EMMA UK ROUND ONE

EMMA UK launched into its new season, at the Auto Sound & Style show. With over 40 competitors to cram into a space for 30, it took a while to get all the vehicles into their respective judging positions. EMMA introduced some brand new judges at this event who had all attended a judging training workshop the weekend before and were raring to go! Despite the closeness of the season opener to Christmas, it is already clear that a good deal of work has gone into preparing cars for competition over winter. As is usual, UK Head Judge, Carlo Corbin of Ribble Valley Multimedia, organised and briefed the judges. An amount of leniency is always applied to the judging at the first event of the year and this was reflected in the scores, however, from here on, it gets tougher as we prepare competitors for the tough judging we experience at the Euro Finals. A fine job was made of event organisation and

the back office worked superbly well to ensure that judges and competitors knew what they were supposed to be doing and when. Full results can be seen at www.emma-uk.com as can a complete run down of events planned for the rest of the year. EMMA UK would like to thank its sponsors for their vital support. With huge support from our industry, the Auto Sound & Style show/M.E.N Expo certainly provided the perfect opportunity for dealers to talk with a vast array of suppliers and find out what was new. But anybody interested in mobile electronics found plenty to get excited about too, even if they weren’t there solely for business. From stunning product launches and the chance to get a close-up look at premium quality equipment they may have only read about before, to seeing the numerous innovative ways that the cars on show had built their audio installs, there was plenty to see and do. In fact, with manufacturer demo cars, dealer-supported customer cars and EMMA contestants’ cars all on show it was a veritable feast for the audio fan. And if all of that wasn’t enough for visitors to take in, the Auto Sound & Style promo girls surely must have finished a day off at the show perfectly. If you missed this years events, take a look at this small gallery and ask yourself why you weren’t there!

FOUR MASTERS PASSES NETWORK STRENGTH TEST The annual FOUR MASTERS get together took place at a hotel in Redditch on Thursday 18th March. This event is billed as FOUR MASTER day and is

generally themed to reflect the trading environment. This year’s theme was “Post Apocalyptic Britain” and opened up with an image of London in ruins. Having set the scene by recapping some of the issues that have hit business hard over the last 12 months, Co-Founder of FOUR Brian Parton delivered a passionate and heartfelt plea for all members to work together to help restore some pride in the industry and communicate with new consumers. Brian Parton’s natural enthusiasm, energy and a passion for an industry he has worked in for 20 years had the FOUR MASTERS whooping and cheering and many were stirred into standing up and recounting their own experiences of how FOUR MASTERS helps their business on a day to day basis. Many were extremely positive about the consistency of effort and messages sighting many other schemes born to represent the industry which have died through lack of effort in the past. Others expressed delight about subsidised sales training and told of how valuable this had been to junior or less experienced members of their sales staff. But, the day was not all about back slapping and some very important issues were touched upon. Taking a refreshingly different approach to marketing is the ethos within the FOUR MASTER network, and a 20 minute guide to the “four p’s” of marketing acted as a focus sharpener on the new challenges ahead. There was also a demonstration of what happens when beautifully crafted arguments for visiting a store are crushed if the store visited does not look the part! (try a Google search for “car hi-fi Redditch” to see this!). In contrast to the opening image of destruction, the closing image was of “Mad Max, The Road Warrior” and a call for everyone to become a post apocalyptic hero! Mutant Mutant’s latest demo car reinforces what the brand is all about; quality sound at affordable prices.

UprisinG

Cast your minds back a few years and you’ll probably recall the last Mutant demo car, a slick-looking Honda Civic Type R with the latest Mutant products all sweetly installed. The ethos behind opting for a Civic Type R was because it represented the same kind of qualities that the Mutant brand does. It was an affordable car but with great performance, so the Mutant install went hand-in-hand with those qualities. The problem with that though was when Armour Automotive were looking for the next demo car to promote the Mutant brand with they needed to find a car that, like the Honda Civic Type R, delivered plenty of bang per buck. It’s not as easy as you’d think either, finding a vehicle with at least some credibility that delivers performance with an accessible price tag.

