The first World Goa Day was held on 20 August 2000. Its primary objective was and is to unite Goans, Goan Associations and Special Interest Groups all over the world in a day of common celebration and a show of solidarity. WGD has evolved, it has grown to mean much more to Goans besides just drinking, dancing and singing ... it is about our Goan Heritage and what it means to be Goan. Today WGD is celebrated by almost all the Goan Associations around the world - who are PROUD of their Goan Heritage and believe that we must Work Together to preserve our Goan Heritage. For the very first time in our WGD ... 15 years of existence, we are planning to work with Goan organisations in Goa to bring the Villages of Goa into our fold and link Goans abroad to their Villages in Goa via Skype - this will be a chance for Goans who are Proud of their villages to get involved and also be in sync with our theme this year ―Goa, a land of beautiful villages‖.

WGD celebrates its 16th anniversary this year (2015). We need to sustain the legacy of Konkani our Goan language, heritage and culture for future generation of Goans. Promoting our language, encouraging Goan Associations to teach Konkani to our children like rest of the Indians do for their children should be priority. The date for World Goa Day is officially the 20th of August, but for practical reasons, the occasion is celebrated on or around this date. It has been suggested that 'a day' be set aside to commemorate the WGD. This year our theme is - the uniting Goans trough the beautiful villages of Goa. We are appealing to all Goans to support the Villages they come from and be a proud son or daughter of the soil. Let’s ensure that the rich and centuries old traditions of preparing Goan cuisine is enjoyed for posterity by Goans and friends of Goa and Goans world-wide. Lest we forget! -

The dynamic duo comprise the WGD Global team who in turn will be working with Coordinators from all over the world. WGD Overall Coordinator A sincere greeting to all Goans around the world. I was born, bred and educated in Tanzania. My ancestral home in Goa is in Borda, Margao. I am currently living in Sydney with my family – my wife Alzira and my son Clinton (graduating to be a doctor later this year) and my daughter Cherie (a radiographer at Westmead Hospital). Regarding my qualifications, I have completed an MBA from Sydney, am a Fellow of a number of professional bodies around the world including the Chartered Institute UK and the Financial Services Institute of Australasia. My services to the Goan community started in the 1980s as a young Treasurer of the Dar es Salaam Institute and continues to-date. I currently serve the community here in Sydney as the President of the GOA NSW and have been the longest serving President in the 39 years history of the Association. I also dedicate my time to the wider Indian community as Public Relations Director of the Council of Indian Australians NSW. I am the Vice President of the newly formed Indian Support Centre – Sydney, and am also a member of the Finance Committee of my local Parish - Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. One of my highlights was working with Goan leaders globally in 2008 to form the World Alliance of Goan Organisations (WAGOA) – The 2008 Global Reunion Dance was organised at the Mandovi Riviera in Goa and was a great success. Goans from over 20 countries attended the Dance. World GOA Day celebrations reminds us of our proud Goan heritage - one that is worth celebrating now and preserving for future generations of Goans. The current young generation - our youth, are very tech-savy and well connected through social media and are keen for more information about their culture and traditions, cuisine, language, the allpervasive Goan hospitality, where their ancestors came from and what it means to be a Goan today. WGD celebrations provides a good and appropriate opportunity to showcase all these things. Let’s be proud Goans and celebrate our culture, language, traditions, music and more. I call upon all Goan Associations, Interest Groups, Restaurants and Families to dedicate some time to celebrate. WGD General Secretary Hi Everyone my name is Deborah Santamaria also known as Debbie / Deb among my circle of friends. Born and brought up in Karachi, Pakistan the languages spoken were English and Urdu. At home my parents and grandmothers would speak to us in English, but my love for GOA and our Mai Bhas Konkani encouraged me to learn this beautiful language, which I mastered from hearing the elders speak in our neighborhood. My passion for our Mai Bhas resulted in me being offered a stage role which I accepted with great honor. My first Konkani play"Africacho Nauro" was staged at the St Joseph's Convent Hall In 1975. The 1990s saw a number of performances, such as "Bebdo Gorkar" in 1990, "Goemcho Badkar" in 1992 and "Miracle of St. Anthony" in 1994, all of them produced and directed by my great uncle Bernard D'Souza. After my great uncles departure to the USA, his absence was very much felt, as our community missed the Konkani plays. It was this very pursuit that never diminished my passion at writing Konkani skits and songs which were put up at our various events. The Goinkars Own Academy (GOA) Karachi PAKISTAN was established in 2001, by Maurice Couthino , as the Goans of Pakistan joined hands with organizations/associations