11 MOST POPULAR COSMETIC PROCEDURES FOR MEN BY LUKE ARGUE

P

lastic surgery is increasingly becoming an everyday occurrence in our society. Plastic surgery’s applications are broad, ranging from purely cosmetic surgeries to correcting dangerous or impairing defects.

While it is sometimes overgeneralized and associated with women, men increasingly request plastic surgery. The demand by men for plastic surgery has increased to such a degree that in 2016, roughly 1.3 million men had cosmetic work done, which accounted for about 8% of 2016’s procedures.

not just aesthetics BY MALINA O. R.

here’s more behind fashion statements, from hairstyles and clothes to tattoos and piercing. If we think about it, piercings nowadays are exactly like those crazy long hairstyles back in the 60’s. The older generations might not understand it, but we know what it stands for in our hearts. It’s much more than just a ring in our noses or ears.

A FIRST GLANCE AT THE PIERCING One in four young adults has a piercing in other areas besides the earlobe. Ear and nose piercings are a way of self-expression and a boost in self-confidence. Beth A. Kapes, a professional in communications and an award winning writer, states that as with any fashion statement or aesthetics, piercings are a form of art shared by people from all generations, mostly the “youngsters.” The unique aspect of ear and nose piercings compared to other fashion statements is that people have been piercing their ears from the beginning of time. From primitive tribes to royalty, the practice is wellestablished as our ears have become another part of our body that we style and accessorize.

Top Doctor Magazine / Issue 148 / 15

HEALTH BENEFITS Aside from aesthetics, nose or ear piercings can also enhance your physical health. Piercing your body resembles the practice of acupuncture. If you get some particular area of your body pierced, especially the left nostril, you will notice that some functions within the body regulate themselves.

Period Pain Piercing your left nostril can help reduce menstrual symptoms such as cramps and nausea. If you don’t want to pierce your nose, getting a piercing in the rook (i.e., the cartilage area in the middle of the ear) has the same effects.

Migraines Because it is a body area with more than 200 acupoints, piercing the ear has definite health benefits. For example, piercing the daith (i.e., the inner cartilage fold in the ear) is said to relieve headaches and migraines.

Vitality as a Whole The left nostril is quite the spot for relieving pain. Getting your left nostril pierced when you are run down can improve your mood and give you a boost of confidence. Maybe all you need is a change in your look.

A PARTING REMINDER Nose and ear piercings are starting to play a big part in this world. Nowadays, it’s a normal thing to see someone on the street with a septum or ear piercing. Piercings and their message encourage even more young adults to get one.

Thinking about a rhinoplasty? 5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

WORDS BY ANN Y.

I

f you don’t want the aesthetics of your nose, a rhinoplasty is the best option to take. Ranked the third most common

facial plastic surgery procedure in the U.S., a rhinoplasty can help improve your breathing and achieve a balanced facial appearance. If you are thinking about undergoing a rhinoplasty or a ‘nose job,’ there are some insights that you have to know before diving into the process.

DETERMINE IF RHINOPLASTY IS THE RIGHT PROCEDURE FOR YOU First, ask yourself why you need a rhinoplasty. Aside from improving nasal

such as a nasal spray. However, if the problem persists, rhinoplasty is the next big step. Rhinoplasties can be covered by health insurance when done for medical reasons unless they are cosmetic rhinoplasties, which aren’t covered by insurance. So, if you’re considering a medical rhinoplasty, now is the time for you to correct a nasal hump, refine the tip of the nose and improve nose asymmetries.

2

THE AIM IS TO ENHANCE AND IMPROVE NOSE FUNCTIONALITY The goal of a successful rhinoplasty is to improve the appearance of your

nose rather than to replace it. Surgery can improve the form and profile of the nose, as well as correct crookedness and drooping, but it won’t give you perfect symmetry or a magazine-ready, superstar nose. Go in with realistic expectations and seek out a surgeon who will try to enhance rather than replace your nose.

