The Expo is the first free of charge trade show for the aesthetics industry and is being supported by some of the key players in the industry, including Galderma who are our Platinum Sponsor. Also in this issue, we take a look at the role of make-up in the aesthetics practice from the use of mineral products post-procedure to camouflage and retailing, we speak to clinics that have boosted their business by incorporating make-up and show you some of the best products around (p34-40). As well as this we chat to pioneering South African plastic surgeon, and one of the founding fathers of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), Dr Des Fernandes (p32-33) and look at the controversial topic of laser regulation in light of recently announced changes (p20). I hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to seeing you at the Cosmetic News Expo 2010 at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London on April 16 and 17.

THE KuSH I have always been conscious of how my face would age but, until I hit my 30s, I never thought about the physical signs of ageing on my body – that was until I started to see ‘creases’ appear on my décolleté. I was delighted therefore when a PR contacted me and asked if I would be interested in trying out a new breast support device that not only aids sleep comfort for newly enhanced women but can apparently help to prevent ‘cleavage wrinkles’ and sagging in naturally larger chested women like me. What I was expecting to receive in the post was some kind of pillow, what I got was a small plastic tube. At first glace I couldn’t see one how you were supposed to wear it and how on earth it would help, however in true journalistic style I promised to give it a go. While it may not look like it

The device is placed between the breasts when side-sleeping to prevent them sagging. It was developed in the US by a woman who wanted to combat her own cleavage wrinkles, caused by gravity and pressure over years of side sleeping. It has been used widely in the US since its launch last year, and has been endorsed by top plastic surgeon Peter Tucker, who hailed the product as ‘outstanding’ and recommends it to all his breast augmentation or reconstruction patients. The product retails at £29.99 and comes in a variety of sizes and colours. Whether it is actually going to prevent me getting cleavage wrinkles, only time will tell, however it is an innovative and interesting little device which I will certainly talk about to my friends and is the kind of quirky gimmick that I am sure all women concerned about lines and wrinkles on their chest would line up to try.

NEWS IN BRIEF

IHAS REVEALS QUALITY ASSURANcE LOGO

MYCEllS gETS FDA NOD

The Independent Healthcare Advisory Services (IHAS) has revealed its Quality Assurance Logo in advance of the launch of its Shared Regulation scheme. The Government-backed scheme will see the provision of injectable cosmetic treatments, including dermal fillers and botulinum toxin, being controlled for the first time. The IHAS will be running the industryled registration, certification and inspection scheme, which has been developed by the injectable cosmetics industry with the encouragement of Ministers to safeguard patients from treatments carried about by unqualified rogue practitioners. “This is excellent news for consumers and properly qualified practitioners”, says Dr Andrew VallanceOwen, chair of IHAS Shared Regulation Group. “With growth of an estimated 25 per cent of treatments carried out last year alone, the industry and the Department of Health recognised the need to safeguard patients by creating a system of registration and certification to reduce the risk of poor-practice within the sector.” Sally Taber, director at the IHAS adds, “The IHAS Quality Assurance Scheme will protect patients by providing them with a list of registered providers that comply with good practice standards for injectable cosmetic treatments.” The Department of Health has given a one-off contribution of £200,000 to support the development of the IHAS Quality Assurance Mark. Health Minister Mike O’Brien said, “Quality marking the organisations that provide injectable cosmetic treatments will help protect the public from unscrupulous operators. It will clearly mark those who uphold the highest standards the industry can provide. This is why I have given my support and government funding to help set up the scheme.” The scheme will include the registration of organisations where practitioners are providing treatment, as well as registering sole practitioners working in facilities where injectable cosmetic treatments are provided. Registered adult nurses, doctors and dentists will be able to register over the next few months. A dedicated website will list organisations and practitioners that have been accepted for registration and certification, signposting patients to providers who are offering high standard care. Organisations and practitioners will be able to apply for registration, with self-assessment documents and supporting evidence submissions required. Applications for certification and registration will be reviewed by a team of experts, who will also run inspections by conducting site visits randomly selected, with only 24 hours’ prior notice to providers. All providers will be charged a registration scheme fee, with all funds generated being reinvested into the running of the scheme. Practitioners and organisations will be required to seek re-certification every year to ensure standards are maintained. Following the official launch of the scheme to the industry this month, a heavyweight public awareness campaign will follow to call on consumers to seek out the IHAS Quality Assurance Mark when undergoing injectable cosmetic treatments. It will also give guidance to consumers on the sort of information, care and standards they should expect when undergoing treatments.

The Consulting Room™, the uK’s largest aesthetic information website aimed at both consumers and industry professionals, has launched a new Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Aesthetic Treatments Blog providing its members with the opportunity to interact with both the media and potential customers/patients.

