Pearls & Pumps Patient Honorees The Pearls & Pumps event on March 21 at the Omni benefits Baptist Health Foundation of Greater Louisville and is a day to celebrate cancer survivors. This year, Jackie Solomon and Michelle Henderson are the two patient honorees featured at the event. BY KATHIE STAMPS • PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER
I
n January 2019, the week before her 36th birthday, Michelle Henderson was diagnosed with ER/PR-positive breast cancer in her left breast. She discovered her first lump by doing self-exams. “Through mammograms, diagnostic ultrasounds and biopsies we learned I had more than one tumor and it had traveled into my lymph nodes,” she says. She underwent 16 weeks of chemo, did well with radiation and opted for a full bilateral mastectomy. Her body wound up rejecting the expanders from the surgery, so over the course of a month she had three scar revisions. Pathology results then showed a combination HER2-positve and HER2-negative diagnosis, so she had the port put back in and is doing chemo until October 2020.
Michelle is single mother to two daughters and is a global contract specialist at Honeywell Commercial Security. From her work and dance family, she has learned “No one here fights alone” and it’s more than a motto. “Baptist Health holds a special place in my heart,” says Michelle. “From my surgeon, oncologist, plastic surgeon and all the way to the Cancer Center therapy staff, I have felt as though my care was as important to them as it was to me. They were always able to ease my fears, control my worries and give me the peace of mind every cancer fighter needs. The Cancer Resource Center is a true patient sanctuary.”
J
ackie Solomon was diagnosed with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in October 2018. A mammogram caught it extremely early. The week before Christmas that year, Dr. William Hoagland at Baptist Health performed a lumpectomy on her right breast. “I truly feel you need to have trust with your surgeon to go into surgery with a positive feeling and outlook, and that’s exactly what I had,” says Jackie. The surgery was a success, showing clear margins and no issues in the sentinel lymph nodes, yet radiation was recommended. “Two days before my radiation appointment, I felt led to take a pregnancy test and it was positive,” she says. “While we wanted a third child, we expected that to happen after radiation.” Little Ethan arrived on Sept. 8, 2019, and then Jackie completed 21 radiation treatments from mid-October to mid-November. When people would ask about side effects, she told them she couldn’t tell the difference between radiation fatigue and new-baby sleep deprivation. He is a happy, easy baby and his two big sisters can’t get enough of him. “The care I received at Baptist Health was unparalleled,” says Jackie. In addition to her surgeon, she is grateful to radiation oncologist Dr. Carole Scharf. “The radiation techs were caring and sweet, helping to make a scary, vulnerable, trying experience into something manageable and even comfortable at times. I am thankful to have worked with the people I did.” TOPS LOUISVILLE | March 2020 19
Derby Diversity & Business Summit BY DAWN ANDERSON PHOTO BY CANDICE GENTRY
T
he seed for the Derby Diversity & Business Summit (DDBS) was planted over ten years ago as business person and entrepreneur Tawana Bain traveled to attend various conferences on diversity. She couldn’t help but notice the conferences focused primarily on individual diverse populations. Tawana wished to see all diverse groups converging together to strengthen the entire diversity network. She was ambitious enough to think this could be achieved in her relatively new home state of Kentucky. Tawana was born and raised in upstate New York, but came to Kentucky by way of Miami. It was there that she was given an opportunity with her job to transfer to Louisville. She was reluctant at first; but by Derby Week of 2005, she was sold. “I never thought I would become so involved in Derby events. But I’m not surprised given that is what made me decide to stay.” As another decade passed, Tawana held on to her vision for a truly diverse diversity conference. “I made the decision to stop waiting for others to pave the way and to create a platform for intersectionality - the act of bringing all diverse groups together.” She knew she would not be able to go it alone, and was prepared to meet with some resistance at first. In order for her to get this event off the ground, “It took an out-of-state company with DNA of diversity woven into the fabric of its overarching business strategy to step up first.” That company was Proctor & Gamble of Cincinnati, Ohio. While Tawana would have preferred to begin building the original event with a local partner, she was unable to get the local leaders she approached to rally behind the concept “because we were just not there yet.” But once the dam broke, so to speak, it started a flood of enthusiasm and cooperation with corporations from all over the country joining in, excited to establish intersectionality in the South. Tawana is
determined to work with “people who are stepping up because they believe it’s the smart thing to do, who deeply care about breaking the cycle of cultural silos and inequities and not only changing lives but wanting business to be good for everyone.” She’s not willing to settle for those “window-dressing with or paying lip-service to diversity.” So not just any partner will do. “DDBS is about serious business folks leveraging differences to move our community in a positive direction for the next generation and for the betterment of our economy.” One such local passionate partner is Churchill Downs. Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen, VP of Partnerships Kristin Warfield, and Communications Director Tonya Abeln have been of great help to Tawana in expanding the reach of DDBS. She recalls Bill and Tonya attending last year’s Derby Sneaker Ball during their busiest week of the year and Kristin serving on panels and giving welcome remarks during the opening reception. Churchill Downs maintains an attitude of “We should be doing more. How can we roll up our sleeves?” In addition to their financial support, Churchill Downs is all in, actively sponsoring and facilitating various aspects of DDBS.
Tawana Bain and Bill Carstanjen at the 2019 Sneaker Ball
DDBS has grown from 100 attendees two years ago to over 200 last year to who-knowshow-many this year. Held April 28 through May 2, 2020, the Summit will be based at the Kentucky International Convention Center, but has ignited all over the city with major events that have taken on a life of their own. Derby Fashion Week’s “International Derby Travels the Runway Fashion Show” will be held at 4th Street Live! (Visit derbyfashionweek.com to purchase tickets or to sign up for the invite-only model call) The Derby Sneaker Ball and DDBS Awards will be hosted at the Muhammad Ali Center. Exclusive morning Primp & Play parties will help attendees get gussied up for Oaks and Derby at Churchill Downs. Derby Diversity & Business Summit converges culture, business, fashion and entertainment while changing the lives of those involved. It was the springboard for the Ohio
River Valley’s first regional LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, CIVITAS. High school students got the added boost they needed to create a business plan to introduce more inclusive history education programs in Kentucky middle and high schools that has since morphed into pending legislation. DDBS also gives back with an annual grant to support nonprofits who contribute to supply chain and workforce diversity. People often ask Founder/CEO Tawana Bain how she has had such good fortune or achieved so much success. “The tables I occupy at home, at work, and in my social circles reflect diversity and increase my chances of meeting opportunity. I bring them all together to move the world in a different direction.” If you feel so moved, Tawana invites you to “Register for the conference! Get involved! Become a Financial Contributor!” There is always room at the DDBS table: derbydiversity.com.

The March 19 event starts with a cocktail hour featuring light bites from Steak & Bourbon and Hiko-amon from Westport Village, as well as Atlantic No. 5. The fashion show itself takes place on a raised runway, 48 feet long, where you’ll see models from Heyman Talent (with their hair done by Fusion Salon) showing the hottest Derby and spring fashions from Westport boutiques: Apricot Lane Boutique, Collections, Darling State of Mind, Rabbit in the Moon and Tunie’s Boutique, plus jewelry from Clater Jewelers and men’s clothing and accessories from Shirts Ties N Links. Between each fashion scene there’ll be drawings for giveaways. TOPS’ very own Editor-in-Chief, Kathy Thuerbach, will be among the media reps on stage and Claudia Coffey is the emcee. After the show, attendees will be able to shop for the looks directly from the Westport Village shop owners. “I think it’s a fun way to bring all our boutiques together to showcase the styles in advance of Derby and you can actually shop the looks for a deal right here in the center,” Carmen says. “You can purchase literally off the runway the same day.”