Doctor-Patient Relationships and the Practice of Neurology

D

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. ANDREA ABOUSAMRA by Gaye Newton

eveloping an excellent doctor-patient relationship helps the patient in their journey to recovery. Dr. An-

drea Abousamra, DO, has embraced this philosophy in her neurology practice. Dr. Abousamra is a neurologist at the Michigan Institute for Neurologic Disorders (MIND),

where her work focuses on headaches, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and dementia. MIND is

a premier provider of neurological care for

diagnosing, treating and managing disorders of the brain, spine and nervous system.

Dr. Abousamra’s entire career path has been in Michigan, where she grew up and was educated. She went to undergrad at Oakland University in

THE PRACTICE OF NEUROLOGY Dr. Abousamra decided that there was something exceptional about the practice of neurology. “I find neurology in itself to be unique in the sense that you use your physical exam and your history-taking skills to make a diagnosis. Modern medicine has shifted away from physically examining patients and more towards relying on diagnostic tools and test results. I love that in neurology you have to combine both to reach a proper diagnosis,” Dr. Abousamra said. There is a great deal of diversity in the patients she treats and their conditions. What she finds most fulfilling, though, is the relationships with them.

what we know about headaches. This research has promoted the development of novel disease-specific treatments, such as monoclonal antibodies. • Influenced by the pandemic, sleep telemedicine services have become valuable and popular for patients with sleep disorders.

“There are new treatments coming out that are making quite a difference. There’s a new Alzheimer’s drug that’s been a long time coming. We have come a long way in treating multiple sclerosis and primary headache syndromes. So, there are always these advances and research going on. There are more options now and better outcomes for patients. They are living more normal lives as compared to 20 years ago. It’s definitely evolving,” Dr. Abousamra said.

A PARTING REMINDER With more options for treatment and a better chance at the best outcomes, Dr. Abousamra has even more to offer her patients and more with which to bond with them. She will continue to keep her patients well informed about their healthcare and help them understand what is available to them. Her advice for others entering the profession: experience is key. “Learn, read and see as much as you can. Even if you’re not in residency yet, shadow someone and do as much as you can in whatever area interests you. Stay motivated and you will achieve your goals,” Dr. Abousamra said. Dr. Abousamra believes her native Michigan has much to offer new neurologists. “Neurology is up and coming with lots of opportunities. If you’re here in Michigan, neurology is an excellent field with plenty of opportunity, that’s for sure,” Dr. Abousamra concluded.

MED STUDENTS CAN HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE POLICY WORDS BY LUKE ARGUE

eing a med student is hard. You’re forced into a rigorous academic environment, often swamped with debt and entrenched in what can often feel

like meaningless busywork. Amid all this difficulty, it is essential that med students not overlook the unique ways to help shape the future of health care policy. Given the proper motivation, med students have numerous opportunities to create health care policies long before graduation.

WHY MED STUDENTS SHOULD HELP SHAPE HEALTH CARE POLICY Getting involved in shaping health care policy benefits the professional development of med students. Furthermore, it will allow them to make a tangible impact even before they earnestly begin patient care. For professional development, students in the medical field gain invaluable experience with the way American health care works under systems like the Affordable Care Act. Pre-med students can also gain a unique professional advantage by strengthening their medical school applications by creating journal articles and other works. Beyond the professional opportunities this presents, students can voice their opinions to policymakers by working in health care policy fields and publishing reviews and articles on the subject. Something as simple as working with a single policymaker could domino into a significant change in health care policy.

V I TA M I N THE KEY I TO HEALTH

t’s easy to be overwhelmed by the number of vitamins and supplements available on the market.

Read the labels on a few of them, and you begin to get the impression that every single one is critical

WORDS BY NATHAN PIPKIN

to your health! When caught in this avalanche of

information, it can be challenging to determine which vitamins will be most helpful to integrate into your health routine.

