.” Yan’s love language consists of acts of service to Yeng. But when Yan offers to do something for her, Yeng—instead of getting all excited—replies with a simple “okay.” This used to cause friction between them during the first If homes reflect the personalities of the owners, then Yeng and Yan’s new living space is a perfect fit. Like them—the two are both lowkey individuals—the house is done in muted colors. It suits them now, but Yeng bares plans to move after five years, most likely when the children start coming. They’re looking at a smaller house with a big lawn where their future kids can play and run around.

business she and Yan can call their own. “We want to ensure the future of our kids by putting up a business and investing in condos for rent.” Target date for the coffee shop venture is next year. The couple, who already own the Garage 88 resto-bar along Katipunan Road in Quezon City, is just studying two offers for business partnership that came their way.

Family matters

The couple are creative collaborators when it comes to music, although they have very specific roles. Yeng writes the songs, while Yan adds the finishing touches. In this, they complement each other perfectly. “May ideas siya na wala ako. ‘Pag pinag-merge namin, sobrang ganda ng labas,” she notes.

few months of their relationship as sweethearts. Yeng would talk and talk, and get frustrated when Yan didn’t reciprocate with the same deluge of words. Yan, on the other hand, was surprised why his then girlfriend would talk so much, because talking on the phone for two hours was already a big deal to him. But now that they know each other’s love language, Yeng and Yan have learned to ‘speak’ it fluently. Yan has learned to become more expressive. Yeng shares that her husband has started to speak words that are music to her ears. Like he’ll speak up and complement the way she looks, saying, “Love, ang ganda ng suot mo!” The devoted husband also prioritizes quality time with Yeng, because spending time is part of her love language. “Pag may gagawing importante, ang priority ko ay wife ko. Kahit sa parents ko, wife ko pa rin (ang priority). I would reshuffle my life (for her).” Yeng, for her part, learned how to cook (Tinolang Manok and Kare-Kare), make coffee and massage Yan’s stress away to show him how much she treasures him. “Eh hindi pa naman ako marunong magmasahe. Nanginginig ang kamay ko,” Yeng admits. “Minsan, naaawa na ako (sa kanya) so sabi ko, huwag na lang,” Yan reasons.

Cooking too, wasn’t such an easy skill for her to master. “Nu’ng bata ako, hindi ako marunong magsaing. Buti na lang may rice cooker. Pinanood ko sa YouTube kung paano magluto. Ten times ko yon ginawa. Then game!” laughs Yeng. She also makes him coffee. “Puwede naman magtimpla ng kape ang kasama namin sa bahay (the helper). But for some reason, hindi ko gusto ito ipagawa sa kanya. Dapat ako ang gumagawa,” adds Yeng. She thinks that her tender loving care makes the coffee different from the rest.

Investments

Serving her husband is Yeng’s way of speaking Yan’s love language—and now that they’ve adjusted the sails to suit each other’s needs, Yan and Yeng are ready to venture into new, uncharted waters as future parents. They bought a 5,000 square meter beach property in Calauag, Quezon, where they plan to bring their future children to spend summer vacations. “Gusto namin mag-plant ng trees doon. Nagtanong tanong na ako sa mga farmers. Nag-dig na rin kami to plant 52 mahogany trees. Every time bumalik ako do’n, magpa-plant kami ng tree,” says Yan of his plans for the place seven hours away from Manila. Yeng even sees herself taking up fishing as a hobby and putting up a

If the couple meets their target of welcoming babies two years from now, they foresee themselves running stable businesses that will give them time for the children. They talk about being hands-on parents who are guided by Biblical principles in raising their future family. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it,” Yeng quotes the Bible. They even want to home-school the kids in a modest-sized home with a big lawn for them to run around in. The couple plans to give up their current townhouse after five years, maybe rent it out eventually, and move to a place with lots of open space for their future children to romp in and play. “Gusto ko, hindi malaking bahay. Wala namang masama sa malaking bahay. Pero, aanhin mo ito kung hindi naman kayo nagkikita?” Yeng asks, half-jokingly. During this conversation, Yeng beams at her husband, one hand lovingly atop his knee. The picture of wedded bliss is as touching as it is inspiring. Although married only for seven months, Yeng and Yan have learned a lot in that span of time and have plenty of advice to share with other couples. One rule they’ve set for themselves is to never hold back on saying “I love you”. Yes, even in the middle of an argument, says Yeng. “Nangyari na kasi ‘yon (sa amin). Kapag ginawa namin ‘yon, sa gitna ng away, na-remind ako na love ko itong taong ito. Hindi ko siya kaaway. We’re a team.” The intention is to balance each other out, and be partners in their marriage. It’s perhaps no coincidence that their names sound like Yin and Yang, the symbol of completeness despite obvious differences. Yes, Yeng and Yan have found happiness by embracing their differences. This will keep their marriage strong and solid, in good times, and in bad.

FROM RNB TO FNB

He magically transformed himself each week in the first season of ABS-CBN’s Your Face Sounds Familiar—now R&B King Jay R is busy turning himself into a food and beverage star with his latest business venture By Grace c. Diez Photography by Renato Lu

e captivated viewers from all over the country and The Filipino Channel (TFC)-watching audiences with his amazing celebrity transformations, turning himself into Grammy award-winning singersongwriter Stevie Wonder, local rock icon Pepe Smith, rockstar Alice Cooper, country singer Kenny Rogers, 80s rap star MC Hammer and even glam diva Beyonce, in the first season of Your Face Sounds Familiar. Now R & B prince Jay R takes us through yet another amazing transformation as he assumes his latest role: as partner in the Treehouse Tavern and Cafe. Treehouse is a two-storey bar and restaurant located at the A.Venue entertainment hub in Makati City’s busy Kalayaan district. It caters to both Filipinos and foreigners looking for a great place to hang out and dine. JayR partnered with his ‘homies’—an American slang term for good friends— KC Montero, Jimmy Muna and DJ Scratch Mark in putting up the restobar. “Our long-time friend Mark has a bar, so it was good that when he wanted to start a new business, he asked my good friends KC and Jimmy to become his partners,” says Jay R. “Meron din silang radio show on Wave 89.1 called The Wild Side and I also had my own radio show there called The Bloc Party every Sunday. Since the two of them are DJs, maganda nga mag-partner kasi you can promote the business and what’s happening there. Plus, may experience na si KC since he

•SSM_HONGKONG_VOL1NO9- 215mmx280.indd 14

As a business owner, Jay R tries to be as hands-on as he can, and as far as his music career will allow. Being in showbiz definitely helps in terms of the exposure. His partners help too, because they are also musicians, performers and songwriters.

had his own bar. Then nalaman nila na gusto ko mag-partner so nagsama-sama na kami.” The choice of a name was influenced by their passions. “We named it Treehouse because we’re boys, eh,” grins JayR. “We like swords, Star Wars and treehouses. Treehouse is kinda like our big playground, so we adopted it as the name of the bar.” Treehouse is actually not Jay R’s first venture into the food business. Sometime in 2007, he managed a restaurant and bar called Rock Candy. Unfortunately, a section of the mall exploded (this was the unfortunate Glorietta 2 incident) so he was forced to halt operations. When asked what his expectations are for this new venture, he jokingly

quips, “Sana ‘yung hindi naman na sasabog.”

Comfy vibe

Upon entering Treehouse, the earthcolored and wood-inspired interiors evoke a cozy and homey vibe. The restaurant and bar currently has a 250 seating capacity and is ably operating with 32 staff. “What we wanted for Treehouse is something na cozy but not so highend na kailangan mo pang lumabas na you’re all dressed up. We’re in Makati, so the prices are of Makati range but a bit lower, being that our place is where we will let someone in wearing a tank top or tsinelas. We get a lot of foreigners during the day. Puro puti dito. In the evening, there are more Filipinos, especially when there are bands,” Jay R says. The location is pricey—being in Makati—but according to Jay R, it’s worth every peso. “The rent is very expensive pero worth it talaga kasi ang daming foot traffic dito at super daming tao talaga.” The place is always teeming with people. Treehouse, Jay R explains, caters to people who are looking both for tasty comfort food and a place where they can have great fun at the same time. “Gusto namin ‘yung parang dive bar. And then ang concept niya downstairs is Treehouse Café which specializes more on food and dining. Upstairs naman is the Treehouse Tavern, which is like a ‘barcade (bar and arcade).’ There, you can play arcade games like PacMan, Street Fighter, Donkey Kong, may arcade basketball, merong foosball (a tabletop version of football, or soccer), darts and beer pong. It’s more like fun for adults sa taas!” he declares proudly. And with most of the partners involved in music one way or another,

10/22/15 8:25 AM

Treehouse Tavern also features performing artists. “Bands and other performers do their gigs here. Ang daming pwedeng gawin dito na very exciting. This is pretty much a personal playground,” he said. Among the artists who have performed at Treehouse include Kjwan, Urbandub, Save Me Hollywood, Q York, DJ Salbakuta, Jay R’s girlfriend Mica Javier and Jay R himself. Another reason he pursued this business is his passion for food. “I love food—it’s a necessity, we need to eat to live!” Jay R exclaims. Treehouse currently serves a menu of mouth-watering comfort food and dishes that people have come to love including breakfast meals like Triple Pancake with Blueberry Crème, Bistek Tagalog and Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise. Burgers and sandwiches are also big favorites like the Treehouse Burger, Bad Boy Burger and Turkey Sandwich. Pizza and pasta lovers won’t be left out with the restaurant’s Seafood Pizza, Truffle and Basil Pizza, BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza, Suckling Pig Pasta, Bacon Mushroom Truffle Pasta and Meatball Pasta. One can also load up on Treehouse’s main dishes like Buttermilk Fried Chicken with White Gravy Tarragon Sauce, Grilled Steak with Argentinian Chimichurri Sauce and Grilled Prawns in Lemon Brown Butter Sauce. “The bestsellers are burgers and wings but my favorite is the truffle pasta and the breakfast pancakes. They’re comfort food definitely,” Jay R shared. “It’s a bar and resto so we hire the chefs that we like and serve the kind of food that we love. I’m a guy, so I love burgers and wings, and pasta and that’s exacty what we’re serving. Ang mga partners ko mga Amboys din eh kaya yun ang mga dishes namin,” Jay R says. Though Jay R cooks, he has only one specialty.“Yes, I cook! Scrambled eggs! ‘Yun lang,” he laughs.