Fortunately a solution cropped up that fitted the bill perfectly. While

the job perfectly. The Rose Gold product from Mutant has, since it’s launch

Even from the outside the new demo car exhibits some nice touches that are sure to get younger customers excited. The bronze coloured Rota alloy wheels not only add a trendy JDM feel to the exterior, but the tyre stretch is very “of the moment”. The great thing about this car too is that it can slot into numerous shows across the UK over the coming year, including some of the large Japanese-only events, which can in turn get the Mutant product out in front of new customers. Great news for Mutant dealers then! It’s the inside that really counts though, with the EVO seats that come as standard in the Ralliart Colts sure to get numerous interested show-goers sat on them to hear just how hard this car can kick. It’s worth noting too that Armour also had one of their VI Monitors fitted into the dashboard, a wise way of adding some extra value to the demo car for the company. While not everyone that gets up close and personal with the Colt may appreciate A1 Audio Design’s perfectly sculptured door builds or attention to detail with things like the “Mutant” stitching in the install, there is one crucial message that they’ll hopefully take away from it; that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get some incredible sounds from your car. Amazingly, the total bill for all the Mutant product in this car is around one thousand pounds. Considering the spec list and the noise it produces that is quite an incredible price. Even Paul at A1 is seriously impressed by this fact, and claims that for around four to five thousand pounds a customer

could have this complete install replicated. As he points out, this could be a simple way for a customer to build a show car or a magazine feature car… in other words, it would be a small price to pay for nationwide fame! That’s certainly what’s in store for this Mitsubishi Colt as it starts out on its mission to wow the crowds at shows through 2010. If you get a chance to see it at a show, take a sit inside and get the volume up for yourself, and maybe you’ll realise too why offering the Mutant brand to your customers could be a winning idea. The Installer’s View: Paul Richardson, A1 Audio Design “Nathan Pierce of Armour Automotive approached me to discuss the possibilities of building their new Mutant Demo Car and asked what I could do for their set budget. I arranged a meeting and visited them and after seeing their new product range and the vehicle, we quickly came up with a system design that suited both the car and budget. It wasn’t long before the car turned up at our workshop full to the roof with goodies. The firsts steps were to strip the whole car down and get busy heavily sound deadening every panel. The second step was to design an enclosure which would make full use of the Mutant subs. For this we decided to use a clam-shell style box with a central port, which was designed with Bass Box Pro using all the correct parameters supplied by Mutant. The enclosure was built from 1in board outside of the vehicle, which enabled us to build a very sturdy enclosure that was then internally braced and sealed. The next thing was to get it into the car, but to do this we fully removed the passenger’s door, seats, handbrake and roof lining and side airbag curtains. The box fitted with no room to spare and once it was in we bolted it to car’s chassis. At this stage we could start the facia panel, which was

constructed in place then removed in order for us to smooth and trim it. Moving onto the rear, with very little room left, a false amp board was made with room behind to hide cables. This was then securely fixed to the rear of the sub box. With the amplifers’ control being mounted on the face of the amps it made it very handy to secure and wire all amps ready to adjust at the end. The top amp cover panel was again constructed in place then removed to smooth and trim. The panel can easily be removed with no fixing screws to access amps’ gains and service the rear batteries and fuses. When it came to the doors we tried to keep the builds slim and stylish, following the theme from the bass enclosure. It quickly took shape, the door builds are made of three layers with the speakers mounted from the rear. Although there are six amps on display only five are running. There are three mono amplifers each running at 2 ohm powering two 12in subs. Each door build has its own four channel amp with a separate channel per passive crossover for each mid and tweeter. The end result is a stylish and tidy build which performs and looks like a high-end setup, but all within a tidy little budget. If you get a chance to hear this car i think you would be pleasantly surprised what Mutant have achieved in there new stylish product range.” More of A1 Audio Designs work can be seen at www.a1audiodesigns.co.uk, and they are happy to undertake work for the trade as well as the public.