32

WHAT IS VITAMIN D? Vitamin D is naturally produced by our bodies when we come into contact with sunlight. You can add specific foods and supplements, which can boost the effects of vitamin D on your body. The primary benefits of vitamin D are healthy bone and tooth growth, but it also plays a critical role in regulating the function of your immune system. Vitamin D increases your body’s ability to fight disease, especially severe flu symptoms or heart disease. Scientific research suggests that vitamin D plays a role in our mental health as well. Interpreting that research is tricky because it creates a chicken-and-egg situation. Suppose individuals who experience depression spend an unusual amount of time indoors. In that case, we should expect them to have lower levels of sunshineinduced vitamin D. At the same time, though, would those lower vitamin D levels amplify symptoms of depression? Though the research is inconclusive at this point, it is safe to assume that vitamin D might be one of the reasons that spending time outdoors is so beneficial to our mental health.

CAN VITAMIN D HELP ME FIGHT COVID-19? Although not a cure-all, vitamin D and its role in improving immune function have prompted many scientists to wonder if it might help ward off the COVID-19 infection. A recent study from Israel has examined the connection between vitamin D and COVID-19. After examining 253 patients in a local hospital, the study concluded that individuals who had vitamin D deficiencies before getting infected were 14 times more likely to develop severe COVID-19. Individuals with high vitamin D levels were more likely to contract moderate cases of COVID-19. Most research on the relationship between vitamin D and COVID-19 is plagued by the same problem faced by studies of vitamin D and depression.

Top Doctor Magazine / Issue 148 / 33

It’s challenging to find evidence that suggests vitamin D deficiencies have contributed to COVID-19 infections. Scientists might just be finding these qualities in overlapping populations without any relationship. However, without conclusive scientific evidence in these areas, we know that vitamin D is vital to our overall health.

HOW CAN I GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF VITAMIN D? The

most

valuable

piece

of

advice

for

determining the correct dosage of anything is to consult your doctor. Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, ingesting too much of it via supplementation could ultimately be harmful. What’s more, the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity don’t show up immediately. Instead, these symptoms only manifest after months or years. The safest course of action is to consume fewer than 100 micrograms per day before consulting your doctor. An alternative to supplements is to look for vitamin D in your diet. The best foods for those looking to boost their vitamin D intake are salmon, canned tuna, egg yolks and orange juice.

A PARTING REMINDER Whether you get it from a supplement, diet or spending time outdoors in sunny weather, vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for your overall health! Your immune system, teeth, bones and emotional health all have the potential for improvement. Although research is inconclusive for now, you might have a better chance of warding off COVID-19 with healthy vitamin D levels. So, consider integrating more vitamin D into your health habits!

STRESS kill

YOU? WORDS BY LUKE ARGUE

S

tress is more or less normalized in the lifestyles of most Americans. Whether it’s college students or adults in the workplace, most Americans have seemingly accepted stress and seek to cope instead of rejecting stress as a

necessary component of their lives. A study in 2017 not-

ed that 71% of people reported at least one symptom of stress over the past month.

Our willingness to accept stress into our daily lives reveals how little we understand stress’ effect on our lives. Stress is not a benign yet negative emotion; it’s a serious mental illness with serious effects on our physical health.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH Mental and physical health are not as separated as we believe. The mind affects the body and vice versa. Nowhere is this truest than with poor mental health and stress. Suffering from long-term or chronic stress can significantly harm one’s physical health. Our body is prepared to respond to stress but ultimately is not designed to sustain for long. When under stress, our body releases cortisol and other stress hormones as a response. This is also understood as your body’s “fight or flight” system. However, staying in this “fight or flight” mode can be dangerous for your physical health. Our mental health, particularly our stress levels, severely affects our bodies.

Top Doctor Magazine / Issue 148 / 37

HOW STRESS HARMS YOUR BODY The adverse effects of stress are often manifested in physical conditions that most of us associate with physical illnesses, from digestive issues to headaches. Indeed, stress can negatively affect nearly every part of your body, including your nervous, respiratory, digestive, muscular and reproductive systems. Chronic stress causes irritability and anxiety, breathing difficulties, soreness in your muscles, or even erectile dysfunction for men and missed periods for women. Furthermore, stress also increases your risk for heart disease. Stress’s negative impact doesn’t stop at the body’s functional

systems. A

For the average man, suffering from heavy stress will remove half the life expectancy of a heavy smoker. While heavy stress is still not as dangerous as smoking, just the fact that it is so close to the leading cause of life

illnesses down the road.

expectancy reduction should give us all pause.

