WATER IS A REALLY PRESSING ISSUE IN SOUTH AFRICA:
• The country has half the average global rainfall and is projected to have a 17% water deficit by 2030.
• The national response has been to attempt to maintain healthy catchment areas which support 50% of the population, 64% of the South African economy, and supplies 70% of irrigated agriculture.
• Outeniqua, located just outside George, is the only location in Africa suitable for growing hops, a particularly water-intensive crop threatened by a rapid spread of invasive alien vegetation in the area.
• In areas like Outeniquoa, alien vegetation is projected to reduce water run-off by 45%, and use up to 60% available water during dry seasons and droughts.
• Alien vegetation also increases the risk of wildfire for local communities. This is particularly concerning considering the climate crisis has increased the probability of wildfire in the area by 300%.
THE PARTNERSHIP WITH WWF STARTED WITH THE SOUTH AFRICAN BREWERIES (SAB) AND HAS EXPANDED INTO OUR OTHER ABINBEV MARKET
Incorporating water stewardship into SAB’s corporate strategy not only contributes to ecological preservation, but drives communities’ economic resilience and well-being.
The long-term engagement has resulted in significant improvements in Outeniqua, with invasive plants being kept in check and producing promising results.
Specific achievements include:
• The removal of alien infestation from over 2 000 hectares and the restoration of diverse indigenous vegetation and ecosystems.
• A total of 10 billion litres of water per annum has been released by clearing invasive alien plants and restoring the indigenous vegetation.
• Alignment to government’s goal of the conservation and effective management of water and biodiversity
• A significant reduction in the risk of intense wildfires, protecting local
“In areas like Outeniquoa, alien vegetation is projected to reduce water run-off by 45%, and use up to 60% available water during dry seasons and droughts.”
“10 billion litres of water have been released”
“Our partnership with SAB demonstrates the value of sustained investment and engagement - maintaining and steadily expanding improvements in water yield to over 10 billion litres of water which benefits both local farmers and water stressed downstream communities.”
- Caroline Gelderblom (WWF South Africa)THE OBJECTIVE NOW IS TO MAINTAIN WITH THE PROGRESS ACHIEVED THROUGH PARTNERSHIP
WE WILL CONTINUE TO:
• COLLABORATE with local government and communities to ensure long-term sustainability of our interventions
• INVEST in our programmes to maintain and expand impact
• MEASURE & monitor the impact of our activities, and use the findings to make evidence-based decisions
• EMPOWER and train teams to tackle the most high-risk infested areas
LESSONS LEARNED
• STRONG PARTNERSHIPS are key to sustainable and successful project implementation
• LOCALISING MANAGEMENT is key to obtaining buy-in and commitment from local communities and land owners
• LOCAL LEADERS are key in driving adoption of best practices
• MITIGATION PLANS for natural events like wildfires are key to safeguarding our water resources and protecting communities
“SAB will ensure the protection and sustainability of catchment areas by driving collaboration and strengthening relationships with our local communities”

Restoring dignity, health and hygiene for our future generations.
The future of sustainable sanitation is here.
Mr. Lukas Pieter Fourie aged 66 founded Betram (Pty) Ltd in 1986 and for the past 33 years developed a passionate involvement in bringing about high quality, sustainable solutions to the communities of our country and abroad. Sanitation is their core business and through commitment and extensive investment in research and development they were able to “Close the Sanitation Loop”. His passion for sanitation has resulted in the role out of technology to international markets in order to meet their millennium development goals at highly affordable rates ahead of time.
Revolutionising sanitation and building healthier nations
The world is facing a sanitation crisis. The lack of safe, sustainable sanitation solutions impacts the health, dignity, and well-being of countless communities—especially in rural areas where technology, infrastructure, awareness and financial resources are limited.
Amalooloo has spent over two decades researching and developing a unique and holistic sanitation system. Through extensive research and development, we understand that the core issue with current technologies is their inability to safely and effectively treat human waste on-site. For years, Amalooloo has run pilot projects in various communities to ensure the viability and adaptability. The Amalooloo Dry Sanitation System is a groundbreaking approach that closes the sanitation loop and empowers the community.
On top of the lack of sanitation facilities, many parts of the world struggle with the effects of drought, exposing people to even greater health risks, including disease outbreaks.
The Amalooloo is more than a technological solution. It includes the collection, storage, safe management, treatment, and disposal of human excreta, which can be safely returned back into the soil as groundfiller or fertiliser, creating nutrient-rich soil conditions for vegetable gardens that need a minimum amount of water. The water from the handwash basin in the Amalooloo is reused to rinse and clean the pedestal, and irrigate the ecological garden via drip irrigation. In this way, the Amalooloo is a holistic,
sustainable and eco-friendly sanitation solution with great health and hygiene benefits. Addressing the sanitation crisis requires more than a technological fix, it requires a fundamental change.
We have identified seven important pillars that help us ensure that Amalooloo not only functions, but excels in the environment: design, manufacturing, transportation, installation, education, communication, and maintenance. Amalooloo’s approach is a comprehensive sanitation solution that takes into account every aspect that contributes to a sustainable sanitation ecosystem.
We firmly believe that technology can only be as effective as the community that it serves. That is why Amalooloo engages and empowers communities, actively bridging the gap between the technology and the community by providing solutions that actually work for the people. Local community members assist in the implementation of Amalooloo, and some even educate the communities on a daily basis on health and hygiene matters. In this endeavour, the Amalooloo App is also updated with health and hygiene information every month and provides a critical connection between the end user and the manufacturer whereby the clients can log maintenance requests or order parts and accessories.
Sustainable change is about empowering people with knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions about their own well being. Amalooloo builds healthy nations, closes the sanitation loop and restores dignity through its safe, sustainable and eco-friendly sanitation solutions.