Hometown Girl, Food Network Star
For those who have seen her on television but never met her, having a conversation with Louisville’s own Damaris Phillips is every bit as delightful, energetic, and engaging as expected, with zero pretense. We caught Damaris after a (not atypical) whirlwind of a week spent filming a judging stint on Guy’s Grocery Games, whipping up homemade valentines for her husband, making a puppet at Squallis Puppeteers’ Puppet Hero Prom fundraiser, putting together daily Instagram giveaways...and that’s just scratching the surface. Even while racking up the frequent-flyer miles and hotel points, Damaris manages to keep one foot firmly planted here at home.
TOPS LOUISVILLE | March 2020 31
life+style
Damaris grew up as the middle child with four siblings in a family that has always loved to eat and to cook for people. Her parents both worked and decided to put one child in charge of dinner each night of the week. Damaris began working in restaurants, bakeries, and cafés in high school. Following graduation, her education and work experience took several twists and turns. Her parents had always told their children that they could be whatever they wanted to be. Damaris believed them, but hadn’t settled on a direction. Eventually, she took off to Seattle with a boyfriend who was preparing to become a doctor. Often left alone in a new city with no other friends or family, Damaris spent days off combing the library for recipes and gathering ingredients at local markets. She watched Food Network as she cooked, and planned dinner parties as her social circle grew. One Christmas her boyfriend gifted her with the book The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry: Love, Laughter, and Tears at the World’s Most Famous Cooking School in Paris. In two weeks she found herself back home at JCTC, donning her student chef coat with butterflies in her stomach. Although the long-distance relationship did not survive, Damaris had carried another dream out of Seattle: to become the next Food Network Star. She had submitted a taped audition, but did not get a call until the second round of a subsequent season of the show holding open casting calls. As fate would have it, Damaris had already planned to be in New York for her 32nd birthday. She interviewed there on December 7 and got the good news on December 19, 2012. With absolute confidence in her cooking skills, Damaris had everything to learn about making television. Food Network Star contestants are sequestered for the entire six-week taping. Isolated again from family and friends, “The stakes are so much higher. It skews the importance of the competition.” After so much time away, Damaris returned to Louisville to face months of secrecy and uncertainty. In March, she was notified that she had made Top 3, but couldn’t tell a soul until after another trip back to New York in August to film the final episode and waiting for that to air. When asked how winning Food Network Star changed her life, Damaris says, “People’s perceptions of me changed more than my life.” Fortune does not immediately follow that bit of fame; and Damaris found the industry to be quite volatile as compared to her stable culinary teaching career. But she worked hard
32 TOPS LOUISVILLE | March 2020
to build her presence on the network, all the while clinging to her Louisville roots. Her Food Network Star pilot would eventually morph into the successful show Southern at Heart, which ran for five seasons. “I like showing Louisville to people.” She wanted viewers to see her living single in the city and hosting themed dinner parties. If she had that show to do over again, she “would work even harder to be more real.” Working with Rutledge Wood on Cooking Channel’s Southern and Hungry, with Bobby Flay on The Bobby and Damaris Show, and in live interactive and on-demand cooking classes on the new Food Network Kitchen app, she has been able to demonstrate her passion for the history of food and the importance of storytelling. Damaris continues to make steady television appearances as a co-host, judge, or guest on various shows such as Beat Bobby Flay, Good Morning America, and Home & Family. She finds seeds for possible television shows everywhere: in her travels, in live radio shows like Louisville musician Ben Sollee’s Kentucky USA, and in her Bluegrass Supper Club events with business partner Chef Coby Ming and husband Darrick Wood.
••• Damaris and Darrick were married June 13, 2015, against a backdrop of the thousand origami cranes with which Darrick had proposed marriage. He had made them out of love notes, receipts, and ticket stubs from their three years of dating. They first met at a vintage carnival-themed wedding. At the reception, Damaris noticed him throwing his head back with laughter and was smitten. He has certainly put a new wrinkle in her career. Darrick is a vegetarian. Damaris admits that as a celebrity chef and unabashed foodie, she was judgmental about it at first. “I was a little bit of a brat about the way he ate. But falling in love with him has made me a better chef.” In October 2017, Damaris saw her first cookbook published - Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy: Down-Home Classics for Vegetarians (and the Meat-Eaters Who Love Them). She has more food writing and cookbook ideas swirling in her head, like bourbon, funeral foods, and her grandparents’ love story.
But before you go thinking Damaris is all work and no play, check out her Instagram filled with photos of every opportunity she can find to play dress-up. Damaris loves costume balls, theme parties, and masquerades. She finds that period dress and costumes allow her to support local businesses like Nitty Gritty, express herself, and break down the barriers to conversation. For as much as Damaris loves Louisville, Louisville seems to love her right back. On January 23, Greater Louisville, Inc. presented her with the coveted Thomas A. Edison Award, “created in 2001 to recognize an outstanding former Louisville resident who has successfully pursued their career while keeping the community close to their heart.” For Damaris, it was an acknowledgement that she is “showing, loving, and supporting this place that means so much to me. While I’m making television, I feel like I’m working in a little bubble.”
Back at home in her own kitchen, Damaris is still literally and figuratively cooking with gas, and (not a little) bourbon these days. Asking her to choose a favorite bourbon is like asking her to choose a favorite child. The burners are pretty full; so what else has Damaris cooked up? The five-year plan is to continue working in television while becoming more rooted in Louisville, grow a tangible business in Kentucky, write more books, perform on a season of The Masked Singer, and then she laughs only half-joking, “World domination!”
Louisville continues to inspire Damaris with developments such as Logan Street Market, the proliferation of locally-owned fast-casual restaurants, and Chef Space: the kitchen incubator for food entrepreneurs located in West Louisville. All of this “changes what the culinary scene looks like, with more voices and more stories.”
••• The aforementioned Bluegrass Supper Club is also intended to create community. These food centric experiences allow for deeper, local connections in what often seems like an increasingly fractured world. For more information, visit bluegrasssupperclub.com. TOPS LOUISVILLE | March 2020 33

Katie will be involved with the KDF Spring Fashion Show for the 10th time personally and the third time with her boutique. “Always fun to see other girl bosses and owners in Louisville at one event together,” she says. “Whether it be florals, bright colors or easy breezy linens, I think everyone can expect to be awed by the fun fashion brought to the stage.” She is always excited to spend time with other small-business retail owners in the area, sharing a mutual passion for fashion and Derby spirit. Katie says the best part of her job is that she gets to shop and play dress-up every day. “Derby season really enhances that for me because I get to help women really go big with their style,” she says. “To be able to dress head-to-toe looks that you won't see every day is just a really fun part of what we get to do at Six Sisters. Both the season and Derby Day make for the best party of the year.” Remember when Justify won the 2018 Kentucky Derby? Katie will never forget the season leading up to that first Saturday in May, because Six Sisters Boutique was listed in the New York Times, and she and her staff ended up shipping out 50 hats on the Monday and Tuesday of Derby week “to women all over the country who were having Derby parties in their own cities,” Katie recalls. “It's bigger than even we realize. The Kentucky Derby is an event known around the world.”

