SELL THE DREAM I have a confession to make. Despite working in the aftermarket for well over 10 years I’ve always been more into the hit of horsepower or the look of a new set of alloy wheels than the pounding bass of an install. I put this down to early flirtations with audio in my Mk1 Fiesta where 6x9 speakers on the parcel shelf led to numerous break-ins by toerags suspecting a boot full of amps and subs. over the years since though I’ve been lucky enough to sit in some of the finest audio demo cars to be built and have learnt to appreciate just how incredible a proper install can sound, from kidney rupturing, hair-raising bass to mind moving sound quality. In fact, I maintain some cars I’ve sat in have outdone the audio of any concert or cinema I’ve experienced. regardless though, it’s always seemed something that others have done, the cost and amount of equipment needed ruling me out. Then on one sunny day I was driving down the M11 to the M.E.N office. Not having any iPod playing facilities I’d burnt a CD from iTunes of some of my favourites, finally deciding it was time to stop listening to the drivelling chat on Radio 1. It’s been a long time since I had control of the songs I listened to, but with a nearly full tank of petrol, a Garmin nuvi 3790T for company and over 200bhp at my disposal, the windows were down and the tunes were on. Then the first bars of ‘The Riverboat Song’ by Ocean Colour Scene came on, that punchy intro goading me into putting my foot down as I cranked the volume up, weaving through the middle lane hoggers almost as if the song had become the soundtrack to my own driving movie. That song finished and was followed by a hit from Linkin Park, which just kept my foot in and the warm wind rushing through the open window. It was a perfect driving moment. Well, almost perfect. Despite having nagging thoughts about my car’s engine needing a service soon, there being performance gains that I haven’t yet realised from the car and a feeling that a rear anti-roll bar could help the
handling, the audio was bugging me. The standard speakers couldn’t quite handle the volume, buzzing and rattling in the doorcards at certain points. It was then it dawned on me…this is resolvable! In recent times I’ve been in many cars that have stealthy installs which have sounded crystal clear and punchy at any volume. I can have that too now, without compromising performance. And I could fit tyre pressure sensors and finally get the Parrot MKi kit that’s been sat at home installed. Basically what I realised is, thanks to exposure to the products and demo vehicles in the mobile electronics world I now know I can have it all; performance, handling and all the electronic wizardry that companies like yours sell to enhance my driving experience. And I want it. What I’m getting to is, while in my case I may be a bit slow on the uptake, mobile electronics can enhance the driving pleasure of any driver no matter who they are, people just need to be told about what’s available or get first hand experiences of them. I now dream of a car that can do everything including playing my music loud and clear, and it’s that dream that dealers should be selling to customers and potential customers. As a magazine, M.E.N will aim to help you find ways of doing that, from features on techniques and advice with selling and marketing, to guides on the products and services that are available to you. Working within the industry, whether you sell interface kits, parking sensors or subs and amps, if you believe in the products and the benefits they give then you need to sell those benefits, spread the message wide and help people like me realise just how Editor much better things can be.

HERTZ ENTRYLEVEL AMPS Hertz amplifiers hit new heights with this range of solidly built high quality, entry-level amplifiers. The range, which includes class AB 2 and 4 channel amplifiers, as well as a class D monoblock, are cooled by a solid die-cast heat sink for maximum heat dissipation. They also offer a business-like design, which will look at home in any install. Hertz HE features both speaker and line inputs offering a pseudo balanced noise-free input with great flexibility, while the Automatic Remote Turn On facility available on the speaker level inputs only, makes connection to existing OEM head units a doddle. The range uses only the finest components as skimping at this stage seriously compromises final performance, quality and reliability. This is why, as Hertz claim, you will only find hi spec capacitors, transformers and MOSFETs inside. In contrast to the deep black heat sink is a silver end panel set in at each end of the amplifier. These not only complete the visual impact but also hide wiring and controls leaving a sleek looking install with no exposed wiring or scruffy interconnects. The three amplifiers in the range are: HE 2 Class AB at 400 Watts Max, HE 4 Class AB at 800 Watts max and the HE 1D at 900 Watts max. Suggested retail prices range from just £99.99 to £199.99 and are available now. Contact: Four, 0845 4501594 or fourcars.co.uk

Big Black Project
Meet the recordbreaking Ground Zero demo car built wholly from Connects2 supplied audio
Connects2 are well known for their OEM work and vehicle interfaces, but their audio offerings are gaining notoriety all of the time. So much so in fact that when Matt Sprigg asked the audio oracle that is Adam Rayner who he should talk to about equipment for his street bass project car, Adam pointed him in Connects2’s direction. Despite not being a massive figure in the audio world, Matt has been competing since around 2004, generally using pre-built audio cars that he tweaked to get the ultimate performance from the installs. He was planning to retire for a while from competition, but a trip to the dB Drag and Bassrace World Finals reignited the need to hear car audio loud once again. This time though he was starting from scratch. Taking a Mitsubishi Shogun (3-litre V6 petrol!) Matt has essentially stripped it down and built something phenomenal from that empty shell. He’s gone to the lengths of removing the sunroof to help keep the noise in and gone to great pains to ensure the Ballistic sound deadening material is everywhere it needs to me…and at greater thickness than it needs to be too. Numerous ideas were thrown around for the actual design of the install, for example, originally a wall of eight 15in Ground Zero subs were planned for behind the driver’s seat. However, the set-up now uses eight Ground Zero 12in GZNW 12 subs in the wall, each powered by a Ground Zero Nuclear GZNA 1.2500DXII 2300wrms amp. The port for the subs ushers air in the longest possible curve by exiting the wall to the side, just behind the driver’s seat, and the punch is immense. At its second ever Propper Droppers event, Project Big Black recorded an amazing 156.3dB at 20Hz, making it the
14
www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
first install ever to break the 155dB barrier at 20hz. When added to the results at 25 Hz, 33Hz and 40Hz he averaged 155.9dB, which is an incredible achievement. Project Big Black is also unbeaten in the Bassrace competition format so far this year, a performance that has already qualified Matt for a place in the Bassrace World Finals next March. “Being the 149.9dB Bassrace World Champion is what I’m aiming for” claims Matt confidently.