the world over to celebrate World Goa Day, which was a brain child of “Rene Barreto” . World Goa Day (WGD) was introduced to commemorate the anniversary of the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution by the Indian Parliament on the 20th August 1992, when Konkani was recognized as one of the official languages of India. After the migration of Maurice Couthino - President Goinkars Own Academy (GOA) to Canada, I, the then Secretary of (GOA) stepped into Maurice’s shoes and kept the Goinkars Own Academy (GOA) flag flying. Goinkars Own Academy (GOA) has not only made a name for it selves in Karachi Pakistan, but the world over, as it not only promotes the Goan Culture, but also keeps alive our Mai Bhas Konkani. GOA also arranges various events/outings i.e. Recollection Day, Weekend trips, Picnics, Family Day, visit to various homes, resultantly bringing the community together socially and spiritually. At the First World Konkani Cultural Convention held in Manglore, Goinkars Own Academy was among 25 Konkani Associations from around the world to be presented with an award by the honorable President of India Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil for contribution to the growth and preservation of Konkani in the region. GOA is also the founding member JKS Global Konkani Organization in Manglore. My daughter Naomi Santamaria too takes active part in all my initiatives and I would definitely like to see her step into my shoes and take Goinkars Own Academy (GOA) to even greater heights. Background Writing a special Traditional Goan Sweets Cookbook is often a dream of the worldwide Goan community. And, why not? This is not your average project. It is a project that will touch many people and many families for generations to come; some of who have not yet been born. This project involves some of the very best and respected Goan “foodies” around the globe, who will share their personal “secrets and never before told tips” in preparing some of the traditional old time favourite Goan sweets. Recipes are a treasure trove of experience, history, and love all rolled into one and it's great to share this experience with others. Preserving your recipes for future generations as well as your contemporaries is a very worthy reason to write this Goan Traditional Sweets Cookbook. And who knows? You might even be quoted for centuries to come as this book may become a classic. So let’s do dedicate our time and effort to get it right and treat this project as one of our giving goals - that is sharing your God given talent for the benefit of others. Why are we compiling this cookbook Our focus in this issue is to share the all-time favorite Goan Traditional Sweets recipes with the global Goan community. Preserving recipes for future generations as well as your contemporaries is a very worthy reason to write this classic Goan Traditional Sweets eBook. This is one way we can connect to our current younger generation of Goans and at the same time take this rich Goan traditional cuisine to a level that continues in perpetuity. Select your best or favorite recipes A good cookbook is an assemblage of a well thought-out collection of recipes that reflect themes – “Classic all-time favorite Goan traditional sweets” Suggest we have a dozen to start with and if required, grow to 20. This would probably keep the total number of pages to 50 or less. Since this is the 16 th year of WGD celebrations perhaps 16 would be the “Magic” number. Prepare the recipes Suggest we always use our own words when writing up the recipes. While lists of ingredients are not covered by copyright and common ways of performing recipe actions are usually not copyright either, the words used to describe the methods in each step or as a whole are copyright, so you must use your own words where you are relying on your cookbook collection. Photos taken will be unique and therefore will not infringe on copyright. Acknowledge where possible. If you know you've used a recipe from a favorite chef for the past few years, consider acknowledging the original source, even though you've long since deviated from the exact same ingredients. It's a common courtesy and helps to maintain the sense of ongoing sharing and pride that is commonplace in the cooking community. Take photos Strongly suggest adding actual photos taken to your recipe, make up the sweet in question and photograph them step by step. Contemporary readers tend to expect more images in cookbooks than was the case in cookbooks of the past. Photos help the reader imagine the end result more concretely and give inspiration to try the dish out. This is an outcome we want with this project – inspire other and perpetuate our cuisine. Take several photos from differing angles to get the best possible final shot of each recipe being photographed. This photo will be on the cover page among others. Make any changes to photos using photo fixing software or Debbie will do that. If you can't take photos or don't like doing it while juggling the cooking, find a friend or family member willing to help. Important: You need to share your own colored Passport size photo to be featured with the recipe contributed and a brief blurb about you – your current location, why it’s your favorite Goan sweet, passed on from generations, if applicable; some words of inspiration for others to try; email address or web/blog site.

