2022'S MOST EXCITING Design Trends by Allyson Mattingly

Neutrals and Natural Materials

If there’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that neutrals never go out of style. This year, homeowners are reaching for classic shades like beige, cream, gray, and brown with warm undertones to cover their walls. We’re also seeing natural earth colors such as green and terracotta as a base to create something eye-catching by layering in more vibrant colors. People are also aiming for longevity and timelessness in their home spaces. Organic materials such as clay, natural wood, stone, rattan, and brick help create a zen-like feeling in your home. To add more interest to a calming canvas, you can blend your neutrals with furniture or decorative elements that contain jewel tones, trees, curved furniture, and statement art.

Vintage

If you haven’t already noticed, vintage is making a huge comeback in about every category of life, home decor included. Because of supply shortages and homeowners becoming increasingly more sustainable, vintage furniture has become a popular option when decorating the home. Vintage furniture is not only sustainable, but it allows your personality to shine through in your home. There’s a past with this type of furniture, and many pieces have intricate, personal details that can’t be recreated.

Going vintage doesn’t mean we’re going full-on grandma, though. We’re going to see a mix of old and new: an eclectic barrel back chair paired with contemporary artwork, for example. A fun aspect about going with vintage goods is the certainty that none of your neighbors will own the same piece! You can score unique furniture, textiles, and accessories at local thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, repurposed furniture stores, or even Facebook Marketplace.

Textiles

To balance out your neutrals, you’re going to need a little bit of texture… or a lot of texture! Velvet, sherpa, fringe, and boucle are all fabric options that can make a space feel and look luxurious. Maybe we’ve spent too much time at home during the pandemic, but cozy fabrics and materials are a must in every room this year.

It may seem daunting to add texture to your home for fear of overdoing it, but it can be as simple as layering different fabrics on your bed. Clean, plain base fabrics allow you to layer chunky knit throws with tweeds and jacquards or a velvet duvet cover with leather pillows. Once you’ve decided on materials, pile up those pillows and drape a blanket across the foot of your bed to create a comfy, cozy, chic bedroom. Soft and Calm

Bold Tones

Even though we’re focusing on neutral tones as a base layer, we’re still embracing color! Just like adding vintage pieces of furniture, eye-catching colors allow your personality and individuality to shine through in your home. Bright, mid-century hues are making a comeback, such as orange-tinged reds, jewel-toned greens, dusty blues, terracotta pinks, and buttery yellows. Consider color psychology: green hues radiate comfort and safety, while pinks promote warmth and kindness. If you’re not one for bright pops of color, black accents and hardware can add edge and depth to minimalistic spaces. Choose light, airy colors for main elements like sofas, paint color, and chairs, but swap that gold floor mirror for a black one. This will provide for a pop of contrast without taking away from your overall vibe of refinement.

Biophilic Design

If you’re a plant parent, this trend goes out to you. We’re all craving a stronger connection with the outside world. That’s why we’re seeing more green hues, nature-themed spaces, and, of course, more plants! Houseplants promote clean air and have a calming effect in whatever room they’re placed in. Many popular plants, including monsteras (the swiss cheese plant) and pothos, are relatively easy-going and don’t require constant care. Studies have shown that houseplants have various benefits, from air purification to reducing stress and increasing creativity and productivity. If that’s not enough to convince you to become a horticulture enthusiast, they also create an aesthetically soft, natural space while accenting signature pieces, leaving you with a visual connection to nature. More trending plants for 2022 include parlour palms, foliage houseplants, and the beautiful Alcoasia Silver Dragon. Now I’ve got myself wanting to go buy more plants!

Versatile Spaces and Furniture

Multifunctional spaces are hot in 2022, with many individuals continuing to work or attend school from home. Being stuck at home for so long made people realize how they could add more functionality to a space. For smaller areas, furniture that offers multiple functions is ideal, like an ottoman that can be used for extra seating or an additional side table.

Consider rearranging furniture and décor by function and move similarly functioning pieces to separate areas. This will allow for more space and functionality in your home – and it may be your new favorite setup! Smart furniture designed with multiple functions in mind or shelving that can open and reveal a TV, for example, can provide style and beauty for your home, but functionality as well.
