EDITOR’S LETTER
WELcomE To THE DEcEmBER ISSUE oF coSmETIc NEWS. For many aesthetic practitioners changing their mentality from simply being a doctor, nurse or dentist to running and managing a business can be a challenge. While practitioners in the USA are used to being in private practice and viewing their customers as clients rather than patients, in the UK a vast majority of people who move into medical aesthetics do so from the NHS or other areas of medicine where having a strong business acumen is not a part of the job description. Aesthetics is a business and a competitive one at that as such we have dedicated this month’s issue to all things business related, from online marketing, insurance and customer service to finding the right location for your business and choosing the right software (pages 18-35). Also in this issue, Sam Dhatt writes about the plant cell breakthroughs that are impacting the skincare market (p36-38) and Elaine Stoddart explains the medical aesthetic applications of advanced electrolysis/AcP from skin tag and wart removal to treating telangiectasia, milia and a diverse range of skin abnormalities (p40-41). As well as this we give you 10 Good Reasons why you should visit the cosmetic News Expo 2011 (p14) and update you on the products and stories that are shaping our industry as part of our Industry News (pages 6-8) and Product News (p44). on behalf of all of the team here at cosmetic News I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy christmas and a prosperous 2011.

CETApHIL®
Out and about in the industry this month from the BODY conference to the Pelleve launch and the unveiling of Lesley Reynolds’ new book
Like most women cleansing is a big part of my skincare regime however most cleansers remove more than they should, stripping away the skin’s own natural protective oils and doing more harm than good over time. So when I heard about Cetaphil®, a new range of cleansing and moisturising products that have been clinically proven to remove only what your skin does not need, preserving its naturally protective oils and maintaining a normal ph balance, I was keen to give it a go.

SuRGICaRE GOES INTO aDmINISTRaTION Cosmetic surgery group Surgicare has been sold after falling into administration. Joint administrators chris Ratten and Jeremy Woodside at RSm Tenon, who were appointed to the business on october 29, said the firm was hit by a fall in trade. The business has been acquired for an undisclosed sum by The Hospital medical Group, based in Bromsgrove, through a new vehicle, RAm1001. The deal has saved 37 jobs at Surgicare. mr Ratten, who is head of recovery at RSm Tenon, said, “We are pleased to have secured the successful sale of Surgicare and certain assets, as it means that a significant number of people will remain in work, and that they will be able to fulfil existing obligations to patients currently receiving treatment.” In its last reported accounts for the year to December 31 2008, Surgicare posted a turnover of £7m and a pretax loss of £1.3m.

mELaNIN pRODuCTION CONTROLLED BY mOLECuLaR SwITCH, maY aLLOw TRuE SuNLESS TaNNING A molecular switch that turns off the natural process of skin pigmentation has been discovered and may lead to a novel way of protecting the skin by activating the tanning process without exposure to cancercausing UV radiation. In a report in the journal Genes and Development, researchers from the massachusetts General Hospital (mGH) cutaneous Biology Research center (cBRc) described how blocking the action of the enzyme PDE-4D3 in the skin of mice led to a significant increase in melanin production. David Fisher, mD, PhD, director of the hospital’s Department of Dermatology told medical News Today that the primary goal of inducing melanin production in human skin would be prevention of skin cancer, since all the common forms are known to be associated with UV exposure, The researchers confirmed role of PDE-4D3 in controlling melanin expression by applying several agents that block PDE production to the skin of the transgenic mice with epidermal melanocytes. After five days of treatment, the animals’ skin had darkened significantly, while treament of control mice with no epidemal melanocytes produced no effect. “Although PDE enzymes degrade cAmP within all cells, different members of this enzyme family are active in different types of cells,” Fisher explains. “We showed that PDE-4D3 is particularly important within melanocytes, and while the enzyme may have a role in other cells, a blocking drug that is applied directly to the skin would probably have limited effects in other tissues.” Additional research is needed to

pELLEVé™ LAUNCH, THE WESTBURY HoTEL, LoNDoN London’s plush Westbury Hotel was the setting for the launch of pellevé™, the latest nonsurgical innovation from Sigmacon. Leading American facial plastic surgeon Michael Stampar and Dr Rita Rakus demonstrated the treatment to industry professionals and the press over the two-day event. The FDA-cleared skin tightening procedure uses advanced radiowave technology to precisely heat the deep layers of the skin without damaging the epidermis, or top layer. The heat causes the collagen in the skin to contract and tighten. After treatment, the skin begins to produce new

collagen, which improves skin firmness. The result is a naturally refreshed appearance. Unlike other skin tightening systems, Pellevé™ doesn’t require anesthesia or skin cooling, so patients can return home or to work immediately after the procedure. many people start to see results after just one treatment, with lasting improvement in skin tightness and tone for up to six months. Because a full facial treatment takes only about an hour with little, if any, recovery time, Pellevé™ fits easily into busy schedules. Dr Stamper raved about the treatment telling delegates that he would rather spend six hours doing Pellevé™ and talking to his clients than doing a facelift and that he had been achieving impressive results within his practice.