Skin rejuvenation system MyCells has received marketing approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The product already has sales, primarily in Japan and Europe, of several hundred thousand dollars, and the company plans to launch sales soon in the US. The FDA noted that the product is substantially similar to already existing and approved products, so it allowed the product. The MyCells autologous platelet preparation kit uses a patient’s own blood, which is separated into its various components. The platelet rich plasma is then injected back under the patient’s skin. The FDA approval applies to the kit itself. The medical procedure does not need FDA approval, but needs acceptance by the medical community.

FUll lIpS kEY TO lOOkINg YOUNg SAYS STUDY The findings of a recent study have suggested that fuller lips are the key to looking young. The international study was carried out at seven universities and funded by Unilever. It examined the facial appearance of 102 pairs of female Danish twins aged 59 to 81 as well as 162 British females aged 45 to 75. The results were published in the journal plOS One. The study also revealed that perceived age, pigmented age spots, skin wrinkles and the appearance of sun-damage were influenced more or less equally by genetic and environmental factors whereas hair graying, recession of hair from the forehead and lip height were influenced mainly by genetic factors.

NEWS IN BRIEF

FIRST REGENERATIVE cELL BREAST AUGMENTATION PERFORMED VIA STEM cELL ASSURANcE

BACD SpRINg CONFERENCE

Arthur Handal, MD, FACS has performed the first regenerative cell breast augmentation through Stem Cell Assurance Inc’s nationwide physician network. The procedure was performed at Handal Plastic Surgery in Boca Raton, Florida. The patient’s goal was to achieve an approximate increase of one cup size in each breast. Fat was taken from her hips and thighs by tumescent liposuction and processed to extract naturally-occurring regenerative cells. Commenting after the surgery, Dr Handal said, “Today is a defining moment in breast augmentation surgery. The offering of this pioneering procedure through a collaborative national physician network is an important milestone that marks major improvement on current technology and the way in which it is delivered to the patient.” By using the Stem Cell Assurance method of breast augmentation, the patient’s own fat and regenerative cells are used to create a graft for reinsertion to the breast. The Stem Cell Assurance technology offers improved outcomes in breast surgery. The fat volume retention rate is estimated to be 80 per cent or more compared to the 30-50 per cent survival rate of fat retention in previous fat grafting procedures. This new procedure appears to offer a significant advantage with long-lasting results. Stem Cell Assurance believes that its method will provide surgeons with the ability to treat patients who may be apprehensive about implants but still want fuller-looking breasts. Breast cancer patients will also now have another option for reconstruction after mastectomy.

SELF-PROFESSED ‘PIONEERS’ cRITIcISED The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has ‘denounced’ unverifiable statements made for the sake of self-promotion after being approached about claims that a particular surgeon was responsible for “pioneering and introducing most of the cosmetic surgery procedures that are available today”. BAAPS President Nigel Mercer termed many current marketing tactics ‘immoral’ and reiterated the need for tighter regulation in a ‘Scrubbing Up’ article on the BBC’s website. BAAPS warns that, according to the GMC, any information that appears in print about the services a doctor provides must be verifiable and truthful. Mr Mercer said, “Rest assured, if someone develops a new technique, they will publish it, so how can this surgeon really claim to have pioneered these techniques? No matter how technically good, doctors should not make unverifiable claims for the sake self-promotion.”

Eternal Cream is formulated to compensate the loss of the vital substrate and restore the skin’s volume at the deepest levels. The cream combines well with Eternal Intensive Serum to improve results, particularly in very lax, flaccid skins. LUMENIS® LAUNcH M22 Lumenis has launched a new multi-application platform, the M22, featuring its proprietary Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™) and Multiple-Sequential Pulsing. The M22 has the broadest range of energy for its size and application. The streamlined tabletop modular platform comes out of the box ready for treatment. Easy to install and use, thanks to multi-lingual capability, a user-friendly touch screen interface and hundreds of pre-sets, the M22 is simple, savvy and accessible. “The M22 delivers everything you’d expect from a multiapplication platform, but takes its performance to the next level with accuracy, simplicity and expediency,” says Dr Matthew Knight, FAAD, Knight Dermatology Institute in Orlando, FL. “And it’s set up for expansion, allowing for the treatment of multiple skin conditions with one device.” OPT, unique to Lumenis IPL, delivers the right pulse and fluence for each application. Physicians can safely and efficiently treat a variety of skin types by controlling each pulse shape. Multiple-Sequential Pulsing enables permanent hair reduction on darker skin as well as reducing the chance of skin damage in vascular and pigmented lesion treatment. The M22 offers the Nd:YAG upgrade module, proven for vascular lesions, leg veins, and non-ablative facial wrinkle treatment. The treatment head is equipped with two spot sizes (2 x 4mm and 6mm) for precision treatment, complete with computer-enabled recognition and Sapphire Cool Light Guides for optimal patient comfort.