Boss Man

Treehouse is just one of the things keeping Jay R busy following his transfer to the Kapamilya network. A singer-songwriter, actor, record producer and model, Jay R kickstarted his career in the Philippines in 2003 with his R&B album Gameface. His emotion-filled single “Bakit Pa Ba” placed him in the public’s consciousness and gave him a massive following. The song also received numerous awards

•SSM_HONGKONG_VOL1NO9- 215mmx280.indd 15

and was certified platinum by the PARI (Philippine Association of the Record Industry). During an appearance on Aquino and Abunda Tonight earlier this year, Jay R admitted that R&B wasn’t exactly the route he was advised to take. “At first, nu’ng bagong dating ako dito (from Los Angeles, USA ), a lot of people were saying na R&B isn’t masa, na hindi magwo-work. But you know, from my experience, it worked for me,” he said. “It gave me my own little niche and I just worked with that. Passion ko talaga eh. I love R&B,” he added. Now he is known as the “R&B King.” And he has proved how versatile he is. He also explored modelling, and found himself acting on TV shows like Narito Ang Puso Ko, Dear Friend, Encantadia, Love to Love and Magic Palayok, and has also appeared in movies namely Happy Together, Hari ng Sablay, Exodus: Tales From The Enchanted Kingdom and Desperadas. He was also a regular performer on GMA 7’s Sunday variety shows SOP and Party Pilipinas. Apart from singing and songwriting, he also built a recording studio and established a recording label called Homeworkz Records. Then he moved to ABS-CBN, where he resonated strongly with viewers following his success on Your Face Sounds Familiar and occasional appearances on ASAP. As his career continues to soar, Jay R’s personal life is equally happy. He admits that his girlfriend Mica is the one that pushes him to strive harder. “She actually inspires me a lot,” he says. Her drive and creativity are inspiring. She shows me also on how I should be working. She’s also an artist and she’s finishing her album under my label. She’s also in the perfume industry and has her own line called MNL. She’s a very hard worker,” he gushes, clearly happy with the love of his life. His food ventures, while not exactly related to music, also serve it in a way. “Well, the good thing about this is Treehouse is also a venue where we can perform and do press conferences. We can do shows and charity events. It will still coincide with our music. On the business side of it, we can do meetings with clients,” Jay R explains.

According to Jay R, it really is teamwork when it comes to him and his business partners. “We are all very much involved. We take care of everything and we make decisions together pero my role specifically is marketing. That’s to get people to come here and to persuade suppliers to give us better deals. That’s my card,” he said. With this move, the singer has once again proven that his business acumen isn’t only confined to music. In fact, Treehouse complements his efforts in the music industry.

Winning formula

As he goes on with his newfound adventures in ABS-CBN and in the bar and restaurant business, he takes to heart the lessons learned from his experience in managing Rock Candy. “Definitely when it comes to business, it’s about consistency and following up. When you’re running a business like a restaurant and a bar, a lot of people are involved like suppliers, waitresses and staff. Communication talaga ang importante,” he began. And most of all, Jay R considers his business partnerships important. “Dito, it’s about managing the people very well. Your team is your success when it comes to business. We have to keep a close eye on every single detail. Hindi pwede ‘yung may business ka tapos wala kang ginagawa. You think everything’s running smoothly on its own, but no—you have to keep a close eye on everything and everyone,” he concludes. There are plans to expand in the future, but Jay R and the team remain cautiously optimistic. “We’re looking at Tomas Morato, Commonwealth (both in Quezon City) and Capitol Commons (near the Pasig Kapitolyo area) but we want to make this work first before branching out. But yes, we’re already checking other places out,” he notes. Before long, this latest transformation of Jay R will undoubtedly become another success. It will be another hit to add to his repertoire, and will prove that he’s not just the King of R & B—and that he rules over this new kingdom, too.

It’s important to live a healthy lifestyle and let’s enjoy this day,” Piolo said in his opening remarks, addressing his fellow Star Magic talents.

Xian Lim and Kim Chiu were awarded the Male and Female Sportsmanship Award respectively. “Ang galing kasi di sila nagpapatalo, kami rin di nagpapatalo.” says Xian on their basketball game against Sun Life.

Gerald Anderson shares, “I look forward to the camaraderie and bonding namin. Iba ‘yung atmosphere na hindi kami nasa ASAP or guesting or taping. Everybody’s relaxed, having fun kung anuman iyong sport na ginagawa nila. I play basketball. Ayaw nila akong maglaro sa iba.” The actor was awarded Best Male Athlete at the event.

Star Magic’s Johnny Manahan, or Mr. M to his artists, opened the basketball games with the ceremonial toss.

Among the event’s highlights were the basketball (Junior Division) game won by the Yellow team with Teen King Daniel Padilla leading the charge. Daniel rightfully earned the title of basketball MVP of the junior division. Daniel’s loveteam partner Kathryn Bernardo cheered for the actor, along with her other friends, by recreating the scene from She’s the Dating the Gangster where she danced and cheered “Go sexy! Go sexy sexy love!” Kathryn was also awarded the Most Improved Player (Female) award.

Enchong Dee led the first ever swimming competition in the Star Magic Games. The actor, who was once a part of the Philippine national swimming team, showed off his skills during the competition.

In an episode, the Korean YouTube Channel Korean Star TV shared their thoughts about the looks of Pinoy stars Julia Barretto, Daniel Padilla, Kathryn Bernardo, Marian Rivera and Liza Soberano, based on Korean beauty standards. Most of the Koreans in the video cited Liza as the “prettiest”.

The Trending Cover Girl Just a couple of days after announcing that the cover girl for Metro Magazine’s September issue would be the nation’s new sweetheart Liza Soberano, #MetroLovesLiza became one of the top trending topics on Twitter. Clearly, the fans were crazy excited about the magazine feature on the lovely young star’s pre-showbiz life and her California homecoming in the United States. The Metro cover shoot also served as a platform for an emotional reunion between Liza and her mom Jacqulyn after seven long years of being apart. Sarah Meier, Metro editor-in-chief, counts the reasons for choosing Liza as their cover girl for the big fashion issue. “She’s an undeniably and unanimously wise choice, not only because of her stunning beauty, but because of her story—where she came from, and where she’s heading. She represents what I think every woman can identify with, which is a constant journey toward becoming the best version of yourself possible, and it was a pure pleasure to communicate that in photos, and through fashion,” Sarah explained. Much like during the StarStudio editorial team’s experience during the pictorial, Sarah also got to see the fun-loving side of the beautiful young actress. 20

“She’s a doll. I think my favorite moment with Liza was when we all spontaneously broke into dance walking down the street in Hollywood. There was a mobile DJ set up outside one of the stores playing some Michael Jackson, and I tell you, it turned into an impromptu music video. People were staring, sure, but you could tell there was a sense of freedom being able to act really goofy out in public, and we all had a grand time doing so,” she shared, amused at how the serious-looking Liza could seamlessly switch to a fun-loving, carefree girl. “She’s still a little girl in many ways. Loves to make you laugh, tells animated stories, but also treasures the quiet little moments. It was an honor to catch her unguarded moments with her younger siblings. Beautiful. After doing the interview, I find that she’s one tough cookie, a fast learner, and a good girl,” Sarah added. Beyond her stunning beauty, Liza Soberano’s history and impressive personality certainly make her great copy—make that excellent magazine cover girl choice. – Grace C. Diez

Working to Live What’s that again: all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy? Well, Quen really takes this to heart, especially when he gets the chance to find something to add to his already impressive collection of shoes, caps and lately, works of art There’s no doubt, Quen works hard to support his family. But he also observes, “People kasi, sometimes, they live to work. So nabubuhay lang sila para lang magtrabaho. Tapos magugulat na lang sila na isang araw, parang andami nilang na-miss na happy moments. For me kasi, you work to live, not live to work. Magtrabaho ka para makapag-enjoy ka.” First, he started collecting shoes and then not long after, all sorts of caps. Quen says that his fascination for shoes started when he was already getting projects which allowed him to show off his dance skills. In fact, there was this one transaction that blew his mind. It was for a pair of Supra footwear with 15-karat gold accessories. One of the world’s leading footwear brands especially among the young, Supras were originally skate shoes, are made of leather, and come in high tops and low cut styles. “Nakita ko ‘yung ‘Supra’ na gamit ni Chris Brown sa isang concert. I told myself, ‘I want a pair’. So nag-check ako online, sold out. Nag E-Bay (an online shopping store which facilitates transactions on a bidding basis) ako, may nagbebenta na isang guy—he was selling it for 600 dollars. I bid 600 US dollars and I sent him a message. I told the guy: ‘It’s for my birthday please, pick me’. He sold it to me for 30 dollars. Sobrang bait niya, and it came to me na original lahat. It’s one of only three pairs in the world. So in the future, may option akong ibenta ‘yun,” shared Quen. For Quen, the art of collecting is not an end in itself. He also sees it as a form of investment. So, he looks for pieces that have a high resale value, like works of art. He says his collections are those that appreciate in value in the long run. He also collects art. “The paintings came into the picture kasi nagpapatayo kami ng beach house sa Anilao (a town in Batangas known for being a popular dive site). So I wanted, you know, paintings and stuff. My mom was able to get some paintings through the grandson of Legaspi (Cesar Legaspi, who was born in 1917 and passed away in 1994, became National Artist for Visual Arts—Painting in 1990; the famed painter was the father of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) pioneer Celeste Legaspi who’s known for her novelty songs ‘Tuliro’ and ‘Saranggola ni Pepe),” beams Quen.