Voice of the Industry I don’t particularly like the saying ‘no pain no gain’ but in most instances it tends to be true. As someone who works in the aesthetics industry, I fully understand that in many cases the slightly more aggressive treatments are often the most effective and, as such, I don’t mind enduring the discomfort of being prodded with a needle or zapped with a laser, if its going to leave me wrinkle or hair free, however, what I do mind is being told a treatment is painless and non-invasive and then

being totally un-prepared for what is coming. I have fallen foul of this twice, once about four years ago when laser lipo first came out and was touted as ‘lunchtime lipo’ (didn’t feel so lunchtime when I was covered in bruises and swollen a week later) and once the other day when I went to try out a supposedly non-invasive cellulite treatment. Now this treatment had been promoted to me as being a quick and painless solution to getting rid of cellulite and when I met the nurse treating me she didn’t give me any more reason to be alarmed (describing the treatment as feeling like a deep tissue massage). I have had the cAcI Endermologie treatment for cellulite and tried out the Accent machine and both of those do feel like a deep tissue massage, however, unless you have visited a very sadistic masseur that is not a

description I would associate with this treatment in any way. In reality it felt like a combination between an aggressive laser treatment and being stabbed all over my legs with tiny little knifes. The shock of how much it hurt meant that I actually had to ask the nurse to stop treatment twice and refused to have the whole treatment done because it just wasn’t worth it. Now I think I have a fairly high pain threshold – I am a woman after all! II normally don’t make any fuss, even when I had a blood gas test in hospital (which by the way the doctor did tell me was going to hurt and I didn’t think was that bad). I have had my veins lasered before and been a pin-cushion on a sclerotherapy training course and I didn’t think anything could be as uncomfortable as that, but I was wrong. Had I been prepared for the fact this was going to hurt like hell I could have either decided that my cellulite wasn’t that bad after all and not have gone ahead with treatment or have gone with the ‘no pain no gain’ philosophy and geared myself up for it. I am not a paying customer however if I was I feel I would have been misssold that treatment and would not have been happy with parting with any cash. I actually left feeling a bit teary and embarrassed wondering whether it was just me that found it so awful if other people described it as a ‘deep tissue massage’ – that does not a great client experience make. The moral of the story is clinics and manufacturers need to be careful about what they claim about treatments. I would rather be told ‘this is going to hurt but it will have a dramatic result’ rather than being duped into thinking I am hopping up on the couch for a nice relaxing deep tissue massage only to find I am actually about to experience one of the most painful treatments I have ever had in my life. Lesson learned…

Today, karen has taken her art and improved upon it with her usual tenacity. “The original techniques were fine in their day and in America where the business first became popular, nothing has really changed. In the Uk, there is a sort of stigma attached to things, which are un-natural, so a block coloured eyebrow treatment says ‘look at me, I’ve had my brows done’. I felt that we could do things better and so I began working on the tools and techniques to create something that I felt was a vast improvement on this,” says karen.
AREOLA RECONSTRUCTION one of the areas in which karen has achieved greatest success is in the creation of areolas in patients who have undergone breast reconstruction surgery, usually after cancer treatment. Here, for many years surgeons attempted to address the issue of rebuilding nipples with skin, a technique that has limited success. However, karen took the existing treatment that used just four colours and developed a treatment that uses up to 10 colours in order to create the most realistic nipple