MAPPERLEY PARK HANDS ON MASTERcLASSES Learning from laser experts is a sure way to put you ahead of the competition. The courses will be run by Jo Martin, clinical director at Mapperley Park and, with 17 years of laser experience, a recognised expert. Each day will comprise an authoritative mix of theory and practice based around a range of commonly used laser and IPL equipment, concentrating on the actual applications themselves. BAAPS STATS SHOW RISE IN MALE SURGERY The economy may have been sagging but the nation still found ways to remain uplifted during 2009, according to the latest audit figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. The number of surgical procedures last year exceeded 36,400 – a slow but steady rise of 6.7 per cent from 2008, despite the financial downturn. The most impressive stats have been recorded specifically in male surgery, the demand for which has grown by 21 per cent overall, with the number of gynaecomastia (or ‘man-boob’) ops alone having shot up by 80 per cent.

NEWS IN BRIEF MUMS THE wORD post-baby surgery accounted for 60 per cent of surgical procedures in 2009, according to the Harley Medical group. Breast augmentations remained ‘top of the ops’ and were the third most common type of post-natal procedure with mums. post-baby surgery also now also accounts for 90 per cent of tummy tucks and 75 per cent of mastopexy procedures. Men now also account for 18 per cent of all patients seen, with ‘Boytox’ (male Botox) and ‘Sweatox’ (antisweat Botox), both proving popular.

HYDRAFACIAl wORkSHOpS SkinBrands is hosting two Hydrafacial workshops this month. The workshops will take place at the Medizen Clinic in Sutton Coldfield on Saturday March 27 from 10am-2pm and at the SkinBrands Training Suite in Ealing, london on Tuesday March 23 from 2pm-6pm. The workshops are free and are on a first come first served basis. E-mail tracey@ skinbrands.co.uk to reserve your space.

A total of 36,482 surgical procedures were carried out by BAAPS members in 2009. Women had 32,859 procedures, up from 31,183 in 2008 but interest in male surgery far outstripped them with a rise to 3,623 from 3,004 last year. The number of male breast reduction ops nearly doubled from 323 to 581, moving from the fifth most popular procedure for men to third. Breast reduction surgery proved popular among women as well, rising by 17 per cent from 3,522 to 4,122. Male brow lifts rose by 51 per cent, from 72 to 109, as well as male face-lifts which went up by nearly a quarter and male tummy tucks (up 20 per cent). Rhinoplasty proved very popular with both sexes, increasing by 25 per cent overall, thus rising from seventh most popular procedure to fifth. Although face-lifts actually fell in demand by eight per cent among women, the steadfast rise in brow lifts, eyelid surgery and nose jobs suggests patients may have sought cheaper and more targeted rejuvenation procedures. Breast augmentation remains the most popular procedure for women, with 8,565 performed this year. According to Mr. Rajiv Grover, consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS secretary responsible for the UK national audit of cosmetic surgery, “This year we have recorded a dramatic rise in a number of male surgical procedures, probably due to heightened media attention, which has allowed men to realise the positive outcomes that can be achieved. The continued popularity of brow lifts and eyelid surgery may mean that patients still keen to have rejuvenating treatments despite the recession, are choosing more cost-effective measures such as targeting one particular feature, rather than having a whole face-lift.”

FLYING IN FOR AQUAMID® Dr Michael Zacharia will be flying in from Sydney, Australia to hold two key workshops on Aquamid® in Central London. The aim of the workshops, which will take place on March 27, is to provide already experienced injectors with the confidence and competence to use Aquamid® and learn how to fit the product alongside existing treatments, providing patients with more options. The former President of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS) and a specialist ear, nose, throat (ENT) and facial plastic surgeon, Dr Zacharia is renowned for his experience in facial rejuvenation. He uses a combination of medical and surgical techniques to achieve the best results for his patients and has found Aquamid® greatly complements his treatments. Aquamid® is a unique soft filler that integrates completely into the subcutaneous tissue in natural harmony with your client’s body. It does not degrade over time and can be used for treating nasolabial folds, nose correction, rising of scars, mento-labial folds, cheek contouring, chin augmentation, glabella and jaw-line contouring. It is injected using the linear retrograde technique and should be performed in aseptic conditions. Aquamid® is one of only 12 injectable dermal fillers that has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia, one of the most controlled markets for medical products. Dr Zacharia will be demonstrating how Aquamid® can be used for cheek augmentation, nasal correction and post rhinoplasty indications as well as the raising of scar depressions. He will also be discussing why Aquamid® is the preferred long-term filler based on the safety data and his own longterm experience. To ensure your place on the workshop please contact Medical Aesthetic Group on 02380 676 733 or e-mail info@magroup.co.uk and confirm either the morning or afternoon session with a £20 deposit (fully refundable on attendance, or donated to charity Smile if unattended), as soon as possible.

pRISON FOR BOgUS INJECTOR A salon owner has been sentenced by a US court to 13 months in prison and one year of supervised release for injecting counterfeit Botox® and Restylane® into customers at her Bellevue beauty salon. Xin He, aka Faith He, 46, of Issaquah, washington was convicted at a bench trial in October 2009 and was ordered into immediate custody by US District Judge Marsha J pechman. Following sentencing Judge pechman observed that He, who was not a medical doctor licensed to use injectable treatments for wrinkle removal, persisted in ‘risky and dangerous behavior’, offering unlicensed treatments despite warnings from employers, regulators, agents and others.