Matt has essentially stripped it down and built something phenomenal from that empty shell.
|CoVEr StorY
The thing to note about this build though is that, aside from the Kenwood source, everything else in the install is available for dealers to sell exclusively from Connects2. The Ground Zero product naturally takes the limelight, which is about time too as in Europe their subs, amps and speakers are widely used for competition. Over here the name is growing all the time and with Matt as a spokesman and rolling demo for their equipment demand will surely only increase. Matt’s highly enthusiastic about the quality and delivery Ground Zero offers, claiming that just one of the amp and subs that he’s used would be capable of hitting around 145dB and get everyone in the car park looking the user’s way. When you realise he’s got eight of those pairings in Big Black you may get a fuller understanding of the punch it packs! The speakers up front shouldn’t be ignored either, perhaps too much for an everyday type install, these PA-type speakers handle their role perfectly. Only three mids and two tweeters in each door to cope with midbass and treble, but even when cranked to full volume they add enough clarity to please the vast majority of audiophiles, the amps for which are mounted in the rear door. Aside from the Ground Zero product though, Matt has employed Connects2’’s other offerings to great effect. There are a host of Shuriken high performance batteries built within the install (and one under the bonnet), nine packs of Ballistic sound dampening material plus Tsunami capacitors and more of their cabling than Matt ever realised he’d end up using. It’s probably pushed the Pajero’s weight to well over three tonnes and means Matt’s had to run two alternators and is planning a suspension overhaul to cope… so it’s not exactly what you would call a daily driver. With 55mph being about as fast as Matt will push it there are probably quicker ways to get to shows, but when the menacing black bulk arrivess…that’s when it comes into its own. “Everytime I sit in Big Black and turn it up loud I give myself the bass giggles, All bassheads have had them at one point or another…that uncontrollable laugh you get because of how ridiculous it sounds and feels,” adds Matt, “I have sat in most of the biggest installs of the past few years and have had
the same thing happen, it’s a sign your system is hitting the right spot, feeding that addiction that all us bassheads are inflicted with. I'm proud of what we have achieved, it’s been a tough 5 months and I couldn’t have done it without he help of my wife Lou, my friends and family and of course the guys at Connects2.” He goes on to talk about the audio; “The system exceeds what I had planned, with both the subs and the front end throwing out huge amounts of loud, clear sound. Everything from the Shuriken BT100 batteries and Tsunami cabling to the Ground Zero subs, speakers and amplifiers have come together to produce a system that really shows off what it is all capable of. But the fun doesn't stop here I am constantly tweaking the system to get more from it and have some cool plans for a Car-Puter install over the winter, so keep your eyes peeled!”. If you want to keep up-to-date with Matt and his Connects2 supported project, then you can follow the build on twitter @projectbigblack or via the blog at www.projectbigblack.co.uk.
thE CoNNECtS2 VIEw “We’re really impressed with the dedication that Matt’s shown to the project and equally impressed with the results it’s achieved. Project Big Black really shows off the capabilities of the products he’s installed and with his dedication to showing them off, we’re sure even more people will get turned onto the Ground Zero, Tsunami, Shuriken and Ballistic brands. To have our products associated with Matt’s achievements is the sort of publicity that you really can’t buy, so we’re very happy!”
thE BuIlD Painted with satin back rattle cans in a mate’s unit but predominantly outside the back of his house, Matt and his partner battled the elements and plenty of grazed knuckles to get the project done. There was help from Craig Dillow, John Aitkins, Jon Young, Adam Daniels and Eric Sprigg along the way, but it really was a homegrown project.

Double DIN
Headunits M.E.N takes a look at the most recent new double DIN headunits from the major suppliers.
BEat
The BEAT N1 is gaining fans for its huge functionality at relatively affordable suggested retail prices. The unit comes with a 6.95in high resolution digital LCD touchscreen and built-in navigation. Full European Teleatlas mapping is included and users can all the access features you would expect such as Points of Interest and Recent Destination. On the entertainment side of things the BEAT N1 has it covered too, offering iPod compatibility with full control and CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, VCD, DivX, WMA, Jpeg, MP4 and MP3 playback. With the digital music, the track and folder is displayed on the high resolution screen, which incidentally is on a fully automatic tilt mechanism to allow for disc loading. Control is via the touchscreen with its graphic user interface and users can opt for a dual function screen when using the navigation. There’s also the benefit of dual zone display output for the rear seats plus an AV output, a video input and a 4x50W power capability. To top it all off, the BEAT N1 also gives users Bluetooth hands-free calling (iPhone compatible), the unit allowing phone books to be transferred and displaying incoming calls, missed calls etc. Dialling is done via the touchscreen key pad and calls can be answered and ended from the front panel. With a built-in microphone and background noise reduction the call quality is also taken care of. The Bluetooth also allows for A2DP audio streaming which is a useful extra. While customers may not be as familiar with the BEAT name as other major brands, this unit could certainly sway them with its functionality and attractive retail price. alpINE
The latest from Alpine are the iXA-W407BT, CDE-W203Ri and the INE-S900R. The iXA-W407BT is essentially a mech-less double DIN unit aimed squarely at digital entertainment, boasting a 4x50W high power amp, Dual Zone entertainment and two AUX inputs for using as a system’s source. It’s compatible with iPod and iPhone with a USB port and cable included, making sure most digital media formats are taken care of. Videos can be played via iPod too on the 7in high resolution screen, with easy navigation through videos or songs on that touchscreen. A Parrot Bluetooth kit is also built-in, plus the iXAW407BT can be upgraded as it’s IMPRINT ready (sound processor), has a camera input and is steering wheel remote ready too, so there’s even opportunities for up-selling. The CDE-W203Ri takes music a step further by adding CD-R/-RW/MP3/AAC/WMA playback. There’s a front USB port and compatibility with iPhone 3G and 3GS plus full speed connection to iPhone and iPod. Like the previous unit there’s a 4x50W amp and a set of preamp outputs to help build a system, however Parrot Bluetooth hands-free requires the KCE-400BT module. There’s also no video playback, but it’s suggested retail price reflects this and offers customers Alpine quality at an affordable price. The INE-S900R (featured elsewhere in this issue) is the ultimate unit, offering a double DIN Navigation solution with the capabilities to play just about every kind of media format as well as offer Bluetooth hands-free. With a new interface that can display two views at once, advanced navigation and the ability to add one of Alpine’s DVB-T tuners or HCE-C107D wide-viewing angle cameras it offers customers just about everything they will need from their headunit. It looks good too, with its 6.1in LCD touchscreen that offers clear displays of everything that’s going on (including things like radio station name displays etc). It’s a premium package but you can bet customers will be glad to spend the extra once they’ve used it. Contact: alpine Electronics, 0845 3131650 or alpine-electronics.co.uk