Darling State of Mind
J
en Neutz, owner of Darling State of Mind, is participating in the KDF Spring Fashion Show for the third time and she is thrilled to be showing everyone at Caesars some spring looks from her store. She has not one, not two, but three locations of her boutique Darling State of Mind. Westport Village, Middletown and Shelbyville Road Plaza all have a storefront of Darling State of Mind clothing and merchandise, including jewelry, accessories, shoes and home décor items like wall art and pillows, with everything at an affordable price. The fashions are almost always under $50. Jen doesn’t believe in price gouging for Derby, y’all. Her fascinators average $30. That’s right, that’s it, thirty. “We’re convinced we have the least expensive fascinators in Louisville,” Jen says. “We really do offer affordable fashion.” At Derby time and throughout the year, Darling State of Mind has customers as young as high school students to people in their 60s, with everyone finding what they want and need, from dresses to tops and pants to outerwear. Now, what’s hot for spring? “Jumpsuits are huge, especially midi length,” Jen says. “Leopard print is insanely popular.” For shoes, Darling State of Mind is stocking plenty of platforms and wedges. And platform wedges. Born and raised in Louisville, Jen is all about the Kentucky Derby and the entire season surrounding it. “It’s a nostalgia thing,” she says. She and her husband, also a Derby City native, even got married at Churchill Downs. “It is the one event that everyone literally loves in our city,” she says.

tephanie Susemichel’s vision of showcasing on-trend fashions at a good price point came to fruition in early 2016 when she opened Magnolia & Fig on Shelbyville Road in Middletown. “I didn’t want it to cost you a car payment to get a nice dress for Derby or for a wedding,” she says. Stephanie has a ton of fabulous Derby looks this year. “One of my big focuses every year is that I only order six pieces of each item,” she says. “It will stand out at the track. You won’t go to the Oaks or Derby and see your dress on other women.” At the KDF Spring Fashion Show, you’ll see fashions from Magnolia & Fig on the runway featuring unique details and a lot of texture, like lace overlays, and some bright neon pieces. “Neon is surprisingly flattering on a lot of different complexions,” Stephanie says. Stephanie is a Louisville native, so she grew up with the Kentucky Derby as a focal point. “It’s an institution in your life. You’re out of school for Oaks, you plan for months for Derby, you go to Thunder Over Louisville in college,” says Stephanie. “It’s more than the actual horse race. Derby is part of our Kentucky heritage.” She especially appreciates the local aspect surrounding the Kentucky Derby Festival festivities, because customers from all over the place want to support local shops and restaurants. “I love that whole culture around Derby,” she says. “It’s inclusive and really unites the city.”

nother repeat participant, Laura Patterson showed her designs in 2017 and 2018, and can’t wait for the 2020 Louisville Bespoke show. “It's always my favorite event of the year,” she says. “It is so exciting to be a part of such an amazing showcase of talent and art in the beautiful and classic Speed Art Museum.”
Laura’s line, Cannonball Swimwear, reflects her own design aesthetic and personal appreciation of fine quality, from the materials she chooses to the care taken in every stitch sewn in each garment. Her wish is “that you love your body in all that you wear.” Growing up in Louisville, Laura learned sewing and dressmaking from her mom and grandmother. Athletic and adventurous by nature, Laura loves to surf, eat foods she’s never tried, and take Polaroid pictures in places she’s never been. She has traveled the world to take in the sights and activities (and fabrics!) endemic to Hawaii, Central America, India and other exotic locales. As for the Louisville Bespoke 2020 theme of breaking the mold? “Swimwear has throughout history pushed the edge of society's expectations of women,” Laura says. “I think that continuing to move forward with innovative and exciting designs showcased by women of all ages, shapes and ethnicities may break the mold in and of itself, so perhaps we're already doing just that by being exactly who we are.”

esigner Lisa Kahl-Hillerich will be participating in her third Louisville Bespoke fashion show with her denim line called RoxyNell. For the 2020 theme of “Breaking the Mold,” Lisa says her approach for her new denim fashions will be about “unexpected types of denim fabric and finishes—things that people may have not have seen used for blue jeans before.” Intriguing, to be sure. Lisa launched RoxyNell in 2016, naming the line after her grandmother. A Louisville native, she spent 25 years in corporate America before following her heart and creative passions. Lisa says, “When I turned 50 I left my corporate family and began my journey, seeking my new calling.”
When she had custom jeans made for herself a few years ago, she enjoyed the experience so much she decided to start her own business of making jeans that fit. She sold each pair of custom-made jeans to one client at a time and then started selling them with trunk shows around town. “After having some success and partnering with a tailor we now have a brick and mortar store in NuLu,” Lisa says of RoxyNell on Market Street. Customers can try on jeans at the store and have them altered, or choose a design consultation and 10-point measurement for custom-made RoxyNell jeans from scratch. Make that bespoke jeans.
Kimberly has owned her own bridal and formalwear design business for a dozen years now. This fall she will celebrate five years with her own line called the Graceful Peony Bridal Collection.

For the 2020 Louisville Bespoke show, Kimberly’s pieces on the runway will include bridal gowns and formal gowns all in her chosen color palette of white, ivory and gold, with scattered silvers. “I’m taking a royal stance to it,” she says. “I have some things up my sleeve.”
Known for her elegantly simple and classic designs, Kimberly’s gowns and Derby-worthy formalwear have a timeless appeal with a modern silhouette, and she almost always uses flowing fabrics. “I like to see fabric move,” she says. She is inspired by nice fabrics that have a great feel, like chiffon and satin.
Kimberly went to Western Kentucky University for her bachelor’s degree in design, merchandising and textile. On campus, she made costumes for theater productions and really honed her custom skills. Now she sees clients in her hometown of Brandenburg, Kentucky, a beautiful city along the Ohio River. “My whole goal is to keep it as simple as possible, so it’s simple when I'm with the client,” she says.