STUDY SHOwS EFFICACY OF pURElOgICOl® A six week study carried out at the University of pretoria has proven the efficacy of Hydrolyzed Collagen supplementation (purelogicol®) on cutaneous ageing. The randomised clinical trial examined 100 women between the ages of 50 and 65 years of age. They recieved either the hydrolyzed collagen supplement or placebo tablets for six weeks. The results demonstrated that there was an average increase in skin moisture in the hydrolyzed collagen group compared to the placebo group. There was also a decrease in wrinkle width and pore size.

ON THE SCENE Out and about in the industry this month DR DES FERNANDES uK vISIT Leading South African plastic surgeon Dr Des Fernandes flew over to the UK at the end of January to give two special presentations on medical needling on behalf of the International Institute of Anti-Ageing (iiaa). Held at Savoy Place in London the two half-day events were aimed at skincare therapists and aesthetic nurses and doctors respectively. Dr Fernandes, who is one of the pioneers in this field and has written a number of clinical papers on the topic, presented to the aesthetic audience on his latest needling invention, the Focus Kit, introduced the Body Roller and gave a live needling demonstration, as well as giving a lecture on the physiology of photodamage. The afternoon was followed by an evening drinks reception in the foyer where attending practitioners had a chance to meet the man himself and ask additional questions. Cosmetic News had the opportunity to interview Dr Fernandes during his visit. Turn to pages 32-33 to find out what he had to say.

Regulation | Laser and IPL

OUT OF CONTROL

From October 1 2010 the regulation of Class 3B and Class 4 lasers and intense pulsed lights (IPLs) will be changing. The plans have outraged the medical aesthetics community and been shrouded in controversy. Here we examine the implications for the industry...

Last month the CQC announced on its website that “From October 2010, all currently registered adult social care and independent healthcare providers must be registered, with the exceptions of: some providers of non-surgical laser and intense pulsed light services ...”

as well as dental hygienists, dental and orthodontic therapists and dental technicians among others) using lasers and IPLs to treat ‘disorders’, however the beauty sector will fall outside of its remit and therefore beauty therapists and non-medically trained practitioners will be able to treat clients with a laser for cosmetic purposes without any supervision.

Effectively what this means is that in seven months time the CQC will continue to regulate all healthcare professionals (which it

We asked Dr Philip Dobson, medical director of LCS Ltd, to explain

defines as medical practitioners, nurses and dental practitioners

what this could mean for the industry…

By now you should all be aware that there are major changes on the way in October of this year. What you may not be aware of is that this has far reaching implications for all healthcare professionals in respect of clinical practice, which will place us at a severe disadvantage when compared to our non-medically qualified colleagues in the aesthetic and beauty industry. The Health & Social Care Act 2008 comes to effect on October 1 2010. This Act repeals in its entirety the Care Standards Act 2000. The new Act also brings into force The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2009 and the Care Quality Commission Registration Regulations 2009.

The effect of this new raft of regulation is as follows: 1. All currently registered providers of healthcare services must re-register with the CQC. Note: Application will not automatically guarantee the granting of a new registration! 2. Healthcare professionals who provide ‘regulated activities’ including the provision of any treatment of ‘disease, disorder or injury’ must register. The regulations specifically exclude toxins and fillers but includes any form of medical consultation where patients are consulted for the above and where medications are prescribed or treatments given. 3. Much is being made at present of the ‘de-regulation’ of non-surgical lasers and intense light sources, however, where these are used by a healthcare professional, in the treatment of ‘disease, disorder or injury’ they will continue to be regulated by the CQC after October!

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? The failure to include non-surgical lasers and lights in the new regulations at first glance seemed to mean that the whole non-surgical industry would be de-regulated from October (unless the Department of Health takes action to put in place an alternative regulator - still being discussed). Unfortunately the way in which the new regulations have been framed means that healthcare professionals who perform treatments for pigmentation, vascular lesions and, seemingly, any other condition apart from hair removal, will continue to be regulated, while the beauty sector will be able to perform identical treatments without any regulatory supervision – including Carbon Dioxide resurfacing! Before those of you who only do injectables chuckle to yourselves, you should be aware of another

important and potentially costly implication of the above. The removal of injectable treatments (toxins and fillers) from the regulatory scope means that these will not be considered ‘medical treatments’ per se and may again attract the attention of the VAT man for unregistered providers. It may then be a choice between proving that, as healthcare professionals, you do provide a ‘medical treatment’ and therefore have to register with the CQC or alternatively accept the above and have your treatments subject to VAT! Speak now or forever hold your peace!