Kenwood’s DpX503u boasts a large 4-line display that gives excellent information in conjunction with its front ipod Direct uSB input. a front auX input is also available for quick connection to portable music players and navigation units with CD, Mp3, wMa, aaC and waV format files supported. the auX input can be used with the Dual Zone feature to playback only to the rear speakers for example. For handsfree mobile phone use an optional KDC-Bt300 interface is available, which is clearly an up-sell opportunity. on an aesthetic note, full colour variable illumination for both the display and the control knobs can be set to match the user’s car dashboard illumination perfectly. large easy to understand operation keys and controls knobs make this unit a breeze to use even with the most complicated operations. Kenwood’s best selling all-inone multimedia DNX5260Bt unit meanwhile has many of the features of its more expensive siblings with a slightly smaller 6.1in LCD touch control screen. It’s designed to be extremely easy to use despite extensive features including Parrot Bluetooth, Garmin
SoNY
The stylish double DIN XAV-70BT and XAV-60 headunits boast a 7in and 6.1in widescreen WVGA touch screen respectively, which Sony believes allows for a wealth of visual entertainment and intuitive user experience. The ultrabright WVGA offers high resolution pictures of 800 x 480 pixels, a resolution five times higher than mainstream QVGA AV centre displays. Sony has applied its expertise in quality video to in-car entertainment, by completely separating the signal circuit and power supply for video and those for audio so that there is no signal interference. Both models feature a CD/DVD/VCD player that supports MP3/AAC/ WMA audio files, DivX/ MPEG-1/MPEG-2/ MPEG-4 (Simple Profile) video files and JPEG picture files. They also sport a full-speed USB port, which gives the freedom to connect with almost any digital music player, whether it’s a WALKMAN®, iPod, iPhone or a USB memory
jVC
JVC Mobile has launched three double DIN CD Receivers, KW-XR811, KW-XR611 and KW-XR411 adding unprecedented choice to owners of cars with an oversized radio aperture. full European navigation, DVD/CD playback and iPhone/iPod direct control. Like the previous unit the hard keys and GUI can have their colours changed to match to the user’s dashboard, which makes it a really easy to live with unit. No wonder it’s so popular with users. At the top end of Kenwood’s double DIN range is the stunning DNX9260BT headunit. It’s a true multimedia unit that comes with 5.1 surround sound output for the ultimate in-car sound experience. Touch screen control, for operation of built-in Parrot Bluetooth, Garmin full European navigation (with 3D Building Graphics, Lane Assist and Junction View) and DVD/ CD playback is all supported. For iPod/iPhone users connecting their player to the USB input also allows full touch screen searching with a function similar to iPod’s coverflow. Additionally video files can be separately displayed on rear screens for family entertainment on the move. With the wide 7in VGA colour TFT screen, advanced voice control and removable faceplate, Kenwoods DNX9260BT headunit offers everything that those serious about in-car entertainment could possibly want. Great sound, massive compatibility and top quality navigation and hands-free make this stunning unit a real trump card for any dealer. Contact: Kenwood, 01923 816444 or kenwood-electronics.co.uk
drive. Not only does it allow easy connection to a variety of devices, but it also allows the change and control of the stored music files from the head unit. The Graphical User Interface is also simple to make selections from the AV centre’s touch screen. When connected to an iPod/iPhone, users can search by artist, album or song title directly on the display. The layout of the playback screen is simple showing a large album artwork image with the name of song, album and artist. At a touch of the screen, virtual buttons pop up for functions such as skip, shuffle, pause, etc. You can also change the track or album by simply sliding your finger across the screen right, left, up or down. Both units also offer ZAPPIN™ and SensMe™ features exclusively from Sony. One touch of the “ZAP” button begins scanning and playing highlight clips of the user’s music collection so they can catch the song that feels just right. Another way to play music to suit the mood is by making a selection in the “SensMe channels” or the “SensMe mood”. Proprietary 12 tone analysis technology automatically sorts the music from a WALKMAN® or USB stick into different types of mood (such as dance, relaxing or emotional) allowing a choice of ‘mood channels’ from the music library. Channels such as Freeway, Morning Commute, Midnight Cruise, etc, specific moods to driving, have been added to the Xplod car stereo range. With the XAV-70BT and XAV-60, users can choose from a total 21 different moods in the SensMe channels. For wireless music streaming and hands-free phone calls, the XAV-70BT also has an integrated Bluetooth® feature which is the major difference. range includes an RDS FM tuner to keep users tuned to their favourite stations wherever they travel, while the MP3/WMA compatible CD section uses a 24-bit DAC to ensure music is reproduced faithfully, delivering crystal clear sound to a 4x50 Watt output stage. For those looking for more, two pairs of line outputs are provided for full range, or the rear outputs can be configured specifically
as a subwoofer output complete with bass level control. A front panel- mounted auxiliary input is also featured across the range. The KW-XR611 adds independent variable colour control for display and controls, offering a huge pallet of colours for drivers to choose from. The 611 also features two-way control for iPod/iPhone via the front panel mounted USB port. Bluetooth is available via an optional accessory. The KW-XR811 tops the range and features a TI/Burr Brown 24-bit DAC and also features two USB ports compatible with iPhone/ iPod and also the Bluetooth adaptor which is included. pIoNEEr
Pioneer offers double DIN solutions across all levels of budget. The AVH-3200BT is a great entry into double DIN headunits, offering the all essential compatibility with iPod/iPhone. It allows music and visual playback for almost every commercially available format with USB port, AUX in and front loading SD card port. For families there’s a Dual Zone function meaning optionally fitted rear screens can play independently of the front, so the driver and front passenger can enjoy some music. And with the easily customisable Sonic Center Control and Auto EQ, plus 3 RCA pre-outs to build a system with and an 8-band graphic equaliser that sound is going to be good. The other benefit of this unit is the built-in Parrot Bluetooth hands-free kit and with the possibilities of upgrading to Sat Nav with the optional AVIC-F220 unit it’s a great starting point. The next unit is the AVIC-F320BT, which has been featured in this magazine before, and offers Sat Nav and Bluetooth hands-free as standard. There’s a 4.3in touch screen with customisable short-cut menu that is also detachable for added security. Naturally music can be played via most formats and utilises the same kind of great audio experience as the AVH-3200BT, however it doesn’t support video playback. For the ultimate though, the AVIC-F920BT is hard to beat. This unit offers full-

