SAN FRANCISCO
night life San Francisco’s nightlife is as diverse as San Francisco itself, and each district’s selection of bars, clubs and lounges has its own distinct flavor. For electronic music clubs, hip-hop or chill art lounges, head to San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, while the artsy Mission district is primed for everything from dive bar hopping to intimate dance space, an alternative to the city’s larger clubs. On the flipside, the Marina District sports decidedly slicker (though no less debaucherous) bars. Gay-friendly bars and clubs exist all over the city, with the Castro, SoMa, and Polk Street areas leading the way. San Francisco’s North Beach is open until the wee hours with neon strip joints and cool hideaway bars, and rowdy clubs. It’s all available here with SanFrancisco. com’s district-by-district guide.

he Village of the Arts (villageofthearts.com) in Bradenton, near Sarasota on the Gulf coast, is a district for art lovers where folk art commingles with pop surrealism and good eats. Since the late 1990s, city officials have been working to gentrify what was then a downtrodden neighborhood. The effort
succeeded. On 42 acres, the Village is now hailed as the Gulf Coast’s largest artist-in-residence community. Throw in brightly festooned 1920s and ’30s architecture — specifically some 40 cottages that perform double duty as galleries and residences — and this artsy niche is an eclectic and engaging must-see. to parenting, “father” isn’t usually the first word that comes to mind. Sadly, it’s not the second one either.

While out to dinner with work colleagues, Lucy noticed her in-laws at a nearby table and walked over to say hello. After chatting for a moment, the father-in-law asked Lucy who was babysitting her kids. “Your son,” she replied. “And he’s not babysitting.” When my wife, Brandy, shared that anecdote—courtesy of her BFF—I was just beginning a three-week stint as a stay-at-home dad. There had been a few consecutive days here and there, but never before had I taken care of our sons, Jackson, 5, and Tanner, 3, for an extended period of time while Brandy worked. I had all manner of father-son activity scheduled. Frolicking through beach surf. Running through sprinklers. Napping in a hammock. (May I recommend the Greeting Card Guide to Parenting?) During those three weeks, I was repeatedly asked how the babysitting was going. Who can blame them? Nobody uses “father” as a verb, and if you do, you’re either in a DNA laboratory or a Dickens novel. Mother? Now there’s an action verb. A quick look at the Merriam-Webster
Changing that perception will require a lot of heavy lifting by us fathers, as we’re in a hole that’s only getting deeper. Last year the National Fatherhood Initiative released The One Hundred Billion Dollar Man, a study detailing how much the federal government spends every year assisting father-absent families ($99.8 billion to be exact). I certainly feel I’m doing my part, but that doesn’t mean everything is by the book. It’s easy to see why father and babysitter are used interchangeably: Both contingents often overlook some of the nuts-and-bolts aspects of child care. During my term as “manny,” food groups were skipped (it’s not you, whole grains, it’s me), and the TV was always tuned in to the most age-appropriate channel. (Fatal Attraction has a number of great life lessons: forgiveness, resolving conflict, how to braise rabbit.) Moms, on the other hand, don’t miss a beat. In fact, I sincerely believe one of the side effects of pregnancy is a Ph.D. Save for one surreal meltdown (which included a balloon popping and two violently weeping boys wearing last Easter’s bunny ears), we had a

Usually? Googling “mother” generates 312 million search results. “Father” generates 270 million. This statistic says what we all know: When it comes to parenting, Mom is CEO, Dad is Regional Assistant Director of Operations. That hierarchy, inherited from countless generations, is the crux of nearly every fight Brandy and I have. I feel like your employee, I say, after filling out one of her vacationday request forms. 70

blast together. We turned our local strip mall into a theme park. We played with puppies, shot hoops, observed lizards and tarantulas, and practiced golf on a putting green. Thank goodness Petland and Sports Authority are next door to each other. What I learned in those three weeks is that left to their own devices, mothers and fathers will care for kids differently. Sometimes it’s easier for one parent to make all the decisions. Dictatorship is simple. Democracy is complicated. Brandy’s method of parenting — nutrient-rich and cognitively stimulating — would earn her raves from any parenting watchdog group. Her instincts, and more importantly, her execution, are impeccable. My method—R-rated thrillers, loitering in retail outlets— would earn fewer checkmarks, but it