The first ever Cosmetic News Expo will take place in London next month. Over the next few pages we tell you everything you need

to know about the UK’s first free of charge trade show and educational meeting for the aesthetics industry.

What’s it all about? In just over six weeks time, Creative Media will be opening the doors to the inaugural Cosmetic News Expo. Taking place at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London the Cosmetic News Expo 2010 gives you the opportunity to network, exchange information with your peers and find out about the latest technologies and products on the market. Bringing together more aesthetic practitioners under one roof than any other event in the UK, the Cosmetic News Expo is the only free of charge trade show and educational meeting specifically designed for the aesthetics market. The philosophy behind the event comes from Body Media’s extensive experience in running shows for other niche markets. We believe that education should be available to everyone, no matter what their budget, so we have designed an event that allows you to gather knowledge about the latest treatments and developments at the same time as attending hands on workshops and lectures, for free. Educational workshops will be held throughout the two-day event with industry leading practitioners, manufacturers and suppliers educating you on how to improve your business and get the most out of your clinic by offering the best treatments and products. Whether you are a cosmetic doctor, aesthetic nurse, dermatologist, plastic surgeon, cosmetic dentist, aesthetician or practice manager there is something for you at the Cosmetic News Expo 2010. The event is designed for industry professionals only and is not open to the public. Delegates/visitors will be asked to register in advance so they can be given appropriately colored badges to show what their profession is. Workshops and lectures featuring prescription only medicines will only be available to medical practitioners.

Drop-In Business Clinic Unique to the Cosmetic News Expo, our Drop-In Business Clinic is a fantastic opportunity for you to get expert advice on any aspect of running your business. Run by the team from The Consulting Room™ with help from experts from across the industry, the Drop-In Clinic will offer you invaluable one-on-one advice for free. Whether you want to find out about how to promote your business through marketing or PR, are confused about insurance or need legal advice, our experts will be on hand to answer your questions. For more information or to book an appointment contact our events team on 01268 754 897.

People in Profile | Dr Des Fernandes

FOUNDING FATHER We catch up with South African plastic surgeon and medical needling pioneer, Dr Des Fernandes during his recent uK visit

Self-professed pioneers have been criticised in the press this month, with the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons slamming those who claim to have introduced various procedures and techniques in order to promote themselves to the media. One man who can safely lay that claim, however, is Dr Des Fernandes. A true pioneer, Dr Fernandes has become one of the champions of the use of vitamin A in skincare and is a leader in the field of medical needling, having developed the principle of ‘rollering’ more than a decade ago. With a list of prestigious published papers on the subject under his belt, it is no surprise that the lecture theatre for his UK needling workshop is packed full of nurses, doctors and aestheticians keen to learn from the master. After sitting in on his lectures and demonstration my head is full of questions to ask the man who has dedicated the later part of his professional life to understanding and improving skin. We start by going back to the beginning to find out how he became so interested in skin… BACK TO THE BEGINNING

Special Feature | Make-Up

COvER uP From minerals to post procedure and skin camouflage, we look at the role of make-up in the aesthetic clinic

Make-up has long been considered the domain of the beauty world but in recent years it has been making its mark in medical aesthetics in the form of mineral, post procedure and camouflage make-up. CAMOuFLAGE The concept of cosmetic skin camouflage is nothing new. It was first pioneered during the Second World War to help American and British pilots who had been badly burned and was later researched and implemented in the 1950s by Joyce Allsworth, founder of the British Association of Skin Camouflage. Camouflage make-up today has two primary roles: as a post-procedure treatment to cover up erythma and post-operative bruising after injections, chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser treatments or cosmetic surgery and to disguise dermatological and congenital conditions such as vitiligo, birthmarks, pigmentation, rosacea, age spots, veins, scars and burns. Studies have shown that post operative make-up provides positive psychological effects for patients who have experienced social problems because of undesirable ecchymoses and edemas after aesthetic surgery. Traditional skin camouflage involves using specialist camouflage creams, which are matched to the surrounding skin tones. The creams are specially formulated and contain properties you would rarely find in a high street brand. They usually require setting with a waterproof powder or a fixer spray and last up to 18 hours. Treatment usually involves an hour-long consultation with a skin camouflage specialist where a patient is taught how to use the products. The main brands of camouflage creams include Covermark, Dermacolor, Keromask and Veil. Some creams are available through the NHS and can be prescribed by a doctor, but they can also be ordered at local pharmacies or purchased directly from the manufacturers or distributors. However, while it has an undeniable place in the market, particularly in the camouflage of medical skin conditions, some studies have shown that many post-procedure patients do not use it any longer than necessary and do not continue to purchase the products afterwards and this is where mineral make-up comes into its own.

