Letter from
The Founder
H
i. I’m Ralf Fletcher, CEO at Topco Media, and I am so excited to introduce you all to the much-anticipated 18th annual Standard Bank Top Women 2021 Virtual Awards! For 12 years, Standard Bank has been supporting the 2-day conference event, pushing us to take the Top Women programme across the nation in pursuit of building a trusted network of top gender empowered companies and women entrepreneurs. Following the conference, the awards is where we further celebrate Top Women and the companies behind them. Together, we honour and applaud outstanding leadership, ingenuity, vision and innovation in organisations that play a significant role in advancing women in our economy. We believe that by empowering women, we can play our part in accelerating
growth in Africa. Thus far, we have brought together tens of thousands of strong women from multiple sectors across the nation, certifying more than 2000 organisations annually as Top Women entities, and celebrating exemplary candidates each year at our coveted awards ceremony. This year, we addressed gender disparities and women empowerment, with our key theme being: “BRAVE CONVERSATIONS 2.0 THAT UPLIFT AND DRIVE CHANGE”.
These conversations tackled hardhitting issues such as Opportunity Inequality, Empowerment, GenderBased Violence and Remote Working for Women — taking the current global pandemic into consideration. Through this theme, the summit aimed to fuel the global gender empowerment movement by connecting women entrepreneurs, global icons, thought leaders and experts to put forward inspiration and actionable insights that will assist emerging Top Women. The awards are celebrated separately to the conference and this year our theme is Agents of Change. Can you imagine 007 meets Lady Gaga? Top

sportswomen, olympians, Miss South Africa, two incredible Lifetime Achievers, a Keynote Address by the likes of Alef Meulenberg, our MCs Leanne Manas & Loyiso Madinga, and entertainment by My Neighbour’s Wife are just some of the fantastic people we’ll be having at the awards. Alongside top CEOs, directors and companies doing top notch work. We’ve got Boschendal, Ekurhuleni West Tvet College, Motheo Tvet College, Servest, SANBI, and TEG on board - just some of our incredible sponsors for this year’s event. This is bound to be an experience that will break new ground for women across Africa and beyond! This virtual experience wouldn’t be possible without the technological innovation of Remo - the interactive virtual event platform that empowers you to grow and engage your audience thereby humanising the online event experience. We hope to Engage, Enlighten and Encourage all of you through these fantastic celebrations. Well done to all of the finalists. We are all winners!

Foreward:
Lindy-Lou Al
we recognise the mighty role that women play in driving development and growth in our country.
M
y name is Lindy-Lou Alexander, and I am Standard Bank’s Brand Marketing Group Head for Consumer and High Net Worth Clients as well as Business and Commercial Clients. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the Standard Bank Top Women 2021 Virtual Awards.
WOMAN: WITHOUT HER, MAN IS NOTHING. This sentence has been used by English teachers and professors over the decades to demonstrate the power of punctuation. However, it can also be used to communicate an undeniable truth: In many ways, women are the cornerstone of our society, today and every day. Far too often, this goes unacknowledged. At Standard Bank, however,
As such, we believe that empowering women can accelerate growth in Africa. We also recognise the positive societal and economic impact made by phenomenal females by sponsoring initiatives like the Top Women Conference and Awards. Through our partnership with Top Women, we have an opportunity to not only identify, but celebrate female entrepreneurs who are making considerable strides in their respective industries. This has a positive knock-on effect for the communities in which they operate. Standard Bank Group is a purpose-driven company, and we define that purpose as: Africa is our home, we drive her growth. It immediately follows that, as Africa’s largest financial services company, we have a responsibility to play a leading role in empowering women as this remains critical to unlocking growth on the continent. Our involvement in initiatives, such as that of Top Women, demonstrates
Standard Bank Top Women Awards 2021 | 08
our commitment to supporting women and driving gender diversity and inclusive economic empowerment in Africa. These initiatives address issues of inequality internally, as well as in the broader corporate landscape, to ensure women bridge the gender gap and can participate in creating shared value in society and the economy. In this way, we are moving to make our mark as a bank that invests in people’s dreams and encourages diverse economic change in the societies in which we operate. By renewing our partnership with Topco Media for this conference, we have affirmed our ongoing commitment to advocating for and driving women empowerment in South Africa. Our relationship with the Top Women event dates back to 2014. Over the seven years of this partnership, the conference has grown in stature, and today I am proud to say that it is one of the leading platforms for impactful conversations about the advancement of women in South Africa.
lexander | It is during these conversations that we acknowledge the most sustainable and successful gender empowerment strategies employed by organisations across all sectors. The challenge of enabling opportunities for females and driving gender diversity is a monumental task, and one that cannot be tackled alone. An ecosystem involving multiple players will ultimately be key to driving development of women and gender equality on the continent. That is why we are a proud signatory of the UN Women’s He4She movement. This initiative requires its signatories to commit to actionable change within and outside of their organisations that align to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of gender equality. Perhaps one of the greatest, most controversial challenges associated with gender diversity, sits at an executive level. Globally, women occupy only 9% of Chief Executive positions and 23% of C-suite positions. As part of the He4She movement, we have committed that 40% of the group’s executive positions will be held by women by 2023.
Marketing Executive: Personal and Business Banking | Standard Bank
We are also creating opportunities and driving growth for female entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. African women, on average, make up 40% of the agricultural labour workforce and produce 70% of Africa’s food. However, many of these agripreneurs remain outside of the informal sector. To change this narrative, Standard Bank has formed partnerships with local farmer associations and cooperatives, relevant UN agencies and international aid agencies, to boost the agricultural economy, improving livelihoods and that of food security on the continent. This effort of driving support for female entrepreneurs is bolstered by another Standard Bank initiative in partnership with The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) – the African Women Impact Fund initiative (AWIF). The AWIF Initiative has been established with the aim of uplifting female-owned and managed asset management firms and providing a defined economic stimulus to achieve sustainable economic growth
in Africa. The fund, the first of its kind, aims to raise up to $1 billion over 10 years (€910 million or R19 billion) for women fund managers, who in turn will invest in highimpact businesses and projects across the continent, thus driving entrepreneurship. These initiatives demonstrate that Standard Bank is more than just a financial institution that gives its customers the tools and solutions to improve their everyday banking needs. Standard Bank is a proudly African organisation, and we have always been mindful of the socioeconomic challenges that face the communities we operate in. We believe that by providing the right support, we can help people’s dreams come to life. Ultimately, it is these dreams that fuel growth on the continent and drive prosperity for communities. I have no doubt that everyone who has made the time to be here today will be left inspired by the various discussions that highlight the significant positive strides that women are taking, serving as inspiration for others to come.