Trendy Designs Three Builders Share Top Tips For Remodels, New Construction BY TAYLOR RILEY COURTESY PHOTOS
Y
ou have spent hours on Pinterest and flipped through dozens of Architectural Design magazines to assemble a plan to construct the home of your dreams. But, will your design stand the test of time, unlike the ones of decades-past? (Yep, we are getting major flashbacks to burnt orange couches of the 1970s and neon signs of the 1980s.) Whether you would like to reinvent an existing space or start brand new, there are a few things you should know when remodeling or building. Three local builders give you tips for a trendy and personalized palace.
Smaller, Not Bigger In years past, the dream home was a gigantic 5-bedroom, 5-bath home, but not so much these days say these three local builders. Vince Kimbel, owner of Kimbel Construction: Customers want a smaller, more affordable-sized home that “still gives them the budget to include nicer features throughout.” Joe Kroll, owner of Joe Kroll Builder: Middle age or older customers want smaller homes with less maintenance and upkeep, like those he works on in Norton Commons. Tom Waller, owner of Signature Homes: “(Clients are) reconstructing their lives to make them simpler.” Younger families, like those with young children and dogs, are still creating family homes in traditional homes with more land. Now, the dream home for most people is 2,400-to-2,600-square-feet.
Remodeling Remix Are you trying to decide whether to move into a brand-new home or to remodel your current home?
46 TOPS LOUISVILLE | March 2020
Vince: “Well, each client is different, but the trend is moving toward a remodel. The cost of new construction is getting very expensive, and with less and less land/lot options available, building a new home can be outside a comfortable budget for many people,” he says. “Renovating an existing home, whether it be a whole house renovation or a kitchen, bath, or outdoor living project, can add value for a lot less cost than building an entire new home”, says Vince. “Many of the clients I talk to already love their neighborhoods and their adjacent amenities and the thought of leaving a home they’ve been in for a while is not desirable, so modernizing an
existing home to give them the features they need is perfect,” he says.
Wide Open Spaces Tom: Open floor plans are still trendy. In his homes, he sees simple lines and shorter, 10-foot ceilings on the first floor with 8-foot door openings. “I’m not seeing a lot of wasted space,” he says. “Older clientele are asking for real hardwood floors,” says Tom. Vince: “A trend I see as most desired is the Craftsman-style home. These homes include tapered columns, wider eaves, exterior window surrounds, and flat trim details. The flooring I like to recommend most is, and
will always be, hardwood,” Vince states. “It’s easy to care for and gives any home a timeless look.” Indoor entertainment spaces like theater rooms have been exchanged for outdoor entertainment, whether it’s a screened porch, a grilling area, or an in-ground pool. “I think homeowners want to enjoy their homes year-round and having a special place outside with these types of amenities makes them love their home that much more,” Vince says. Joe: “Younger people want engineered hardwood, which has a lot of variety and less maintenance.”
All Custom
he uses are naturally more efficient.
All three builders agree their customers want a personalized pad.
Tom: “Our projects use foam insulation to increase energy efficiency, and thus lower the client’s electric bill from approximately $235-240 to $185-$190 a month. A tankless hot water system can also help homeowners save money.”
Vince: “My company has never built the same plan twice, and I enjoy a unique design.” He always recommends that clients go neutral on cabinetry and countertops, then add color on walls, draperies, and accessories. “I’ve seen a lot of older homes get renovated, so I can say quite certainly that neutral countertops that got installed back in the 80s still look pretty good, but I haven’t seen one teal or fuchsia-colored countertop that still looks good today,” he says. Tom: Quartz countertops and backsplashes, for example, can be customized in a variety of color choices. Another trend Tom has seen is families adding two laundry rooms in a home, one for the top floor where kids sometimes sleep, and one on the bottom floor. This can save time and is less dangerous for parents who carry linens up and down the stairs.
Energy Efficiency
Vince: “(Kimbel Construction) was the first ENERGY STAR custom builder in Kentucky in 1999. I think it’s absolutely a must to consider energy-efficient practices. These save our clients money from day one. Incorporating ‘green’ and energy-efficient products like efficient windows and doors, insulation, effective air sealing, and properly-sized and efficient HVAC equipment, can make a home the most comfortable home a client can ever live in,” he says.
Technology Tom: Many of his customers are asking for high-tech security systems that open and close garage doors, and cameras throughout the interior and exterior.
Joe: Clients in Norton Commons haven’t gone completely green, but most products

ince Kimbel, the owner of Kimbel Construction, remembers the day he first saw a Cherokee Gardens home. The exterior was beautiful; it was an over 100-year-old carriage house design that "took your breath away". The original carriage doors that the horses and carriages used to walk through are still in the home and are one of the first things you see as you enter the home. When Vince walked through the doors, he saw the architectural elements that had potential, but the kitchen looked like a "bad 1980s renovation that did not compliment the home in any way, shape or form," he says.

o, the new owners wanted to update the kitchen to something expected for a house of that character but with modern conveniences. The previous owner had designed the kitchen to be very modern with cool, sterile white cabinets, grey countertops, and a grey tile floor. There were white appliances, white walls, and white windows that "made it look like a can of white paint had just covered everything," Vince says. Vince and his crew went in and added warm colors and textures with rich, stained custom cabinetry, Marvin windows and doors, period style flooring in reclaimed wood from Lexington, rare stone countertops, modern stainless appliances like GE Monogram 48-inch range and farm sink, and a stunning island that is the centerpiece of the kitchen with its intricate wood details and butcher block countertop. "This home already has many interior brick walls throughout and in the kitchen. It was our job to uncover these hidden brick facades and/ or add new brick to complement the new finishes in the kitchen," says Vince. Vince and his team spent seven months completing the kitchen and entire home renovation. They worked closely with the owners, architect, and designer to "make sure that (the client's) overall vision for the project came to life," he says. "As with any project of this caliber, it's important to listen, take lots of notes, and organize and translate what needs to happen to the crews that are doing the work. It's my job to not only oversee the project, order materials, and schedule contractors, but it's very important to look after the details that make a project one of a kind!" The clients were "absolutely thrilled" with the project. "We've worked with Vince on several major remodeling projects on our home," the clients say. "We have an old house and wanted someone who could maintain the original character while also adding modern amenities. He always came prepared with complete bids and provided detailed plans and billing. We also felt very comfortable with the quality and integrity of all his subcontractors. Vince kept us informed on each step of the process, and when issues arose (which is inevitable in construction), he always let us know what was going on and had a plan to get back on schedule. He is honest, hard-working and great to work with. Vince is more than a GC, he is a trusted friend, and we highly recommend Kimbel Construction." 

Since 2016, Robby and Lauren Neutz have been expertly flipping houses, turning worn down places into exciting new spaces. Their business is called Neutz Flipz, and they've been likened to a Louisville version of Chip and Joanna Gaines from the hit HGTV show Fixer Upper Story. "Friends and family loved our style and asked us to start remodeling their bathrooms and kitchens," Robby says. "Things just really evolved, and we now do full interior and exterior remodeling for clients in the Louisville area." Neutz Flipz is helping the residents of Louisville flip their houses into homes they th love. In addition to their design-build construction business, Lauren is also a Realtor with Kentucky Select Properties. "This has really added value for our clients, she says. "If a homeowner is planning to sell within the near future, we advise them on upgrades that will bring them a return. We can keep them from outpricing their home in their neighborhood." The Neutzs bring great value with their combined expertise in real estate and construction. The integrity, passion, and pride in their work always shine through. Let's take a look at a recent project that Robby and Lauren took on- an entire second floor remodel in the Highlands.
"It started out with two bedrooms and a bathroom," Robby recalls. "The problem was, the ceilings were barely over six feet. Because of this, the homeowners could not actually include those bedrooms and bathroom as usable square footage when they were ready to sell. So we raised all of the ceilings, as much as 11 feet at the highest point. Not only did this create some really cool angles and personality in that ceiling, but we drastically increased the homeowner’s equity. They will now see a return on this square footage." "We eliminated the bedrooms and made it a master suite loft," Lauren says. "We fully remodeled the bathroom and enlarged the shower. We exposed the brick of the chimney to enhance the character of the home. One of the homeowners had colonnades in storage that were built by her Grandfather. She asked us to incorporate them into the remodel. They went well with the existing hardwood and time period in which the home was built. It was really special to be able to incorporate something so sentimental." The end results are spectacular to behold.