MINERAL MAKE-uP Many patients nowadays want to walk out of a clinic looking like they have had nothing done and while many treatments offer minimal downtime there is usually some redness, swelling or even bruising after most procedures. Most medical aesthetic services require a delay in time before the application of typical make-up, however many female patients often disregard this rule, putting on their normal day-to-day make-up which can cause a variety of post

As well as containing oxygenating ingredients to let skin breath, the product features proprietary EPI-Repair Complex, which helps heal and reduce inflammation, so it is ideal for application after non-surgical procedures such as chemical peels, fractional laser skin resurfacing, cosmetic injections, tattoo removal, vascular treatments and microermabrasion as well as post cosmetic surgery. Its coverage abilities also mean it is able to camouflage acne, birthmarks and pigmentation. For busy clients who are constantly on the go, the product is also long lasting and water and sweat resistant, having been rated by the FDA as ‘Very Water Resistant’, which means it will even stay on while swimming or exercising. Another selling point is that the make-up has anti-ageing properties. MAKING THE GRADE

Sam Dhatt on the five grades of ageing and how to tailor both in clinic treatments and home care to improve the skin

We all know that when a client comes in wanting to be ‘perfect’ instantly, it is not possible, however, it is possible, through a well-planned treatment regime, to improve the client’s skin condition and appearance noticeably. Then, when they become happily aware of the improvements in their skin – even shocked at how great they look – your goal is to maintain that condition and possibly even improve it more. To do that, you have to recommend the right treatments and home care. That means no guess work. You must be able to look at your clients and know what to recommend and that the results will be great. Can you do that now with full confidence? Many aestheticians cannot and this dilemma can cause low confidence when choosing treatments and home care. Sam Dhatt is a highly respected, award-winning cosmeceutical chemist and the founder of DermaQuest™ Skin Therapy. During his 20-year career Dhatt has formulated and manufactured skincare products for more than 700 companies, including many of the best-known brands in the industry. He holds an MS in Chemistry from GND University, Amritsar, India, and an MBA in Marketing and Finance from Poona University, India. Dhatt serves as President and CEO of DermaQuest™ Skin Therapy, a privately held company with representation worldwide. The company was founded to allow him to develop proprietary, cutting-edge skincare formulations in products that achieve the highest performance possible for results-oriented professionals. He leads a team of highly trained chemists who share his philosophies and goals of developing and delivering the safest, most advanced product line possible to clinical professionals. Having combined their knowledge with the latest innovative technology, Dhatt and his team have developed an impressive array of high-performance products for use by skincare professionals and their clients. DermaQuest™ Skin Therapy continues to formulate new products as new ingredients and technologies are discovered.

GRADES OF AGEING Now there is a way to by-pass that dilemma: learn a short cut. The Grades of Ageing is a way to know which products and treatments are best for a client’s skin every time, and what treatment plan will effectively march a client toward chosen goals every time. With it, if you know your products and their ingredients well, you can quickly design a treatment program tailored specially for each client. Your plan brings clients toward their goals and then keeps them there, right where they are, happy and pleased with their skin, and you. Even better, it can take the client to a lower, more youthful grade, and does, with the right product line. Best of all you, as a professional can feel confident that your decisions are correct. The Grades of Ageing, detailed over the next two pages, are in classifications of 0 (youthful) to 5 (severely aged) in a logical and progressive order. They are not defined according to the chronological age of the client, instead according to the ageing condition of the skin. They are derived from the Glogau and Rubin classifications, with expansions, plus include the ingredients for each Grade needed for influencing the skin to improve are added.

Also on the left, below cleanser, moisturiser, etc. is a line labeled as ‘Professional TX.’ Here, you plug in your options for professional treatments for each Grade. After you plug in all of your products per appropriate grade, you will notice if there are any holes are in your product line; it becomes obvious, and you can deal with it. Most aestheticians find this method of defining an anti-ageing treatment program for a client is dependable and, for that reason, supports self-confidence in decisions. The treatment dilemma, “What product should I recommend?” or “What treatment should I perform?” is gone and the aesthetician designs effective treatment plans that march clients toward the results they desire. This aesthetician knows the right combination of home care and appropriate professional treatments and makes recommendations confidently. Times have changed in the skincare industry, definitely for the better, and as the industry continues to grow and ingredients become more sophisticated and results-oriented (and complicated), rest assured that using the Grades of Ageing to define your treatment plan makes the treatment planning process simple!

Every client, no matter his or her Grade of Ageing, must be educated toward commitment to sunscreen or anti-ageing will cease. A sunscreen should be recommended at the first appointment.

RESHAPING THE FAcE OF AESTHETIC MEDICINE This year’s 12th annual meeting of the International Master Course on Ageing Skin (IMCAS) in Paris played host to the premier of Novabel® – the latest addition to Merz Aesthetics’ expanding portfolio. Novabel® is a new type of dermal treatment – a dermal shaper – and represents a brand new class in aesthetic injectables.

