MAKE A DIFFERENCE
FOREWORD BY THE EDITOR I had thought about making this book for almost 2 years after I received an inspiration from Assistant Professor Narupol Chaiyot Ph.D. who is currently the third Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Rangsit University. He pointed out that our faculty members, alumni and current students had generated many fine architectural works into the industry. However, these works had not yet been collected, or published to the publics either. That was the beginning of this book. Further, English language is used for this book, so that it can be distributed worldwide. From my personal experience, students frequently came to me, and asked why Thai Architectural works were not as exciting as oversea works. In fact, Thailand has many talented architects, but Thailand design society has 2 major limitations. The first one is understanding or perception of Thai people towards art and beauty. If an owner or investor has some knowledge and understanding in the art, the person will be willing to invest more in the aesthetics of a project. The second factor is a limitation of budget. Many big projects are created for a business purpose, and are concerned about cost and break-even point. The owner has to control the budget, and prefers to reduce the Architectural elements as a cost controlling method. Thus, finding the open-minded clients with substantial budget is somewhat odd in Thailand. I frequently advise the students that a good Architectural design does not always have to be so thrilling. Indeed, a good Architectural work should effectively and efficiently answer all programming requirements. There is no fixed rule for any Architectural work. For each project the students should review on different processes, and choose the best process which will answer all or most requirements of project. This book includes works from the Faculty of Architecture, Rangsit University that have been created in the last 20 years. However, the works in this book are only some of the good works, and considered very little compared to all the good work that our faculty has produced. Last but not least, I hope this book will give an inspiration to all readers especially architectural students to create some good works for our society. All works in the book have been through many thinking, analyzing and examining processed before they are actually established. In the future, I will come back and inform you more on what happens at this valuable institute.

IN APPRECIATION OF THE INNOVATION In modern-days society, it is envisaged that change is one of the few certainties. With the ever increasing influx of change in our environment, so much are the needs to adapt and respond to such changes. Changes is at it s best when carefully planed, not to let it occur naturally, put it off or wait for someone to initiate it Indeed all of us, most particularly those who work in the realm of education could become effective change agents. This is why I am extremely pleased that the faculty of Architecture of Rangsit University, under the leadership of Dean Narupol Chaiyot, has embarked on the quest several years ago to seek innovative approaches to educate and reinvent the next generation of architects. An educational approach that would embrace change and perpetuate change, alongside current and foreseeable future change of our environment. While corresponding strategies are planned for producing architects who could take the lead in their profession, capable of conceiving solutions and innovations in addressing the multifaceted architectural challenges of the 21st century. I have the pleasure of extending my heartfelt congratulation to the RSU Faculty of Architecture for achieving a remarkable transformation of conventional architectural education into a highly innovative and dynamic one. To maintain the leadership in this field I have high hope that the faculty will continue to thrive for better future through building new roads towords architectural excellence for our students and for our society as a whole.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN The Faculty of Architecture of Rangsit University takes pride in completing it new holistic curriculum that enhance multi-disciplinary approach, stimulates creativity and encourages the development of individual students’ own identity and talents. The curriculum no longer pinpoints the end product as the sole benchmark for accomplishment, but sees to the process towards attaining the end product, as a vital part of the comprehensive assessment of knowledge, morale, ethics and personal qualities of students. the integration of the computer-aided design studio where students engage in hand-on designing of real-life projects has become the standard for acquiring knowledge and qualities that ultimately make a good architect a great architect. The change from conventional paper-based drawing into a fully digital layout and design originally faced criticism and resistance amongst various stakeholders. The faculty indeed took the courage of challenging the widely accepted norms and believes of the profession and touched upon the very foundation of architectural design to make a difference. With our continuing deliberations we are quite successful proving the effectiveness of the changes and now gain considerable acceptance and respect from the professional circle both in country and abroad. “Make a Difference” is more than a book. It is a statement of the changes that occur in the faculty and changes in the years to come. “Make a Difference” is an effort of the entire Faculty of Architecture. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the faculty and all concerned persons in Rangsit University to make this a dream comes true for us all. Last but no least, my deep admiration and thanks for the vision and guidance of the President of Rangsit University, Dr. Arthit Ourairat who always looks beyond the horizon of academic excellence.