scale navigation, entertainment and communication in one perfect-fit system. There’s a unique 3D graphic touch screen interface that gives direct access to all functions. The Sat Nav is a feature of this unit with a comprehensive map database, multiple sensors to ensure accurate positioning in areas where GPS signals may be weak, a Traffic Message Channel to help avoid jams and voice guidance with text-to-speech capabilities. Like the previous unit, the maps are customisable using Pioneer’s NavGate FEEDs PC, iPhone or smart phone application, which includes
The Zenec ZE-MC294 is a great all-in-one moniceiver that allows users to watch movies or listen to music across virtually every possible format. With a high quality LCD display that is consistent in even the most challenging of light conditions, the Zenec unit can play all common formats including CD, MP3, WMA, DVD, VCD, SVCD and Jpeg, with an electronic and mechanical anti-shock system to keep that clarity spot on. The tuner is also worth noting as it offers comprehensive software control of all RDS functions, providing top radio reception even in tricky places. The ZE-MC294 moniceiver is, of course, compatible with iPods and iPhones too, using a cable on the rear side they can be connected with an optional cable. Audio files from these can be controlled by the touchscreen while video files need to be played from the iPod or iPhone themselves. This unit also comes equipped with a Bluetooth module from Parrot, which Zenec believes is a novelty in this price range. This BT solution, based on the CK5000NEW chip set, offers excellent voice quality, with the caller’s number, phone book entries, and further information clearly shown on the moniceiver’s display. The ZE-MC294’s address book is automatically synchronised with the mobile phone’s entries too. Additionally the unit is also upgradeable to add-on things like external monitors, DVB-T tuners, a navigation black box (ZE-NA2000N) or a rear view camera. All settings and functions for these can be controlled on the touchscreen or with the provided infra red remote control. The ZE-NC524 takes things a step further by adding GPS-navigation to the functions of the ZE-MC294. There are 43 Western and Eastern European countries mapped out with

H
eadunits have come a long way over the years, offering so much more than simple music playing facilities. Naturally Alpine continue to be at the forefront of these developments and their latest INES900R double DIN unit pushes things further still. It’s all very well offering a multitude of functions, as many in the market do, but making them easy to use and easy to see can be a little more tricky. However, this is where the new Alpine unit really comes into its’ own thanks to its’ One Look interface. The INE-S900R’s new interface allows drivers to display two applications of their choice on screen, meaning they can view exactly what they want at any time. Using the One Look Navi they can also get two different scales of mapping, for example, the user may choose to have an overview of their route displayed on the main screen, with a zoomed in view on the side screen…or vice versa. They even have the option of putting the Navi screen as the main screen and have information on each iPod song, incoming phone calls etc on the second. Alternatively, any of the functions can also be viewed across the whole of the 6.1in LCD touch screen. The navigation though is a particular selling point of the INE-S900R, incorporating 35 Western and Eastern European countries and using both gyro sensor and a speed pulse feed to ensure accurate positioning at all times, even when in tunnels. Alpine also claim that start-up and route calculations are well ahead of the competition, a 1600km route for example being calculated in under 6secs unlike the common one minute time from competitors. With a built-in TMC tuner for advanced traffic information, the ability to import Personal Point of Interests and features like Highway Mode, this is very much a high-end navigation unit regardless of the host of additional features. Equally useful is the addition of Bluetooth hands-free, offering drivers One Look Safety. Users can see all of
their contacts and make calls from their phonebook with one touch, while incoming call details are displayed in the side screen meaning navigation or other main screen items are not disrupted. However, users may hope that they don’t have to take any phone calls though as the media options make the INE-S900R a highly entertaining module. With a built-in CD/DVD player (MP3/DivX/WMA/AAC compatible), a USB connection for iPod, iPhone or USB sticks and an AUX port on the front panel for use of additional media players there’s plenty to get excited about. Add into that the AM/FM tuner with clear radio display showing station names for easy choices and all the major entertainment areas are more than taken care of. But there are extra facilities too that can benefit both the user and the dealer/installer. The INE-S900R is compatible with Alpine’s DVB-T TV tuners, meaning passengers can watch their favourite programmes, while dealers have the chance of up-selling. On top of this there’s also the unit’s compatibility with the Alpine HCE-C107D wide-viewing angle, compact camera with daytime and nightime mode. When connected, on-screen coloured pylons help guide the user by indicating the closeness of walls and other objects, which is a great extra security feature. Again it also offers dealers the chance to up-sell and make additional profit from installation. As a comprehensive double DIN headunit then, the INE-S900R from Alpine is hard to beat. It offers the ultimate in functionality and with its One Look, One Touch interface it affords users the luxury of having all that functionality easily at hand and easily viewable too. It’s a premium package, but you can be sure that it will only take customers one look to be smitten by this fantastic unit. It’s not a nice selling point, but it’s worth pointing out to potential customers just how vulnerable their car could be when it comes to car key burglaries! You walk downstairs one morning, bleary-eyed and looking forward to that first cup of coffee. Heading past the front door you glance towards it, then away again, then you quickly glance back. Your heart starts beating faster, the front door’s open, it shouldn’t be. Still half awake you struggle to put two and two together. You walk to shut it, but look out onto the driveway first. Something’s wrong. “Where’s my car?”. Your head darts through numerous possibilities in a flash; “did my partner borrow it”, “did I leave it at the pub last night”, “did I park it around the corner”…but then it all clicks…your car has been stolen. this was a similar scenario to that which met someone involved in this magazine recently when they awoke to a Sunday morning. thieves had broken into the house at around 2am, stolen the keys and a handbag full of ID and banking cards, then driven off undetected. It wasn’t until hours later that the crime became apparent, but by that time the late model 3 Series BMw diesel was long gone. while the car was obviously insured, there’s no insurance against the hassle of having to cancel and re-order credit and debit cards…but more importantly there’s no insurance that covers the emotional distress something like that can have on an individual or family (there were two young children asleep upstairs at the time). If you’ve ever experienced a burglary then you’ll understand that feeling, and it’s really not a nice one. The problem is that with aftermarket car security being so good and modern cars being virtually impossible to hot wire, this type of car theft is on the increase. Reselling these cars is obviously going to be easier if the thief has the key too, so breaking into a house for them is a risk worth taking. The key to note about this example too is that it wasn’t an exotic sports car or particularly high value vehicle, it was a normal family car just like thousands of others in the UK…which means the same could happen to any of us!