2010

All the news from the must-visit mobile electronics trade show Once again the doors of Stoneleigh Park opened up to the mobile electronics industry, but this year there was something a little different. Consumers were allowed in for the first time on one of the days under the Auto Sound & Style banner, which certainly added a great extra dimension to the event. From a trade perspective there was an excellent turn out of dealers over both of the days and from what exhibitors told us there was plenty of business done. So a big “thank you” to all who attended and continue to make M.E.N Expo a must-visit event… and one that clearly continues to provide positive outcomes for all those who make the effort to attend. If you missed the show, hopefully this report will keep you up to speed with the product launches at show and the opportunities that these companies offer as we head deeper into 2010.

/ CAR AUDIO / SHOW REPORT SPECIAL

ARMOUR Armour’s hot new Ralliart Colt demo car for Mutant was reinforcing the message of desirable performance for a good price, something their Rose Gold product is becoming famous for. With 14 brands within Armour, there was plenty more though. Their Armour Audio programme for Focal, Orion, Kicker and Mutant is proving popular and the new audio demo boards that dealers can receive on loan as part of that are a great added extra. Focal now have their 170V speakers, designed specifically for Japanese cars for optimum sound quality, which should prove popular, plus a novel new High Cap, a plug-in to amp power cap of sorts. Updates are also being added to their IO range to make the most of dealer suggestions, while the VI Monitor continues to make strides, including new firmware updates and test results showing extreme accuracy on speed testing etc. On the security side the exciting news is the Viper 570i alarm that can be had with Smart Start, a trick new system that allows for control and alerts about armed vehicles to iPhones or Blackberries. And for Autoleads fans…well, watch this space.

ALPINE Alpine’s fantastic £399 deal for a boxed sub, amp, iPod-ready headunit and 7in speaker was a star of their stand. There were other highlights though including the IVA-D511RB motorised headunit, sailing against the tide of cheap motorised units by offering high-end quality…an area now overlooked by many manufacturers. Along with a new line-up of marine audio, they also showcased the second generation of PDX-F4 amp, now 20 percent smaller but with ultra wide frequency as well as new, extremely easy cable inputs. These sleek amps are also stackable for those that want more! Last month’s M.E.N cover star Scirocco also received plenty of admiration in the centre of Alpine’s great-looking stand.

AUDIOVOX Audiovox Incaar Systems’ three designs of rear seat entertainment were on show for dealers to get a real feel for. Each system offers something different for end customers, but all come with high OEM quality as standard! Magnat and Mac Audio products were also on display, with the chaps from the German HQ coming over to talk over the possibilities of UK distribution rights of their products with interested parties. Hopefully we’ll soon see these brands back in the UK.

AUDIOWAVE The British-made amps now have the new Aspire to offer customers. The amps can offer 200w per channel output and can even be parallel bridged. They look great in their powder-coated finish too, or the special edition with Union Jack backdrop and handfitted LEDs. A great addition to any serious install.

BASS FACTORY For the first time in 14 years Bass Factory have launched their own branded boxes into the market. The Street Thunder range caters for any 10in, 12in or 15in subs and combine the best of the two major types of ported boxes, offering deep roll-off but also a real punch at the high end. As Bass Factory say, they basically offer “seriously loud bass” and dealers are already finding many fans amongst consumers. Alternatively Bass Factory also offers sealed boxes in the same style and quality of finish.

AUTOMONITOR Specific monitors for the likes of the Toyota Rav4 and Vauxhall Insignia were on show, the likes of which should soon have tyre pressure monitors with displays fed to the screens available. The Baton HRW7N5C2 DVD headrest screen was also interesting, allowing for a slide-up hard cover to shield the screen when not used, or there are the new AM-HR750 headrest screens that have an 8.5in screen but also have a USB, SD card reader and built in speakers all for a retail price of around 50 percent of it’s most obvious competitor unit. Additionally Automonitor showcased their new range of parking sensors plus the range of roof-mounted screens from 7in to 19in diameters.

