Beat the Holiday Blues Grief and depression can worsen at this time of year, but that doesn't have to stop seasonal celebration Celebrating is the last thing some people feel like doing during the holiday season. "The holidays can be an especially difficult time for people who are depressed or grieving," Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein, president and CEO of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, said in a foundation news release. "People who are sad or lonely often feel out of sync when everyone else seems to be celebrating, and the holidays can exacerbate these feelings," he explained. If you are depressed, don't try to deal with it on your own. If you are not in treatment, seek help. If you are already receiving treatment, it's especially important to continue during the holidays, he said. "The holidays are challenging for many people, but symptoms of depression are a sign to seek professional help. The most important take-home message is that depression is treatable and people should not suffer in silence; they should seek help," Borenstein said. People who are depressed tend to isolate themselves. Instead, they should try to go to a party or family gathering even if they're not in the mood, he suggested. Don't have unrealistic expectations about the holidays, because that can lead to disappointment, Borenstein said. Holidays can also bring up long-standing family issues. Try to set them aside, he suggested. Instead, try to focus on things that make you happy and be thankful for the good relationships you have. It's also important to get regular exercise, which can help improve your mood. Some people who feel sad during the holidays turn to alcohol, but that's a mistake. Alcohol is a depressant and can increase depression, anxiety and stress. Another potential problem at this time of year is seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a form of depression triggered by the lack of sunlight in winter. Treatments for SAD include light therapy, counseling and medications.
“Try to focus on things that make you happy

5 Tips for Managing Diabetes During the Holidays by Top Doctors
We know this season is for family, festivity, and food—lots of food. Temptations are all around, and parties and travel can disrupt daily routines. That means it's also the season when eating healthy, staying active, and taking medication on schedule is harder to do. Here are 5 tips to help you ring in the new year feeling good while staying on track.
1. Stick to Your Plan Managing your diabetes during the holidays should be the same as managing it every day, with a few exceptions. You won't always be able to control what food you're served, and you're bound to see other people indulging. Prepare for the extra challenges and you'll handle them well: Eat, be physically active, and take your medication close to the usual times. Invited to a party? Offer to bring a healthy dish along. If you have a sweet treat, cut back on other carbohydrates during the meal.
2. Stay in Control When you face a spread of delicious holiday food, you'll find healthy choices easier to make if you: Have a small plate of the foods you like. Start with vegetables to take the edge off your appetite. If you do have an alcoholic drink, have it with food.
3. Fit in Favorites You can have some of your favorite foods as long as you Slow down and savor your food. limit how big the portion is and how often you have it. Choose foods you really love and can't get any other time of year, like Aunt Edna's pecan pie. Indulge in a small serving, and make sure to count it in your meal plan.
4. Stay Active It's easy to put physical activity last on the list during the holiday rush, but being active is always time well spent. Get moving with friends and family, such as taking a walk after a holiday dinner. Being active can help make up for eating more than usual, and it reduces stress during one of the most stressful times of the year.
5. Get Enough Sleep If you go out more often and stay out later during the holidays, you're likely to get less sleep. Sleep loss can make it harder to control your blood sugar. And when you're sleep deprived, you'll tend to eat more, and prefer high-fat, high-sugar food. Aim for 7 to 8 hours per night to guard against mindless eating. Getting active is a good move for the whole family.
Most of all, remember what the season is about—celebrating and connecting with the people you care about. When you focus more on the fun, you won't focus as much on the food.
Is Food Addictive? Is price on food the reason behind increasing rates of obesity? by Dra. Ofelia Rodriguez
Hedonic Influences Eating is a pleasurable experience most of the time. Food companies know that foods need to “taste” good for them to sell well. The fast food companies are masters at providing “tasty” palatable foods that people like and at an affordable price. For some people, these “pleasurable” responses to overeating stimulate eating of more than is needed.
Price and Palatability We are all price sensitive; that is, we look for bargains. One way to get a bargain in food is through the amount of energy for your dollar. It is said that the cheapest foods are the ones with federal subsidies that are mass produced and can provide sugar and fat cheaply. You can get a day’s worth of calories (2000-3000) for a small amount of money. Fruits and vegetables, for which we aren’t using taxpayer dollars to support farm prices, are more expensive. However, the cheapest food, in my judgment, is not the best food. Getting chicken and fish, fruits and vegetables, and unrefined whole grains is worth the extra money-it will reduce the intake of the high fat, high sugar (fructose), highly refined foods that most experts think are related to the current epidemic. I want to help dispel the myth that healthy eating always means emptying our wallets. Below is a list of feel-good foods that are great for the body and even better for our budget. Protein:
Fruits:
Black beans, $0.30 cents per ½ cup serving, about $1 per can
Grapes, $0.75 per 1 cup serving, about $1.50 per pound
Chicken breasts, $0.75 per 4 oz serving, about $2.99 per pound
Apples, about $0.50 to $0.75 per apple
Canned salmon, $0.75 per serving, about $1.50 per can
Bananas, $0.20 to $0.50 per banana, about $0.60 per lb or $2 per bunch Kiwi, about $0.40 per kiwi
Canned tuna, $0.75 cents, about $1.50 per can
Cantaloupe, $0.50 per ½ cup serving, about $3 per small melon
Oats, $0.13 per serving, about $1 per pound (in bulk)
Watermelon, $0.30 per 1 cup serving, $5 per melon
Diary: Yogurt, about $1 per 6 oz cup Low-Fat Milk, $0.25 cents per cup, about $4 per gallon Cottage cheese, $0.88 per 1/2 cup serving, about $3.50 per 16 oz container Whole Grains:
Pears, $0.85 each, about $1.75 per pound (depending on variety) Oranges, $0.50 each, about $1 per pound (in family-sized pack) Veggies: Sweet potatoes, $0.50 each, about $1 per pound
Whole-grain pasta, $0.37 cents per ½ cup serving, about $3 per box
Broccoli, $0.50 per ½ cup serving, $2 per bunch
Brown rice, $0.18 per ¼ cup serving, about $2 per pound
Spinach, $0.50 per cup (raw), about $2 per bunch Carrots, $0.50 each, about $2 per pound Edamame, $0.50 per ½ cup serving, $3 per 10oz package (frozen)

