Granny's inheritance just came through... we're celebrating a design sensibility that's built on breathing new life into the "outdated" while gleefully embracing "more is more..." by Amanda Harper Clary Bosbyshell - Interior DesignGrandmillennial StyleTOPSinLex.com | April 2022 93
Millennials have been accused of “killing” everything from the diamond industry to fabric softener. But one thing they have resurrected? Granny’s cast-offs.
Grandmillennial style rose up on social media as a reaction to the ultra-sleek modern and minimalist décor that has so pervaded Instagram feeds the world over. It’s characterized by an appreciation for pieces that have been deemed “outdated” or “too stuffy.” But don’t think Grandmillennial style completely rejects the fresh and modern. On the contrary, it’s all about working in a few pieces that are on-trend to create a look that is ever-evolving and never stale. It’s a whimsical approach to design, with layered patterns, bold colors and a sense of humor. Think fringe and ruffles, wallpaper and chinoiserie, trims and drapery. Everything is just a little bit “extra.” If that sounds a lot like Southern design, you’re onto something. These two styles absolutely share some important DNA. What separates the two is a wink and a smile; where Southern homes are traditional and elegant, Grandmillennial spaces tend to be just a little silly. Think pillows embroidered with funny phrases, a Greek bust used as a planter, intentionally clashing patterns and an unexpected, irreverent work of art above the mantle.

More Patterns, Please!
The first unwritten rule of going Grandmillennial is “bring on the prints!” Playing with patterns is the cornerstone of this style. From wallpaper to upholstery, rugs to throw pillows, work them in whenever and wherever possible. Make the look cohesive by sticking to a color scheme.
Prim Trim
Ruffles, tassels, fringe, garland, pompoms, ric-rac and grosgrain… these little touches help slingshot décor elements from ordinary to extra. From table skirts to curtain ties, there are countless ways to customize your space with these interesting little details.
Go Antiquing
To paraphrase Ina Garten, if you don’t have precious family heirloom furniture to incorporate into your décor, store bought is fine. Scour local antique stores, thrift shops and vintage vendors to find classic pieces that speak to you. Look for traditional silhouettes with character. A word of caution: you may be tempted to DIY some pieces in need of rehab. If you’re skilled at such endeavors, by all means, go for it! But if not… steer for pieces that you don’t have to work on.
While you’re browsing, consider vintage textiles. Vintage drapery, deadstock fabric, antique table linens or even scarves can be worked into your décor in a snap.
Get Quirky
It’s so important to incorporate your personality and sense of humor into this style. Bring in a sculpture that makes you smile. Add a bold neon accent that no one’s expecting. Throw in an ultra-modern light fixture. Use a cheeky pattern or throw pillow… whatever brings “you” into the space. Accessories are important here. Grandmillennial style loves to adorn walls, shelves and tables with fascinating trinkets. This is one place where the rules of what “counts” as Grandmillennial need not apply. Feel free to mix antiques with modern objects. Set your table with a mix of granny’s china and brand-new chargers and flatware. Put a sleek Scandi-inspired candelabra right beside the antique placemats you got at the flea market. This is about you and what you love, not about what’s trendy. And that’s the whole point of Grandmillennial style! • One Kings Lane