BRAVOX “The Voice of Brazil” must be seriously loud if their EDX-12 sub is anything to go by. The 3000W RMS 12in sub has been measured at 161.3db which Bravox claim makes it the most powerful 12in sub about. They also have OEM size speakers available meaning everyone can have high quality audio, something Bravox are keen to promote. Throughout the show the company were talking to dealers about supplying the brand, which they’re sure to continue doing. So get in touch if you want to speak with the company (that has been around since 1948) about offering your customers Bravox in the future.

heard the single or double boxed sub and amp packages in their demo car. For relatively little money and running standard front speakers, the demo car showed the punch of loud bass that Onyx can provide and it clearly did the job on consumers. They also had a high-to-low pass line out converter which allows users to keep their car’s original equipment but add some bass, which may be a useful solution for dealers.

CEL TRADE CEL Trade were proudly showing off their recent agreement to distribute Sony car audio products and had the latest on show. Garmin were also on hand to update dealers about the range of navigation products while CEL trade continued to promote the Hello Biker intercom system for motorcycle riders. Added to all of this they had a display of their Cobra products including alarms and their Park Master parking sensors, along with some Rosen screens linked to games systems that helped show their quality and functionality to consumers and the trade alike.

Stinger were also on the Celsus stand, showing off the new DSI speed camera detection unit. The system is modular meaning it can be added to and has numerous features that are truly unique including a slimline card option. M.E.N will be looking at both of these products in more depth soon.

CONNECTS2 CLARION The Clarion decaled Nissan GT-R was the first thing visitors to their stand would notice. Inside their trailer though was a chance to get a closer look at products like the MX700E double DIN headunit with sat nav. There were also the entry-level single DIN units such as the CZ200E, CZ100E and CZ500E which you will have read all about in last month’s news section. Having a play with them in person though surely helped dealers to feel the quality for themselves.

DE TRADE DE Trade had a good response from the trade for their Sniper range of car security, something they launched at last year’s event and continues to prove popular. Their new armrest mounted screen is another great product, offering an 8.5in screen and DVD player for back seat viewers to watch…perfect for drivers watching their pennies as it means this swivelling screen can do the job of two headrest mounted ones. The infra red Taxi CCTV also looks a useful product, providing clear viewing at night of the inside of cabs, the footage of which is backed up on SD card, with 16 hours of recording time.

FOUR Aside from letting their Four Master experts loose as ‘car doctors’ during the Auto Sound & Style day of the show, Four also had a range of their products on display. The stunning Garman range were eyecatchers, including the 400W iPaul amp that can have any photo added to the outside at the factory (the one on show having a Union Jack). There was also a chance to check out the impressive Hertz SPL Show sub and find out about their latest Hertz deals, plus inspect packs of their Skinz sound deadening systems. Four also had examples of their Poket OEM style prefab doorbuilds, a way of installing audio into door cards with minimum fuss while retaining factory looks, something that installers would do well to investigate further.

Connects2 take a great proactive approach to the M.E.N Expo, making sure that they represent the full array of what they do as well as possible to the trade. From the Zenec demo cars elsewhere in the halls to full displays of Shuriken batteries, Tsunami installation products and a wall of their fascia plates on their stand. The Vauxhall Insignia on show also proved how they can now interface with that car which was a smart move. On the audio side of things the Ground Zero products and LG headunit range were well displayed, plus new products from BEAT. These included the new mechless BEAT 175 and the top-spec double DIN BEAT N1 unit, which was getting a great response from dealers. M.E.N will take a closer look at this in the future.

DENSION Dension had already produced the Gateway 500 which connects iPod, MP3 player or USB storage devices to car stereos by fibre optic, but they were showing the Gateway 300 kit off, that does the same for most VW and Audi CAN equipped vehicles. There was also a chance for dealers to familiarise themselves with Dension’s Wi Drive system, allowing for Wifi internet in cars, something that they may not have had a chance to do since its launch.

IMCOPEX Coming soon, but on display, was a range of Haztec warning lights and light bars. As they pointed out, even installers may find orange lighting on vans important if trying to travel to jobs on site. The Novus range was clearly the key area of their stand though, the fantastic Eye Plus black box video system being a particular star of the stand, being their latest offering and providing something quite unique to the comprehensive Novus range. A rundown of this product was run in last month’s M.E.N magazine, but for more information contact Novus directly.

