Recent Marvel film-makers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have returned to their Indie roots to write, direct, produce and star in their own sci-fi adventure.
Irresponsible barman Levi (Benson) and apocalyptic evangelical John (Moorhead) become suspicious when a levitating ashtray hints that something might not be quite right in the former’s recently rented apartment. Deciding their floundering fortunes might be swiftly turned around, they set up a few cameras and are determined to prove that the truth is out there. They document their brush with the paranormal, disappearing down a twisting and increasingly demented rabbit hole in the process.
Something In The Dirt is far more than a bargain basement ghost hunt, though. Like the pair’s twisted debut, Resolution, and time-twisting pseudo-sequel The Endless, this trippy concoction sends us hurtling down a slippery slide comprising explorations of gravity and electromagnetism, portentous tattoos, deep thoughts on fatalism and the human condition — and even a DIY radiation suit fashioned from a shower curtain.