We are delighted to feature the dynamic and talented “Gonzaga Coutinho” a pianist, singer, author and composer. World Goa Day Team 2015 – Rene Baretto, Tony Colaco and Debbie Santamaria. Gonzaga Coutinho, born in Mozambique, pianist, singer, author and composer of several musical works, got all his musical inspiration in the 60s. Possessor of a talent and extensive experience and musical repertoire acquired throughout his career. 1979 - Participated in the RTP Song Festival with the song “Tema para um homem só” (Theme for a man only) reaching the final at the Teatro Monumental. 1980/83 - He recorded three singles for the label "Polygram" and various programs in RTP, and performances by parents and abroad. 2002 - recorded the CD "Indíco" one world music project in parcearia with Portuguese artists. 2005 - recorded the CD "Saudades de Tom" a tribute to the maestro Tom Jobim participating in duets with Rui Veloso, Ivan Lins and Sofia Vitória. 2011 - recorded the CD "Shangri-La Goa" to the international label ArcMusic with traditional themes of Goan music, and appearances by Rao Kyao, Carlos Guilherme and Susana Brito. 2015 - CD recording "Songs of Goa and Lisbon" continuing the earlier work with Paulo de Carvalho and Sonia Shirsat. Gonzaga also participates in animation of various business events i.e. sols (Piano and Voice) / as well as trio jazz.

World Goa Day Team 2015 – Rene Baretto, Tony Colaco and Debbie Santamaria. Sharon Mazarello, popularly known in the Konkani music world as „The Voice Of Goa‟ is a Graduate in B.A. (with honours in psychology) of the Mumbai University. She is also a distinction student of Music in grade I, II & III of the Trinity College of Music, London. Having shot to fame in her very first solo song appearance on stage way back in the 80s in Mumbai which won her the title “Nightingale Of The Konkani Stage”, Sharon, as a singer, has come a long way in the konkani entertainment world, winning laurels and inumerable awards on the way, in her singing career and most important of all winning the hearts of goans all across the globe. For Sharon singing is her first passion. She has performed live on the professional stage, in tiatros, musical shows, gala events, beat shows besides performing on TV & Radio [Mumbai, Goa and Europe] and Films. As a singer, Sharon has her name mentioned in the “Guiness Book of World Records” for her participation in a konkani singing marathon in 2008 at Mangalore. She is a household name in Goa for her very popular songs like Moddgonvam Prasar, Utor, Piknik, Kalliz roddta Tuka, Pausacho Dis, etc. etc. Sharon has lent her inimitable voice to several Konkani audio albums of her home productions as well as for other producers. She has also lent her voice for albums in other languages like English, Hindi, Marathi and Portuguese. Sharon has also done playback singing for Konkani films and Videos. Sharon is a multi-talented artiste, a priceless asset to goa and the entertainment world of goan theatre and films. She is an actor par excellence having proved her acting prowess in every kind of roles she has played to date be it in tiatros, videos and films. She has written and directed her own konkani plays which have been quite popular with the audiences in goa. Sharon has developed a keen interest in making konkani films, especially in the departments of screenplay writing, acting, singing, directing and producing 35mm feature and short digital films. She has created history by being goa‟s first lady to act, sing, write, direct and produce a 35mm feature in konkani “Tum Kitem Kortolo Aslo?” [what would you do?”] in 2010, which again has so many firsts to its credit. This film was released and premiered in kuwait and has completed more than 130 screenings in Goa and Mangalore, and has aso been screened at 2 international film festivals viz. Marbella International Film Festival (Spain) & Addis International Film Festival (Ethiopia). “Cheddum…The Girl” is her second Konkani film which has been screened at several International Short Film Festivals and even won an Award”. She is currently working on directing and producing a video album of her popular songs. Sharon has recently written and released a handbook „Love Goa Speak Konkani‟ aimed at teaching conversational or spoken konkani to non-goans and globals goans. she has been recently conferred the “Mahila Kala Gaurav Puraskar 2015” by Kala Sadhna, Curchorem, for her achivements in the field of tiatros, konkani music and films. Sharon is also a columnist, having had her own columns in the local dailies Herald, Gomantak Times, Navhind Times and Goan Observer. “Chatting With Tiatrists” her column about tiatrists, was quite popular among the readers. Presently, Sharon is the Director of „Theatre Art & Cultural Training Institute, Goa‟ , an institute involved in training the youth of Goa in all aspects of theatre art, music and films, since the last 25 years.