IN-PHASE The M.E.N cover star Nissan 350Z took pride of place on In-Phase’s stand, but for those looking past that there were some great new parts. First off was In-Phase’s new mechless headunit, keeping up with the modern need for just digital music. They also had a new ultra compact sub on show, plus the full compliment of In-Phase’s new super slim speakers. Around the other side of the stand it was Car Audio Centre took their turn to talk with dealers. As reported on previously in M.E.N, this is an opportunity for existing dealers to convert their business to a recognised brand and take advantage of national recognition and promotion plus even better deals on stock buying. As CAC point out, this could be a way for independent retailers to fight back against national chains.

KENWOOD Plenty of new innovation on this stand. The new 11-digit display and easier access buttons on the entry-level KDC-314A headunit, the iPod ready KDC-4547UW or different display colour KDC-4047UG, the new double line display on the KDC-5047U, the soon to be released mechless

JKM How impressive was the noise coming from Ian Pinder’s van? If you weren’t there then the answer is “very” (if you were there, then the answer may be “ouch”). Considering that JKM’s G4 in-car PC was

Phew. On top of this the Kenwood Scirocco continued to get plenty of admirers.

the source for that noise is proof of just how versatile JKM’s system is. Inside their Focus RS, a more subtle, factory-looking install of the G4 was in place, allowing visitors to sit inside and get a full demo of the range of useability that the system offers. With further developments in the works, JKM’s offerings in the in-vehicle computer field should continue to excite the trade and end user alike.

KNIGHTWATCH Aside from security products like remote wireless security sensors for van doors and the like, Knightwatch were making a big show of their innovative new Alcholock system. MIDBASS Winners of M.E.N Expo’s Best Stand award, visitors could see new product within the impressive central archway or check out the fine array of demo cars, including a lovely new GT-R! Product wise there was the new Vibe Black Air band pass enclosure, an active box with wiring kit included. There are also new 8in or 12in Lite Air subs which are available as passive or active woofers. The Vibe CBR range is also replaced now, with vented 10in and 12in active boxes in the new design with remote control. They also supply Plantronics Bluetooth headsets, often considered the ultimate in their field and looking more like jewellery than a lump of plastic for the ear. This system can also be had for disabled users, indicating blue badge holder parking spaces and similar. Additionally Pama

NAVIGON The whole Navigon range was on display, but the Expo was all about the new 8450 Live. This supersleek navigation device is not only stunning to look at (especially using the iPod type of glass for a really classy feel) but it comes with fantastic 3D mapping, rammed full of detail. There are currently discussions underway that could add live services such as Google, tracking and truck routing too which would make this unit even more impressive.

PRO PLUS Pro Plus took over an entire corner of the show, being supported by a huge number of customers on the Auto Sound & Style day. With so many cars rammed with Rockford or Diamond Audio products, it was a great chance for visitors to see the product in action for themselves. Pro Plus were keen to point out the

system, which they reckon is a great product for dealers, with trick functions like the ability to reprogram the data screen should wheels and tyres be swapped around on the car. Dealers could also look at their HID kits, which should soon be available and able to work with CAN cars without flashing warning lights on the dash. On top of this was a new four sensor front parking kit which has self-learning ability, ideal if vehicles are fitted with bullbars or similar.

PARROT Aside from the uber stylish Stark home audio speakers that Parrot had on display and the high spec digital picture viewers, the main point for Parrot was to get dealers upto speed with the newly refreshed MKI range of Bluetooth hands-free products. They also showed off the RKi400 headunit, which not only allows for hands-free calling (including voice recognition dialling) but can swallow an iPod or iPhone inside, charging it at the same time as allowing full access to the digital music stored within. It also has a rather nice full colour widescreen on the front of the single DIN unit.

TRACK IT NOW Track It Now were offering dealers special offers on their tracking product during the event, with large savings available. The main reason for them attending was to find even more dealers, so if you missed the show and want to find out more about the advantages of their product then don’t hesitate to contact them.

