Black Soil KY

Helping Kentuckians eat local year round by partnering consumers with area farmers and chefs, Black Soil KY is a one-of-a-kind, black-woman-owned small business that has invested more than $1 million into black farming operations, culinary businesses, creators, craftspeople and makers through a range of grants, strategic partnerships and more.

“Lexington has nurtured my leadership and passion to serve through countless mentors, like Gertude Peeples, Lisa Higgins-Hord and Ed Holmes,” explained Black Soil’s Ashley C. Smith. “Their compassion and patience throughout my life has grown my confidence in my skills and my love for this community.”

Connecting her neighbors with Kentucky Proud seasonal products, farm goods and local meats not only allows Smith to satisfy their hunger for quality produce, but delivers them the chance to support the operations and artisans that make this region so unique.

“Consumers should look to support local farmers each chance they get,” she said. “Look for folks who are passionate about growing your food and providing the education on the process it takes to get from the farm to your table.”