Quen (top, with brother Enrique Javier, or Javy, and above, his sister Frances,Javy, and mom Bambi). Family was always very important to him, even when young. After his father passed away, Quen took a bigger role in helping to support his mother and siblings. He remembers that when his father fell ill, he told himself, “Okay, I can’t be a boy. I’m gonna be a man of the house now.” Quen then was all of 16 years old.

QUEN’S PASSIONS, Like any boy his age, Quen loves gadgets and cars and loud music, but there’s also a side of him that’s into more quiet passions, like collecting art, caps and shoes. He brought some of them to the shoot, to share with StarStudio. He has caps of different styles and brands; the pair of shoes belongs to the Nike Air Mag collection and are known also as the Marty McFly shoe. Marty McFly is the character played by Michael J. Fox in the Back to the Future film franchise. It is the first rechargable shoe from Nike and lasts up to five hours per charge. The paintings are just two of the six that Quen brought to the shoot that day. These are works by Filipino masters, including the late Cesar Legaspi. StarStudio • HONG KONG VO L 1 N O 9

isually, they’re a match. Both tall and fair-skinned (he has Spanish genes on his late father’s side of the family, she has American on her mom’s), they complement each other perfectly. Their personalities fit too. Sitting down for a brief chat in between photo layouts (he’s taking a break while she is having her solo photos shot), he tells us how tickled he is by the thought that they have so many things in common. “Suka (vinegar),” he begins. “I hate suka; she’s allergic to suka. Cookies and cream ang favorite flavor ko; siya rin, cookies and cream. ‘Pag pasta, white sauce siya. White sauce din ako. When she was a kid, she used to carry this monkey stuffed toy. She couldn’t sleep without that monkey. Ako rin, when I was a kid, I had a monkey toy. It was a different kind of toy, but it was still a monkey. It’s weird. She’s exactly like me, you know? I didn’t know I could meet somebody na parang ako.” Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano—the Xander and Agnes of Forevermore, Drake and Sophia of Just The Way You Are,and David and Gillian of She’s The One, the first movie they made together as a loveteam, and which launched them as an onscreen tandem—have become something of a showbiz phenomenon. Their latest movie made P12 million on opening day. Their schedule is packed with live appearances, endorsement gigs, taping and shooting (they’re already working on a follow-up film project,

“She’s like a female version of me,” jokes Quen of Liza.

titled Everyday I Love You, with Gerald Anderson) such that it took tremendous effort for us to find a few hours just so this shoot could be squeezed in. Because of all the time they spend together at work---including the months they were holed up in La Presa, Benguet while taping Forevermore—it was natural for them to develop a close friendship that many around them are convinced has bloomed into something more serious. Or if it hasn’t yet, it certainly could.

Finding ‘Forevermore’

e first time the two appeared Th onscreen together was with Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla in Must Be…Love. But their first real time to work together—as in opposite each other— was in the romantic-dramedy She’s The One, a movie topbilled by Dingdong Dantes and Bea Alonzo, in 2013. They played best friends in the movie. One of their most memorable exchanges came toward the end of the film when Liza’s character asked, ‘Best friends’? and Quen’s character responded with ‘Forever.’” Ironically, off-cam, no sparks flew between the two actors. “When we first saw each other, wala talaga,” Quen confirms to StarStudio. “Then when we did She’s The One, sobrang mahiyain and quiet (siya). So I would just say ‘Hi’. I would find her cute na that time, pero nalaman ko (sa mga tao sa paligid) na crush n’ya pala ako. So sabi ko, ‘Ah, okay’. Di niya alam, may crush na rin ako sa kanya, pakonti-konti.’” And yet apparently, Liza had made enough of an impression on him that Quen began asking Star Cinema Managing Director Malou Santos for a chance to be paired with the goodlooking Star Magic Batch 2013 member. At the time, Quen was between projects. He had just finished doing a successful dance concert at the Araneta Coliseum, and was waiting for what his next assignment would be. “I was going to have another show but hindi pa alam kung ano,” said Quen on Kris TV. “And parang during the concert, as in, on the night of the concert, (or) sinabi na the next day, Mirabella ka muna. Sabi ko kay Tita Malou, sige, pero sana sa next one, kami

ni Liza, kasi parang cute siya.” Th en in mid-2014, Quen’s wish was granted. A new show to be called Forevermore was in development. The show’s main romantic draw would be the relationship between Xander Grande III, a rebellious hotel heir, and Agnes Calay, a hardworking strawberry farmer. The series would be shot on location in La Presa, Benguet, a small strawberry farming town on the outskirts of Baguio City. Quen was offered the role as Xander, while Liza would play Agnes. Before Liza and Forevermore, Quen had been paired with other leading ladies— like Lauren Young in Mula sa Puso; with Kathryn Bernardo (in the movie Way Back Home and the teleserye Princess and I, Jane Oineza in the horror-suspense film Amorosa, Julia Barretto in Mirabella and Julia Montes (in Muling Buksan ang Puso). At the time, Liza was just another new star in this long line of female screen partners for Quen. There was some promise based on what people had seen in She’s The One, but because it was Quen and Liza’s first time to really work together, there was not enough of a basis to conclude that yes, this tandem was going to be a ratings winner or would catch the fancy of viewers and fans. In a previous interview, Enrique expressed how nervous both of them were. “At first, we were scared kasi siyempre hindi namin alam ‘yung chemistry namin ni Liza. It was our first time with each other, and for a big show like that, in a big timeslot like that, with the big cast they made, there was pressure na sana naman magustuhan ng tao ito, or sana matanggap ng tao, or sana maging malakas ito.” But Forevermore—whose first episode aired in October 2014—took off like a rocket, surprising everyone, and establishing Liza and Quen as a solid onscreen loveteam. Mico del Rosario of Star Creatives’ Advertising and Promotions unit which produced Forevermore, says there’s definitely something about this hot young tandem that was obvious even before they began working on the show. “Unang nakita pa lang namin si Liza, sabi namin ‘Meron itong batang ito. Sa She’s the One ‘yung una, du’n pa lang talagang meron ka nang mararamdaman about her, na ang ganda-ganda niya. Before ng start ng Forevermore, inupo kasi namin ‘yung dalawa, to manage

expectations and to find out where they are in the scheme of everything that’s happening to them. When Forevermore was starting we didn’t have expectations. We didn’t expect it to be as big as it became. Hindi namin inexpect na umabot sa phenomenal levels.” Honestly, he says, all they were looking for at that time was to launch new love teams. “So when we were meeting them, I was really so surprised and glad actually, na ang talino ng dalawang bata. I was really impressed that at their age, ang dami na nilang insights about their lives, about themselves, and what they were getting into.” What Liza and Quen didn’t realize at the time was that the show would become for them a platform on which to build an offscreen friendship as well. Quen says: “Well, siyempre, it started out with first, being super-friendly. We were really good friends when we started working together in Forevermore.” It worked to their advantage that they were filming so far away from the city. There, isolated in the mountains, more than six hours by land travel from Manila, with no one else except the other members of the cast and crew for company, Enrique and Liza had many chances to get to know each other better. “We got really close, and for me, that was great, because I wanted to be paired with her,” says Quen. “I wasn’t in love yet, because I was thinking then na mas maganda ‘pag nakilala mo ‘yung tao muna.” Liza agrees that being in Baguio helped hasten things a bit. “Feeling ko din, nakatulong ‘yun, ‘yung lock-in sa Baguio kasi kami-kami lang ‘yung magkakasama, so parang we got to know each other even more.” One of the direct witnesses to their developing friendship was their Forevermore director Cathy GarciaMolina. Direk Cathy saw how playful they would behave toward each other on the set. This kind of playfulness could only be achieved by two people who feel comfortable toward each other. “Parang confidant ni Liza si Quen,” says their director. “When Liza had a problem, si Quen ‘yung napagsasabihan niya, siguro kasi mas matanda si Quen sa kanya. I also liked how they were 24

around each other, na nakakapag-joke sila sa isa’t-isa. Nababarubal nila ang isa’t-isa. Comfortable sila sa isa’t-isa, kesa sa nagkaka-ilangan sila; makikita kasi ‘yun sa eksena.” Drawn together by such moments, their working friendship moved ahead. Quen welcomed the opportunity to get to know his leading lady better. In La Presa, without any distractions, he was able to focus on finding out as much about her as he could. They had meaningful conversations during shooting breaks, says Quen. “Doon ko siya nakilala ng sobra, kasi nga kamikami lang, nagkwe-kwento lang ng buhay, gano’n, mga small talk, naging long talk, naging deep na.”