control Zoe Davitt asks, are you meeting the standards of service quality?
The care Quality commission (cQc) and its Standards of Safety and Quality are high on the agenda for virtually all health organisations at the moment, but while these focus largely on measurable standards, there are less tangible standards that your practice also needs to meet in order to thrive – those of your clients. Generally speaking, clients don’t tend to have the necessary knowledge to judge you on your safety standards, but the only knowledge they need to judge your service is their own expectations – and if you don’t match or exceed them, then your client will go elsewhere.
WHAT IS SERVIcE QUALITY? Service quality, from a marketing perspective, is defined as “the difference between what customers expect and what they perceive themselves to be receiving”. This concept of perceived service quality was introduced by renowned and well-respected service management and marketing academic Dr christian Grönroos in 1982, and he extended it further in the development of his widely cited model of service quality. uNDER COVER
Eddie Hooker, managing director of Hamilton Fraser Insurance, discusses the types of cosmetic insurance you should consider when establishing an aesthetic clinic
Getting the right insurance is essential for any new business. There will be some policies you may choose purely for peace of mind, such as insurance for equipment and stock, whereas others are a statutory requirement, including employer’s liability if you employ staff. Here is a summary of the different kinds of insurances typically needed by cosmetic clinics: Contents insurance – This covers not just equipment and machinery, but general fixtures and fittings, and furniture.
Eddie Hooker is managing director of Hamilton Fraser Insurance. Eddie and Hamilton Fraser first started to insure cosmetic practitioners as early as 1996 when they became involved with nurses practicing in collagen injections. Hamilton Fraser launched the UK’s first ‘aesthetics specific’ medical indemnity policy in 1998 and now insures more than 2,000 individual practitioners and businesses within the sector, growing by more than 100 new practitioners each and every month.
Computer insurance – Appointments and records systems can be sophisticated and expensive to replace. Include them in your cosmetic clinic/surgery insurance for peace of mind. public liability insurance – This is not the same as professional indemnity cover for negligence claims. Public liability covers the award of any damages given to a claimant, or member of the public, because of an accident that caused injury or damage caused by your business. While this element of cover is not required by law, all businesses with contact with the public should have adequate public liability insurance as claims can be very high indeed. Without cover, a large claim could potentially sink the organisation involved. Cost of any drugs and vaccines stored on the premises Pharmaceuticals are expensive and inconvenient to replace. In addition to the drugs themselves, the cover should also include loss of specialist medical supplies. Business interruption insurance – cover is provided for lost income of the cosmetic clinic in the event of an insured claim. In many instances it is not the actual claim that puts financial strain on a business but the loss of income whilst the business recovers from the claim. Employers’ liability – This is compulsory for anyone who is an employer. This cover is designed to protect you against claims made by your employees for any injury they have suffered as a result of their employment with you.
22
cosmeticnewsuk.com
Buildings insurance – If your cosmetic clinic premises are rented, check the lease to ascertain whether the landlord or the tenant is responsible for insuring the structure. Medical negligence insurance – covers cosmetic practitioners giving advice or providing cosmetic treatments. Professional indemnity insurance responds to claims arising from bodily injury, which may include its more intangible forms such as mental injury, distress or psychological harm. The injury can arise from treatment or advice or from a combination of the two. In addition, cover is provided for financial loss arising from the injury. As most medical professionals give treatments rather than advice or give a mixture of the two, there must be bodily injury in order to trigger a claim. Directors and officers insurance – Directors and officers of a limited company can be held personally liable for their actions in certain circumstances. You can purchase insurance to provide cover against this liability. Finally, when selecting your insurance cover consider the quality of service the provider is able to offer. A good provider will not necessarily be the cheapest but should be able to offer you a quality, specialist service and look after your policy from start to finish, including underwriting and dealing with claims. As part of its professional service, it should fully understand your business and specialist equipment/premises as a cosmetic practice, as well as having expert knowledge of your particular needs. choosing a non-specialist broker who does not have this expert knowledge could lead to you not receiving the best advice or therefore the best protection for your practice. The last thing you want in the event of a claim is to discover your policy is designed for offices not a salon, clinic or surgery and therefore your equipment or vaccines/drugs are not fully covered.

Research has shown that sterilisation alone will not kill CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) and the only way to ensure your instruments are free from CJD is for all used instruments to go through a washer decontaminator machine which meets the EN13795-20/30 standards and is connected to a reverse osmosis pump.
peter O'Neill has worked within the healthcare industry for more than 20 years, primarily managing large operating theatre departments and advising hospitals in both the NHS and private sector on various aspects of decontamination and infection control. As well as designing and commissioning three new hospital operating theatre divisions, including the new state of the art 400 bedded PFI hospital in kent. Peter sits on the European commission governing hospital decontamination and was instrumental in the design of the new European standards on decontamination, EN1397520/30. These new guidelines will affect all healthcare providers especially the private sector, as the guild lines make it impossible for clinics to reprocess their instruments unless they have very advanced decontamination systems on site which meet the EN1379520/30 standards.