/ CAR AUDIO / PREPARE FOR SUMMER

Preparefor

Summer

Are there steps dealers can take to profit from the hot Summer months? M.E.N investigates

When it comes to preparing what you aim to sell in the Winter months it’s a relatively simple idea. As retailers to car users, you simply need to offer them the solutions to the poor weather and the problems that can create. Anything from anti-freeze to tracking systems for cars stored up over the dark months is fair game, then it’s just the build up to Christmas and any discounting a retailer may want to do in January that need thought. When it comes to the Summer though retailers really need to box clever. That period of time when the evenings become lighter until the beginning of October is when a lot of people are getting out and about… and adding to their cars becomes more of a priority. For this reason then retailers need to make sure they can pre-empt demand and make sure they profit as much from the hotter weather as they can. But how can this be done? Like any retailing it’s about figuring out who your target market are and then working out what it is they are likely to want or to need. With the mobile electronics retailer looking at the Summer period, it may be easiest to break it down into two key types of consumer; the car audio enthusiast and the leisure market. On the car audio side of the market this can also be broken down further, with the hardcore audiophile on one side and the general enthusiast on the other. For the hardcore, much of their audio builds will have taken place over the Winter, and the Summer months will see them demonstrating their creations and attending shows. This can mean unforeseen problems arising with their builds and quick, often last minute fixes will be sought. If you’ve been helping these customers with the supply of parts already then you may have an idea of the types of fixes they are likely to need. Having quick access to them can mean the difference between you getting their custom or someone else with the parts in stock getting them. For the general enthusiast however there is the chance to nurture their enthusiasm in the Summer. Open days are a great example of this, allowing customers to see and hear some impressive demo cars (whether your own, your customers’ or those from your suppliers). These can provide a great way to get these part-time audiophiles to your store and then show them what’s possible. It may even inspire some of them to book cars in with you for the Winter months if you also offer an installation service. At the very least you’ll be able to help them realise what’s possible, and suggest the best products to achieve what they want. Similarly, attending shows as a shop can do the same kind of job for you. With the right demo cars on show you can attract people from other

28

|

MOBILEELECTRONICSNEWS.EU

parts of the country to you or at the very least be able to sell on a Sunday for example when your shop may otherwise be shut. While a rest is good, there aren’t many opportunities over the Winter to be selling product every day of the week, so giving up some weekends may be a sacrifice worth making. On the leisure side of the market, the mobile electronics retailer has a few products already that they should make a point of promoting. The key thing you’d be wanting to think about is families going on holiday and what that might entail. For example, if they’re driving to their destination, either in the UK or Europe, then there are products perfectly aimed at them. Rear seat entertainment is the obvious one, a way to keep bored children out of mischief in the back. There are so many options in this field that it’s likely you’ll find a solution for any customer…and hard-wired headrest screens give you the chance to offer free installation and dazzle them with your professional service. Sat nav is the other obvious product to aim at these customers, again the breadth of choice in this field providing scope to cater for just about everyone. With European mapping available in many systems, the customers heading abroad are the perfect ones to aim the higher end systems at, products that throughout the rest of the year may take a bit more selling. Less obviously perhaps is the appeal at this time of security products. Cars left on the driveways of empty houses or in airport car parks while the owners are away for a couple of week can be targets of theft. Tracking systems are therefore a clearly relevant product to promote to this market but they may be unwilling to sign up to the annual premiums for, what they perceive, is the sake of

a few weeks. If that’s the case then an upgrade of alarm/immobiliser is the next thing to offer, especially with products like the new Viper 570i alarm that can remote start the vehicle via iPhone or Blackberry if the battery is dying, or will alert the owner via those smart phones to any tampering with the vehicle. And while it isn’t in the “mobile electronics” market as such, dealers shouldn’t be shy about offering physical security devices such as steering locks, as they still compliment the other electronic offerings you can provide. In fact, for the Summer months an expansion of your offerings outside of mobile electronics shouldn’t be ignored. Bike racks, European travel kits and even tents could provide additional income streams and either act as upsell items to those coming in for your more traditional products, or attract new customers in on their own merit… after which you can show them the marvels of the electronic age. Even products like power hook-ups for camping sites or 12v adapters for in-car use could be explored as the leisure market is one of the few areas in the UK that is showing growth at the moment. If you look at the amount of space your local Halfords dedicates to this side of motoring in the Summer months it gives you a clue as to the profitability! Clearly the Summer months do offer the mobile electronics retailer a chance to increase their profits, and while that may involve taking a step out of their comfort zone or spending a bit of time and perhaps money in telling people about their related offerings, the pay-offs should more than make up for it. So make sure you don’t let those bigger profits pass you by this Summer as it’s not too late to get yourself prepared and get those customers coming to you in droves.