kitchen is often-times the most utilized space in a home, from entertaining to simply sipping a cup of joe in the wee hours of the morning. Designer Thom Brawner, along with Miller’s Fancy Bath and Kitchen, created a room, which was once dark, now see the light. The project, which consisted of the customer’s entire kitchen and family room off Lime Kiln Lane, took approximately six months to perfect, according to Rick Miller, owner of Miller’s Fancy Bath and Kitchen. It was once a dark, closed-in kitchen that didn’t meet the entertaining needs of the client. Rick says they wanted a kitchen that would “make a statement with more natural, cleaner finishes and a lot of storage.” And that’s just what they received.
Thom, who has designed for the company since 1993, went to work creating a space that left the customers pleased, according to Rick. The company first raised the ceiling several feet and installed a coffered ceiling. Next, the floor was exchanged for a mosaic marble. Miller’s installed Perimeter cabinets, stained cherry and with a gray highlight on the island. The countertops, by Cambria, are quartz, and the backsplash was book-matched Cambria, as well. To finish the space, the faucets and hood were installed in a polished nickel. Rick says the customers are “really enjoying” entertaining in their light and unique space. idlane Farm has been updated over its almost 200 years, never altered in drastic fashion, according to its website. The back and side porches were additions around 1870, electrical was added around the turn of the century, coal, then oil, heat was added in the 1920s, and indoor plumbing was added in 1948. All the systems were completely updated in 1983 when Barbara and Ed Stephens did an extensive renovation of the home. Preserving the historical integrity during the process, all the windows, doors, moldings, plaster, and general look of the house still appears as it would have centuries ago.

arry Doss is the General Manager of Rayburn 1, and he exemplifies the kind of integrity, hard work, and ingenuity that you can expect from the company. “I started as the tile guy, and I still am, I guess,” he quips, regarding his specialty. He’s been a friend to the Rayburn family for over 20 years, and they are happy to have him on the team. His expertise has earned him the nickname of “MacGyver,” after the famous TV hero immortalized by Richard Dean Anderson. He could get out of any jam and save the day using his guile, resourcefulness, and whatever he could find lying around. Larry is originally from Louisville, but he comes from a military family, and that meant that he moved around a lot growing up. He followed suit and served in the Air Force during the 1980s, and is happy to once again call Louisville his home doing what he loves. “We will always take the time to make things right with our customers,” he says. “I have hands that make people happy.” To get Larry on your side along with the rest of the Rayburn 1 team, visit rayburn1.com.

The first is “Plan the work; work the plan!” Drew says. “In order for a remodel to go well, a plan has to be made and followed. It’s hard work, but ensures a beautiful space and positive

ome and design are not only passions but big business for Alissa Sample of Housing Associates Realtors. As a Top 5% producing real estate agent in Louisville, #1 in her brokerage for the second year, and with $7.5 million in revenue in 2019, Alissa built her business from the ground up and takes a similar approach with home design projects. “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is taking beautiful parts of Louisville history and incorporating modern design elements while preserving their original character and charm.”
Alissa has found an excellent home rehab/design partner in Greg Fickle of Alter Louisville LLC, pictured above at one of their most recent flips - 841 Milton St. in Germantown. They have worked together on several projects throughout the city. “Greg’s design talent is unmatched. We truly feel we are altering Louisville one home at a time. We are changing the face of the Louisville market, transforming neighborhoods with each flip project and it is magnificent to be a part of. I wake up every day excited to go to work and do something I love.” Another pillar of Alissa’s business is catering to the design needs of her buyers. “I get to know them, and truly understand their style and preferences in home design.” Beyond aesthetics, Alissa uses her business savvy and experience to determine what investments will be profitable and make the most sense for her buyers’ financial goals. This brings us to sellers. Alissa knows what sells. Staging, design, and knowing the buyer market are key components of her success in home sales. Her numbers speak for themselves. She is an objective advocate guiding clients “from contract to closing table,” negotiating potential pitfalls, and preserving the value of this most important investment. “A client today is a client for life.”

he two Louisville locations of Highland Morning are “Mom & Pop and proud of it!,” according to co-owner/operator Michael Coe. His father and cousin are business partners, and several more family members work in the restaurants. The original Highlands location has been open for ten years, St. Matthews for four. Michael was raised in St. Matthews, attended Trinity High School, and has worked
in the restaurant industry most of his adult life. As evidenced by the decor, Highland Morning is “really big on local pride.” With regard to customers, “We are the diner of Louisville and part of the fabric of their lives.” Highland Morning puts love into everything they do. The food is not only made from scratch; but the recipes actually have research and development behind them. For example, every element of the Biscuits ‘N’ Gravy was studied, the ingredients and preparations selected for authenticity. The recipe has earned them the people’s choice award in multiple Louisville Annual Gravy Cook Offs. The breakfast menu has filling favorites such as the best-selling Baja Benedict: two
eggs cooked to order atop Southwestern corn cakes, Spanish chorizo, sliced avocado, chipotle peppers, topped with fresh pico de gallo, avocado hollandaise sauce, and cilantro-lime crema. Or try the Biscuit and Gravy Omelette. (Michael cautions you may need a nap after that one!) If you fancy a sweeter start to your day, you can’t go wrong with Extra Large Buttermilk Pancakes or the Stuffed French Toast with fresh blueberries and strawberries. For Spring 2020, Highland Morning’s menu is getting a revamp. A few items will be dropped and six or seven new ones added. Favorite comfort food items will remain, but according to Michael, “We also like to flex our culinary muscles and come up with flavor profiles that are a little more exciting.” TOPS LOUISVILLE | March 2020 97

Chris first worked in the restaurant business at PoFolks in Bowling Green, Kentucky, while studying at WKU. In Louisville, he worked at Garrett’s Hickory Grille and for the foodservice company Sysco. As a restaurant owner, Chris is very hands-on; and the food from Goose Creek Diner is made from scratch. “We believe in high quality for a very reasonable price. With our good portions, you will never leave hungry.” Some comforting favorites are Country Fried Steak, Chicken Fried Chicken, Chicken Pot Pie, Mom’s Meatloaf, and their Goose Creek Hot Brown: sliced, smoked turkey served over toasted white bread and topped with homemade Mornay sauce, smoked bacon, and tomatoes. Goose Creek Diner also offers weekly food and drink specials, pasta dishes, sandwiches, burgers, and plenty of seafood options during this Lenten season. For Friday

Grassa Gramma: Ristorante Italiano
2210 HOLIDAY MANOR CENTER LOUISVILLE, KY 40222 GRASSAGRAMMA.COM (502) 333-9595
P
erhaps no other cuisine in the world means comfort food to American palates quite like Italian. Kevin Grangier’s Grassa Gramma serves authentic northern and southern Italian fare that “meets the criteria and palate of locals”. Grassa Gramma translates to “plump grandma” and speaks to the familial love and the work that goes into Italian cooking, as exemplified by the matriarchal Italian grandmother, or Nonna. Grassa Gramma is the third of Kevin Grangier’s Louisville restaurants, following The Village Anchor and Le Moo. With a background in communications and marketing, Kevin enjoys the challenge of the restaurant business: the numerous touchpoints in delivering the dining experience and the immediacy with which impressions are made. From the moment you enter Grassa Gramma, every element of decor is “captivating and meant to draw you in” with the feel of old world Italy. The art, tapestries, marble, and even the dishes are authentic Italian; and the bar features a salvaged 18th century Gothic church altarpiece. Servers receive extensive training in Italian food and wine. Instant familiarity is created at each table as the server greets with and joins in on a Chianti toast. Chef Robert Rice, a ten year veteran of Wolfgang Puck kitchens, sources only the best ingredients: wild-caught fish, organic prime meats, locally-farmed produce. Kevin recommends a starter of Fritto Misto, aka calamari. Pasta Classic Ragu Bolognese (“our signature slow-stewed meat ragu with beef, veal, pork, pancetta, rigatoni & ricotta salata”) showcases the ultimate Italian Sunday Gravy. In a pizza mood? Try the coal-fired “Great Uncle Valentine'' with Clifty’s country ham, pickled jalapeños, dried cherries, ricotta, and rosemary. Expertly executed by Pastry Chef Shelby Notess, the Limoncello Torta: limoncello-soaked sponge cake with lemon curd, blackberry coulis, Italian meringue and housemade lemon macarons will send you to bed with sweet dreams.