T
he main problem for NHS and private healthcare providers is ensuring all re-usable instruments are protein free after cleaning and before sterilisation. Basically this problem has all come about because of the CJD virus. The European standard EN1379520/30 was brought about as the standard decontamination washing machine used in CSSD units in all NHS hospitals and clinics would not kill CJD. This meant new machines have to be put in place to meet the new European guidelines. It is now illegal to re-process your surgical instruments within your practice unless you have the new decontamination washer machines which meet the EN13795-20/30 guidelines. These machines are very expensive and also require a reverse osmosis pump, which is also very expensive, so in a nutshell another very expensive European guideline enforced to us in the Uk health sector. There are three solutions to your unit’s decontamination problem: (1) Purchase this very expensive piece of equipment (2) Send all your instruments off site to an accredited hospital or
a private super centre and hope all your instruments and sets come back!! (3) Use single-use instruments, which removes all legal responsibilities regarding the new decontamination guidelines from you back to the manufacturer. Now it is impossible for clinics to send their instruments and sets to nearby hospitals to wash and sterilise unless that hospital carries the accredited certificate that meets the EN137520/30 standard, and there are not many hospitals around that have this. complying with the rules requires practices exclusively to use single-use instruments, or send instruments to a fully accredited sterile services department, or a combination of both. The Healthcare commission will police whether standards are met. Anyone who reprocesses instruments in a unit that is not accredited for another person to use outside their hospital will be transferring the same legal responsibilities for the device to themselves and is FULLY RESPoNSIBLE for its safety and effectiveness, not the manufacturer who has produced and labelled the item Anyone who reprocesses or reuses a reprocessed single use instrument may be committing an offense or contravening the national
guidance on single use devices. The consumer protection act 1987 will hold a person liable if a single use item is re-used against the manufacturer’s recommendations. (mHRA DB:2006(04)oct 2006 Device bulletin Single –use medical Devices: Implications and consequences of Reuse). Anyone re-using or reprocessing a single use device is FULLY RESPoNSIBLE. When using disposable medical products, we need to be aware of our carbon footprint. When you look at the cost of disposing the single use device compared to re-processing the re-usable device, this is pretty much balanced. Taking into consideration the energy used for the washers and autoclaves and transportation, then when looking at single-use instruments the cost of incineration of clinical waste, it is kind of equal. You must aim to make your practice more environmentally friendly and the disposal of medical instruments is a particularly challenging area. The choice of whether to sterilise surgical equipment or use disposable surgical kits has environmental and cost implications from both angles. But all instruments used must comply with the medical Devices Directive.

THE x FACTOR Stephen Handisides asks whether your business marketing has the x factor
I’m sure most of you like watching The X Factor and have your favourite contestant(s), however even those of you who don’t watch it, have to admit that, because the dramas that unveil on the show are plastered all over the news the next day, you just can’t ignore it. But why is The X Factor so popular among millions of people in the Uk? Is it the music? Is it the stars who appear on it every week? or is it the personalities of the judges and the contestants that keep us wanting more? If you do watch the show you must have wondered how Wagner, the crazy Brazilian who talks rather than sings, gets voted for every week, while singers with actual talent get voted off – it is because he has the ‘X factor’ – something that people enjoy and like to watch week in, week out. hoosing the right premises for your future salon or clinic can be an exhausting exercise for a few reasons. The search process can delay the implementation of your business plan for many months if you do not know what to watch out for, on the other hand, you should take your time to make sure that you have taken due diligence to avoid any unpleasant surprises in the future.
When looking to set up an aesthetic practice you have a number of options: renting or buying premises or working from home/ as a mobile practitioner. Renting premises suits many businesses as most small businesses do not have the capital available to purchase their premises outright. Even if you can borrow money to finance the purchase, you may feel that you have better uses for your capital. We will not focus on a buying alternative this time as it is a separate subject. There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to renting, depending on exactly what you have agreed with the landlord. With a typical lease, you agree to occupy the premises for a fixed period and pay an agreed rent, though the lease may allow the rent to be reviewed periodically. You will most likely have to provide a refundable deposit and should also take into account legal and other professional fees. You may have significant maintenance and repair obligations, the lease may include other obligations and restrictions and you may also have difficulties if your needs change in due course and you want to move before the lease expires. If you do decide to rent premises, it is important to check exactly what the agreement says. If you are in any doubt, you should take legal advice. You should also be aware that you still have general legal responsibilities, such as looking after the health and safety of employees and visitors to your premises, though these responsibilities may be shared with the landlord.