46

Novabel® is designed not just to treat localised facial laxity, wrinkles or folds, but also to reshape facial features for results that are subtle and natural, yet visible and striking. Based on the latest and most innovative biomaterial, Novabel® is ultra gentle and offers unparalleled lifting and volumising properties.

injection. This makes Novabel® a perfect choice for a lunchtime appointment. Not only are results visible straightaway, they also have excellent longevity – up to 12 months1. This is due to the mode of degradation. Geleons™ are broken down by the relatively slow process of hydrolysis rather than by enzymatic degradation. Therefore Novabel® provides you with the opportunity to give your patients the precise natural-looking appearance they desire from the first day of treatment, and with no unwanted surprises over time.

A biomaterial established in clinical medicine

The unique properties of alginates and Geleon™ technology were first harnessed for use in numerous medical applications. For example, calcium alginate has been extensively employed in wound care and, more recently, Geleons™ have been used in pioneering stroke therapy. Geleons™ have also been used as carriers for enzymes and the controlled release of drugs. Novabel® is therefore based on tried and trusted medical technology and offers the reassurance of exceptional safety. Moreover, Novabel® has undergone extensive clinical testing – to ensure safety, tolerability and efficacy – in a multicentre phase III trial led by clinical investigators at the University of Berlin1. Novabel® is the ideal treatment for sensitive areas like tear troughs Three-dimensional Geleons™ are densely packed, highly flexible and do not reduce in capacity when exposed to pressure. They also have ‘shape memory’ which means they can pass through narrow tissue structures and are then able to recapture their original perfectly spherical shape. These attributes give Novabel® its impressive in situ filling and volumising capability as well the versatility to treat multiple facial indications. So while Novabel® is gentle enough to treat the most sensitive areas of the face, it’s also powerful enough to shape, contour and add definition to cheeks, the chin and the jaw-line, as well as deep nasolabial folds.

Supporting you in your practice Since Novabel® possesses unique properties compared to conventional dermal fillers, healthcare professionals may appreciate some guidance on how to optimally use this product. It is Merz’s policy that the product be solely used by well-trained experts. Therefore every healthcare professional is required to attend an introductory program and register with the Merz Aesthetics Academy. The academy workshops typically include important information about Novabel®’s unique way of shaping, contouring and defining, as well as clinical study results and guide injection practice. The workshop offers a comfortable environment where you can ask questions and become familiar with the product. Additional support is also provided through the Merz Aesthetics Academy, connecting you to a network of experts.

From strength to strength In addition to the much-anticipated launch of Novabel®, the future looks bright for Merz Aesthetics and its continually expanding portfolio. Looking back, February 2009 saw the launch of its new hyaluronic acid dermal filler – Belotero Intense®. The product is supported by powerful European clinical data highlighting its safety when compared to other leading dermal filler brands. This addition to an already established range demonstrates Merz’s continued commitment to clinical excellence. Belotero® differs from other dermal fillers in its manufacturing process. Cross linkages vary in density across the matrix of HA molecules, so that some molecules have many linkages and others have few. This patented manufacturing process known as CPM Technology (Cohesive Poly-Densified matrix) produces a highly cohesive but super-soft gel which results in a very natural transition between treated and untreated areas. The difference for the consumer is a real benefit. Unlike some other dermal filler brands where the product may be palpable for some months, Belotero® continues to provide the lift desired without being obvious to the touch. The consumer is unaware of the product in their skin, but can see the great natural lifting and revitalising results. Following the addition to the Belotero® range, 2010 also saw Merz acquire BioForm Medical, Inc, incorporating the flagship Radiesse® dermal filler to its portfolio. Radiesse® comprises unique, patented, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier. Unlike other fillers, Radiesse® continues to work over time. With its patented microsphere technology, it stimulates the body to produce

Over the last decade we have witnessed a revolution in the way that people interact with and search for information on the World Wide Web. The vast majority of clinics and practitioners offering cosmetic treatments, whether surgical or non-surgical, have grown to understand the importance of this marketing channel and have built their online presence with at least one core website. This fact, linked to the continued growth in clinics offering cosmetic treatments, has resulted in increasing competition for presence in the first pages of natural, organic search engine results alongside increasing costs for keywords for clinics using pay per click (PPC) advertising as part of their marketing activities. During the next decade clinics will have to become more sophisticated in using different cost effective web marketing strategies to ensure that they continue to be found and contacted by prospective customers. WEB MARKETING STRATEGIES Search engine optimisation, pay per click, article marketing, banner adverts, linking strategies, and social network marketing using blogs and sites such as Twitter, MySpace and Facebook are all actively promoted by web marketing gurus – and all will have a part to play during the next decade. All of these are aimed at generating telephone calls or e-mail enquiries from potential patients/clients for the services that you offer. The above strategies normally result in people clicking through to a ‘landing page’ – i.e. the first page that they reach from the link that they clicked on which contains written copy and images whose sole aim should be to effectively convince them that you can solve their problem and for them to take action by telephoning, or e-mailing you with their contact details so that you can get back to them.