I was happy kasi akala ko biro-biro lang, pero him telling me that I’m the only girl that he said that about in interviews, it made me feel special.” – Liza

Then in December 2014, the first and only Christmas season they would celebrate together, the Forevermore cast and crew decided to play Kris Kringle, or, as it’s alternately known, ‘MonitoMonita’. Everyone picked a code name to conceal their real identity. Liza, whose full name is Hope Elizabeth, chose espoir, which is French for ‘hope’. Quen wrote something that Liza recognized as a dead giveaway the instant she saw it. “I knew it was him, because his code name was ‘Mah nigga’ or something like that,” laughs Liza who by then knew how much Quen loved hip-hop music. “Basta, Enrique na Enrique. So ‘yung code name niya, alam ko nang siya, pero ‘yung akin, di niya alam na ako.” As a gesture of friendship and appreciation for his leading lady, Quen—who was starting to like her more than as a co-star by this time— wanted to give Liza something more than just the usual gag gifts (the

‘Something hairy, something hard’, etc.) for Kris Kringle. “Every day, dapat may ilalagay ka na gift sa box na hindi nakikita ng mga tao. But si Quen, he made ipon the gifts, so sinabay-sabay niya, pinagsamasama niya sa monito-monita ‘yung mga personal gifts niya.” The more they worked together and the more he got to know her, the closer Quen and Liza became.

The big confession

But StarStudio was not too prepared for what Quen was bound to confess next. “(While doing Forevermore), ‘Yun nga, we got close, super-super close, and became good friends, and from then on, parang nakita ko na, pwede siya ah, that it could lead to her being the woman that I could be, maybe, spending the rest of my life with. I could see she could be.” It was about two or three months into the show that they reached another emotional turning point. That came in the form of an overseas phone call. “I was in Australia, tapos I called her up,” shares Quen. “Nakapagbonding na kami sa Forevermore, so after two to three months of that, I had to fly to Australia for a show. Doon ko na-realize, nu’ng nandoon ako, na namimiss ko siya. So I gave her a call.Sabi ko, ‘Uy, you know what, parang nami-miss kita.’ Nahiya siya ng konti, tapos sabi niya, siya din daw, na-miss niya rin ako.” Liza—who received a congratulatory bracelet (for the good performance of Forevermore) from Quen before he left for Australia, and a Michael Kors designer bag as pasalubong when he returned—remembers more of the details of how that conversation went. The call came in at nighttime. Liza was at home, in her room resting, having slept all day. “We were doing Forevermore na then, and we had a break. He (Quen) went to Australia. From taping in Baguio, we went back to Manila. I was super-tired from taping, so I slept all day. As in, tulog talaga. (And then after, I was awake, in my room, I was surfing the net, updating myself with what was going on, then all of a sudden, my phone started ringing. It was Quen calling.” Her first thought was of how expensive the call was going to be because it was coming from overseas.

“(I thought) ‘He’s in Australia, sayang ang load niya! Tataas ang bill niya.’ (Then his voice came on the other line). I said, ‘Hello, bakit di ka na lang tumawag sa Viber or something?’” Quen protested. “’No, no, no, mas maganda dito.’ Baka mawalan pa daw siya ng connection kasi he was in the hotel, pero lalabas siya, and then sabi ko, ‘O, bakit ka tumawag?’ Sabi niya, ‘I’m in my room, I’m by myself, the boys (the other Star Magic artists he was traveling with) are downstairs, they’re waiting for me.’ So I asked again, ‘So bakit ka nga tumawag?’ Sabi niya, ‘Wala, miss ko lang mag-taping. Parang nami-miss din kita.’ Sabi ko, ‘Bolero ka!’”

No joke

But it eventually reached a point where both of them realized that what was happening between them was becoming just a bit, deeper—such that even when the show ended, their friendship kept on going. Quen realized that he enjoyed spending time with Liza even outside of work. Fans latched on to their tandem, and the fan base began to grow. Even without Forevermore, something was definitely developing between them, and even now, almost a year after that first day on the Forevermore set, “You can see it, ‘pag nagsama kami, it’s just really fun and happy. She has all the qualities that I want in a girl.” Eventually, the public and the entertainment press got wind of what was happening—and up to this day, it is easy to believe what you hear about Quen and Liza, because it seems that even they aren’t trying to hide it anymore. Quen, the more vocal of the two, began talking about Liza in interviews, confirming— to the delight of the fans—that he liked Liza as more than a friend. And he knew exactly what the reason was, why he was starting to like her so much. He explains: “What really got me kay Liza is when kinuwento niya ‘yung buhay niya sa akin, and I found out more about her, parang nirespeto ko siya ng sobra-sobra, and (I realized), it doesn’t matter who you are, or where you came from. Kapag nakilala mo na ‘yung isang tao, what they’ve been through in life, how they’re taking it, how they overcame it, iba— and that siguro is how you fall in love with somebody.” The public was intrigued. Buoyed by this developing offscreen romance, interest in the Quen-Liza tandem started to spread. But the real bombshell was dropped on July 23, when Quen admitted to TV host and Queen of All Media Kris Aquino in a guesting on Kris TV 26

to promote their movie Just The Way You Are, that he had reached that point of no return. Turning to Liza, he said: “As I always say, it will always be you. Ikaw lang.” Then he coyly a dded, “I love you.” Kris couldn’t disguise her glee at that statement. “Ay, ang saya!” she exclaimed. Liza blushed. And now, to StarStudio, during this interview, Quen now says practically the same thing. It is a declaration as clear as his intentions to his leading lady. “Yeah, I guess you could say that. I am in love with Liza Soberano.” Liza, while less vocal than Quen about her feelings, has been dropping subtle hints of her own. When we finally get our turn with her—which is all of five minutes or so—we ask how she feels about Quen. After squirming a bit, she lets out a shy and girlish giggle. “Ummmm….he’s boyfriend material.” Then, she adds: “Totoo, sobra. He’s sweet, he’s caring, makulit, tapos ayaw niya na nalulungkot ako. Hindi siya papayag ‘pag may hindi ako gusto. He’s such a gentleman.” On a scale of 1 to 10, Liza’s ‘like’ of Enrique rates pretty high. “I’m at 9,” she says. “Di ko naman pinangarap na a boy would tell the whole world that he loves me, or something like that. But I was happy kasi akala ko, biro-biro lang, pero him telling me that I’m the only girl he said that about in interviews, it made me feel special.” Asked whether Quen could become her boyfriend one day—we put the question to her in Tagalog, asking, “May pag-asa ba itong si Enrique Gil?” Liza answers with only one word, but it is enough. She smiles and says, “Meron.”

Big change

Indeed, for both of them, what they have now seems real. Quen feels it more strongly—he’s happier than he’s ever been, and more expressive and vocal. It’s like he’s not afraid to tell the whole world about how much he loves this girl. “Maybe because it’s something I think is special and a (big) part of my life,” reflects the 23-year-old actor. He speaks about Liza to people because they are important to him, and he wants them to share in his

happiness. “I just want people to know, and to feel happy. And sometimes a lot of fans feel happy when they listen to interviews and hear these things. It gives them a little boost—to their confidence, to their relationships. When I feel good, I just wanna make people feel good. So, yeah.” And it’s not just Quen who sees or feels the change in him, in her, and in them. Quen’s mother Barbara, or Bambi, has seen Quen and Liza together a few times and says it comes as no surprise to her that he is the way he is toward Liza. Her son has always been a very kind person. “I don’t see any difference in the way he treats someone that’s close to him, friends, or people that he loves, or that he’s related to,” she says. “He cares about them. It’s very natural for him. With Quen, what you see is what you get. He does not hide anything. He tells it like it is. He’s very kind. His kindness always comes out. He can be very makulit, and he likes to play tricks on people. But when he likes a person, he likes a person.” He also loves children. Star Magic’s Ana Yambao—who, coincidentally, is also Liza’s handler—remembers that when they had to travel to Bhutan to tape episodes of Princess and I, Quen reached out to the children who were there. “During the taping, while on the bus waiting for his take, he saw children around playing, he even offered and gave them his baon na chocolate, and flew kites with them. He really has a soft spot for children,” says Ana. “And he is very charming and lovable talaga, malambing siya in his own way. He is not pretentious, he’s very, very natural at normal lang talaga siya.” And definitely, that kindness has come out in the way he treats Liza. People who’ve been with them in mall shows have seen how Quen insists on escorting Liza thru the crowd, even when there are safety marshals with them. Instead of the marshals clearing a way for both of them, it’s Quen who does it for Liza, extending his arms and half-wrapping them around her in a protective gesture. He also likes to give her gifts. “The

things that Liza would like, binibigay niya,” says his mom. Quen himself confirms this, and explains that he’s not trying to buy her affections; he just wants her to have the chance to lavish things on herself. He once gave her a bracelet for that very reason. “Siguro it’s more of I want her to enjoy. Parang that time kasi, she had a lot of priorities. I would ask her, ‘What kind of bag do you like?’ But she’s not the typical girl na (who would say) ‘I want this kind of bag.’ Ayaw niya. She’s mahiyain. I don’t think she’s ever bought herself something really expensive like bags or whatever. So I just wanted to do that for her, you know? At saka it was also more of congratulations lang because she was my leading lady in Forevermore, so I gave her that. I wanted her to get the feeling (of what it’s like to have that). If she has a lot of priorities, and it’s at the back of her mind to buy these mga girly stuff na she can’t just really buy for herself because she has other priorities (she needs) to settle first before (she can do) that. So (I was like), ‘Sige, you do your priorities, and ako na ang bahala.” This kindness and generosity also extend to other people close to Liza. When Quen and Liza went to the US, Quen’s mom says that while the two didn’t have much time to go around, Quen made sure that he reached out to Liza’s siblings. “Ganyan si Quen, sometimes, ibibigay na niya lahat,” says his mother. “When they were in the US, they met the family of Liza, and he only bought caps for himself. Everything else was concentrated on the siblings of Liza.” During that trip, Quen just fell instantly in love with Liza’s family. “I was nervous for her,” he says. “I was excited, nasa airplane pa lang kami, kasi imagine, seven years (sila hindi nagkita ng mom niya) so I wanted it to be perfect for her.” Ana, who accompanied them both on the trip, recalls that Liza, though she had good reason to be nervous, was perfectly calm, until the moment that they were about to deplane. As usual, Quen was right there. “She (Liza) was dizzy, and Quen and I would alternately guide her, offer her water, use the (baggage) cart while going out, till she finally saw her family.”