World Goa Day Team 2015 – Rene Baretto, Tony Colaco and Debbie Santamaria. Wilson Mazarello also known as “Wilmix” is a science graduate (B.Sc) in Chemistry & Microbiology from the Bombay University. A student of St. Xaviers College (Mumbai) who also holds a Diploma in Business Management and a Diploma in International Marketing. He rose to be an Export Manager of an India based Pharmaceutical Company and has travelled extensively in countries of Asia, Africa and Europe. Beyond his academic qualifications in science and a management job , Wilson’s next love was konkani language and konkani tiatrs. This “next love” in the course of time became his “first love” as he finally sacrificed all for dedicating himself to the development and promotion of konkani language and konkani tiatrs. He began composing and singing konkani songs in village concerts in his native Velim, Salcete, Goa which then took him to become the President of Konkani Mandal in St Xavier’s College Bombay and later his entry into professional konkani tiatrs in 1970. His entry into professional konkani tiatrs brought in a revolution of sorts in the pattern of composing and singing trios and duets on the konkani stage. Highly intellectual compositions, blending voices , apt costumes and a true-to-life presentation was his hallmark. Spanning a stage career of approximately 45 plus years Wilson has done it all for promoting konkani language and konkani tiatrs. The most ‘in demand’ duet singer with Sharon Mazarello on “All India Radio” and “Doordarshan” to one of the leading konkani audio-album producers, a renowned producer/director of tiatrs Wilson is always in the forefront for promoting konkani in the roman script. Konkani songs such as “Kallo Kanvllo” , “C.I.D.-Maim”, “Absent Minded Professor”, “Sounsarant Deu Aila” , “Chint Munxea” “To osso kosso zalo” etc., composed by Wilson are sung in every Goan home even today. As a singer- actor Wilson has performed in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and Karnataka in India to Kuwait, Bahrain, Muscat, U.A.E. in the Middle East. Wilson and Sharon are the only tiatrists from Goa who have found mention in the Guinness Book of World Records for a world record set in “non-stop group singing” in Mangalore in 2008. Wilson has acted and done play-back singing for several konkani films and is a regular in konkani tiatrs even today. Wilson is now also involved in konkani film productions jointly with Sharon Mazarello. He has published two of his popular tiatros viz. “Durig” and “Sukhti-Bhorti” and written and published a book on the history of tiatr entitled “100 years of Konkani Tiatr” in English. Wilson is the only Goan to be awarded the Junior and Senior Fellowships by the Govt. of India for research work on konkani tiatr. He is the convenor of the “Romi Lipi Action Front” an organization actively working for including konkani in the roman script into the Official Language Act of Goa. He is a regular columnist in several newspapers of Goa promoting the cause of konkani language and konkani tiatr along with other social issues. Down the years Wilson has received several awards for his stage performances including the “Goa State Cultural Award-2013” by the Government of Goa but yet strongly believes that the value of a performing artist cannot be measured by the number of awards but rather by the audience appreciation an artist receives. Wilson believes that he has to now give back in return to the konkani stage a lot more for what he has received from it during the last 40 plus years. Wilson and Sharon are presently involved in running a theatre school in Margao , where they train the Goan youth in acting and singing thereby creating more and more new tiatrists for the konkani stage. World Goa Day 2015 Cooking is Love Made Visible Our TEAM‟s objectives is to promote World Goa Day within the wider Goan community, by reflecting on our Goan identity, taking pride in being Goan and uniting Goans all over the world, by celebrating our history, language, music, cultural heritage, traditions and not forgetting our GOAN cuisine. Talents are the gift that God gives to us…. What we make of our talents is our Gift back to Goa. We are delighted to feature yet another dynamic personality “Karen Ahmed” of KRAVINGS Food Adventures. World Goa Day Team 2015 – Rene Baretto, Tony Colaco and Debbie Santamaria. Karen started cooking at the age of 18 when she was in college and had a sudden surge of creativity. Armed with a cookbook and some raw chicken pieces, she proceed to make a baked chicken in a coconut sauce. It was a disaster! The chicken at the end of the cooking process was still raw and not edible. Determined to make it work, she threw the chicken into a frying pan together with some spices from her mom's spice cupboard and it was pure magic. From then on, her love for cooking and creating works of art just grew. She self taught and have had to rely on cookbooks, tv shows, youtube videos. She watched her mom like a hawk when she comes to visit. and often finds herself thinking about food during the day and about creating the next big food sensation for her family and friends to enjoy. She loves to entertain and will often plan menus way in advance. During the holidays, she affectionately refers to her kitchen as her 'test kitchen', and its here that she tries recipes and new ideas before unleashing it on to the world.