HOW STRESS AFFECTS YOUR LIFE EXPECTANCY

TIPS FOR MANAGING STRESS

Stress can remove years from your life expectancy. A study of risk factors for life expectancy found that, on average, stress takes about 2.8 years off the life of the average man and 2.3 for the average woman. By comparison, the study noted that the leading causes for men are smoking and diabetes, which take 6.6 and 6.5 years, respectively.

The American Heart Association notes some helpful strategies: • Positive self-talk; • Developing stress-stopping strategies; • Engaging in healthy habits. These tips are designed to reinforce yourself against anxiety, help you avoid down spiraling into stress behavior and build healthy habits to strengthen your body and mind.

A PARTING REMINDER Stress may be a mind game, but the best ways to combat it are not necessarily mental. By developing more than just mental strategies, exercising physically or simply closing down your laptop for a day, you can gain a valuable advantage in your mental war. Stress is not something that we should normalize. It is just as dangerous as any other habit which can threaten our health, and we must treat it accordingly.

VIRTUAL FITNESS WORDS BY NATHAN PIPKIN

R

egular exercise is a critical component of maintaining overall health. But with the pressure of work and the

ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it can be challenging to find opportunities for serious exercise. Even if you can find time in your schedule to visit a gym, there’s no guarantee that your local establishments will be open to visitors. But there is hope! Virtual fitness may be the definitive solution to these problems.

WHAT IS VIRTUAL FITNESS? Virtual fitness takes the form of online classes. It’s no surprise that the business of providing virtual fitness classes has boomed in recent years. With a wide range of high-quality options to choose from, there’s never been a better time to practice this type of personal fitness. First, ensure that you have the materials necessary for a successful virtual workout session. In terms of space, the best practice is to identify a room in your house that will be most convenient for the workout. An area of privacy and sufficient lighting is preferable. The other major ingredient is technology. Will you be logging on through a phone, laptop or television? Some experts recommend using a TV since it provides a larger screen to enhance the sense of participation with the other members of your class.

Foods to Eat Every Day WORDS BY PETER C.

T

he benefits of eating healthy include improved energy levels, better mental clarity and a

stronger immune system. But sometimes, it’s hard to know which foods are the healthiest to eat. What we do know is that five foods are imperative to a healthy diet: berries, nuts, lean grass-fed beef, cruciferous vegetables and olive oil.

Top Doctor Magazine / Issue 148 / 51

1

Berries Berries are some of the healthiest fruits on the planet. They are packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and they have a wide variety of health benefits. A study has shown that the consumption of berries has a positive effect on cardiovascular health. Berries are a great source of fiber, which can help with weight loss and digestion. They are also a good source of vitamin C, boosting your immune system and helping fight off infection. Berries are also high in antioxidants, which help protect your body from disease.

Nuts Nuts are packed with protein, fiber and healthy fats, making them a perfect snack for people looking to stay healthy. In addition to being good for you, nuts are also delicious and versatile. They can be eaten on their own, added to salads and other dishes or used in baking. There are many different types of nuts, each with its own unique set of benefits. Some of the most popular nuts include almonds, walnuts, pistachios and cashews. Recent research has indicated that tree nuts are very beneficial for cardiovascular health. The study found that those who regularly consume tree nuts have a lower risk of coronary heart disease and other associated health problems.

3 52

Lean Grass-fed Beef Lean grass-fed beef is an excellent source of protein that has many health benefits. Grass-fed beef is lower in fat and calories than grain-fed beef, and it has a higher concentration of healthy omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains more antioxidants and vitamins than grain-fed beef. Grass-fed beef is typically leaner than grain-fed beef, and it has a more tender texture. Grass-fed beef also contains higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is believed to help fight cancer.