MAxImISING YOuR potential pOTENTIaL your MAXimising Estetica Dental explain why investing in the right laser has boosted their business
In today’s competitive aesthetic industry, salons and clinics all over the UK are finding new ways to enhance their potential and provide clients with the service they can trust. owners of Estetica Dental, Dr Sina Salimi and Parisa Bahramian purchased the GentlemAX laser machine in February 2010. Since then, Parisa who normally works part time at Estetica Dental, has been fully booked for the three and half days (9am-8pm) she works each week with appointments for the GentlemAX exclusively. Treatments have become so popular that clients now need to book a month in advance. The GentlemAX provides 10% of the clinic’s overall income and they are set to pay off the cost of the machine within the year; fantastic results considering the laser is in use only three days per week. Parisa puts the GentlemAX success down to some important factors: “Firstly, it is so easy to use; the simple touch screen system means that the machine does most of the work for me, and I don’t have to fiddle around with different settings. Secondly, traditional IPL treatments or other lasers can take up to 20 minutes to work on an area such as the underarm, with GentlemAX, this same area can take five minutes. my clients like the fact laser treatments provide permanent results and are willing to save up for a course of treatments whatever the cost”. So how did a dental clinic evolve so easily into a hair removal and antiageing centre too? Dr Salimi puts this down to the loyalty of his clients and also the efficacy of the laser. “When clients come in for dental surgery, they are often open to the prospect of laser treatments for hair removal, skin
Skin Rejuvenation Addressing pigmentation, sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, the GentlemAX is the perfect solution to those who are reluctant to go under the knife. Parisa states “We offer Botox® treatments here, and the GentlemAX is usually in the same room as where I am giving the injections. It becomes a talking point and I have found that once I get talking about our skin rejuvenation, they often cease their Botox® treatments and replace them with a laser treatment instead. I point out that while Botox® freezes the face, the GentlemAX provides a gentle lift and lighten- which is often a key point to a youthful aesthetic. Furthermore, Botox® needs to be topped up at least three times a year, and the cost of this is the equivalent to a long lasting GentlemAX treatment.” When asked who normally uses the GentlemAX, Parisa claims that the age range varies depending on the treatment: women in their twenties and thirties come in for hair removal, while older women, and in some cases older men, come in for skin rejuvenation, “I have found that treatment for sun damage and also photo rejuvenation treatment are very popular amongst men. The thing I love about the GentlemAX is that clients are able to see results instantly rather than having to wait up to a week for their new image.”
Vascular Lesions As well as working on skin rejuvenation, photo rejuvenation and rosacea, Parisa also uses the GentlemAX for vascular lesions, “We get a lot of
32

rejuvenation, photo rejuvenation etc. They come and ask ‘What does that machine do?’, which gives us the opportunity to explain to them how it works, and because they trust us and know we are a credible source, they are more open to booking a course of treatments. This also works the other way round; clients come in for a GentlemAX treatment and are so impressed with the results, they are willing to book a dental appointment off the back of that.” Estetica Dental offers their clients a free patch test so that they understand the sensation and potential before committing to a course of treatments. This is a great tool to engender trust with your client and also break down any preconceptions they have about laser treatment. Dr Salimi has also found that you can never underestimate the potential of ‘word of mouth’: “We did not advertise the fact that we could offer laser treatments for the first six months of its installation. Yet we still found that we were fully booked with our clients’ friends and relatives coming to have various treatments. And what’s more, these new clients are often very influential people so it is great to be able to provide an outstanding service and further our reputation. The GentlemAX has definitely opened those doors for us.” The GentlemAX is candela’s highest performing laser and treats a range of conditions from skin ageing to vascular lesions and unwanted hair and the clinic has been using the system for all of these indications.
clients who want the appearance of their broken veins reduced. In some cases they have undergone a treatment where a needle has been used to drain their vein, and this has been very painful for them. They are often sceptical when it comes to new treatments, but after a patch test they can see that the appearance is visibly reduced, and they are happy to proceed with the GentlemAX”. It’s not just mother Nature or lifestyle choices which cause unwanted vascular conditions, Parisa has seen many people who have undergone liposuction on their thighs, hips and back, and now have broken veins: “Due to the nature of plastic surgery, veins often become broken and create an unsightly aesthetic. It’s just one of the risks of going under the knife. With the GentlemAX, I am able to refine the image of broken veins and also smooth out cellulite on the affected areas”.
Hair Removal Hair removal is big business in the beauty and aesthetics industries today and laser can provide time saving and longer lasting solutions to unwanted hair. Parisa finds the GentlemAX to be popular with both men and women. “When we started using the GentlemAX for hair removal, we were not able to advertise, but this didn’t stop business booming! It is so fashionable now to have an all-over smooth body and a lot of women are willing to save up for this. one of my clients is a cleaner and her treatments are such a priority to her; although they are a big commitment both financially and time-wise, she never misses an
appointment. Some hair removal treatments require ‘top up’ treatments, which are less than ideal for people with thick hair or hormonal imbalances; the GentlemAX is by far the most effective hair removal treatment for these conditions.”
Taking business to the MAx! Estectica Dental is delighted with the new addition to their clinicwith new clientele coming through the door each day and a fully booked schedule, they cannot speak highly enough of the GentlemAX laser which has really made a difference for their clinic. Dr Salimi says “We had one client who came in for a sun damage treatment, then had their broken veins addressed, then had hair removal and are now being treated for wrinkle reduction. It really is a ‘do-it-all’ machine”. Parisa adds “Even though I work part time here, I am now looking to increase my time and make myself available for treatments using the GentlemAX. It is a fantastic way of creating new customer relations and enhancing existing ones”.