ith the success of Goose Creek Diner, Chris and Anne Mike decided “what’s good for the Goose is good for the Gander” and opened Gander: An American Grill. Open for 3½ years, Gander offers a relaxed atmosphere with familiar, satisfying dishes, but levels up with elegant decor and a full bar. Servers here are trained to “read the tables” so that their service style is tailored to
each party, from laid-back to formal. Gander’s most popular appetizer is Fried Green Tomatoes with Gander Sauce, followed by entrées like the Bourbon Pork Chop, Sweet Chili Salmon, Louisiana Shrimp and Grits with andouille sausage, and Prime Rib Tacos with tobacco onions, pico de gallo, and creamy horseradish. The Lunch Specials Menu features some exclusive menu items, such as Backyard BBQ Sliders with pimento cheese and tobacco onions or Strawberry Salmon Salad with field greens, candied pecans, goat cheese, egg, and balsamic vinaigrette. Satisfy your sweet tooth with Gander’s desserts: Butterscotch Blondie, Crème Brûlée, Lava Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, or Reese’s Pie.

pened as a delicatessen by Harvey Board in 1929, Cottage Inn at Eastern Parkway and Bradley Avenue serves American comfort food classics, homemade on the premises. Cottage Inn has been owned and operated for the past three years by Sam Zughbi, a New Jersey native who came to Kentucky 16 years ago. As just the seventh owner in over 90 years, Sam gave the interior a fresh, light renovation and redecorating without sacrificing the cozy, nostalgic vibe. He brought in new kitchen equipment and enhanced the menu with additional options including Chicken Fried Steak and seafood platters. While Sam is open to the chef’s choices and customer suggestions, he reassures regulars (some of whom have been around as long as 30-40 years) that the original recipes will remain. The daily Dinner Specials are at the heart
of Cottage Inn’s familiar, hearty comfort food: Turkey & Dressing, Chicken Fried Steak, Roast Beef, Fried Chicken, Hot Brown, Salmon Patties, and Fried or Baked Fish. The entire menu is faithfully executed by experienced cooks such as Head Chef Marty Atkins, who has been at the helm of the kitchen for over 30 years, and Jamie, who has been there for 15 years. According to Sam, “The style of cooking hasn’t changed. We have never compromised quality for profit margin.” For
dessert, Cottage Inn serves cakes, cobblers, and pies made to order from Heitzman Traditional Bakery, which has been in operation in Louisville for over 120 years. Sam Zughbi sees Cottage Inn as “a throwback to a better, simpler time” with an ambience and service that is “like having someone serve you in your own home.” His entire team views itself as family. “The family atmosphere translates to the customers. They really enjoy it.”

hen celebrating a special occasion or for just a night out on the town, but comfort food is what you crave, La Chasse delivers on another level with fine dining and rustic, wood-fired European cuisine. Opened by Isaac Fox in the fall of 2015, their Southern European menu is “prepared with classic French technique and exuberant innovativeness” by Executive Chef Kristina Dyer. Isaac has traditionally worked front of house and behind the bar in his career at Jack Fry’s, the now-closed Vietnamese Basa Restaurant, as Beverage Director at Volare, and now as owner of LaChasse.

La Chasse is French for “the hunt” and holds threefold meaning to Isaac: 1) Wild game is found in the menu. 2) They believe in using organic, locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible. 3) It symbolizes “the hunt” for perfection. La
Chasse intends to deliver a comprehensive program with “quality and consistency of food, beverage, and service” at a high level of detail. The menu changes six times per year; their expansive specialty cocktail menu changes even more often. They boast an “esoteric, Southern French wine list” and a tea selection imported from Paris. Comfort food at La Chasse begins with appetizers like Country Pâté and Fried Oysters. Hearty entrées include Kentucky Fried Rabbit with aged Manchego spaetzle, pork belly braised greens, Worcestershire reduction, and cherry-apricot mostarda, as well as a Cast Iron Seared Pork Chop, Braised Beef Short Ribs, and a vegetable Ravioli. Imagine the dining room, with the look of a French country inn by the fireside and service that feels like family. La Chasse recently added dinner service on Mondays from 5-9pm, are partnering with Angel’s Envy for a cocktail dinner on March 23, and have planned a Spanish Wine and Guitar Dinner on June 8, featuring Isaac Fox himself on classical guitar.

the only thing that sets this restaurant apart. The 100% scratch kitchen is run by Executive Chef and Eddie Merlot’s™ Regional Cuisine Chef Terry Davidson, originally from Pittsburgh. All meats and seafood are chef-selected and hand-cut. Beef is USDA Prime, a certification given to only 2% of beef in the United States, and aged for 21 days. The menu is “more chef-driven than a typical steakhouse” and the Louisville location benefits from being home to the Regional Cuisine Chef. In the highly-competitive restaurant business, and among premium steakhouses in particular, Eddie Merlot’s™ boasts unique ingredients and a menu that often surpasses expectations.
General Manager George Carpenter started working restaurants in high school and has been in the restaurant business ever since. He came to Eddie Merlot’s™ three years ago. His assistant and Hospitality Manager, Joni Latifi, worked his way up from server in just one year’s time, so impressive was his background, work ethic, and way with guests. Prior to this, Joni studied hospitality and worked in a lounge in his native Albania, and then in restaurants in New York and Martha’s Vineyard. George and Joni have a unique working relationship that has developed into a genuine friendship. They see each other as equals and share a guiding principle that spills over into their work with the rest of the staff, Proverbs 27:17 - “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Among the multitudes of premium ingredients, Eddie Merlot’s™ exclusive Wagyu beef from the cattle of award-winning Tarpoly Creek Ranch in South Queensland, Australia produces some of the finest steaks in the world with the highest marbling scores. The Wagyu is served as a 5 or 7 ounce MS9+ Filet Mignon and a 16 ounce MS7/8+ Ribeye. But what do these letters and numbers mean? “Australian Marble Score equivalents: USDA Choice = MS 1-2; USDA Prime = MS 3-4; Marble Scores 5 and above do not have an equivalent USDA grade, scoring so much higher than domestic cattle, creating richness and flavor not present in domestic cattle.” When your server says, “Excellent choice!,” they may well be understating the dining experience you are about to have with this Wagyu unique to their brand.
But their leadership dynamic is not

ppropriately enough for Louisville, Kentucky, George and Joni recommend the Prime Bourbon Ribeye - marinated in bourbon, brown sugar, and spices and topped with onion straws. There is a generous list of Enhancements and Sides to accompany your steak, some classics and some “Eddie’s” specials. With their own Maker’s Mark Barrel, this location serves a proprietary Old Fashioned that will pair nicely with the steak of your choice. In fact, their extensive bourbon program rivals any bar or restaurant selection in the state of Kentucky. Oenophiles will rejoice with a bottle chosen from the impressive wine list, 80% of which celebrates so many wonderful California varietals. In this season of Lent, many Louisvillians turn to seafood on Fridays. There are several pescatarian options on the menu, including three distinct oyster preparations: On the Half Shell, Rockefeller Style, and Charbroiled Style. Or really go all-out with a Chilled Seafood Tower for the table, which is composed of oysters, crab legs, and shrimp cocktail. For