With her love for party planning, it seemed an obvious fit for her to appear on the reality TV show Come Dine With Me Canada in 2011 and that led to her blog - Kravings Blog. In May 2013 she started her own YouTube channel and started filming easy recipes like Butter Chicken. This was a great opportunity for her to learn and teach at the same time and she went on to make videos about Vindaloo and Shrimp Stuffed Papad. The video channel youtube.com/kravingsblog evolved to Kravings Food Adventures and focuses on taking a culinary journey around the world, from your own kitchen. Karen has also been an admin on the Goan Culinary Network, has appeared on Radio Mango twice and has also been a finalist on CBC's Recipe to Riches and more recently Jamie Oliver's Pressure Cooker where she got to cook with culinary heroes like Stefano Faita and DJ BBQ. She has also together with some really creative foodie friends formed Traditional Goan Foodies on facebook to keep our Goan cuisine and traditions alive

We are delighted to feature our Showman from Goa the dynamic and talented “Armando Gonsalves”. World Goa Day Team 2015 – Rene Baretto, Tony Colaco and Debbie Santamaria. Armando a true education is the education of the whole person, an education that encompasses intellectual, moral, emotional, social, athletic, and physical dimensions. Meeting with Armando Gonsalves provides a generously rich experience in conversation and one finds in his optimistic and non conformist wisdom, a passionate drive appealing to many across the nation, and now on the international fronts of all things music, education, charity and heritage. In his vision of uniting the home, music and heritage, he begins each day with honoring the past and ends it with inspiring the future . Armando‟s association with charity work for Tsunami victims, for the Siolim Orphanage, the National Association for the Blind, the Campal Creek Revival project, the Restoration of the Mermaid at the Mermaid Garden in Panjim, and his devotion to his own charity organization – Goa ForGiving, much is said in the press of this man who reaches out to society in his own special way by instilling a sense of unity, respect and goodwill through celebration too. Armando‟s journey of life is seen as a path that takes him through construction to media production and to conservation of heritage homes to the promotion of jazz culture in Goa. Whether it is working with marketing or design or negotiations or just anything else, it is the concept behind it that excites Armando. And through his concept of providing information via many workshops in music, he is able to introduce great musician teachers to young minds. On the forefront is the dedication of his home to students from across Goa who drop by to use the grand space to learn photography, theatre, journalism and advertising. We are delighted to feature our very own young and talented musician and producer “Louis J. Pinto“ (Gumby). World Goa Day Team 2015 – Rene Baretto, Tony Colaco and Debbie Santamaria. Louis J. Pinto, also knows as Gumby, a child prodigy percussionist and a renowned name in the Pakistani music industry. A goan born and raised in Karachi Pakistan. Louis grew up around a very vibrant but small community, which he believes gave him that space to explore and sketch a bigger picture for himself as a musician Louis has been a very integral part in shaping the Pakistani music scene since the past two decades. Bringing his skill, creativity and communication to his fellow musicians and audiences all over. He states, it were the difficult times that shaped up his motto to “learn to grow where you‟re planted”. With lack of information at the time and limited resources with instruments, he believes it taught him to be focused and determined. He was seen and heard playing music is small music outfits like the church choir, hotel lobbies and wedding bands during the late eighties/early nineties. Louis started touring the world and session playing for pop/rock bands since the age of thirteen. Moving on from live performances, Louis got an opportunity to put down his music on tape for the first time in the mid nineties. Since