ARCHITECTUREAL IMAGE : The roof, ceiling, wall and most areas of the house are white alternated with cement and polished cement of natural color by emphasizing divisible shape with rationalism of relationship between any elements from dimension and shadow-light. Proposing architectural elements simply and clearly that make it possible to select arranging various complex elements then interesting view points are presented by sustaining unity of overall images. Most indirect natural light was applied in reflection mode to give out light for a way inside a toilet and main hall way. Adjustment reduces simplified detail into only necessary ones that are used, in addition to making the house roomy and simple, it is also convenient, quick and saved budget in construction.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE : Interior architectural work way of Rim Lake (two in one) Interlocking House seems simple but was prominent at important details of structural dependence between architectural work and interior work because design procedures that respect the details of construction with functional benefits and overall styles then made any elements of interior work have an integrated relationship with architectural work by helping to classify and divisibly set any functional areas. At the same time, sustain modern and minimal style by emphasizing work continuity that is the same plane with a void, wall plane and ceiling both horizontal plane and vertical plane.

WALL HOUSE Architect: Vittvat Charoenpong Lecturer: Faculty of Architecture Rangsit University
The quest of discovering contemporary architecture that combines a traditional way of living and modern culture in a changing world has become a critical issue for today’s architects and designers. In designing this house – Bann Ing Kampang, it seems that these issues have also become the basic idea for its construction. The owner of the house, whose family consists of 12 members, wanted to build a house with a sales office located on the site of his factory in Singhaburi. Vittvat Charoenpong, the architect of this project, blended the residential and office spaces together. He placed the main plane alignment with the front main road to focus on the approach to the building, and separated the garden and lawn space from the mill.
Each floor also has a certain characteristic. The public area is an elegant double space connecting the inside and outside via a big glass wall which functions as the exterior façade, allowing one to see the interior façade created by multi-layer sloping walls. The semi-public space on the second floor is a big family room, like a mezzanine, and functions as an in-between space created by interlocking the space between lower public and upper private as well as the outdoor and indoor. Finally in the private area, Vittvat has paid particular attention to the interior design to define areas for each member of the family.
Vittvat concludes, “I believe that space is the main factor of architecture which leads to functionality. Space is universal but being contemporary and Thai should come from the response The interior space is divided into 3 parts that are connected of lifestyles, social life, physical aspects of geography and by vertical linkage and these are planned according to everyday weather, the use of materials and technology, and construction usage. The public area or office space is on the ground floor; techniques. These are major factors that influence space and the semi-public area or family space is on the second floor and form of contemporary architecture, rather than borrowing from the private area on the third floor. Two staircases connect the Thai traditional forms of architecture”. three parts together. Other functional spaces such as washing area and kitchen are clearly separated by the rear and sidewalls. 24

The “Satit Bilingual School of Rangsit University was established to serve Rangsit Community and neighboring area with a new concept bilingual School, Canteen and Gymnasium, to Administration Building, in the area of 20 Rai closed to Rangsit University. Because of the time constraint, it was started by constructing only two buildings, which are the primary school building and administrative building. The design concept of the Primary school building is to bend the traditional school configuration to be curve shaped. Aiming to enclose the open space. This can enrich the feeling of warmth and security for students and other users. The activity rooms have been arranged along the corridor; so that, they can be easily accessed by all users at all times. Moreover, the curved camps provide to connect all floors which shorten the travel distance inside the building. 60 60

The administration building is the main and most significant by its function in this complex; thus, it was situated in the front of the entire project. Because there are two major roads in front of this site, the administrative building was intended to place with 45 angle so it can have a good approach on both sides. The ellipse form 4 storey building contains office areas and the grand atrium is at 1.80 meter above ground level. This building was designed to perform as a huge entry gate to the complex. Three open space have been integrated along this daily route through this gate. Firstly, the public open space in the front area which the national flag is posed. Secondly, the waiting area under the high ceiling is used by parents and visitors. Thirdly, the playground inside the enclosed space is the place where students can play or do any desired activities. All are combined together by natural landscape that offers to the students and parents a full range of various activities.

Surrounding contexts comprise of a road in the front, and canals on the left and the back side which generate a very nice ambience. The limitation of design is high requirement for a lot of use of space in a small area. Concept Design is “minimal and small space” where shape and space are blended together like unity. The design is harmonized with behavior and taste of owner such as: Function : answer user’s demands Mass Form : arrange 4 cubic forms together Space : connect exterior and interior together Circulation : bond 4 cubic forms together Color & Material : used red color to emphasis the building and used material to differentiate from surrounding house With all concepts and designs, a small house for retiree is created, and can answer an owner’s usage and lifestyle. 104 104