an entrée from the Fresh Fish & Seafood selections, George and Joni would have you try the pan-roasted Sea Bass with julienne vegetables, maple apple cider vinaigrette, and balsamic glaze. Serving up all these delectable dishes are their congenial staff of cooks, bartenders, and servers. George and Joni firmly believe that happy staff equals happy guests. In fact, they prioritize their staff first, certain in their experience that such a pleasant, safe, trusting work environment leads to job satisfaction and a low turnover that directly benefits the guests. They see each member of the staff as a brand ambassador for the company, one who calls guests by name and customizes the experience, “planting seeds” that lead to a “harvest of business”. With an average expenditure of over $100 per individual guest at a seating, they seek to always demonstrate value and validate that price point for the customer. The sumptuous setting sets Eddie Merlot’s™ apart as well. No heavy, dark enclosed
booths here. Instead, the dining room has an open, airy ballroom feel to it, with softer colors and lighting fixtures that give off a warm, amber glow. As George tells us, the space is “purposely designed for everyone to enjoy.” Steakhouses have traditionally catered to a more masculine sensibility, especially in decor, whereas Eddie Merlot’s™ restaurant design is geared to men and women alike. There are also two large, private dining rooms for special events such as business meetings, anniversary or graduation celebrations, birthday or retirement parties, memorial lunches, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, and wedding receptions. Mixers can be hosted in the bar area. Occasionally, they will cater offsite, but must be very selective of venues due to the particular care necessary for consistent quality in their food preparation and presentation. Private events represent one-quarter of the business. Eddie Merlot’s™ gives back by participating in multiple charity events throughout the year and is represented at Taste of Derby and Taste of Louisville.

Pre-Derby Surgical & Non-Surgical Treatment timeline
Renuvion Profound before and after photos
4 to 6 weeks out You have plenty of time to have a surgical procedure such as a facelift, neck lift, eyelid lift, breast augmentation/lift/reduction, liposuction, Renuvion/FaceTite/BodyTite skin tightening procedure with a doable recovery. Procedures are performed as outpatient under local or IV sedation, many times in our in-suite operating room or outpatient surgery center. Surgery remains the gold standard for a one-and-done result, but below are some newer technologies our office has pioneered to provide up to 40% or more off surgical results in a single step!

t's mid-March with a little more than seven weeks until Derby fun‌parties, parades, steamboat races, balls, and those exciting days at the track! It's time to make your finest accessory - YOU! - look its very best! The key to any feature-enhancing treatment or service is balance and proportion, de-emphasizing the negatives and enhancing the positives. The real secret is a well-executed plan, so no matter the procedure, it's the talent behind the tool that makes the difference between an average and an overthe-top result. Every. Time. Here's a list of our favorite pre-Derby treatments to plan to look your best this spring.
118 TOPS LOUISVILLE | March 2020
We recommend minimally invasive procedures that require approximately 1 to 2 weeks' recovery time for this time frame. Tighten the neck and lower face with Renuvion or FaceTite. Renuvion is performed with IV sedation and FaceTite with either IV sedation or local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and a medication cocktail. Liposuction may be combined with these procedures and still have a 2- to 4-week recovery. A neck strap is worn for one week all day and a half day the second week. For patients who don't want even the tiny incisions used in these treatments, Profound is an excellent choice. Profound will not only tighten skin but also brighten the tone and texture of the face and body, melt fat, and add dermal volume similar to a filler. Profound can be combined with laser treatments and can be done on the full face and neck (or body, like cellulite and banana rolls), or Profound can be done on just regions of the face (upper or lower). We love the Profound neck lift, facelift, or brow lift! For your body, we have a noninvasive 4-treatment series performed once a week: BodySculpt (tightens abdominal and buttock muscles while reducing fat and tightening skin), Exilis, Vaser Shape, and UltraShape Power which reduce fat and tighten skin.
1 to 2 weeks out So close to Derby, we rely heavily on our myriad injectables to face and lips restoring volume and collagen; Bellafill, Sculptra, Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella to name a few. Neurotoxins are always popular to ease lines. Don't forget the prescription skincare to make your skin glow in the spring sunshine (or outshine the storm clouds. After all, it's Derby time!) Early spring is a great time to schedule light to medium depth laser resurfacing procedure. With our several "fractional" lasers (Sciton and CO2RE), you will heal faster while revealing smoother skin and treating red and brown spots and wrinkles. Our lasers are also very effective for spider veins and hair removal for those spring legs. Microneedling devices like Fractora are also popular closer to Derby with shorter recovery time (1 to 3 days) compared to Profound (1 week). 

hen you think of Habitat for Humanity, you think about volunteers building houses. Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville has built or renovated more than 525 homes in the Kentucky counties of Jefferson and Oldham. Building houses is the ‘what’, and the ‘why’ is to change lives. “Working alongside homeowners, volunteers and generous sponsors, Habitat for Humanity builds decent and affordable housing that creates change for families that is transformative and lasting,” Rob Locke, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Metro
Louisville. “Home is a powerful tool that affects everything from education to health. Affordable homeownership helps families succeed and our community thrive.” Locke says Habitat for Humanity partners with families “to provide a hand-up, not a hand-out.” The homes are not free; they are sold at cost to the Habitat homebuyers with a 20-year mortgage at 0% interest. The homeowners will have a monthly mortgage payment after they attend 25 different financial and homeownership classes and workshops, and put in 400 hours of sweat equity on their own home.
Four new Habitat builds are scheduled to start in March and two new builds are on the calendar for April, including a build during April 15-25, the Mayor’s Give a Day Week of Service. In June, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville will have a Women Build to celebrate the women’s suffrage centennial. Habitat has 22 employees who focus on affordable housing solutions and 20 employees in the ReStore locations, and community volunteers are always welcome to help Habitat fill over 10,000 opportunities throughout the year—on the construction sites of the new builds, as well as by working directly with the homebuyer families and at Habitat ReStore. Anyone and everyone can donate furniture, home goods and appliances to Habitat ReStore and the public is welcome to shop there. Proceeds from sales support Habitat’s mission in the Louisville area. As of March 2020, there are two Habitat ReStore locations in Louisville, on Taylorsville Road in Hikes Point Plaza and on Rowan Street in the Portland neighborhood.
Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville’s mission is to bring people together to build homes, community and hope through housing solutions of homeownership, community development and home repair.
25% of Louisville’s working families live in poverty. 6,000 JCPS students are considered homeless. There are over 5,000 vacant and abandoned properties throughout Louisville.
Homes for Heroes® is dedicated to serving and giving back to firefighters, law enforcement, military (active, reserves, and veterans), healthcare workers, EMS, and teachers when you buy, sell, or refinance a home.
In 2020, Habitat will build or rehab 22 homes in Metro Louisville.