then he has never looked back in his recording career. Despite the lack of recording studios in the country at the time, Louis started out a trend of recording live drums in mainstream music. Having over twenty albums to his credit and several television performances over the years, Louis is undoubtedly the most highly recorded musician in the country. He has worked with the who‟s who of the music industry and has also extended his horizons to other parts of the world. From hotel lobbies, to festivals to album recordings, Louis has always been open to exploring ideas, concepts and learning opportunities. He believes that this gift was merely to inspire. Louis now runs a recording facility where he not only works on his own productions, but also welcomes musicians from different parts of the world and encourages the younger generation to come and experience the world of music and capture it….. I am Vasco Alvares also known as Vasquito. I have been in the food industry for 16 years and I have worked in five star hotels in Goa and the cruise liners in Miami. After returning from abroad I ran successful restaurants serving Goan, indo Portuguese and fusion cuisine that blended local flavours with the the flavours I experienced on my travels like Jamaican, Italian, Mexican, French and oriental. Goan food however has become my passion after participating in international food festivals like the Arts alive in South Africa, and the Lusofonia food and cultural festival in Macau, where I showcased Goan cuisine. I was inspired by the chef of other nations, by their absolute love for their local cuisine. Goan food in Goa is dying and I have made it my mission to salvage whatâ&#x20AC;&#x;s left and try to rejuvenate it by infusing new ideas into it

Before sharing the recipe I would like to correct some misconceptions. The spelling is not recheado, rechard, rechad or any other. Recheio is to stuff, thus anything stuffed is recheiado. This is how I make it Ingredients 4 Mackerel Salt to marinate - Lime - Oil to fry For the stuffing 6 kashmiri chillies soaked overnight in 200 ml of goan vinegar 4 cloves - 1 stick of cinnamon - 6 pepper corns Â˝ tsp of cumin - A small ball of tamarind soaked in warm water and the pulp strained - 1 tbsp sugar - 6 cloves of garlic 1 inch of ginger - 2 chopped onions - Salt to taste 3 tbsp of oil to cook Method Slit the mackerels close to the bone on either side, creating pockets Rub salt and lime inside the slits and on the fish Make a paste of the ginger and garlic and chillies in the same vinegar, adding a little water if required for grinding Roast the dry spices and grind to a fine powder Fry the onions in the oil till a little caramelized, then add the paste and cook till the oil starts separating, add the spice powder, sugar and tamarind and cook for another 5 minutes. Adjust the seasoning. Spoon the mixture into the mackerels and fry in hot oil so the skin get crispy and the flesh remains succulent. Serve with a tomato and onion salad

½ kg fish (firm fleshy fish) 1 medium onion - 1 medium tomato 6 cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons desiccated coconut 2 tablespoon poppy seeds 1 tablespoon sesame seeds 2-3 tablespoons red chilli powder (Kashmiri chillies) 1 teaspoon turmeric powder - 1 tablespoon cumin powder 1 cup coconut milk - ¼ cup Oil + 2 tablespoons 1 sprig of curry leaves 2 medium raw mangoes quartered or 4 tablespoons of vinegar Salt to taste Heat 2 tablespoons oil sauté onions, add tomato and garlic, cook for a few minutes till tomatoes soften keep aside to cool slightly. Blend coconut, poppy and sesame seeds to a fine paste, use as little water possible. Add saute‟d onion mix, blend to a smooth paste. In the same pan add spices and ¼ cup water and the oil, let the spices bubble a little and fry till oil separates from the masala, add the blended paste and fry for a few minutes, add curry leaves and salt and 1 glass of water, (if using vinegar add now) let this simmer on a low flame for 2 minutes. Add fish, and raw mango, cook covered over medium flame for 3-4 minutes, add coconut milk and stir to combine, leave on low flame for further 1 minute.