SuppORT Why selling compression garments could add a new profit margin to your clinic
Adding a new profit centre to your clinic could be much easier than you think with compression hosiery popularity on the rise. With many uses both pre and post operatively, compression hosiery is not to be ignored. Suitable compression is essential to the health and well being of many individuals who may come to your clinic requiring relief from their circulatory or venous problems. Although the stigma attached to support stockings has caused people to believe that compression hosiery is unattractive, this is no longer the case and is beginning to be recognised as such. Manufacturers have taken great care in ensuring hosiery is attractive and stylish, as well as offering great compression benefits in order to satisfy patients and encourage the use of health boosting medical hosiery, creating a brilliant business opportunity for private clinics. Available in a variety of styles and colours it is often now difficult to tell when a person is wearing compression stockings, boosting their popularity with wearers.

Whilst good practice tells us that compression hosiery should always be used following venous procedures in order to reduce pain whilst increasing the chance of a full recovery and decreasing the possibility of a problem reoccurring, it also tells us that recommendation of preventative products can help reduce the risk of a patient developing a venous disease to begin with. Sam Dhatt on the newest plant cell breakthroughs in skincare Science seems like a very artificial and synthetic thing, where compounds are manipulated in sterile spaces by people wearing white coats and latex gloves. But incredibly, the latest breakthrough in beautiful skin comes from the earth and sea itself, and from some of the garden’s most deliriously sensual flowers. Botanicals have been used in cosmetics for centuries, but today, utilising plant stem cell technology, we are able to extract cells from plants and cultivate them in the laboratory, multiplying their potency by literally 1,000 times or more than that which is present in the naturally occurring molecule. This bionic concentration, impossible in nature, allows the resulting product to deliver a power-dose of active ingredients to today’s demanding consumer, thus bringing together the best of both worlds – botanical and lab- derived – and because the human skin is the largest repository of adult stem cells in the body, plant stem cells are understandably the most significant breakthrough in topical skincare for decades.

HoW To BRING THIS SCIENCE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS During the past few years, primarily in the context of heavily publici sed political campaigns, ‘stem cell research’ has made headlines. It is essential to address this potential misunderstanding when discussing the benefits of plant stem cell technology. There is absolutely no relationship between the stem cell research involving human embryos, and plant stem cell technology. This distinction is essential for all clients to understand, to avoid any ethical, political, philosophical, or religious objections to this promising and earth- friendly technology.

