The structure, present throughout the whole building, plays with the contrast between tranquility and chaos. The showroom exhibits itself to its surroundings, just like the tower that lets everyone who drives into Brussels know its there.

DATE 01/2010 3BaAR TEACHER Belderbos Marc LOCATION Opstal, 9255 BUGGENHOUT ASSIGNMENT Fix the urban problem of the site by joining a Library, Boy Scouts and Multipurpose room together CONCEPT The design, located in a typical and chaotic Belgian hamlet, seeks to solve the problems caused by ribbon development. A buffer space is created between the typology of the townhouse on the one side and that of the villa on the other. The variation in program (Library, Boy scouts and multipurpose room) takes both the bilateral verticality of the townhouse and the panoramic horizontality of the villa typology in account. This mix results in a new kind of typology that makes the transition between the two go smoother.

To reduce its footprint, the building is hanging in this open space, attaching itself to a big empty appartmentbuilding wall. The industrial design is optimally orientated to catch as much sunlight as possible and focusses on giving the family the biggest living space the design can take. The external cold structure makes sure this space is as open as it can be.

DATE 06/2011 3BaAR TEACHERS Laenen Sophie Fallon Harold LOCATION Beekstraat 1080 SINT-JANS MOLENBEEK/BRUSSEL ASSIGNMENT Solve the housing problem in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek by redesigning one housingblock CONCEPT The analysis showed that Sint-Jans-Molenbeek is in serious need of breathing space and shelters to renovate existing houses. The almost vacant industrial areas offer the solution. This design attempts to break down the border between Brussels en Molenbeek by creating a transverse axis filled with public programs. As part of the axis the project houses a teahouse, people´s kitchen, indoor market and parking lots. The people’s kitchen, which is linked to the local market, brings all different cultures together in a lighthearted way. The related transit housing ensures that the whole neighbourhood can enjoy a temporary stay so that the uninhabitable houses can be renovated.

For the elective Celoverkoepeling, given by Dirk Huylebrouck and Dirk Jaspaert, we had to find a solution to connect 2 domes together without simply cutting through the structure like they did in the Eden Project. A hyperboloid with negative curvature proved the perfect solution for this problem. After setting up the Hyperbolic_Double_Dome at St. Lucas Ghent my interest towards domes grew. Nowadays I occasionally place dome stuctures at events/festivals. The dome can be setup as a alone standing art object, temporary studio for Pop-Up art or the dome can simply be a party room by itself. Whit the same structure in mind and in collaboration with Aelbrecht Nik we designed a Geo_Chair to enter in the FabLab Open Source Furniture Contest.

DATE 01/2011 1MaAR TEACHERS Liebaut Eugeen Macken Marc Jaspaert Dirk LOCATION none (Vaartkom, 3000 LEUVEN) ASSIGNMENT Design a building of 372 units without deviating from a powerful abstract image of your choosing CONCEPT A seemingly infinite long wall where ‘U’- shapes are scaled, rotated and arranged, forms the foundation for this design. The long wall gets a certain thickness and houses all the functional (dark) areas. This wall is perforated on one side by the Units which in its turn houses the living areas. On the other side the Units form structural elements that support the public circulation, which is seperated from the building to avoid direct insight. The building can be seen as a living organism that, by its movement and chaos, will continue to fascinate the passing admirers.

The crew leaves the mainland and ends up on the same page as the shippers, in order to give them the optimal support. With its external structure the design blends in well with its industrial environment.

DATE 06/2013 2MaAR TEACHERS Liebaut Eugeen Mentor: Goossens Wim LOCATION Koolmijnenkaai 88 1080 SINT JANS-MOLENBEEK/BRUSSEL ASSIGNMENT Find a solution for the ongoing asylum problem in Brussels CONCEPT As a solution the asylum center manifests itself as an urban camping that offers the asylum seekers, in need of a temporary shelter, a basecamp where the safety and the security of the person is guaranteed. The building can handle the varying influx of residents with their different needs and could also be transformed to house a different program in the future. Instead of hiding the program from its surroundings -like a prison- the center tries to integrate with it, by putting its program there for everyone to see and mixes it with public functions. The chalange exist in giving the applicant the freedom and flexibility you get on a campingground but still guarantees the necessary safety and security.

53

1

Similarity_ A asylum center is similar to an ‘urban’ camping for several reasons. After arrival and registration the camper will be given a temporary stay, just as individuals who arrive in an asylum center. The campsite offers, like a asylum center, only facilities to meet the basic needs. The main occupation of the camper usually exists out of exploring the area around the campsite and discovering the qualities of the region and its inhabitants. The campsite is therefore considered as a base camp where, after a day of activities, people can relax in the private area that were assigned to them. Again, also this feature can be found in a asylum center. Finally, there is a linear relationship between the amount of open space and the occupancy of the campsite. The program of the type of occupation is therefore adjusted to the amount of space available. The kind of occupation varies in an asylum center between small, large and recomposed families, singles and minors.

2

Integration_ The site is located at the junction of the new green axis through Molenbeek -“het Zinneke” and the Canal Zone, which is in full development. This junction gets a new, large and empty square on and under which the asylum center is integrated. The organizing heart of the center, together with the common asylum functions and public functions, are located under the square, beside the walk along the canal. This ensures that the residential building or campsite does not shields the square of from the the story along the canal, but becomes the façade that the big empty square needs to be in balanced.

Splitting_ Unlike the traditional centered asylum structure -that by local residents is seen as a threat or city cancer- the Asylum center in this project goes hand in hand with its surroundings. The residential building, conceived as camping, is therefore literally pulled loose from the asylum and presents itself as an organized volume along the canal, on the edge of a disorganized ‘empty square’. The circulation between the split functions shows itself to the neighborhood, so that its surroundings no longer experiences the center as unseen and suspicious, but as an integrated living organism that creates an open relationship with his environment.

4

Flexibility_ The residential building, as camping, must be flexible in order to adapt to the fluctuating flow of various types of asylum seekers and offer an optimal housing possibility to all. This flexibility is translated into the different living levels that can be organized by moving the hinged cabinets to make areas that can house small, large and recomposed families or clusters for singles and minors.

niv. 1, 4, 6 & 9

61

5

Security_ The open living spaces are in strong contrast to the visually closed upper sleep levels. Also these closed sleep levels have some flexibility. For example, a cluster can be increased or decreased with 2 rooms by the use of sliding walls. In each cluster every asylum seeker has a private room to come to himself. In this room the person can completely open the glass wall in order to obtain a larger ‘summer room’ or close it to create a smaller room with winter garden.