Alexyz graduated from St. Xavier‟s College, did a course in Advertising and Public Relations and joined an advertising company, as a copywriter. Even though there was a lot of glamour and pay in the job, Alexyz was not satisfied with the kind of work, and left the job a year later. After travelling for a year Alexyz eventually settled in Goa. Alexyz worked in schools at Calangute for seven years. Cartooning is my passion says Alexyz and does it with expertise and ease, be it designing and drawing cartoon ads and cartoon strips for newspapers and magazines; or drawing caricatures. With thoughts constantly sizzling in Alexyz mind, he has showcased his love for Goa and Goans through his cartoons, and has been applauded for his superb creations by people throughout the world. Alexyx initiated the „Festival of Plants and Flowers‟ and rejuvenated „Sao Joao Boat Parade‟ which is popular not only in the village of Siolim, but throughout the Goa. Alexyz got his inspiration from Mario Miranda and the inborn love for cartooning beckoned him to get seriously involved in practicing and nurturing his talent. Alexyz has contributed his sports cartoons to the national magazine „Sports Week‟. Since then there was no turning back. He made his mark as a cartoonist while working with Herald in 1983. At that time Herald was an upcoming newspaper and they had taken up the issue of Konkani as a state language. Alexyz was given ample space for his daily cartoons, and he made the best out of it. Alexyz received recognition not only in Goa, but amongst Goans spread across the world due to his witty comic strips related to the issue. Alexyz first book on sports cartoons was published in 1982 during the Asian Games. „Sportoons‟ India‟s first book of sport toons to be published. „Howzzat ! A Century of Cricket Cartoons‟, a similar kind of a book happened during the Reliance World Cup in 1987. Later he drifted away from sports and began focusing on more serious aspects in the state. His latter books „Goa :Paradise Lost‟, Goa… Goan… Goaing… Gone?‟ and “Humor Goez” are a collection of cartoons showcasing the issues rocking Goa. There are chances that he will get a few more books published in the near future since he claims to have matter which will suffice four more books besides the editions of the previous ones. Alexyz exhibitions made him travel the world over. He was invited to put up an exhibition at the House of Commons London, Lisbon - Portugal, Toronto – Canada, San Francisco – USA, Auckland – New Zealand, Melbourne & Adelaide – Australia, Kuwait and Dubai – UAE besides several exhibitions in Goa and Mumbai. Alexyz is actively involved in organizing art workshops for children over the past couple of years. „Creative Funshops‟ as he chooses to name them, is aimed at making children inclined towards art through the various things they learn to make at the workshops. He also has to his credit of organizing „Alexyz-e-os-Amigos‟ which was a huge success. Talented Alexyz resides in Siolim. He considers cartooning an excellent career option for youngsters because of the increase in the number of newspapers and periodicals in Goa which were not available during his time. Alexyz says what one needs to succeed in any career is fanaticism; one needs to travel a lot to learn new things and experience life at its best. Unfolding the Package of Talents - After high school he went to St. Xavier’s Mapusa where he did his Higher Secondary School in Accounts, Auditing & Taxation under the Vocational Stream. It was here that he took up NSS (National Service Scheme) when he met his Guide and Mentor Shri Deelip Dhargalkar, Professor & NSS Programme Officer, who noticed and promoted many of his talents, both at state and national levels. Recent Achievements - His first achievement came in 1998, when he was awarded certificate of merit at the all Goa Child Art Competition organized by the Goa College of Art on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee Celebration. In 2004 his group was awarded the 2nd Place for St. Xavier's College while participating in the Folk Dance Competition at the State Youth Festival organized by the Government of Goa, at the hands of Dr. Susana de Souza - Director of Youth Affairs. In 2004 his group secured 1st Place for St. Xavier's College while participating in the Inter College Street Play competition organized by the Zantye Brothers Educational Foundation's Narayan Zantye College of Commerce- Bicholim Goa. AL JERRY BRAGANZA, FATHER OF KONKANI CINEMA By Walter Menezes Ever since the day when news appeared in the media that „one hardened reel‟ of the first full-length Konkani motion picture „Mogacho Aunddo‟ produced and directed by AL Jerry Braganza has finally been found and is presently being „treated‟ at the L‟Immagine Ritrovata, a restoration laboratory in Bologna, Italy, there has been renewed interest and excitement about this film. AL Jerry was also the lead actor in the film which was released in 1950. Author of Konknni Cholchitram, Isidore Dantas, an avid collector of Konkani film memorabilia, writes about „Mogacho Aunddo‟ in this book, „The film was screened at Dashrat Cinema, Mapusa on 24th April 1950 and simultaneously in Mumbai at Rivoli and Star theatres in Matunga and Mazagaon respectively.