ituated in Poole, one of the UK’s most sought-after coastal locations, this 1930s detached house was ripe for modernisation. “It was rundown; little had been done to it in 30 years,” says Tony Holt of Tony Holt Design, who was tasked by the new owners – a father and son team – to design a scheme to increase the footprint. Tony responded with a scheme which would not only double the habitable space – from just over 110m2 to around 232m2 – but bring the dated property into the 21st century. To the rear, a white-rendered single storey extension would house that staple of modern life — an open plan kitchen/living area. The entire back wall would host an expanse of sliding doors, creating a real connection with newly landscaped garden. However, the street-facing front elevation would be subject to the most radical transformation. A series of protruding extensions – “geometric shapes,” as Tony describes – would allow an attached garage to be introduced, in addition to lending a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. Timber cladding, white render and copper panels would be used to finish the exterior. Although encased within a contemporary shell, the former structure can still be read. The scheme was met with delight from the owners – who went on to project manage the work – and a planning application was submitted to the local authority. It was duly granted. Permission was also given for raising the ridge height – in line with neighbouring properties – meaning the existing roof could be lifted off and a steel frame second storey added. The glazed gable end of this second floor now provides far-

reaching harbour views, with folding sliding doors opening up to a terrace. The whiterendered wall below extends to form a parapet around the terrace, with a glass balcony above for safety. Large aluminium frame windows allow light to pour into the freshly decorated interiors. But tinted glazing has been specified to lend privacy on this street-facing façade, without impeding on the views. When work began, little was left of the exterior shell, with the exception of three structural walls. The newly transformed house has also been enhanced by a smart landscaping scheme. The former front lawn has become a low-maintenance drive, providing plentiful parking. Surrounding this small white-rendered boundary walls – softened by plants – have been designed to match that of the house. Tony Holt Design: 01202 208331 tonyholt-design.co.uk

Contemporary Front Door

Copper Cladding

The contemporary front door is an integral part of the overall finish. Dark wood has been specified to match the cladding above (which is douglas fir, stained to resemble dark wood), creating a unified scheme. Above – the Rondo E70 pivot in wenge – is from contemporary door specialists Urban Front (01494 778787).

Tony included a patina copper cladding to lend definition to the new elevation — creating a striking aesthetic. Above, the TECU® patina copper façade cladding from KME (tecu.com) features an oxidised layer on the surface — created by a process similar to the natural patination that occurs with exposure to the elements.