“Every volunteer experience is unique and the impact you will help create in a family’s life will be lasting,” said Trish Tobbe, Volunteer Programs Manager for Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville. No previous experience is needed before volunteering on a construction site. There are other ways to donate your time and compassion, like mentoring and communicating with homebuyers and helping the site selection committee acquire real estate. Habitat is the largest user of the Landbank Authority, the agency that deals with distressed properties and vacant lots within the city. “Bringing people together to transform lives through homeownership is at the heart of our mission,” Tobbe said. “We believe in the power of volunteers working side-by-side to provide safe, affordable homes for families in need of decent housing.” One of the newest programs of Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville is its Community Development and Home Repair Program. Launched in 2016, it involves making home repairs and improving the streetscape in Louisville’s underserved neighborhoods where Habitat has an investment. Habitat has worked in five West Louisville neighborhoods so far, completing 54 home repairs, hosting 8 neighborhood events and working on neighborhood beautification projects in alleyways, community gardens and public parks. Last year, the Community Development and Home Repair Program added a component to address critical home repairs. In the East Portland neighborhood, community volunteers and residents completed 11 exterior, minor home repairs in 2019 in addition to 10 critical home repairs. “Habitat’s work in the community provides an opportunity for people from all different backgrounds and cultures to put their faith and God’s love into action to build homes, community and hope,” Locke said. “It’s through the process of working side-by-side that ‘you’ and ‘me’ becomes ‘us’ and ‘we.’ And we realize we are far more alike than we are different.”

ur March SuperMom Lesa Buckler, owner of Details Furniture Gallery and Design, does not remember a time when she wasn’t interested in design. And when her two beautiful daughters came along, “I took on motherhood like a career,” she says. Lesa was born in Lebanon, Kentucky and her upbringing was “pure Americana” as she characterizes it. She was the Homecoming Queen who dated the football player. “You can’t get much more ‘Jack & Diane’ than that!” She laughs, referencing the 1982 John Cougar hit song. Lesa continued her studies at the University of Louisville and Sullivan University, earned a Master’s degree from Campbellsville University, and married her high school sweetheart, Richard. When Lesa was 26, her daughter Julia was born, followed a couple of years later by daughter Jacqueline. She was fortunate to be able to let her career take a back seat for a while during that time. “I never stopped learning, reading, and studying,” Lesa says, “to be all

the girls needed me to be.” This was the same dedication she had given to studying design. Beautiful environments always fascinated Lesa, from interiors to landscapes to fashion. Her mother taught her to sew; and by junior high Lesa was designing and making her own clothes. She recalls trips to Baer Fabrics and department stores in downtown Louisville, shopping for fabrics and fashions. Lesa also remembers telling her daughters that she would one day have a brickand-mortar design store. She manifested that dream, opening Details in 2001. It was here that she taught her daughters the importance of having fun, working hard, and how to deal with the public. Details has been steered successfully, even through tough times like the 2008 recession. “Richard and I are constantly working on growing the business and educating ourselves through all the changes. We never rest on our laurels.” Their guiding principles are “kindness, happiness, understanding our customers, and loving what we do.” They are most proud of their growth, retaining a huge client base, and continued education to maintain their high quality and level of design. Even on vacation in Florida last month, they made time to tour the 3rd Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach for more networking and design inspiration. “The business takes every effort. We never leave anything to chance.” Lesa and Richard were both raised to understand the value of a dollar. “We value our clients’ money like we value our own.” Both daughters work in the family business,
are also her clients. And her clients become friends. In turn, Lesa does her best to frequent and support local businesses. Outside of work, Lesa enjoys golfing, reading, studying history and design, and traveling. Still, her travels mix business with pleasure and include visits to design shops, markets, and open houses. Lesa’s highest priorities are honesty, relationships, having a good time, and working at being the best that she can be. Lesa’s innate ability to relate to others and put others first, regardless of perceived status, was a trait her father told her he recognized early on and helped to nurture. She prides herself in understanding people and human nature, and puts those skills to work.
with Julia also co-owning Vogue Pilates in Louisville and Jacqueline having previously worked in design in Greensboro, North Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee. Lesa is most proud of her daughters and the “kind, smart, loving, amazing women” they have become. “I love them immensely.” As they grew, Lesa transitioned from a “teaching Mom” to more of “a friend Mom, open to their opinions, thoughts, and lifestyles.” The fact that their friends still want to come over to “Mama Bear’s” house, even now in their early thirties, is a good indication of the strength of that relationship. Balancing work and personal life is the classic struggle of the working mother. In Lesa’s case, those lives are intertwined. Her friends
Lesa’s advice for her daughters is to be real, honest, and always evolving in their careers. “Relationships are a by-product of continuing to grow.” Richard always trusted Lesa’s business decisions. “Still today after 40 plus years together, Richard is the absolute best supportive husband I could imagine. He thinks I can do anything! He set an amazing example of what a Dad and a husband should be.” Lesa explains that every woman has a different definition of “having it all” that they have to decide for themselves. And that they can “approach every day with the attitude of working towards having it all.” For Lesa, that means setting aside some time each morning to name three things for which she is grateful and to set an intention for the day, which in turn sets the tone for dealing with the world outside. “When you love your home and your family life, you’ve already won the battle.”

ennie Angell Mengel was born Jennie Nita Angell February 28, 1872 in Bay City, Michigan to Richard Angell and Elizabeth Craine. Jennie Angell graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with a degree in philosophy. During her college years, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1892, when their delegate to the National Convention fell ill, Jennie traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to represent the Psi Deuteron Chapter. She was appointed there as Grand Council Treasurer of Kappa Kappa Gamma National. After graduation, Jennie accepted a teaching position with Miss Hampton’s School for Girls on Walnut Street in Louisville, where young ladies were instructed in Elocution and English Literature. At the boarding house where Jennie Angell stayed during her tenure at Hampton School, she met Herbert Wheeler Mengel. Herbert, originally from Massachusetts, had moved to Louisville a few years before to join his brothers Charles and Clarence in business, manufacturing wooden boxes and beer barrels. Jennie and Herbert’s romance was followed breathlessly in the society papers of the time. After their engagement, Jennie’s brother fell ill; so she traveled back to Bay City to help look after him. Lest she fall for a rival suitor while there, Herbert chased her up to Michigan and insisted they marry right away. Jennie and Herbert were married in her hometown of Bay City, Michigan on May 15, 1896. The marriage would produce four children: Herbert Jr., Elizabeth Angell, and twins Frances Rawson and Jane Potter. Sadly, Frances succumbed to influenza in 1912 at only 15 months of age.

Across the country there is a growing movement to recognize noteworthy women and their historical contributions through public monuments. Unfortunately, less than 7% of the 5,193 monuments in the United States presently recognize women. We are about to change that statistic with the “Breaking the Bronze Ceiling” initiative. Each month TOPS will feature a Kentucky woman who impacted the Women’s Rights Movement. For more information visit breakingthebronzeceiling.com.

By 1900, C. C. Mengel & Bro. Company was a multinational lumber business, employing hundreds of workers in Louisville and owning vast expanses of commercial property and fleets of ships for transport. With the success of the Mengel family business and the growth of their family, Jennie had stopped teaching, but remained active in the community. Among several, her memberships included the Louisville Monday Afternoon Club and Kentucky Library Commission. In 1906, Jennie visited many rural schools
On September 8, 1934, Jennie’s daughter Jane Shulhafer lost control of her car and crashed into a tree on Southern Parkway. Jane escaped with minor cuts; but Jennie suffered two broken ribs, a badly wrenched back, and several torn ligaments. An older companion, Miss Fannie Castleman Rawson, was fatally injured. (No doubt Frances Rawson Mengel, Jennie’s deceased daughter and Jane’s twin, had been named after Fannie.) On September 12, following an operation, Jennie contracted pneumonia. Although doctors were optimistic at first, Jennie Angell Mengel passed away December 10, 1934 at the age of 62.

Give back to those who have already given so much USA Cares' mission is to provide post-9/11 military veterans, service members and their families with emergency financial assistance and post-service skills training that will create a foundation for long-term stability. Our services improve the quality of life for veterans and their families and reduce potential factors that contribute to veteran suicide.
Your support not only changes lives, but saves them too. Stephanie Weidenbarner with Carrie and John Bachman