Business Focus | Web Marketing

However, many links – even from focussed PPC advertising campaigns – do not lead to persuasive copy on the landing page, (more often than not the home page of your core site), that effectively differentiates you from competing clinics, and with a number of other links and distractions that you may have on this page – it’s easy for people to wander around your site, lose their way and then just leave. Remember, people arriving at your site are looking for answers. They scan to see if they’re in the right place and assess whether it’s going to be a quick and easy visit or a long grinding one. Your landing page is the welcome wagon inviting them in and feeding them the information they need. The structure of the page will either pull them in and encourage them to fulfil your goal, or distract and cause them to leave to a competitor’s site before getting the whole picture. In addition, if your landing page says the same thing, the same way as your competition, you’re in trouble. You must differentiate yourself somehow; you must standout to effectively compete.

SINGLE (LANDING) PAGE WEBSITES – A COST EFFECTIvE SOLuTION Single page advertising sites can be likened to just placing another advert in a Yellow Pages™ directory where you may test and evaluate a different advertising approach, alongside simply giving you more ‘advertising presence’ as it is effectively a separate website which increases the likelihood of someone seeing your overall advertising message and acting upon it – i.e. picking up the telephone! Additional benefits of employing single page advertising sites in your web marketing toolkit include: •

The use of appropriate keywords in the domain name (e.g., www.keyword1-keyword2.co.uk) can get this separate site listed in the first page of search engines alongside helping to improve PPC positions rather than just having your core clinic web address as the click through.

Single page landing sites usually have no additional navigational menus and hence encourage potential consumers who are searching for core specific services that you provide to read your tailored message – helping you to more easily test different advertising concepts than on your main site. In addition, an online Content Management System (CMS) linked to the site will give you full control of the advert – allowing you to instantly change the message, add special offers, photographs and upload other media (including video).

You can link a specific traditional offline advertising campaign to a single page site to provide a tailored message and call to action rather than just sending them to wander around your core website.

You can build in a separate trackable contact form so that you know who has contacted you via e-mail through this single page site.

You can also set up a separate 0800 number (that you can also record) to track the enquiries that you are getting via this site.

LIvE EXAMPLE OF A SINGLE PAGE WEBSITE MediZen Ltd launched the single page website www.VaserBirmingham.com to provide a separate focussed sales page for traffic directed initially via a PPC campaign when they launched their new VASER® Liposelection (ultrasound assisted liposuction) service last Autumn. As you can see from the recent screenshot – a Google™ search for ‘Vaser Birmingham’ lists the site in prime position for the PPC sponsored listings and in 1st position for the organic search engine listings results (ringed in red). It is also worth noting that they have gained a separate listing towards the bottom of the results page – (ringed in green) - as they have a video hosted on You Tube™ linked with the keywords ‘Vaser Birmingham’ in the title – resulting in additional advertising presence for the clinic through an effective video marketing strategy as well.

SuMMARY Single (landing) page websites are a versatile and effective tool that can help you to increase web presence and more easily test different advertising strategies to enhance the conversion from web page visits to calls or e-mail contacts to add to your marketing database. They are much easier to produce and maintain than a fully-fledged website – and set up and running costs are far less. Talk to your web designer, set up your own page via online web providers or contact The Consulting Room™ – www.consultingroomservices.com – for more information on how to incorporate this tool into your overall web marketing strategy.

ENERGIST BOOST

We find out why 2010 looks set to be a great year for Energist

The country may have been in the grips of a recession but for Energist 2009 was a landmark year in the history of its business. Not only did the Swansea-based company celebrate its 10th anniversary but the company also acquired the iPulse™ professional pulsed light business from CyDen Limited, launched its new high energy ‘Specialist’ 530nm handpiece for the ultraPlus vPL™ system and acquired the assets and business of MedArt A/S, a manufacturer of FRx CO2 and diode lasers for medical and aesthetic applications in Denmark and its subsidiary businesses in the uS and Germany. Since the company’s acquisition of MedArt in November 2009, it has increased its offering to the medical market. MedArt has more than 25 years of experience in the manufacturing of super compact, high performance diode and C02 lasers combined with scanning technology. Doctors and clinics world-wide use the high-performance equipment for high patient satisfaction. By combining specially designed accessories with the optimal wavelength the systems cover treatments from hair removal, leg veins, and telangiectasias to fractional skin treatments, the removal of varicose veins and ENT procedures. MedArt products include: •

MedArt® FRx Fractional CO2 laser – a small, compact C02 laser which comes with a scanner specifically designed for fractional skin treatments and offers the full treatment range from a light touch-up of the skin to a true skin resurfacing. Furthermore, the unique flexible fibre delivery system is an efficient tool for the busy clinic for the removal of

They can also be combined with a scanner specifically designed for hair removal. As the 810nm is absorbed well in blood, the diode laser is also well suited for larger surgical procedures such as treatment of haemangiomas and leg veins.