Police are investigating a potential hate crime and vandalism in two separate attacks against houses of worship that happened over the weekend on Staten Island. If you are in possession of the Holy Bible, I advise you to have it within your reach. To answer this question, it is important to back ourselves up with the Word. Please try to understand what Jesus is saying here: “As for the person who hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.” John 12:47. The Lord goes on to say that whatever measure we use to judge others; the same will be used against us. What could be clearer? If we, as Christians, take it upon ourselves to impose our standards on others, we must expect to be just as harshly treated. Here is another scriptural reference I think is especially relevant to you and me: “For all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” Romans 3:23. But wait, It gets better. Read on. “Yet now God in His gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus, who has freed us by taking away our sins.” Romans 3:24

Christ. If you are have not heard of an incident where a woman was caught committing adultery and was sentenced to be stoned to death (as religious law prescribed during that time), you need to read about this in John 8:1-11. This woman was rescued by Jesus Christ. All He said was: “If anyone of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” John 8:7. Guess what? A multitude of people with stones in their hands all walked away and left this woman untouched. Jesus had a hard time with hypocrisy, and so do I. Indeed, I have found that both I and my fellow Christians are the worst hypocrites. We are no better than the Pharisees whom Jesus Christ of Nazareth

Transportation
Day Arrives
I prayed to Him. I asked God to guide, comfort and make me whole again.
When my husband faced federal charges for possession of drugs in 2003, the detention center became his temporary “home.”

hen my husband faced federal charges for possession of drugs in 2003, the detention center became his temporary “home.” My children and I were allowed to visit him twice each week, and the twenty-mile drive became second nature to us. After sentencing, our attorney explained, he would be transported to a federal prison where he would serve out the remainder of his term. Last night, and years later, I visited the detention center. When I arrived, the center’s officials told me that my husband had been transported. I felt positive about this, since he would be released from nerve-wracking tension of his “holding pattern.” He would get on with serving out his sentence and enroll in rehabilitation courses to end his drug problems. But yesterday’s story is not finished. Even though it was not a scheduled visiting day, I felt an overwhelming compulsion to see my husband that morning. I took the children, and we had a nice visit and told him we’d be in tomorrow.
62 / FAHF MAGAZINE /wwwfahf.net
On the drive over, however, God had talked to me. He told me to explain to the children that he may not be there. The children told me that they knew transport day would come eventually, so I tried to explain that their Daddy’s leaving would be a positive experience for him and fur us. The sooner he left us, I said, he sooner he could come home again. My middle child, aged six, took the news harder than the other children. She didn’t believe
me. She didn’t believe we would all share a positive experience once her Daddy was transported to prison. She was afraid that that we wouldn’t get to visit him anymore. She had looked forward to seeing her Daddy twice a week so she could tell him the latest news in her life. So when she was told that her father was gone, she collapsed in tears. Comforting her came naturally to me, and eventually her tears subsided. But driving home, my own comfort faced a
stiff test. I tried not to lose control of my emotions. I tried not to let the children see how upset I was. And for the first time in our marriage, I felt completely cut off from my husband. His loss hit hard. I needed him. I needed to see him. I thought only he could replenish my spirit so I could face another day. In the past, I had found that being in his presence enabled me help me make decisions about the children. He was even strong enough to hear me vent over how everything was just too hard at times. He always understood and never lost his patience. My tears, questions and occasional outbursts were comforted. But now he was gone and for weeks, I wouldn’t even know where to send him a letter. I couldn’t sleep that night. My loving husband – where was he? This morning I told myself to turn my troubles over to God. I prayed to Him. I asked God to guide, comfort and make me whole again. Suddenly, I felt my husband’s fear. It was an unnatural feeling and I couldn’t understand it. So I prayed to God again. I asked Him to free my husband from his fear and
replace it with peace. As I prayed, a sudden calm came into my heart. I knew God had answered my prayer and that my husband would find the strength to carry on, that he would find the “peace which passeth all understanding.” In that moment, transportation day took on a new meaning for me. Even in the midst of uncertainty and restlessness, I knew, God still watches over us. He gives us peace to cope with each day and restores our soul for the next day. The trials ahead of us are long and no one goes through life without them. To find peace, we must hold God in our hearts for His presence is all we need. His presence will comfort us all. I hope what I learned today will help you. I hope that you, too, will know that God alone can give peace. Once he puts peace in our hearts, we can face any trial. “What we don’t know is so much bigger than we are.”
Brain Research
A Haitian proverb.
O By RICHARD THIEME
h, how I wish that reviewing a book like this were simple and straightforward! That would mean we live in a world of transparency, government accountability to citizens, easy access to sources, primary sources willing to go on the record, and data trails that lead readers to those same sources so everyone can see for themselves. But alas, we do not live in such a world. Mind Wars: Brain Research and National Defense by Jonathan D. Moreno is a broad but necessarily incomplete overview of neuroscience, nanotechnology and related areas applied to the arts of war, with an examination of ethical issues raised by this work, all considered in a historical context by a scholar who has researched the field. The key to decoding the book, however, is on page 4 of the introduction. “I am no loose cannon,” writes Jonathan D. Moreno, Ph. D., the Emilie Davie and Joseph S. Kornfeld Professor and Director of the Center for Biomedical Ethics at the University of Virginia. “I am deeply entrenched in the non-threatening, even boring,