‟ Incidentally, it was Dantas who handed over the 300ft of film to Nachom-ia Kumpasar director Bardroy Barretto who then handed it over to Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, film-maker, archivist and founder director of the Film Heritage Foundation based in Mumbai for restoration. In an article appearing in Mid-day, Barretto says that “Dantas is positive that he will find the remaining reels of Mogacho Aunddo somewhere in Africa (like Goa, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Príncipe and Equatorial Guinea, too were Portuguese colonies) or in Macau (an erstwhile Portuguese colony).” While Willy Goes, writer and lecturer at Goa College of Art is also optimistic that other „lost‟ reels of „Mogacho Aunddo‟ will be found and we will get to see „Goa as it existed in the fifties‟, Bosco Dias, a resident of Motivaddo, Majorda recalls seeing the film with his family members at Olympia Hall close to present-day Cine Lata, Margao when he was very young. “In fact, I had never seen a film before so I was all excited. I still remember the hero…I think in the film his name was Abel…furiously writing love letters to his beloved. And this other scene where he fools around with the fisher-women with baskets on their heads.” Call it strange coincidence or otherwise, but even before this news of the „precious reel‟ could appear in the press, Dalgado Konknni Akademi had already embarked on a project to release a „special cover‟ to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the first Konkani film and honour the Father of the Konkani Cinema in his home-town, Mapusa. While preparing the spadework to present the proposal before the Office of the Postmaster General, Goa Region, Willy Goes made available a copy of „50 Years of Konkani Cinema‟, a well-documented and informative magazine edited by Andrew Greno Viegas. Published on the occasion of 50 years of Konkani cinema in 2000, it contains details about the Konkani films produced, those that never took-off and those which were abandoned. Andrew Greno Viegas, a hard-core Konkani film enthusiast had lot of plans including a book on the history of Konkani cinema of which he makes a mention in the magazine. However, the book never saw the light of day. Andrew died young and his friends and well-wishers still remember him and mourn the loss of a quiet but dedicated son of the Konkani „kuttumb‟. This article will make use of Andrew Greno‟s „50 Years of Konkani Cinema‟ to throw light on the life and achievements of AL Jerry Braganza, the Father of Konkani Cinema. Baptized as Antonio Lawrence Jerry Braganza, he later tweaked his name to AL Jerry Braganza, probably to make it more appealing to his would-be fans. School, Parra. Right from his childhood days AL Jerry showed keen interest in singing and acting and was good at „yodelling‟ too! In 1940 he went to Bombay and joined the „Bombay Tutorial College‟. For sometime he worked at I.E.M.E. Workshop, Colaba and then joined the Indian News Parade (now The Films Division) as telephone operator. He later moved to Geeta Pictures & Studios located at Magir Mahul Road, Chembur and thereafter became the Chief Controller of Production for Ramesh Vyas and Vishwa Bharati Films. Later, under the banner of ETICA (Exchange Talkies of India, China & Africa) and based on Dioguinho D‟Mello‟s novella „Mogachi Vodd‟, AL Jerry Braganza began to work on what would become, in the days to come, a milestone in the history of Konkani cinema. The „muhurat‟ ceremony was held on 31 July 1949 in the presence of Fr. Macario Pereira and „shooting‟was held in various places of Goa like Campal, the lighthouse at Aguada, river Mandovi, Calangute beach and the area in Altinho hill around Liceu building. Nine months later, the first Konkani film „Mogacho Aunddo‟ was ready for release! Many years later and before the launch of his second film „Sukhachem Sopon‟, in a broadcast on All India Radio on 21st June 1966, AL Jerry Braganza had this to say about the „shooting‟ of the first Konkani film, „People looked at us in great surprise as if we were aliens, people from another world! A Times of India report dated 07.09.1950 informs us that AL Jerry had secured the sole rights in India „to film the forthcoming Exposition‟ and that he „plans to make a lengthy documentary depicting the sacerdotal ceremonies in connection with the unique religious event, as well as the picturesque scenes and historic sights of Goa in four versions Hindi, English, Portuguese and Konkani.‟ AL Jerry Braganza who died on 08.01.1990 had also planned a biopic on „Custoba the Great‟ and Robin Vaz was roped in to play the role of Custoba. But the film was later abandoned. On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the screening of the first Konkani film „Mogacho Aunddo‟, a „special cover‟ will be released by Dalgado Konknni Akademi to commemorate this day.