Elain Stoddart on the medical aesthetic applications of advanced electrolysis of AcP, from skin tag removal to treating telangiectasia, milia, warts and other more diverse skin abnormalities
Electrolysis, which was first invented in 1875 for in-growing eyelashes, is traditionally known as a method of hair removal, a method that, whilst slow, still retains its crown as the only ‘permanent’ method of hair removal suitable for all skin and hair types. Electrolysis utilises either a direct current (Galvanic method) or a high frequency alternating current, (Short Wave Diathermy or Thermolysis) or a mixture of A/c and D/c (called the Blend method).
ElainE Stoddart Elaine Stoddart is director of training and PR for Sterex Electrolysis International Ltd. She is the most prolific trainer in advanced electrolysis/ cosmetic procedures (ACP) in the UK and has trained surgeons, doctors, nurses and many other medical practitioners and therapists in this subject matter. With a Cert Ed. Teaching Degree and assessing awards, she also gained many years of experience lecturing in FE colleges. She is co-author of two S/ NVQ Level 3 Beauty Therapy books pub. Heinemann (2004) and Pearsons (2010) and is a highly respected international speaker in electrolysis and advanced electrolysis. She is a member of BABATC, on their ‘ask the expert’ panel, she sits on the City and Guilds National Advisory Committee and is an Associate of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Step-by-Step | ChromaPeel
Diamonds aRE a GIRL’S BEST friend
our step-by-step guide to the chromaPeel treatment
Microdermabrasion has been a part of the aesthetics portfolio since the early days but the advent of laser rejuvenation and low downtime chemical peels meant that its popularity has dwindled in the last decade. However both here and across the pond in the US, microdermabrasion seems to be making a come back. One company that has been leading the way in the field of microdermabrasion is Carlton and its ChromaPeel treatment, which combines diamond microdermabrasion, colour therapy and brushing, is its flagship device. Because the system does not use crystals, no vacuum is required to remove them, making the treatment fast and virtually silent. The four variable speeds and choice of two diamond encrusted heads also allows the treatment to be tailored for any skin type and the addition of a brushing option (which loosens the dead skin cells, increases blood flow to the skin and helps to
eliminate toxins and waste) adds another string to its bow. Another unique feature of the system is its colour therapy mode, which can be used either in combination or as a stand alone treatment. Colour therapy stimulates the skin’s cells to facilitate change using LED lights in four colours (red, green, blue and yellow), which are set at varying wavelengths offers a wide range of benefits. Four pulsed modes are also included, which allow penetration of the wavelengths into the skin at different levels providing stimulation for the epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissue and deep into the circulatory system. The treatment lasts around 45 minutes to an hour, although the length of the treatment and the number required varies according to the client’s requirements. A course of 10-12 treatments is recommended to improve skin regeneration. Here is our step-by-step guide to how it is done…

BIOACTIVE BEAUTY LAUNCHES HYDRoPEPTIDE® comPLETE LASH AND EYE RESToRATIoN kIT. Bioactive Beauty has launched Hydropeptide® Complete Lash and Eye restoration kit. The kit includes LASH by Hydropeptide® and EYE by Hydropeptide®. Hydropeptide® LASH uses plant stem cell and growth factor technology that nourishes and revives while sleeping. The product is applied like eyeliner on eyelashes and brows every night and speeds up the microcirculation of protein-rich amino acids delivered to hair follicles. In a six week clinical study evaluating the effects of HydroPeptide® LASH on 36 women, ages 21 to 65 – eight out of 10 users of HydroPeptide® LASH felt their lashes looked fuller in just four weeks. 92% of the women said their eyebrows appeared thicker and lusher and 96% said their brows appeared fuller. 94% of participants said their eyelashes appeared to increase in length and 96% said their lashes appeared more thick, lush and full. EYE by HydroPeptide® infuses the eye area with a high concentration of potent Peptides and Neuropeptides, while Hesperidin and chrysin work to help reduce dark bruise-like discolorations and puffiness around the eyes. In the same clinical study 94% of women said their eyes looked brighter and the skin around their eyes felt firmer after just ten minutes. 100% said that the skin around their eyes felt more moisturised ten minutes after application. After four weeks, 89% saw a reduction in dark circles, 97% noticed a reduction in wrinkles and 89% noticed a reduction in puffiness.