Quen spent time bonding with all of Liza’s family members. “It was cool. Super-kulit (sila). So sabi ko, ‘Parang cool ito ah, parang barkada lang.’ Man, I love them a lot. We shopped for them. I gave the kids caps. (I was wearing a cap), and one of Liza’s brothers was like, ‘Oh, that cap’s cool.’ (So I asked), ‘Want one?’ So I got him the same cap I was wearing, and now every day he wears it.” When Liza went back to the US to do a photo shoot, he bought them more pasalubong. He sent them hoodies, shirts, shoes, shorts, and stuffed toys for her younger sister. And all of Quen’s efforts have not been lost on Liza. During their Kris TV interview last July, she confessed that she never perceived anything that he’s said or done for her as ‘showbiz’ nor did she ever feel that he was doing them purely for selfish reasons. Kris replied: “So the more you got to know him, na-feel mo, ‘Okay ang lalaking ito?’ Liza answered: “Yeah, and I felt na hindi pala talaga siya showbiz at all. Especially when we’re together, you can see the true him.” Slowly, their relationship was moving to the next level—and now, it seems that it’s no longer just for the screen.

‘Something’s going on’

Quen’s former co-manager Carlo Orosa of Stages, who was there for the early build-up of his career, says one thing is for sure: that the friendship that bloomed on the set of Forevermore is now richer and deeper than before. “Their friendship has become deeper; I wouldn’t put it past me to think na there may be something going on. I don’t ask kasi. But it’s possible,” he confirms. And just by looking at how they behave toward each other, it’s easy to conclude that there is indeed something. “’Pag nakikita ko kasi sila, I could tell from the body language nila, they really care for each other,” says Carlo. “They’re always looking after each other, and they’re very sweet, even around people. Kahit di mo sila nakikitang nag-uusap, when they’re in a crowd, you know that there’s something, it’s hard to explain.”

28

Quen’s own mother also believes that there is, to use Carlo’s word, “something”. She puts it thus: “By all indications, probably.” Based on what she’s seen while working with them, Direk Cathy thinks there is a good chance for the Quen-Liza tandem to become one offscreen as well. “I think yes,” she says, adding, “Ang ganda naman ni Liza and ang guwapo ni Quen.” Dudu Unay, who discovered Liza years ago, confesses that like anyone else who is a fan of the Quen-Liza tandem, he too, feels a certain kilig when watching them. Their chemistry is undeniable. “As loveteam kasi gustong-gusto ko talaga sila,” he says. “Okay na okay ‘yung loveteam nila kasi nadala ni Enrique si Liza, at nadala ni Liza si Enrique.

It’s crazy, I can’t understand it, but it feels good.” – Quen

Kinikilig ako ‘pag nakikita ko sila, kasi crush ko talaga si Enrique. Ang guwapo kasi, tapos mestizo.” Liza’s Tita Joni (she is the cousin of Liza’s dad), who is Liza’s constant companion, believes that what began on the set of Forevermore has started to move to the next level. “Talagang siguro sa araw-araw silang magkasama sa Forevermore, nakapag-build na sila ng friendship nila. Makikita mo na magkalapit na ‘yung loob nila, ganu’n,” says Joni. But she’s not confirming anything. “Naku, hindi po!” she laughs. “Ang ibig ko pong sabihin, ‘yun bang palagay na sila sa isa’t-isa. Kasi nu’ng una talaga, kumbaga hindi sila masyadong nagkukuwentuhan sa set. Pero ngayon, parang ‘pag off-cam, nood-nood sila ng kung anu-ano sa YouTube. Kumbaga, makikita mo talaga na magkaibigan sila. Nagshe-share sila ng mga kwento nila, ganoon.”

Liza, unfortunately, is not allowed to have boyfriends yet, says her aunt—and it’s not just her Tita who isn’t in favor of the idea. “Lahat naman sa amin, pati lolo’t lola niya, (ayaw pa),” says Tita Joni. She then explains: “For us, bata pa siya. She’s only 17, at saka palagi naming pinapaalala sa kanya na ‘Don’t rush.’ Pero si Quen, nararamdaman ko na nanunuyo.” Everyone around her is watching out for Liza. Even her co-manager, entertainment columnist, host and actor Ogie Diaz, never misses an opportunity to warn her to be careful. Quen is a nice young man, but right now, it seems Ogie is of the belief that what’s important is preserving the gains of Liza’s career thus far. Thus, when there were reports that Quen gave in to fans’ requests to kiss Liza on the cheek during an out-of-town show, Ogie became alarmed. Manager and ward met up two days later, at which meeting Ogie recalls asking her, “Sabi ko, “Anak, nahalikan ka ba sa lips?” Liza replied, “Hindi po, Tito Ogie. Dito lang po (points to the lower cheek, near the lips) sa pisngi.” Ogie narrated: “’Sure ka?’ ‘Promise po, Tito Ogie. I swear,’ sabi niyang ganu’n. Ah. Okay. Siyempre kasi andu’n na. Sabi ko sa kanya na merong isang artista kasi na ‘pag merong hindi magagandang balita tungkol sa mga kabataang artista, ikinukwento ko kay Liza. ‘Anak, ‘wag na dapat mangyari sa’ yo ‘to.” Dudu adds that he and Ogie have an agreement with Liza. “May usapan din kasi kami ni Ogie kay Liza na ‘wag muna magbo-boyfriend. Dapat makapagpundar muna siya ng bahay, kasi sa buhay nila, nu’ng hindi pa artista si Liza, marami na rin siyang pinagdaanan. Kaya sinabihan namin si Liza na magpundar na muna at magpakayaman pa, kasi chance na niya ito.” In this, Quen is their most willing partner. He has as much an interest in protecting Liza and her career as they do. After all, the success of the Quen-Liza loveteam is anchored on the success of Quen and Liza as individuals—and however high and far they fly will depend on how well they take care of each other. Yes, without a doubt, this could be love, if it isn’t already.

They Who Love Them Amid the deafening cheers and applause that stars like Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano receive are the main reasons why they hit it big: the fans. Fans play a major role in catapulting actors to full-fledged stardom and the LizQuen tandem is one that has benefited from this. Tatak LizQuen, a fan club spearheaded by college students Riza Cabural, Mayie and Andie Azur, evolved from a small group of friends to a network of adoring fans coming from all corners of the world. The Tatak LizQuen fan club started off as a private Facebook group on December 24, 2014 at the peak of Forevermore’s popularity. Amy Musngi, admin head of the fan group, was asked to manage the club upon the request of the three college students. “Broken-hearted ako that time so kailangan ko ng diversion since nasa ibang bansa ako— sa UK. May TFC kami and naging interesado ako sa Forevermore. Pinanood ko siya pero hindi pa ako ganu’n ka-addicted. Habang tumatagal, sobrang nagustuhan ko siya,” Amy shares. She explains what drew her to the show. “Kasi may something kahit hindi magsalita si Enrique and Liza at magkatabi lang. Sa pilot episode, hindi mo sila nakikitang magkasama pero nakikita ko sila sa behind-the-scenes photos at makikita na may impact nga sila. They complement each other kasi physically and may chemistry sila!” Amy remarks. Lanie Legarda, also an admin of the Tatak LizQuen fans, gamely shares how she became an admirer of the tandem. “Doon din nag-umpisa sa Forevermore. Kasi that time, mahilig ako mamasyal and Baguio is one of my favorite places talaga. Nung nalaman ko na Baguio ang location, pinanood ko ‘yung pilot episode sa IWantTV,” she says. She admits that she wasn’t into the LizQuen tandem yet during the early episodes but the two stars grew on her. “One week ko siya pinanood, then na-hook ako and pinapanood ko na siya everyday sa TV. Kapag gusto ko ulitin, panonoorin ko sa I WantTV. Tapos nag-research ako about them. ‘Yung feelings ko kasi sa kanila naiba eh. Ako kasi ‘yung character ni Agnes, nakikita ko sa kanya palaban! Ako naman kasi opposite ng character niya. Nag-research ako tapos nakita ko ‘yung LizQuen Official fans group, naging member muna ako,” Lanie adds. The fans try to be there for their idols as much as they can, and wherever they can. Aimee Lyn of LizQuenfinity, another fan group that supports the pair, says that “Our most memorable moments with LizQuen usually happen during their birthday celebrations.” Last March, five of their members were invited to take part in reaching out to the during a charity event organized to coincide with Quen’s birthday. This was followed by a surprise birthday dinner for Quen on the set of Forevermore. Another memorable event was when the group went all the way to Baguio to celebrate Liza’s 17th birthday. Even the gifts they give are an indication of how much love they have for their idols. “It was also early this year when LizQuenfinity surprised LizQuen with a month-old Maltese puppy. Aimee Lyn says, adding, “LizQuen receiving their baby with much love was a sight that’s forever etched in (our) memory.” As a fan herself, Amy generously shares what she knows about how to formally start a group to support stars like Liza and Enrique. “Kami ang ginawa namin, nag-formal letter at sumulat kami kay Ms. Ana Yambao, Star Magic handler ni Liza and Quen. We introduced our fandom Tatak LizQuen, na ganito ‘yung international and local membership namin, and that we aim to support Liza and Quen. Actually, kailangan i-introduce mo talaga para may interaction,” Aimee helpfully advises. With passionate and adoring support from their fans, there is no doubt that the succeeding projects of the beloved LizQuen loveteam will gain ground. The genuine love they get from Liza and Quen will keep that fire alive. – Grace C. Diez

Members of the different fan clubs, fandoms and groups that support Liza and Quen express their support by showing up whenever the two have live appearances or guestings, and by organizing activities—like block screenings and birthday parties—for them. StarStudio • HONG KONG VO L 1 N O 9

Strong Together In a televised interview aired on TV Patrol, Enrique Gil—with Liza Soberano by his side—owned up to the ‘airplane incident’ and talked about ‘moving on and forward’. StarStudio revisits that moment and looks at how it strengthened what Quen and Liza have together

▶ 30

Liza also posted this wacky photo of her and Quen on her Instagram account a day before the TV Patrol interview aired.