academic establishment. I’ve taught at major research universities, hold an endowed chair at an institution not known as a hotbed of radicalism “ and on the disclaimer goes, a plea to the reader to recognize that the author is no kook, no “conspiracy theorist,” but a respectable, conventional man. Moreno sounds those notes again, on p. 107, for example, when he states that he has considerable “experience with government-on the staffs of presidential advisory committees, in [giving] congressional testimony, and so forth.” Those qualifications define the subtext of this work and in many ways the subtext is the primary content. They also suggest one reason why the exploration of the frontiers of military research and development and the penetration of the military-industrial-academic-scientific-media complex is so difficult these days. Insiders know but can’t tell; outsiders can tell, but don’t often know, and when they do know, ridicule and other forms of disinformation can make what they know seem like fanciful speculation. So they err on the side of extreme caution. Jonathan Moreno is qualified, without a doubt, to survey what is in the public domain about neuroweapons and diverse applications of numerous branches of research that
blur the distinctions between government, military, and medical, technological and scientific research, and he is also qualified to discuss the ethical implications of this research. So why does he need to insist that he is qualified? Because black budget (clandestinely funded) science and technology is so large a percentage of all scientific R&D and so hidden from public view that even to approach the subject is to enter a force field of distortion and paranoia. One might as well explore UFOs or time travel-domains of actual research, in fact, but which must be discussed with a wink or, as Moreno’s disclaimers indicate, the trumpeting of one’s credentials, above all credentials of character-respectability and conventionality-so that one is not marginalized by the mere fact that one has chosen to explore the domain. Inevitably, researchers of exotic technologies experience a condition called “strangeness,” a kind of cognitive dissonance, and have to push against it to reestablish clear boundaries.
B
Why has this come about?
ecause a national security state has evolved since World War 2 and is now the water in which we all swim. Moreno describes the history of that evolution and shows that a great deal of research, including research in the behavioral sciences, has been determined by a perception of military necessity. Access to the research is determined by

ot too many things, you might say. But although everyone agrees that a cup is a common household term, no one can identify the cup of all cups. In other words, there is no single cup that stands for all cups and no single description of what a cup does. To illustrate this idea even further, cups come in many sizes, shapes, colors and designs. Not one person can remember the first time he or she saw a cup, held a cup, used a cup or perhaps broke a cup. In the Bible, we find the word cup used in different ways: In the figurative sense, it stands for what is held in the sufferings and afflictions that come upon a person or people. As Christians, we readily recall the words of Jesus in His Garden of Gethsemane prayer, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless, not my will, but thy will be done.” In this quote, it is clearly understood that in every life there is a cup filled with suffering and that the Lord may or may not fill that cup for His

own reasons. Another example is found in the words of the Psalmist, as in the Shepherd’s Psalm (23): “My cup runneth over.” This refers to God’s abundant blessings and favors. The New Testament also instructs us to see that the cup of our life is full and overflowing with goodness, with the life of Christ Himself and with the presence of His holy spirit. The cup of blessing is a term derived
I have a silver baby cup that is tarnished from age. Although this also suggests to me that I will eventually age, get wrinkly and gray-haired like my tarnished cup, it doesn’t change the original blessing of friendship I received when first receiving it. In this vein, we may draw more inferences from the term cup. “Demitasse” cups, for example, are small and do not hold much in quantity. But the quality of its contents can be as valuable or of even greater value than a large cup. Imagine a cup sprayed with gold paint. It would bear the appearance of richness. There are people who desire luxuries and affluence but never give of themselves in useful service. Their lives at first appear to be attractive but they are lacking in depth and substance. For this reason, a Christians should see his-herself as a clear glass cup: whatever is in it, one can readily see. If it is dirty, or has nothing in it, one can see that too. Some cups are jokingly made as half cups. At first they appear to be complete, but they aren’t. They fool those who see it as being complete. Unfortunately, too many people are like this. They put on a good front, so to speak. They

That we are most familiar with the cup as a mere container used for a practical purpose is a common assumption. But now, let’s use the term cup to encompass life: in other words, my life as a cup; your life as a cup, both filled with His spirit, which enables us to fulfill our lives in accordance with God’s great plan.