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
And it’s this point that dealers/installers should be getting across to potential customers. The obvious product to promote alongside it is vehicle tracking systems, as such a system can at least give the Police a better chance of recovering the vehicle. If the car has any visible sticker on it suggesting it has a tracking system then it may also act as a deterrent (although it can also give thieves a clue that there’s a system on board… that they quickly need to try and remove). The only downside to this for a lot of the public is that once their car is stolen they may prefer to not get it back again, even if they like the principle of a tracking system and the fact criminals may end up getting caught. And even if they do get it back there may be damage that will require an insurance claim anyway. This may be why it’s often sports and high value cars that opt for tracking systems as they acknowledge they have an added risk, but that their cars are less likely to be joy ridden, smashed up or simply stripped for parts. That’s not to say tracking systems shouldn’t be offered to all customers, in fact, far from it. With these car key burglaries on the rise, tracking systems can form an integral part of car security packages that dealers and installers could offer. While many dealers/ installers are moaning about a lack of business in traditional areas, this could well be a growth area. Car manufacturers may be taking
business away from traditional car security, from the audio aftermarket etc, but they are not offering solutions for these types of crime. Offering a tracking system as a stage one package, then tracking system and installed CCTV at their home as a stage two package, or finally a stage three package that adds an installed security bollard/post could be the way forward. CCTV systems are readily available and installers should have no problems wiring them up, while security bollards add a visual and physical deterrent, which again are readily available. The added bonus of these two products is that they don’t stay with the car, they stay with the house, meaning a less regular outlay as people tend to move house less often than they change cars. This idea may not be the ideal solution, and even if it was you’d need to promote it heavily in your local area, pointing out that this type of frustrating and upsetting crime is on the rise. Perhaps you have your own ideas about potential solutions or deterrents that could be employed, but the facts are a) car key theft from houses is on the rise, and b) it’s an area where there is a gap in the market for a solution, which makes it worth thinking about in the current climate. Getting the right solution, offering the right products and marketing it correctly could not only prove profitable but also prove to be something that saves car owners from a lot of upset…which is surely priceless.

RecOGnised! If you fit security products then you should need to know about the newly launched Thatcham Recognised Installer scheme
M.E.N recently attended the launch of the Thatcham Recognised Installer scheme. As a bit of background, this is what Thatcham told us: “In 1993 the British Insurance Industry tasked thatcham with the creation of the Vehicle Security Department. one of its first recommendations was the need for a national insurance accreditation body for the installation of vehicle security systems. Following on from that recommendation, the Vehicle Security Installation Board was launched by the home office Minister on 27 june 1994. with the demise of the VSIB in 2009 there was an urgent need for a new national insurance accreditation body. Such an initiative was an imperative requirement for proof of installation by the British Insurance Industry, so that reductions in premiums could be sensibly offered. In September 2009 thatcham invited installers, including those formerly recognised by the VSIB, to become a thatcham recognised Installer (trI) in a basic scheme designed to create a simple assessment and monitoring scheme in the absence of the VSIB. the aim of the new trI scheme, in addition to providing a national insurance accreditation body, is to provide a database of thatcham recognised Installers and electronic registration of certificates through the thatcham website.” Clearly this is an extremely positive move by Thatcham and should hold a number of key benefits for you the installer. In the first instance
one of the real bonuses is the fact that there is this database. Installers need only upload details to it once they have fitted a system and Thatcham will do the rest, meaning no paper to deal with. They also have a dedicated helpline for any problems that arise during the process. This database also means that insurers can check the authenticity of certificates, which should put an end to fraudulent ones being sold on popular auction sites. Installers can have access to the details of those customers they have fitted alarms to, meaning they can contact them and advise of annual servicing to make sure their security is still functioning as it should. Additionally installers will be able to use the new Thatcham logo, as well as have their own logo put on the new certificates for additional marketing. The Thatcham website (thatcham.org) will also list all TRI scheme members which gives a potential source of new customers and, as a result, registered installers will gain recognition by insurers and others as a reliable and trustworthy system supplier. Naturally to join the TRI scheme installers need to apply and must satisfy the following requirements: be a properly constituted company or sole trader, provide proof of public liability insurance of £1,000,000, provide proof of relevant training (via product supplier/ manufacturer), comply with the requirements of the Thatcham TRI criteria and ensure that all TRI installers (where applicable) have undergone a check for criminal background by local law enforcement authorities (PNC minimum). Random inspections and feedback from
customers will serve as a way of monitoring your work with concerns addressed at committee level. Thatcham will look to offer training solutions to help problem areas but in the worst cases TRI status will be revoked…this is something that will happen if Thatcham’s procedures are not complied with or if the installer is involved in criminal activity. “I am sure TRI will improve confidence in installers,” claimed Adam Murray, Technical Manager at insurance giants Aviva, “’reassured’ is the word I would use”. It’s this kind of support that should see TRI members benefit from their customers receiving additional discounts off their insurance premiums in the future. In the meantime though, becoming a part of the TRI scheme will not only help installers to offer a trusted service to potential customers, it can also mean reduced hassle with filling out insurance certificates for yourself and the potential to pick up work via the Thatcham website. Ultimately, it’s a great thing for the industry though as it gives the general public a sense of security when it comes to having alarms and immobilisers fitted to their cars, not only knowing that you are trained to do it, but also that there is a body they can talk to should they have problems. Everyone involved then should benefit from the scheme, so if you want to find out more about the scheme, the registration fees or the benefits, contact Thatcham on the details below. |MC-Incar Specialist
rEtaIlEr rEVIEw
RetaiLeR Review:
Mc-incaR speciaList Established in 1995 MC-Incar is the work of Mick Cicora, who has been working in the mobile electronics business for over 20 years. originally Mick started out offering mobile installation solutions, particularly on the alarm and phone kit side of things, with a unit at home to back that up too. then in 2000 he took the plunge and decided to open up a retail outlet, which is still going strong today. Based on london road as you head out of the city to the south, it’s actually quite an unusual set-up. the shop was in fact once the double garage to the side of his house, but it
B
ut the crucial factor in the company’s success has been the ability of Mick and his staff. When you’re committed to quality then perceived shortcomings in store location etc don’t matter too much, and it’s fair to say that Mick’s reputation keeps customers coming back for more. This is something he’s actively tried to initiate, even in the high times when customers were falling over themselves for audio and security, Mick ensured that MC-Incar never took their custom for granted. “I sold an MX-5 owner a set of speakers and he said ‘you’re not a very good salesman, you could have sold me a sub too’,” recalls Mick, “but I pointed out he only wanted speakers and now he was enquiring about a sub. He liked that I hadn’t tried to sell him things he didn’t need and he’s still a customer, so is his brother, his dad and even his cousin who comes up from London!”. While this may go against some up-selling principles, it follows Mick’s philosophy that he doesn’t try to sell customers products they don’t need. As he points out, a lot of his customers are local and he knows them on a one-on-one basis, so he’s always careful to look after them and make sure they leave with a smile on his face. Like many retailers, MC-Incar have seen difficult times since the recession kicked in, with sales and installation jobs coming in more sporadically than in the early part of this decade when products flew off the shelf. Working with local companies who meet his high standards though, Mick

was the ideal size for the operation to begin. It was very much a case of using best what was at his disposal, but it’s proven to be a great move, establishing itself as a trustworthy and reputable outlet over the years. If you were starting from scratch it may not be exactly how you would design a mobile electronics business as it’s a little tucked away and has limited parking to the front. however, inside the unit is an impressive array of displays, while out the back there’s a huge workshop for installation to take place in.
has expanded MC-Incar’s offerings to the public, with multimedia, audio, security, communications, satellite navigation, accessories, modifications and window tinting all on offer. Looking to the future he’s also planning to start offering interior retrims and he’s entertaining a possible move of premises. A larger unit would allow MC-Incar to expand even further, to hold open days and to really help them shout about their specialist skills to people in the city, which Mick believes could be the way forward. While he admits that on some products he can’t compete with internet sellers on price, he’s like many retailers/installers, who believe it’s down to what they can do rather than what they can’t do that needs to be concentrated on. And what MC-Incar can do is offer the service and quality of installation that has made them a trusted company in the area. With audio products supplied from the likes of Car Electronics and Armour (Kicker, Focal, Orion, Mutant), plus official installer status with Parrot and experience across all the major brands of security, MC-Incar can certainly satisfy customers when it comes to products, but it’s how these are installed that really keeps them coming back. For the most part a lot of his customers now come from word of mouth, although Mick does point out that the company appears in Google searches quite highly, and as he looks to the future he’s being careful on how and where he spends to attract more business. A VW Tiguan R-line and Brabus Smart car are his next demo vehicles, which Mick believes are important tools to sell audio from, but he’s using common sense to keep costs down while still getting the MC-Incar name out there.
One thing’s for sure though, his enthusiasm for the market and what they do at MC-Incar is clear, and if the company continues to put the customer’s needs first and not allow their high standards to slip, then hopefully they’ll still be installing the people of Peterborough’s audio and security solutions for another 15 years. These are the kind of specialists that the industry was built on, with the sort of ethos that has helped it to grow over the years. It’s worth noting that one thing Mick doesn’t enjoy though is the lack of support some suppliers give to him if a product is faulty, often leaving it up to him to offer a replacement at his own cost, which isn’t on. This is the kind of business that needs the support of suppliers, as they are the ones who will build the reputation of the industry and stop people from being put-off from fitting mobile electronics products. While those in it for a quick buck will come and go, companies like MC-Incar prove to be the bedrock of the market and, when times are tough, they should be the first to receive support. This may not happen if suppliers are too short-sighted, but hopefully people like Mick and his company will battle on and emerge victorious as they evolve, expand and come out the wE other side of this waNt You!: recession stronger Are you a retailer who than ever. would like to have your business featured in M.E.N magazine? Kenwood aim three new products squarely at the iPod generation
There are still hundreds of thousands of cars out there on the road that don’t have iPod playing abilities in their audio installs, which means there’s still a massive untapped market. But offering any old device to get their iPods pumping through their car stereos isn’t the way to go. What dealers need to be doing is offering them the best solutions possible, and Kenwood believe they have just the answer. In fact, they have three answers. The new headunits, the KDC-6047U, KDC-BT60U and KIV-700 are designed with the functionality of being able to play digital music files at their very core, and offer some great solutions for the customer.
T This is for those customers who have truly embraced the age of digital music and have no desire to let loose CDs rattle around on the floor of their car.

he KDC-6047U is a sweet looking single DIN headunit with a fold down face to reveal the CD player. The familiar looking wheel controls on the front though hint at where its intentions lie, with a rear wired USB input that can be connected directly to compatible iPods and mass storage USB devices. With a five line, full dot LCD screen users can scroll through their song choices with consummate ease via the wheel controls, or alternatively, they can choose to search via their iPod or iPhone directly with the ‘control by hand’ feature. The headunit also incorporates advanced search modes including ‘related to current track playing’, which shows just how focused on digital music it is. On top of all of this the KDC-6047U also boasts Kenwood’s Sound Excellence digital on-board sound processor, which dramatically improves iPod sound by using a high quality internal digital-to-analogue sound converter with 22 iPod playback EQ settings. There’s also the fact that Kenwood offer owners the chance to use their unique Music Editor software, designed for those who play music through USB storage devices. This software enables USB users to sort their music library into an iPod-like format, meaning they can search using artist, track, playlist etc, and crucially they can play all tracks in random mode.