A day after his televised apology, Enrique Gil--with a glowing Liza Soberano on his arm--showed up at the Star Magic Ball held at the Shangri-La Makati Hotel. It was a virtual declaration that everything was alright between them. The pair also took part in the cotillon, and the looks they gave each other prompted some observers and other guests to note that they were “dancing with such emotion”.

It was a defining moment, probably the most acid test of their on- and offscreen relationship. Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano faced the cameras together, although it was really Enrique who was at the center of the controversy over what people would come to refer to in the days that followed as the ‘airplane incident’. The incident, described as an altercation among some stars that began with Enrique and Jessy Mendiola, occurred September 4 on the flight carrying the ASAP 20 talents to the show they would stage in London, England. In the report televised on TV Patrol the evening of September 11, Enrique said to entertainment reporter Mario Dumaual: “I had some drinks in the plane and I mean, more than what I should only be having. So as a result, things got out of hand at dahil po doon, I wanna apologize to my brothers and sisters from Star Magic. I sincerely apologize to Jessy (Mendiola), to JM (de Guzman, Jessy’s boyfriend), if ever I offended them in any way. I’m sorry and ‘yun lang po, you know, tao lang na nagkakamali. We all make mistakes but you own up to it, you learn from it and you move on and forward.” The other actors who were involved had their own pieces to say, including Paulo Avelino and Jake Cuenca, who were accused of passing drinks to Quen in some reports. “Sa mga sinulat tungkol sa akin, everything is fabricated,” said Paulo Avelino. “Malinis ang konsensya ko. I didn’t do anything wrong,” echoed Jake Cuenca. At the same time, both actors saluted Enrique’s brave gesture of coming out and apologizing on television. “You live life and learn from your mistakes, that’s it. Go on. Mabait naman na bata si Enrique,” said Paulo. Jake expressed virtually the same thought: “Ako ang makakapagsabing he has a pure heart, (he’s) such a great guy.” June Rufino, manager of Luis Manzano (who was involved because he came to Jessy’s defense), issued a statement on his behalf. “There was an altercation. But apologies were made and accepted. It was actually Enrique who apologized to the aggrieved party.” Enrique assured the LizQuen supporters that both he and Liza are holding up fine under the trying circumstances. “It’s the first and last time that this will ever happen, so thank you so much po sa lahat ng fans namin na sumusuporta sa amin, for all your love and support.

We love you, and we just want to reassure you that we are okay, we’re fine.” Liza, who had for the most part been sitting quietly beside Quen, showed her support for her beleaguered loveteam partner, and took the time to say thank you to their supporters. It was a gesture that showed everyone how strong their young loveteam is, and that even if there are tougher situations and intrigues they will face in the future, that the chances of them pulling through are strong. Indeed, for them to survive a test as tough as this one and to come out of it still together was saying a lot. It proved that #forevermore wasn’t just a word. Liza said: ““Thank you for understanding, na nandiyan lang kayo sa panahon na kailangan kayo ni Quen. Sana kahit nangyari po ‘yung mga nangyari, hindi po kayo magsawa na magpakita ng pagmamahal and to support Quen.” The interview ended with an intriguing question Dumaual put to Quen: “May forever pa naman?” To which the actor responded: “Yeah, forever.” — based on an interview by Mario Dumaual for TV Patrol

Now on TFC TFC@theMovies marks simultaneous opening week for ‘Etiquette For Mistresses ‘ worldwide

Much-awaited film with powerhouse ensemble of Kris Aquino, Kim Chiu, Iza Calzado, Cheena Crab and Claudine Barretto to premiere worldwide starting Oct 1

“E

tiquette For Mistresses,” Star Cinema’s upcoming and muchawaited offering, creates a major historic milestone as it will be the very first Filipino film that will be shown in cinemas around the world by TFC@ theMovies on the same week of its opening day in the Philippines. Right after its grand red carpet premiere at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City in the Philippines on September 29, “Etiquette For Mistresses” will open in cinemas nationwide starting September 30 (Wednesday) and will also have screenings on the same week in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait on October 1; in the United States and Canada on October 2; in Vienna, Austria on October 3 (6:30 p.m.); in London, United Kingdom on October 3 and 4; in Milan (10:00 a.m.

and 12:30 p.m.) and Rome (10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.), Italy on October 4; and in Paris, France on October 3 (3:00 p.m.), 4 (3:00 p.m.), and then on Oct 11 (1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.). The movie will also screen thereafter in Sydney and New Zealand on October 8 and in Singapore on October 18. The screening of “Etiquette for the Mistresses” is truly a milestone for TFC@ theMovies according to its Business Unit Head, John-D Lazatin. “While TFC has been screening movies for as long as we can remember and TFC@theMovies has been producing films specifically for the overseas Filipino audience since 2011, these simultaneous screenings speak not only of how we always strive to deliver the best from the homeland and tailor fit content for our OF audience, but also create that shared

experience amongst Filipinos in the Philippines and elsewhere in the world,” says Lazatin. Directed by master storyteller Chito Rono and written for the big screen by Kriz Gazmen and Patrick Valencia, “Etiquette For Mistresses” is inspired by journalist and author Julie YapDaza’s best-selling book of the same title. The film brings together an amazing ensemble cast of the country’s finest acting talents led by Claudine Barretto, Iza Calzado, Cheena Crab, Kim Chiu, and Kris Aquino. “Etiquette For Mistresses” is centered on a group of sophisticated, well-mannered mistresses who embark on their individual journeys to find love. Issues arise in their lives because not all mistresses are alike – there are those who exemplify the stereotype while there

are those who position themselves accordingly because they are truly aware of their place in the sun. The mistresses seem to have everything yet they feel that they have nothing because deep inside, they know that their love will never be whole. They all struggle to break their hearts free from the prisons they themselves helped create. “Etiquette For Mistresses” offers moviegoers a glimpse of the varied stories, different loves, and many pains found in the secret world of mistresses. Coco Martin top bills ABS-CBN’s adaptation of the FPJ classic

ABS-CBN’s “Ang Probinsyano” goes worldwide via TFC beginning next week

A

BS-CBN and Dreamscape Entertainment Television’s adaptation of “Ang Probinsyano,” one of the classic films of Da King Fernando Poe Jr., is set to air worldwide via The Filipino Channel (TFC) next week on September 28, Monday (September 29, Tuesday Australian Daylight Savings Time or AEST, New Zealand Daylight Savings Time or NZDT, and Guam time) with Teleserye King Coco Martin top billing the program. Through the partnership of ABS-CBN and FPJ Productions, “Ang Probinsyano” will be the newest classic that will be turned into a drama series featuring the heroism of the country’s policemen. According to the Queen of Philippine Movies Ms. Susan Roces, her late husband Da King entrusted the library of all his films under FPJ Production to ABS-CBN President and CEO Charo SantosConcio. “Ang Probinsyano,” which is also sub-titled in English for nonFilipino speaking viewers, follows the journey of twins Ador and Cardo,