WHOLE IN ONE A new generation of integrated devices are driving in-car excellence In a world of increasing connectivity and functionality, motorists can enjoy more and more sophisticated gadgets – yet there are still pros and cons. Legendary electronics manufacturer Motorola has at last ventured in-car to offer drivers some solutions that are all-pro… Anyone who has driven a car, had a phone conversation or listened to music in the last five years (pretty much everyone then, it’s fairly safe to say) will be aware of the new dilemma posed by mobile electronic devices: there’s a whole bunch of ‘em. Want to check out those hot new tracks you downloaded? Grab your iPod®. Waiting for a client to call? Keep that phone handy. Not sure where we’re headed? Better take the satnav too. Before you know it you’re juggling devices, and – potentially – not paying quite as much attention to the road ahead as you should. It’s no wonder that consumers of all kinds have been crying out for increasing convergence in the mobile electronics arena. Music-enabled mobile phones have seen some success with the younger crowd, for example, while in the business sector satnav is starting to be paired with communications, albeit falteringly. Progress has been patchy. Until now, that is.

”First to pull off Bluetooth® hands-free, music, satnav and info, all in one sexy package.” Striking features If all that Motorola’s selection of new devices had to offer was good looks, there’s a small chance these products would pass without much comment; spoiled as we are by all the sleek, sexy plastic on the market today. It’s fair to say though that the various MOTONAVTM models, and their little brother the TK30, aren’t just pretty faces. Indeed, “feature-rich” barely does them justice. The flagship MOTONAVTM TN765t boasts a class-leading 5.1” touchscreen. Speak your destination and the spoken directions will take you there (anywhere in Europe) while the unique multi-view display keeps maps visible at all times, even when you’re using other functions.

34

|

MOBILEELECTRONICSNEWS.EU

On the comms side it gets even better. The Bluetooth® hands-free relay calls through the car stereo for topnotch audio quality, and can speak your text messages out loud, even interpreting text-speak. When you want to make a call, MOTONAV™ makes life easy with automatic phonebook download. You control your music through the touchscreen interface too, and the unit is smart enough to pause your tunes when calls come in or directions need to be given. However, the icing on this integrated cake is what Motorola calls “connected services”. The MOTONAVTM brings you local weather, traffic, fuel prices, safety camera alerts1 and, by hooking into GoogleTM local search, gives you much, much more.

“An aftermarket in-car controller that compares to a factory fit.” The business Motorola boffins clearly have business users in mind with the MOTONAVTM range, not that the prices are likely to be offputting for the private motorist. By stressing the business benefits of a professionally installed aftermarket in-car controller, Motorola is sure to attract the attention of the high mileage crowd. Reduced vehicle wear-and-tear, reduced fuel costs, and even lower insurance premiums are the sorts of things that MOTONAVTM has been shown to deliver. They are also the sorts of things that get serious fleet manager interest. Increased safety and concentration levels are not to be sneezed at either, with the reduced risk of accidents and traffic violations a bonus for every driver. Where will the convergence trend take us all in the future? Who can say. But in a world where holograms and artificial intelligence aren’t the norm quite yet, Motorola’s MOTONAVTM and TK30 devices offer discerning drivers the richest, most seamless in-car experience yet.

CLARION Clarion have three great new units in this entry-level bracket. The CZ100E has a low suggested retail price of just £99 and offers users CD-R and CD-RW playback, MP3 and WMA file compatibility and a front AUXin jack to support a standalone MP3 player. With the optional addition of the BLT373 Bluetooth transceiver the new unit also allows for the safe receiving and making of phone calls. Similarly the CZ200E offers all of the same features but adds the all-important direct iPod playback and control via the supplied USB cable. The CZ200E also boasts an RDS-EON tuner with 18 FM and 6 MW/LW station presets, all for a suggested retail of £129.