There are still hundreds of thousands of cars out there on the road that don’t have iPod playing abilities in their audio installs, which means there’s still a massive untapped market. The KDC-BT60U contains all of the same functionality, including the variable key and display illumination that both units share, meaning colour coding to any dashboard should be easy. However, the KDC-BT60U adds another useful feature in the form of a built-in Parrot Bluetooth kit, plus the additional benefit of allowing A2DP music streaming. The KDC-6047U can also be used to make hands-free calls via Bluetooth, although an optional KCA-BT300 unit is needed. It’s worth noting too that both units come with three 4V pre-outs making them perfect sources to build a system around. It’s the same with the revolutionary KIV-700 headunit, a unique mech-less device that’s done away with a disc drive. This is for those customers who have truly embraced the age of digital music and have no desire to let loose CDs rattle around on the floor of their car. The KIV-700 comes with a healthily
sized 3in wide QVGA TFT display which means viewing is made as clear as possible for a single DIN unit. It’s similar to the previous two headunits in many ways including the wheel control on the fascia, the variable illumination and, like the KDC-607U, it’s compatible with the KCA-BT300 unit for Bluetooth hands-free calling.
Kenwood has put into them and their worldrenowned quality, these new look headunits should prove to be massively popular and help everyone to finally have digital music playing abilities in their cars. If you want more details on any of these digital music friendly units then contact Kenwood on the details below.
The real trump card for the KIV-700 though is it’s ability to link up to a USB hub, essentially meaning that two different music storage devices can be connected at any one time. USB device and iPod? No problem. The KIV-700 also comes with some extras including an infra red remote control and a built-in memory that can store graphics and sound files to add to the digital fun. All three of these Kenwood units offer your customers exactly what they’re after, so you shouldn’t have any problems finding the one to suit their needs perfectly. With the thought that

OppORtunity knOcks Number 2: Sell now, install later
Understanding when to sell and when to offer your installation service can make a big difference to your business In this second of a series of features, M.E.N looks at another idea that dealers may want to employ in the way they do business. In the retail environment there are numerous tips and techniques that people can learn to help them succeed, but sometimes there are less obvious areas to consider than things like shop presentation, up-selling and marketing. Take for example your ability to offer a fitting service; is it something that you should always be promoting to your customers? While this may seem like a key factor in actually winning business, the truth is that offering that fitting service could sometimes be held back in order to concentrate on making the sale. The key thing for any retailer is to not only consider the customers’ needs but to also consider your selling options. There’s a fine line though as everything should be done to ensure your customers leave happy with their experience and keen to return to you.
however, you don’t always have to offer a fitting service to achieve this, which is something you and your staff should learn to assess. Four’s Chris woods explains the points at which selling only is the tactic retailers could employ; “if the customer has a fixed budget, then they can get better equipment for their money, and will quite likely come back and spend more money on the install later. People are often impulsive purchasing too, so catch the sale while it’s hot!”. Clearly making these decisions relies on judgement calls by the sales staff and as such it’s very much a sales ‘skill’ that needs to be learnt. The benefits to the retailer are reasonably obvious when taking this approach, in as much as when selling a product it takes very little time to make a profit, whereas installing can take much longer for similar gains. Effectively the profit to time ratio of simply selling an item is nearly always going to be larger than the profit to time ratio of supplying and fitting, so in many cases it’s preferable to supply now and perhaps install later. In the real world it’s not always quite as straight forward, you may for example find that on particular days customers are in short supply and making extra profit from installation is essential, or at other points, if you don’t offer the fitting service then the customer will go elsewhere to somewhere that does. Yet at
34
www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
other points, being able to concentrate on selling a larger volume of product is certainly going to prove to be more profitable. That’s not to forget the clear advantages that offering installation also has, as Chris continues: “there are advantages to customers getting products installed by professionals. Professional installations can save them time, effort and avoid potential damage to their cars from DIY attempts. Professional audio installs can sound better too especially if a free set-up is included, and sometimes warranty can be included with installations, like the 3 year warranty offered by all FOUR Masters! I actually like to see all car audio professionally installed, but retailers should be more aware of what and how they sell, and why!”. And it’s those kinds of questions that are key to maximising profitability. By asking the right questions of your customers and by assessing your selling options you can make the most of their visit while still making sure they get what they need. Both selling only and selling and installing have their advantages and disadvantages, the thing dealers should consider is which option should they be exploring dependent on their customers’ needs. Get the formula right and you could be making bigger profits without having to make huge changes to the way you work.

StEp 5 & 6: Once the heater controls are removed, you’ll see 2 X phillips screws that secure the radio – StEp 7 & 8: The microphone is fitted as per any other new BMW up near the interior light. The light itself is held in with 2 X clips at the front which when released, will allow the complete assembly to be removed. wHat tHe BudGet Means tO yOu
M.E.N takes a look at June’s emergency budget and asks how will it affect mobile electronics businesses?
the result of the emergency budget was, as virtually everybody predicted, an increase in taxes. the country has a budget deficit that is expected to reach in excess of £160 billion this year, and while around half of that is estimated to be cyclical deficit (this ‘naturally’ occurs in a recession and as the economy recovers and grows this generally reverses itself) the other half is structural deficit. this is the part the government is keen to reduce, but principally, there are only two ways for a government to reduce structural deficit; cut spending and increase taxes. Cuts look set to reduce around £6 billion from the estimated £30 billion economists predict the government are aiming to save, so around £18 billion will be found from tax payers.
T
he result of all of this is that you need to be aware of some tax planning pointers to make sure you’re not paying over the odds. M.E.N consulted Shen Yap, a partner of Barnes roffe llp, a ‘top 50’ firm of chartered accountants, with particular expertise in tax. having joined the firm as a trainee in 1998, Shen qualified as a Chartered accountant in 2001. he has extensive experience in advising clients on maximising their returns, through business consultancy and tax-saving strategies, and made a number of suggestions. The first point to note is higher taxes are here to stay for a few years yet, but it’s worth noting too that Income tax rates (at up to 50%) are considerably higher than corporation tax rates (at up to 28%). So the question is, do you operate under a corporate veil and if not, despite whatever reasons you have for running your business like that, have you really taken into account another factor – taxes? As Shen says “the potential tax savings under a corporate structure become increasingly attractive due to the difference between personal tax rates and corporate tax rates”. With the possibility of gaining access to funds at 10% and the benefit of having limited liability protection, Shen adds that “it soon becomes clear that the compliance cost of running a company is paled in significance”. If however you’re still keen on keeping your existing business structure, he makes another suggestion.