•SSM_HONGKONG_VOL1NO9- 215mmx280.indd 34

played by Martin, who are estranged because of financial reasons. This remained true, even as they followed the path of law enforcement. Ador is a celebrated police officer, with a loving family as a support system. Cardo, on the other hand, loves the solitude of the mountains as a Special Action Forces (SAF) Trooper. Their lives take a turn when Ador gets himself entangled in a syndicate which leaves him dead. To keep this fact under wraps, Cardo was ordered to assume the identity of his brother and be reunited with the grandmother whom he detests. How will Cardo fit into the life of his brother, Ador, whose world is entirely different from the one he knows? Will he ever get the chance to avenge his brother? Joining Martin in the powerhouse cast of “Ang Probinsyano” are Maja Salvador, Arjo Atayde, Albert Martinez, Agot Isidro, Bela Padilla, Joey Marquez, Jaime Fabregas, and Ms. Susan Roces as Cardo and Ador’s grandmother. Also part of the cast are Dennis Padilla, Ana Roces, Zaijan Jaranilla, Malu De Guzman, Marvin Yap, Pepe Herrera, Lester Llansang, John Medina, Michael Jornales, Gio Alvarez, Tess Antonio, and introducing the newest child star, Simon Pineda. ”Ang Probinsyano” is under the direction of Avel Sunpongco and Malu Sevilla. Do not miss the worldwide premiere of the TV adaptation of the FPJ classic, “Ang Probinsyano” on September 28, Monday (September 29, Tuesday, AEST, NZDT, and Guam time) on TFC worldwide. he Voice of the Philippines” season 2 grand winner Jason Dy and season 1 finalist Klarisse de Guzman amazed Filipinos in Aberdeen, Hong Kong last August 30 as they shared not only their talent but also their inspiring stories in the “World Caravan Global Pinoy Singing Idol” at the Ap Lei Chau Hall. Jason and Klarisse were the special guests of the group The Lord’s Flock. In the event, 10 finalists were chosen amongst the 42 contestants who joined the annual singing contest sponsored by ABS-CBN, DZMM, and TFC Hong Kong. Relating to the contestants, Klarisse, who described herself as a cheerful, happy-go-lucky person, shared what she felt during “The Voice” audition. “I was so nervous while singing on stage. I didn’t realize that the four judges already turned around. I was shaking, and I really didn’t see the judges and coaches so when I saw that four chairs were turned, my reaction was like, WOW!” shared Klarisse, who sang her rendition of the OPM song “Tulak ng Bibig, Kabig ng Dibdib.” Though she continued her studies after losing the competition under Sarah Geronimo’s guidance, Klarisse felt that she just can’t put her love for singing behind. True enough, her dream to sing with the Asia’s Nightingale Lani Misalucha came true when she had the chance to perform with her idol in ASAP. “She is really my idol whom I used to watch only in concerts,” she said. As singing has always been her passion, Klarisse hopes that there will be a songwriter who can come up with a song tas beautiful as Michael Jackson’s “We Are The World,” where all OPM artists can sing together for a cause.

Meanwhile, Jason, who used to serenade for a living, said that joining “The Voice” is the first time he experienced feeling that kind of nervousness, that his knees were really shaking. So when he saw the coaches turned their chairs, he told myself, “This is it!” He passed the first level of competition and he was so happy As a homebody who loves cooking and eating, Jason said that he would rather stay home, and chill at home than going out. He even shared that he wants to be able to sing Michael Bubble’s version of “Feeling Good” because it is a really feel good song. “I have been given the privilege to sing with some of the most talented singers, but I really would like to perform with Ms. Regine Velasquez,” said Jason. Five years from now, Jason hopes that he can have his own concert at the Araneta Coliseum. “I hope I would still be in the business and can produce more albums not only for me but also for other artists,” he added. Like Jason, Klarisse, who has been a band member, also hopes that five years from now, she will have a major concert and more albums to come. She currently has one album that has been recently launched. When asked for their wishes for the aspiring contestants of the “Global Pinoy Singing Idol,” Klarisse said that she wishes for all the singers of the DZMM good luck, and that whether they win or lose, they should just keep on singing. Jason, on the other hand, related his advice to his journey. “I sometimes would ask myself if this is really what is meant for me, but I still continue, my passion for music. If it is meant for you, go and hone your craft. Don’t give up!” he said.

When asked what is his favorite dish, Chef Sau simply replied that his favorite food is Philippine’s very own adobo as he can associate it with himself. But if there’s one dish that he is totally proud of, it is his version of his mom’s Kare-Kare with macadamia nuts and bagnet, which is the best seller among the dishes that he cooks. Currently, Chef Sau is the Culinary Director of the Centre of Culinary Arts (CCA) Manila. He is dedicated in mentoring and honing the next generation of budding chefs in the country. In fact, he was commissioned by the Department of Tourism as the ambassador of Philippine Cuisine to regularly showcase it in Asia, US, Australia and the Middle East. Chef Sau also recently launched a book entitled “20 Years of Love and Cooking” which tells two decades of his journey into the culinary world. As he continues his advocacy, Chef Sau is hopeful that he can put the Philippines in the gastronomic map. This is why he advises aspiring chefs no never stop exploring and learning. “Travel as much as you can and try to learn from these experiences. Educate yourself, absorb as much knowledge as you can. But don’t forget you need to go back to the Philippines and help build the nation,” Chef Sau said.

ur featured OFW is one of the few chartered member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in Hong Kong, Institution of Civil Engineers in Australia and American Society of Civil Engineers. Born in Malabon, Philippines, Engineer Edwin Gutierrez cam from a middle class family with two sisters who are accountants-Myrna who lives in Australia and Cynthia who resides in Manila. Being the middle child and the only son, Edwin receives most of the attention and became very protective of his siblings. He recalled that he was just an average student, unlike his sisters who excel in class and usually receive rewards from their lawyeraccountant father. Back when he was still a kid, Edwin has always dreamt of becoming an engineer, though he prefered mechanical than civil. But when he entered Mapua Institute of Technology in 1984, Edwin decided to take up Civil Engineering instead and earned another degree in Sanitary Engineering graduating in 1988 and 1989 respectively. His perseverance and diligence as a working student in Mapua eventually paid off 42

as he graduated with two degrees after five years. In fact, Edwin even landed in the top 9 in his batch, out of 129 graduating students. He passed the licensure examination in 1989. Edwin’s road to success continued after graduation as his professors offered him to teach the math subject in his Alma Mater. After a year, Edwin faced a tough decision when he opted to resign from teaching because he was offered to work in a consulting firm as a Structural Engineer. He stayed in the firm for almost three years, where he had some of his most notable designs including the 20-hectare factory of Toyota in Laguna and GMT Tower. In 1993, Edwin was offered to work for Hopewell Company in Guangdong, China to design a power plant with around 2,000 megawatts (Shiajiao C Power Station). He later on moved to Hong Kong in 1994 after seeing a potential job in the city when the Hong Kong Airport was still under construction. To name a few of his overseas work, he was one of the designers for Central Subway Station connecting the Central and Hong Kong Station. He also designed most of the bridges

in Tai Wai and Chai Wan Kok area, the longest span bridge in Castle Peak Road Hong Kong, and Macleay River Bridge in Australia. For almost 20 years in Hong Kong, Edwin shared that he struggled to be on top of his field. But despite all these challenges, he learned to have a positive attitude and thankful that he was able to overcome all the trials in the past. He was the past chairman of Square and Compass Club Hong Kong (SCCHK) wherein they have an annual charity bowling event for the benefit of the less fortunate people in the Philippines. He is also part of the group composed of engineers, architects and technician called Association of Filipino Builders in Hong Kong (also known as Builders), which was established in 2000. One of the first projects they worked on was the Free Engineering Consultancy (FEC) that was executed in 2005. In this project, Edwin and other members of Builders give out free drawings that are needed when building a house. “Our group gives free services to domestic workers and our fellow kababayans who have no idea about the requirements in building a house in the Philippines. We give them ideas and techniques in building a house, so if ever they lack in budget, they can prioritize building essential part of structure in stages” he shared. Edwin reiterates that they do this for free. They usually do this service during Philippine Independence Day Celebration in June. Personally, for Edwin, the greatest legacy he ever did in Hong Kong was the bridges he designed. “I designed this bridge. In some ways, I am part of this bridge..” he often tells his family and relatives whenever they pass by his achievement. Being one of the most successful engineers in Hong Kong who has designed more than 50 bridges/structures and still counting, Edwin mentioned that he wants to help solve the traffic in EDSA if given the chance. He recommends that the government should first look into improving the drainage system and ways of expanding different road networks. “The problem is we don’t have any more space to expand. You need to build more highways but this problem cannot be fixed by infrastructure alone. Filipinos should all be disciplined to make it work,” he added. Edwin has four kids—Kevin who’s working at Metrobank, Joshua who’s taking up Aeronautical Engineering, and Khyle and Sarah who are still both in high school. When asked about his advice for young engineers, Edwin said that they should look for opportunities that will enable them to grow as professionals. “Put your heart and mind in everything you do. Everything will be possible” he adds.

Best of Both Worlds: Mom and Music “I would go on forever as education is endless and it’s non-stop”

W

hat does it take to be a mother? What sacrifices can you endure for the sake of your kids? How about in taking care of more than a dozen of kids including special ones? Our proud mom for this issue hails from Bulacan, Philippines and a mother of two-musically inclined kids. Agnes Aduna Quilicot, who is more fondly called “Sister Agnes” by her close friends, grew up with four siblings (Jay, Anna, Ave and Arlyn). Her mom is a midwife and a teacher at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and her dad is an engineer. At a very young age, Agnes can play the piano by ear and most of her family members can sing and play musical instruments. They bonded through music as they love to perform and play during their spare time when they were growing up. She went to the University of the Philippines-Diliman to pursue her passion in Music but her dad told her to pursue another career instead. She shifted to AB Psychology but then decided to be transferred to the course Theatre Arts. Agnes was not happy because she wanted was to fulfill her dream to be in the conservatory of music. It wasn’t until later that she was able to convince her dad to let her take Music as her degree. In UP, Agnes met Dennis Tanada Quilicot who started off as her friend and later on became the father of their two wonderful kids, Daniel Aaron 9 years old and Alicia Marie 8 years old. They got married in UP in 2001, had their first child in 2006, and had their second one a year after. Proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, both of her kids can sing, play musical instruments and compose music. Agnes recalls how her eldest child Daniel can easily recognize musical instruments only by listening. She shared that she would sometimes hear the kids harmonizing and attested they are in perfect pitch. In 2007, Dennis decided to apply in

Bida Kapamilya Hong Kong and landed a job to perform in Disneyland. After a year, Agnes followed Dennis as she got a job as a music teacher. Agnes shared how painful it was to be away from her kids but admitted that they needed to be away in order to provide a better future for them. “Because of technology nowadays, we usually talk to them through Skype but soon after we log out, we burst into tears because we miss them and we love them,” Agnes recalls. So less than a year later, Agnes and Dennis decided to bring their kids in Hong Kong too. “As responsible parents, we planned ahead as we know that the cost of living here is too expensive,” she shared. When their kids arrived in Hong Kong, Agnes and Dennis hired a nanny to take care them. However, Agnes’s major concern was how her kids will be able to adapt with the culture and the language barrier. She made sure though that her children can still speak the Filipino language and practice Filipino values. Agnes shares that she is a disciplinarian mom and very hands-on. They maintain openness as they talk to their kids most of the time. She always emphasizes to her kids the value of education and responsibility.