2

Cruciferous Vegetables There are many benefits to eating cruciferous vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables, a member of the cabbage family, contain broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale and cauliflower. Cruciferous vegetables are rich in nutrients and antioxidants. They are a good source of fiber, vitamins C and K and minerals like potassium and magnesium. Cruciferous vegetables also contain compounds called phytochemicals, such as glucosinolates, indoles and isothiocyanates, with proven benefits for health in preventing several forms of cancer.

5

4

Olive Oil Extra virgin olive oil is a type of olive oil made from pure, coldpressed olives. It is the highest quality olive oil available and has many health benefits. Extra virgin olive oil is monounsaturated fat, lowering bad cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease. A study has shown that a Mediterranean diet with olive oil is better for cardiovascular health than a low-fat diet. It is also rich in antioxidants, which can help to

protect against cell damage and reduce the risk of cancer.

If you’re looking for something new to add to your diet, these foods might be an excellent place to start.

A Parting Reminder It’s essential to make healthy choices every day, including what you eat. If you’re looking for something new to add to your diet, these foods might be an excellent place to start. So, eat healthily and feel great!

Mental health, which is often pushed to the side, is vital and must be prioritized due to its effect on physical and emotional health.

WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH? Mental health is an essential component of overall health, since it encompasses everything humans feel, think and act. It can be easy to forget to take care of mental and emotional health due to life’s chaos. While mental health issues such as depression are common, there are ways to help overcome these issues or even decrease them to live a happier life.

WHAT IS PHYSICAL HEALTH? When they consider the word “health,” the first thing people think of is physical health, which involves exercise and a healthy diet. However, physical health involves more than just that. Physical health also involves things like getting enough sleep and rest. Sleep, rest, exercise and healthy food choices all lead to a healthier body.

HOW TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE There are many things to do to live a healthier life, such as sleeping, making health-conscious food choices, exercising regularly, relaxing and de-stressing and creating a safe and healthy community of people: • Making healthy food choices can lead to a

Chronic malnutrition results from inadequate nutrition over a long period, leading to linear growth failure.

MALNUTRITION TYPES: ACUTE MALNUTRITION, CHRONIC MALNUTRITION AND ACUTE AND CHRONIC MALNUTRITION Malnutrition types are acute malnutrition (wasted), chronic malnutrition (stunted) and a combination of both (thinner and shorter). Malnutrition manifests itself in two ways: wasting and stunting. Stunting is a chronic condition whose causes are unknown. Stunting is rather prevalent in less-developed countries, and it usually poses no immediate threat to life. Acute malnutrition is a type of undernutrition induced by a drop in food consumption or illness, which causes weight loss or fluid retention. As a result, a person who is in acute malnutrition can appear thinner than usual. This can range from mild, moderate or severe and prolonged malnutrition can

have limited access to fresh fruits, vegetables, lowfat dairy products, protein-rich food and whole grains, and it will be hard for them to eat a healthy diet and avoid malnutrition. In addition, some people are not diet-conscious and eat large amounts of food that contain too much sodium, added sugars, saturated fats and calories but not the right amounts of nutrients. Choose the right food that limits sodium and calories from saturated fats, and be sure to consume a variety of foods that includes vegetables, fruits, grains, protein and low-fat dairy. Opt for healthy beverages without added sugars, such as soft drinks and fruit juices. The key is to choose drinks that provide nutrients. Uneven food distribution is a critical issue for the entire human population since it jeopardizes food security. Food insecurity occurs when a person is

unable to receive a sufficient amount of healthy food on a daily basis because they do not consume enough food each day. People suffering from food insecurity experience persistent hunger and poor nutrition, making them less likely to live healthy and productive lives.

HOW TO COMBAT FOOD INSECURITY Food insecurity is a global problem, and governments and international organizations have tried everything to combat it. However, there are some possible solutions to food insecurity. One of the solutions is to reduce food waste. Yearly global food waste amounts to 1.3 billion tons. Food is wasted because of inadequate food preparations and inadequate food storage. Without these problems, there will be more food security. There are ways to help people who are food insecure, for example, food donation in a collective way, such as the United Way of Central Florida, working with dozens of local organizations to fight against hunger. Food-insecure households rely on donated food from food pantries to help them stretch their budgets. To boost access to healthy food, focus your donations on healthy items like proteins and whole grains. There are a lot of organizations that accept food donations, especially non-perishable food items.