Medical Doctorate Universidad Nacional Autonoma Mexico City, Mexico General Surgery Training University of West Virginia Wheeling Division Plastic Surgery Training Mercy Hospital Buffalo, New York Hand Fellowship University of New York at Buffalo Private Practice McAllen, Texas Since 1985
Dr. Armando Moncada has been in practice for 30 years. After finishing his training in Buffalo, New York, he moved to McAllen and opened his private practice. His training allowed him to perform a wide array of procedures, which made him a "popular" doctor in the ER.
From facial
trauma to hand trauma, any injury involving tendons and nerves, amputations, and then of course all the cosmetic procedures. Plastic surgery is not all glamorous. Plastic surgery began with the need for skin grafts post burns due to war time injuries. Skin grafts, flaps and wound care requiring microsurgery marked the beginning of plastic surgery. Now we just think of plastic surgery as cosmetic: breast implants, tummy tucks and liposuction, but reconstruction is the real basis.
I have raised my family in McAllen and have made my home here.
In practice today, cosmetic surgery is the main focus. We still treat patients in need of reconstruction, especially breast reconstruction. October is our big outreach month for breast cancer awareness. Breast reconstruction is possible at the time of mastectomy, in most cases. Tummy tucks are possible at the same time as hysterectomies, in most cases. These procedures can be coordinated between the surgeons and performed at the same time.
I have raised my family in McAllen and have made my home here. My love of family, work and golf have flourished in the Valley. I also have a passion for philanthropy, specifically VAMOS. I have worked with the organization for 20 years and help organize the annual golf tournament that raises money for college scholarships. It is a very successful organization and I'm so proud to be a part of it.
All in all, its been a great 30 years of practice. Many challenging procedures make life very rewarding. I've had the pleasure of helping over 35,000 patients in my years in practice in McAllen. And the patients have come from far reaching places as well. I'm looking forward to many more years of practicing surgery and helping the people of the RGV.

Study shows Texas took unhealthy turn for the worse in 2015 by Top Doctors Physicians’ efforts to make Texans more healthy lost steam this year as the state continued to score near the back of the pack on measures such as obesity and lack of activity, according to an annual study released a days ago. In America’s Health Rankings, a composite index of more than 20 factors, Texas ranked 34th in overall health, down from 31st in 2014. The report, put out by United Health Foundation, showed that Texas had one of the largest declines among U.S. states for 2015. The foundation was established by UnitedHealth Group, parent of insurer UnitedHealthcare.
Strengths Few poor mental health days High rate of high school graduation Low prevalence of smoking
Challenges High percentage of uninsured population Low immunization coverage among children Large disparity in health status by education level
In the past year, disparity in health status by education level increased 20% from 28.3% to 34.0%. In the past 2 years, obesity increased 9% from 29.2% to 31.9% of adults. In the past 2 years, smoking decreased 20% from 18.2% to 14.5% of adults. In the past 2 years, poor mental health days decreased 17% from 3.6 to 3.0 days in the previous 30 days. In the past 20 years, cancer deaths decreased 9% from 201.3 to 182.3 per 100,000 population.