They come with external microphones and the Bluetooth also allows for music streaming via an A2DP enabled device. The very latest headunit from In Phase though is the new IPS-100SSD, which is a mech-free unit (no CD player). Music is played via USB or SD, with the AUX-in allowing MP3 players such as iPods to be connected. It comes with much of the same basic spec as all of In Phase’s headunits mentioned here, and has the advantage of a very shallow mounting depth.

JVC The KD-R311(suggested retail price of £89.99) is a superbly well featured entry level CD Tuner offering a comprehensive list of features worthy of a unit costing much more. This simple front panel layout and uncluttered design belies the wealth of features available to owners of this fantastic new CD tuner. A front panel mounted auxiliary input enables analogue audio connectivity from any portable audio device. RDS will keep customers in tune, while line and sub outputs allow connection to external amplifiers. Meanwhile, the KD-R411 has a front panel mounted USB port for connection to MP3/WMA players, making this unit a star performer in its class. High power MOSFET output stage, 24 bit DAC and that front panel mounted USB port are great features, again with subwoofer and line outputs to add external amplification and allow speaker upgrades. The KD-R411 is also steering remote control ready. The KD-R511 (suggested retail price of £119.99) offers iPod/iPhone compatibility and aux input, which gives it all the flexibility of the units already mentioned. However, it also offers separate colour selection for controls and display, allowing a close colour match to many dashboard colours. Lastly for 2010 is the KD-R611 (suggested retail price of £139.99), which is ready for Bluetooth upgrade and comes with a USB port which offers two-way control of your iPod/iPhone plus an auxiliary input on the front panel. This unit also features many audio features enabling customers to build an amplified

Adam Rayner muses on Mobile Phone security….

In the early days of my involvement with 12 Volt technology the Mobile phone was a big clunky thing and the performance difference between those that were proper car phone kits and those that were hand held was huge. It’s why the Car Phone Warehouse has its name, as no-one really refers to “car phones” any more, do they? And during that time, many of the traditional dealers in in-vehicle technology

The over-the-air attack requires more sophisticated equipment, namely a fake base station which queries the mobile phone.” And that was some years back, so it is with us now. Friend Two is freshly in love, terribly sweet. This bloke has worshipped her from afar and is now as happy as a schoolboy in love for the first time. She buys him a phone and adds it to her contract as a new 24 month job with the new phone now under her bill to add to hers with a new handset each into the bargain. They commence to share sweet nothings by text and speech - unlimited texts and 1,000 minutes a month was the deal. In month one the new Boyphone bill cranks to £4,500 on sex lines and dodgy text receipts he never sees. Over one weekend when dozens of calls were made, they were busy as rabbits in a hotel and they have a receipt. New boyfriend isn’t going to be calling sex lines during that time, even if he HAD been, which he hadn’t. It’s just not him. We await developments. I have one network's press office on the case as well who are not really aware of this as being common yet but if I were you and you sell phones, make it a very high security issue within your business, just like pointing one of your cameras right at the till. You know if this is a risk in your own place….

Take care, now and avoid the old BOOMPH tinkle …

Cobra - celebrating 35 years of vehicle security and safety excellence Cobra was a pioneer in the vehicle security arena as far back as 1975, designing and manufacturing some of the world’s very first alarms. Today, Cobra remains at the forefront of vehicle security design, directly supplying vehicle manufacturers with many of the world’s standard fit security systems, and using this know-how to develop bespoke solutions for aftermarket installation. In the UK you can rely on Cobra for a complete range of vehicle security and electronic systems. Our product range extends from Cobra anti-theft alarms for both cars and motorcycles, to Cobra ParkMaster aftermarket parking sensors, Rosen retro fit in-car DVD systems, BlueConnect Bluetooth handsfree systems and E-Cruise aftermarket cruise control and speed limiters. Cobra is the European market leader for GPS stolen vehicle tracking with full European coverage as standard, and the new CobraTrak First range reduces fitting time by up to 50 percent. All of Cobra’s alarms and tracking solutions are Thatcham accredited and recognised by major insurers.