A PARTING REMINDER As an individual, you can contribute to the food-insecure population. Some people are less privileged when it comes to choosing the right kind of food rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Lend a hand by food donation and avoid food waste in your own kitchen. Support an organization that focuses on helping against hunger and malnutrition. Your contribution to ending malnutrition and hunger makes a difference.

is crucial to take in varying amounts of vitamins and minerals, such as zinc, iron, copper, folate and selenium and vitamins such as A, B 12, B 6, C, D and E in order to maintain a functional immune system. Some studies have found that a high dose of zinc salts can lead to significant improvements in only one day of treatment after contracting COVID-19. Research suggests the immuno-protection of many of these nutrients is based on their antioxidant capacity (oxidation is a chemical reaction that can damage cells), which is lost if consumed in excess. While very little research shows which specific supplement can increase the immune system, vitamin C has been proven as a great way to treat or prevent any viral infections. Vitamin C’s daily recommended dietary allowance is 90 milligrams for men and 75 milligrams for women.

Lifestyle Changes COVID-19 radically changed lives. It has been proven to cause significant impacts on health, including changes in eating patterns, sleeping habits and physical activity. Research has shown that COVID-19 has put a strain on mental, emotional and physical health. Doctors suggest several essential lifestyle changes to keep from serious effects and symptoms of COVID-19. Doctors suggest prioritizing at least these three things: • Exercise; • Sleep; • A balanced diet. Exercise can significantly impact overall health, which is why it should be prioritized. However, it can also be a struggle to do something as simple as working out, especially since COVID-19 shut down the world, and the world is still recovering from its effects. Staying

physically active is more difficult to do as a result but essential. The more physically active a person is, the lower their risk of contracting a severe illness. Sleep is also vital since it helps heal the immune system. Isolation was proven to promote sedentary behaviors that affect mental and physical health, and fear and anxiety have also been linked to impacting overall health. Therefore, it is essential to sleep, exercise and eat the right foods. Research suggests that even people who have recovered from COVID-19 still suffer from its effects, including fatigue, headaches and shortness of breath. However, resting and eating can successfully battle these side effects.

A Parting Reminder While COVID-19 has significantly changed the world, people are adapting and trying to go back to the way life used to be. However, as businesses come back to life and schools are in session, it is still vital to stay healthy and do whatever is necessary to keep from contracting COVID-19. People stumbled through 2020 with confusion, sadness and anxiety, but now, armed with an understanding of the virus and what can minimize its effects, people can go through 2022 with a weapon. These weapons — a good diet, lifestyle changes, vitamins and supplements — are ones that can turn the tide in this battle against COVID-19.

A LIFE INTERRUPTED AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. PARUL MAKKAR BY GAYE NEWTON

n March 2021, a young, talented dentist passed away at age 34 from oral cancer. While battling this illness, he sold his dental practice and began writing a series of blogs about his experience. His writings made it clear

that he had accepted what life had given him, found peace and offered his readers words of comfort and wisdom. After his passing, his sister, a talented dentist herself, compiled his blogs and published them in a book, Life Interrupted: Dr. Dua’s Survival Guide. That incredible young man was Dr. Manu Dua, and his sister was Dr. Parul Dua Makkar. In the year since her brother’s passing, Dr. Makkar has devoted much of her time to honor his memory. In addition to publishing the book, she advocates for awareness and early detection of oral cancer.

For decades, the typical demographic was primarily men over 40 who regularly use alcohol and tobacco. But younger people have joined the demographic. There is already evidence that vaping may contain carcinogens.

An Advocate for Early Detection The most significant factor in beating oral cancer is early detection. But there is little public awareness and no national screening program. Dr. Makkar is working to change that. In a recent interview, she reminded people, especially the youth, that oral cancer is on the rise and that attention to symptoms is imperative.