“They must always finish their homeworks and follow their 8:00 pm bedtime. If they cannot finish their tasks, they need to face the consequences,” she said. Currently, Agnes is not only a mom of two kids but also to a dozen more as she is a music teacher at Vienna Boys Choir Music Pedagogue. Agnes recalls how fulfilling her role as a second mom to all her students. She even experienced teaching a special child whose parents are so proud of the developments of their kid. Agnes shared that she recently handled another special child with “Aspergers Syndrome” (an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), one of a distinct group of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by social impairment, communication difficulties, and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior). “He didn’t have any friends until fourth year. I would often see him talking to plants. So I encourage him to join the choir and now he passed the Royal School of Music as a pianist and as a composer. He’s also out first student to reach the A level music. His parents were very thankful as their son’s have improved his social skills,” Agnes shares. With these developments and transformation, it was very fulfilling on Agnes’ part as a teacher who made a difference in the children’s lives. She believes miracles can happen and that education is endless and non-stop. She wishes her family to be equipped financially and spiritually and be a source of inspiration to others. Agnes’ advocacy and passion in music continues as she also teaches group of kids called Kids Praise Team (KPT) in Tung Chung. Lastly, Agnes shared her latest accomplishment, both as a mother and a music teacher, as she finished her original composition “Never Alone.”

Darren Espant too early to bring pride to the country

D

arren Espanto may have won second place in 2014’s “The Voice of the Philippines Kids” (TVK) but for his family and almost thousands of his supporters, he is a champion. Darren, born in 2001, started his career as a singer fairly young. In his second home of Canada, Darren joined a local competition, “Masters Finals of Pinoy Singing Sensation” and won. He was also the youngest finalist in Canadian television YTV’s reality television The “Next Star” in 2012. However, it was only in 2014, when he won 2nd place at TVK when he breached the entertainment radar. While Darren won second place, Darren rose to become one of the more popular young singers. In December 2014, he launched his self-titled album which debuted as no. 1 not only in the Philippine charts but also at the Apple’s

T

he youth they say is the future of our nation. Cliché as it may seem, this adage holds true for young Filipinos as they have the physical capabilities to fulfill the physical demands of their mission in life and the zest to realize whatever cause they are passionate about. In Lucena City in Quezon, teacher Medel Huerto, recognizing the potential in the youth, formed The Youth for Environment in School Organization – Lucena City National High School (YESO LCNHS) Ransohan Mangrove Reforestation Program in Barangay Ransohan, Lucena Quezon in June 2012 to enable the students to play

iTunes and Astro Chart. More than that, the album soon became Platinum in the Philippine charts. Darren’s string of early achievements did not end there. In January of 2015, he was chosen to sing “Tell the World of His Love,” during Pope Francis’s Inter-Faith meeting and Encounter of Youth at the University of Sto. Tomas. As a cap to his early achievements this year, Espanto staged his highly successful solo concert at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, making him the youngest artist to ever hold a concert in the iconic venue. Darren’s achievements does not only speak of the greatness of the Filipino youth

a more proactive role in protecting the environment. Through YES-O, young members of the community have been thinking of ways to specifically to contribute to the protection of the mangrove forests in their own way. One of these means is the harvesting of propagules (According to the Merriam Webster, is a “structure as a cutting, seed, or spore that propagates a plant’s usage”) from the fully-grown mangroves along the coast and re-planting them across other places. The reforestation program is now YESO’s core program. Aside from the members, youth volunteers join the

but also of the young Pinoys who may be far from their homeland but continue to bring pride to the homeland. Darren was born to overseas Filipino (OF) parents who lived in Edmonton. As a young OF who shares his musicality and Filipino talent to the world, Darren was chosen to be the performer of TFC’s 2015 station ID “Galing ng Filipino.” He joins 19 other Filipino individuals and groups who tell the world of their pride as Filipinos. Darren, at age 14, has a long road yet ahead of him. With a good start, the future that lies ahead definitely promises of more milestones to come.

tree-planting efforts of the organization. Out-of-school youth who previously spend their time idly now take part in workshops that teach stakeholders the importance of mangroves, how to care for newly-planted mangrove and let them flourish. Also, since then, a total log ban has been implemented in the area. Residents of Lucena City now use the wood from mangroves which could no longer be used, and dried-out from the sun, instead of cutting down trees. Since the program started, the high school program has been established in nearby partner schools. To propagate its cause, the organization is looking at aquasilviculture (creating livelihood between fishpond and mangrove

reforestation), and the adaptation of their mangrove reforestation across Quezon and perhaps all over the country. Seeing the potential of the YES-O, schools, both public and private, along with local government units and nongovernment organizations have thrown their support for the program and the organization. TFC, recognizing the valuable contribution of YES-O to the environment, recently validated their contribution as YES-O was chosen as one of the youth representatives in the network’s 2015 station ID, highlighting the ‘galing ng Filipino.’ Truly the Filipino youth’s greatness cuts across from entertainment, to the academe and to social work.

he most wonderful time of the year is just around the corner, folks! Aside from celebrating the Yuletide season with families, friends, and co-workers ‘til dawn, some couples are bound to make the season even lovelier as they throw the perfect year ender by tying the knot. While ladies are more popularly known to take this time to dress-up and glam-up, men, too, can suit up (sans suit) and go in style for the occasion. Men can swoon and sweep the ladies off their feet by going casual and formal at the same time with long sleeved polo shirts, slacks or khakis, stylish vests, and a killer smile. But as a part of our tradition and culture, one cannot go wrong with a definite must-have for every Filipino man, a Barong Tagalog. As they say, nothing makes a man look sharper than one who embrace his roots and race. It’s simple, dashing, and classic.

Can't Sleep

• •

By: Michael M. Manio, MD, MHPED, PhD

H

aving difficulty in falling asleep or do you usually have interrupted or inadequate sleep? You might be suffering from insomnia. Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep and many of them experience insomnia at some point. Some people even have long-term insomnia.

What is insomnia?

Insomnia is a persistent disorder that makes it hard for human beings to fall asleep, stay asleep or both, despite having the opportunity to have an adequate one. If you usually wake up feeling unrefreshed, and you feel like it affects your energy level, mood, health, work performance, and quality of life, you might be suffering from this disorder.

What are the symptoms?

Someone with insomnia often takes 30 minutes or more to fall asleep, and may only get less than six hours of sleep regularly. It includes the following symptoms: • Difficulty falling asleep at night • Waking up in the middle of the night • Waking up too early • Not feeling well rested after a night’s sleep • Tension headache • Daytime tiredness or sleepiness • Difficulty paying attention, focusing on tasks or remembering • Increased errors or accidents • Gastrointestinal upset • Worries about sleep • Irritability, anxiety or depression

Why do people have insomnia?

This disorder may be the primary problem, or it may be secondary due to other causes, such as diseases or medications. The following are the common causes of insomnia:

•SSM_HONGKONG_VOL1NO9- 215mmx280.indd 46

If you are stressed particularly about work, school, health or family can keep your mind active at night; thus making it difficult to sleep. Stressful life events like death or illness of a loved one, divorce, or job loss can lead to insomnia. Anxiety – including post-traumatic stress disorder Insomnia often occurs among patients with mental health disorders including depression. Chronic pain and medical conditions like arthritis, cancer, heart failure, lung disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), overactive thyroid, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease these conditions are all linked to insomnia. Changes in your environment or work schedule. Working late, early shift and travel can disrupt your body’s circadian rhythms, making it difficult for you to sleep. Poor sleeping habits such as having an irregular sleep schedule, an uncomfortable sleep environment, doing stimulating activities before bed, and using your bed for activities other than sleep or sex. Prescription drugs like antidepressants, heart and blood pressure medications, and stimulants can interfere with sleep and may lead to insomnia. Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Drinking coffee in the late afternoon can keep you from falling asleep at night. Nicotine in tobacco products is another stimulant that can cause insomnia. Alcohol is a sedative that may help you fall asleep, but it prevents deeper stages of sleep and often causes you to awaken in the middle of the night. Eating too much late in the evening may cause you to feel physically uncomfortable while lying down, making it difficult to get to sleep.

While insomnia is more common for adults, it may also be a concern for children and teenagers as well. Some children and teens simply have difficulty getting to sleep or resist a regular bedtime because their internal clocks are more delayed. They prefer to go to bed later and sleep later in the morning. You have a greater risk of having insomnia if: • You’re a woman • You’re older than 60 years old • You have a mental health disorder • You’re under a lot of stress • You work at night or changing shifts • You travel long distances Sleep is very important for our bodies to function normally. People with insomnia reportedly have a lower quality of life compared with people who are sleeping well. Lower performance on the job or at school, slowed reaction time, irritability, substance abuse and a higher risk and severity of long-term diseases are just some of the major complications of insomnia. If you are currently experiencing the symptoms mentioned above and having difficulty to fall asleep at night, you might be having insomnia. See your physician to determine what might be the cause of your sleep problem and how it can be treated. If you have a sleep disorder, you might be referred to a sleep center for special testing.