People can come to us knowing that whatever products we are offering are quality products that are tried and tested – we are not stocking everything and anything that happens to come onto the market
obagi remains the number one choice for physicians in the US...it is a truly medical system, it is only available through physicians and that sets it apart from all the other brands out there program helps clients achieve optimum skin health by ‘layering’ these potent ingredients to increase and enhance repair. The range includes products to cleanse, activate, stimulate, calm and nourish and protect the skin as well as specially formulated eye, hand and body products.
TRAINING Healthxchange prides itself on offering the best quality service and that includes providing comprehensive training for obagi. As well as introductory workshops, the company runs intermediate training and masterclasses on how to use the systems and incorporate them into the aesthetics practice. karen says, “The key success factor in using obagi is educating not just the physicians but other members of their team about the product range so to do that we have introduced three levels of training. We have also created bespoke training for different members of the team so everyone goes through the introductory and intermediate training and then there is an optional advanced workshop that people can attend. I think people get better results from obagi if they have everybody in their team on board.” The introductory workshop is a half day seminar which helps delegates to gain a basic understanding of facial aesthetics and the importance of healthy skin; understand how good skin therapy can integrate into their aesthetic practice; understand how the obagi System works and why it is distinct from any other skincare regimen available; learn how to choose the right Transformation System for their patients; review their knowledge of skin anatomy, histology and physiology; gain advice on distinguishing skin types and skin problems and gain understanding as to the use and prescription of products within the obagi System. certificates for the training are issued in two categories: Physicians and Independent Prescribers - certificate of Attendance for Products and Procedures and Non-Physicians - certificate of Attendance on Product knowledge. The obagi masterclass Workshop is a full day seminar led by an experienced physician, Dr Fred coville. Delegates who complete the course will gain an in-depth understanding of facial aesthetics and how this applies to their practice; review the obagi System and its application in a variety of situations; understand how to further customise the obagi System of products to achieve outstanding results for their patients; learn advanced techniques and receive hands-on practice in the administration of and the techniques involved in the obagi Blue Peel and learn how to combine obagi Systems and Blue Peels with other aesthetic techniques and procedures. certificates will be issued to Physicians only. (See our Diary of Events on page 52 for course dates). But its not just about educating physicians, karen is also keen to make sure consumers are educated abut the obagi brand to and as such the company has launched a Uk specific website www.obagi. uk.com to do this, which she says is about “supporting the clinician in spreading the message to consumers about healthy skin.” It is clear from both its product selection and its dedication to training that Healthxchange is not just a one-stop shop but a supplier that is passionate about maintaining its integrity in a market that is becoming saturated in terms of both the products and treatments available and the people supplying them, and this is why its loyal customer base continues to grow.

The classic laser and light training day covers the MHRA 2008 syllabus, hence plenty of interesting layman’s physics and basic photobiology. October 2010 brings significant changes to both laser and the wider cosmetic sector, with deregulation providing the impetus to liberalise the cosmetic market and bring cosmetic treatments into the scope of VAT. The Core of Knowledge is an ideal introduction for those new to laser/ILS technologies and a useful CPD refresher for more experienced practitioners.

Vistabel® (botulinum toxin type A) Abbreviated Prescribing Information Presentation: Botulinum toxin type A (from clostridium botulinum), 50 Allergan Units/vial. Temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe vertical lines between the eyebrows seen at frown, in adults <65 years, when the severity of these lines has an important psychological impact for the patient. Dosage and Administration: See Summary of Product Characteristics for full information. Do not inject into blood vessels. Doses of botulinum toxin are not interchangeable between products. Not recommended for patients <18 or >65 years. Use for one patient treatment only during a single session. Reconstitute vial with 1.25ml of 0.9% preservative free sodium chloride for injection (4U/0.1ml). The recommended injection volume per muscle site is 0.1ml (4U). Five injection sites: 2 in each corrugator muscle and 1 in the procerus muscle: Total dose 20U. Contra-indications: Known hypersensitivity to any constituent. Myasthenia gravis, Eaton Lambert syndrome. Infection at proposed injection sites. Pregnancy or lactation. Warnings/Precautions: Use for one patient treatment only during a single session. Relevant anatomy and changes due to prior surgical procedures must be understood prior to administration. Product contains less than 1mmol sodium (23mg) per dose. Do not exceed recommended dosages and frequency of administration. Epinephrine (adrenaline) or any other anti-anaphylactic measures should be available. Very rare reports of adverse reactions possibly related to spread of toxin distant from site of injection. Therapeutic doses may cause exaggerated muscle weakness. Caution in patients with history of dysphagia and aspiration. Patients or caregivers should seek immediate medical care if swallowing, speech or respiratory disorders arise. Too frequent or excessive dosing can result in risk of antibody formation, which may lead to treatment failure. Caution in the presence of inflammation at the proposed injection site(s) or when excessive muscle weakness or atrophy is present. Caution when used in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or with peripheral neuromuscular disorders. Effects of administering different botulinum toxin stereotypes simultaneously, or within several months of each other, is unknown and may cause exacerbation of
excessive neuromuscular weakness. Interactions: Theoretically, the effect may be potentiated by aminoglycoside antibiotics or other drugs that interfere with neuromuscular transmission. Adverse Effects: See Summary of Product Characteristics for full information on side effects. Based on controlled clinical trial data, the proportion of patients that would be expected to experience an adverse reaction after treatment is 23.5% (placebo: 19.2%). These adverse reactions may be related to treatment, injection technique or both. In general, reactions occur within the first few days following injection and are transient and of mild to moderate severity.
