Vinson is the highest mountain in Antarctica and is apart of the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains located on the Ronne Ice Shelf near the base of the Antarctic Peninsula. First ascended by Barry Corbet, John Evans, Bill Long, and Pete Schoening as part of 10-person American expedition in 1966 Coldest of the Seven Summits with a polar climate, low snowfall, high winds, and severely low temperatures Named after Georgia Congressman Carl Vinson who supported government funding for American exploration of Antarctica