Some cups have a broken handle that renders them useless for their intended purpose, while others have cracks in the drinking portion that leak. Sometimes our cracked “cups” (our lives) can be mended by the touch of the Master’s forgiveness and Christian friends’ helpfulness. private cars or “gypsy” taxis, which people perceive to be cheaper but can charge up to $75. New York has the 15th highest average fare out of 23 American cities, according to Schaller Consulting, which researches urban transportation issues. When the commission last boosted taxi prices in 2004, the base price went up 50 cents to $2.50. When not idling, the meter charges 40 cents every fifth of a mile. The wait-time hike was necessary to compensate for higher gas prices, said Bruce Schaller, the firm’s principal consultant, adding that several cities have also upped fares.
The new taxi fare hike means the average ride will cost a buck more. Here’s how the costs work out: ■ The waiting: The city Taxi and Limousine Commission approved an increase in the cost of “wait time” for cabs stuck in traffic, from 20 cents per minute to 40 cents. ■ The bottom line: The change should increase the cost of an average cab ride by $1 — without the tip. It’s the first jump in wait time since 1990. ■ Flat rate: The TLC also voted for a flat fare of $45 on trips from Manhattan to Kennedy Airport — the same rate already charged for the trip from the Queens airport into Manhattan. to witness the flag-raising amid the neat rows of thousands of white marble crosses and stars of David marking the graves of U.S. servicemen and women fallen in the Allied invasion of Normandy. On June 6, 1944, Allied forces led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, on “D-Day,” beginning the liberation of German-occupied Western Europe during World War II. A full day of ceremonies — including fireworks, concerts and marches — was taking place across Normandy in honor of the more than 150,000 troops, mainly U.S., British and Canadian, who risked or gave their lives in the invasion. “The tide has turned. The free men of the world are marching together to victory!” Eisenhower said in an historic address after the invasion was launched.

WASHINGTON — Women may be able to start training as Army Rangers by mid-2015 and as Navy SEALs a year later under plans set to be announced by the Pentagon that would slowly bring women into thousands of combat jobs, including those in elite special operations forces. Details of the plans were obtained by The Associated

They call for requiring women and men to meet the same physical and mental standards to qualify for certain infantry, armor, commando and other front-line positions across the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel reviewed the plans and has ordered the services to move ahead. The move, expected to be announced Tuesday, follows revelations of a startling

Wall Street payouts head for 3-year low
‘09 will be ‘a massacre’ By Peter Pae Business Now Staff Writer
T
he mortgage crisis will hit the city’s financial workers where it hurts next month, when investment banks hand out bonus checks that will be the lowest since 2004. The average payout expected— of almost $104,000—is about twice what the average New York city household makes in a year. But it is well off the high of $137,000 set in 2006. The worst is yet to come. With mortgage-related write-offs continuing into the first half of next year, bankers may be looking at a whopping 60% cut in their bonus
checks come Christmas 2008, analysts said. “From the perspective of these guys, it’s going to be a massacre,” said executive recruiter Alan Johnson. Profit at American Airlines, the nation's largest carrier, jumped more than tenfold to $175 million in the third quarter while Delta Air Lines, the thirdlargest, said net income quadrupled to $220 million compared with the year-earlier period. Profit would have been higher if not for rising fuel costs. The results elated investors but fueled anger among consumer groups.
Lehman bucks trend By Peter Pae Business Now Staff Writer

Call it luck or call it foresight, but Lehman Brothers Holdings may be about to bypass some bigger investment banks in stature. The firm’s announcement yesterday of a 7 percent increase in fourthquarter profit showed it has avoided the mortgage underwriting excesses that have traumatized most of its peers.
Analysts credited Lehman chief Richard Fuld for keeping his firm focused on trading and merger advice. “Pound for pound, Fuld is outperforming Blankfein,” said Credit Suisse analyst Susan Katzke, referring to Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein. Lehman shares jumped $7 to $69.45 after the firm released its results, which included a 16% rise in quarterly revenue, to $15.3 billion.

■ THE ECONOMY
Fed trims forecast for 2008 By Tony Carter Business Now Staff Writer
CEO Fuld says profits may rise another 30% next year
The Federal Reserve yesterday lowered its forecast for the economy in 2008, saying gross domestic product could grow by as little as 1.6%. That is sharply lower than the minimum 2.5% growth rate the Fed was forecasting this summer, and raised hope among investors for a late-year
interest-rate cut. The results elated investors but fueled anger among consumer groups. "I'm aghast there isn't more public outcry over this," said Kate Hanni, president of the Coalition for an Airline Passengers' Bill of Rights, a consumer advocacy group based in Napa Valley. "They're making money hand over fist at the expense of passengers."

A l l o w m e t o b e h o n e s t f o r A m o m e n t. Miami intimidates the heck out of me — and nope, I’m not from out of town. I’m talking about the outrageous number of beautiful people strolling around beautiful places in beautiful clothes. I’m not just referring to the youngins either. A slender, sun-kissed, cocktail-dress-clad fellow diner at a haute restaurant is as likely to be 45 (or 55) as she is to be 25. They all seem to have the inside scoop on all the best restaurants (I think the majority are in the Design District) and boutiques (C. Madeleine’s vintage shop, hands down) and home stores (anything on 125th Street in North Miami near the Museum of Contemporary Art).

But you know what? There’s no need to be intimidated. These folks know about as much as you and I — and what they do know that we don’t, we can easily find out. So we went exploring new spaces that seem designed specifically for those of us who, how shall I say this, only look 25. They’re sexy and sophisticated with a timeless appeal; restaurants, lounges or rooftop gardens that practically beg for a cocktail and a sunset. Many are in a crop of fresh new hotels, which isn’t surprising when you consider the city is known for its innovative hotel concepts. But don’t worry. Overnight stays are not required — though you may want to book one once you catch a glimpse of these beauties. — ANA CONNERY
From an elevator full of surprises to a men’s room that even the ladies will want a peek at, a crop of fresh spaces gives new meaning to the phrase “haute summer nights.”
thEy Say “50” IS a MILEStoNE
At Club 50 inside downtown Brickell’s new Viceroy hotel, the number refers to the floor level, which provides one of the best features of this place: the view. Walk into the L-shaped lounge, and you’ll notice more brass than you’ve seen since the ’80s. The Kelly Wearstlerdesigned space (she’s the knockout judge on Bravo’s Top Design) boasts her signature hint of Hollywood glam, but with a Miami edge. Sunny yellow-leather seats with backs that look like shells surround low tables for those who want to snack on tapas-style dishes heavy on raw fish. Walls are covered in latticework and columns in potted plants, hinting at the garden space that’s just around the corner — where the real drama is. I wish I could say the long and skinny pool
surrounded by marble was the centerpiece, but as lovely as it is, it pales in comparison to the view of Biscayne Bay and South Beach to the east and downtown cityscapes to the north and west. Vines drape Romanesque columns, giving this alfresco space a European feel. THE MOOD Come early and you’ll find a light, lively after-work crowd that clears out by 8-ish, followed by late-nighters who watch starry skies from poolside loungers and listen to good music. DON’T MISS Men’s-room urinals are set against floor-to-ceiling windows that add a new dimension to the idea of taking care of business. (Oh, how I wish I could tell you I scored a chance to peek at these.) viceroymiami.com — AC

Then comes the final third. It’s a nightmare and probably not the sort of nightmare first-time director Gil Kenan intended. The film explodes into the kind of “Please stop!”
Come back, “Cars.”
I was too harsh. Your adrenalized platitudes are nothing compared to the monstrosity that is “Monster House.” The picture is yet another entry in the if-you-animate-it-they-will come (“they” being parents and kids) summer sweepstakes. Not only are “Cars”“Over the Hedge” and “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties” still hanging around, but the next few weeks bring “The Ant Bully” and “Barnyard.”
However, this isn’t even cuddly animals/cars/ bugs animation. Executive producer Robert Zemeckis has apparently decreed “Monster House” be made in the same creepy style as “The Polar Express” (which he directed), wherein the actors are so faithfully replicated you keep wondering why didn’t they just go with live action instead of this icky, offputting approach. At any rate, “Monster House” is essentially a teched-up haunted house story about a
decrepit wreck of a house squatting ominously on an otherwise sunny suburban street. Things (kites, tricycles) -- and eventually people -- disappear when they get too close. Which may -- or may not -- explain why the crumbling edifice is zealously guarded by a misanthropic geezer named Nebbercracker (voice by Steve Buscemi). Everybody in the neighborhood figures Nebbercracker is just a cantankerous old man and his house just a poster-child for tear-downs everywhere.