36
www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
“Along the same principle as above, observe the disparity between the application of National Insurance to different types of income. Salary attracts National Insurance contributions. Dividends do not. It therefore follows that dividends are typically more efficient in an environment where NI rates are going only one way”. He adds, “remember also that every taxpayer has their own personal allowances and tax bands. If possible, it certainly makes sense to spread income around more than one taxpayer such that exposure to the higher rates of tax are minimized”.
The next point he makes is that you should consider the efficiency of your business or group structure. Questions you need to ask are things like; has the overall group tax profile been considered to establish if reliefs and claims are made to the benefit of the group as a whole? Are assets and business structured in the most appropriate company? Does the structure lend itself to the easy (and tax efficient) disposal of any part? All these questions really are things you may need to be asking of your company. The final points he makes involve something more personal and something with just pure common sense. The personal aspect relates to capital gains and estate planning, pointing out that with changes in capital gains tax rules and the stagnation in Inheritance Tax ‘tax free’ bands, you should be prepared to re-visit the tax profile of your investment assets. “Rates are likely to reach 40% for capital gains, so do consider housing your assets in a more tax benign vehicle like a company! It will only ever be taxed at corporate tax rates, which we have already established is much lower! Consider trusts for estate planning”, he added. The last point he makes is to just make sure you don’t fall foul of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). ‘Compliance is better than penalties” he points out, suggesting that HMRC will come down heavily on non-compliance in the current climate. “Understand the rules and implement controls to ensure that compliance is met, be it PAYE and NIC, VAT, corporation tax or income taxes”. Just how much of an effect the post emergency budget measures will have on your business is yet to be seen, but taxes are going to be higher and therefore post tax net income will be lower. For businesses to survive it’s likely that being tax conscious is more important than ever, with tax planning a real catchword.

industRy peRsOnaLity: Chris Bennett
M.E.N talks to Chris Bennett of Celsus, possibly the most enthusiastic man in the car audio market!
talking to Chris Bennett, Sales and Marketing Director of Celsus, for any length of time can be dangerous. If you haven’t bought something from him by the time the conversation is over then you’re likely to be so fired up to do the best you can for your business that this one conversation could change your life. with 16 years of experience in this market, Chris has become one of the most respected authorities on car audio and certainly one of
why did you get into this market?
which people have helped you along the way?
I’ve got a technical background as a trained aircraft engineer, in fact I was one the youngest line engineers to be working on Jumbos at Heathrow Terminal 4. I also used to run my own business in mobile engine tuning which is when I realised I had a talent for sales and add-ons. But really it’s because I love cars and I love music…and I get paid for working around both! We have a hectic schedule at Celsus but that is rewarded by dealing with people who are receptive, who love cars, music and driving. I think people forget what the industry is about
I truly do believe I’ve been surrounded by extremely talented people in this industry. The guys at JL Audio like Lucio Proni, Andy Oxenhorn and Steve Turrisi, Keith Peterson the ex-President of Phoenix Gold, Scott Whittaker from Dynamat, who also comes from an engineering background and isn’t your typical sales guy but who pioneered sound deadening. Working alongside Gordon Dutch for 15 years too and more recently Sergio of AAMP who is an incredible presenter and sales professional. Joe Geilink and Jacco of MTX and even people like Adam Rayner, his passion and excitement for our industry is incredible. But it’s also the dealers I’ve worked with. When I came into the market I knew nothing. I would go out to see dealers and ask them “how can I help your business, tell me all about your business”. I needed their help so I would ask if they would help me learn more so I could do a better job for them. They showed faith in me and I’ll never forget that.
You’re hot on training and seminars and helping people do better. Do you see many things that are wrong with the industry then? I regularly see things that could be better. I sometimes liken myself to Gordon Ramsey, and call them ‘Car Audio Nightmares!’. Not in an arrogant way, but I see all the things dealers are doing right but also a lot of what they’re getting wrong. Lack of training, attitude…sometimes it’s like all the fun has been sucked out of them. I have mates that sell paper, sure they finish at 5 everyday and go home early on Friday, but on the odd occasion I get time to play golf with them on a Sunday, during the end of the round they moan about going to work on a Monday. I can’t wait to get to work!
are you saying the fun factor is crucial for a successful dealer? If you don’t believe and have passion in what you’re doing then you won’t enjoy it. If you’re smiling and enthusiastic it will rub off on your customer…we’re an entertainment industry after all.
Could you sell something that isn’t as exciting as car audio? My early sales training came from photocopiers. Who would get excited about being sold those? I practised and practised doing a demo and in the end could put on a show and make it fun selling photocopiers. People would say “I’ve never seen anything like it!”. I was in the zone when I did that. Then to move to selling something like cars and music, and put me in a demo car, it’s my dream job. We’re lucky that these are exciting things we sell.
40
the most well-respected trainers in the art of selling. In fact, at the risk of using a cliché, if you could bottle up his enthusiasm, lust for car audio and sales technique you could make your millions from it. M.E.N caught up with Chris (who was driving at the time and couldn’t resist pointing out when the Stinger camera detector he was using saved him 3 points…always the sales man!) and found out more about his time in the industry.
www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
You weren’t afraid to ask for help? No, I’m like a sponge. Even today I learn from people all of the time, and it’s true, the more you learn the more you realise you don’t know. I’m thirsty for all the technical info on products so I can find the selling points. But confidence is the real key. I don’t have to use 10percent of my knowledge to sell a product if I’m confident and enthusiastic about it.
Does your enthusiasm help with the seminars you give? Most people don’t want to go to training and I’ve got them at the worst point of the day when they’ve all been at work. I need to entertain them and help make the important points stick. The key thing though is that my training has vital info but it’s down to dealers to act on it. They have to work hard and go out of their comfort zone. If you do something today the same as you did yesterday how can you expect a different outcome? I hope my enthusiasm rubs of on them, just as theirs would rub off on their customers. They don’t have to do everything I say, but I do have 10 commandments and I maintain that if they do just one of those really well it will help keep them in business for another year.
really? Yeah. It’s easy for people to say they’re uncomfortable with trying something new or that it didn’t work at the first hurdle. It’s about practice and confidence. Dealers see price as a barrier for example, but it’s just the customer not wanting to be ripped off. Once you’ve talked to them and they realise you’re a car audio speciailist and you’re giving them that great sound they heard in your demo car then price is irrelevant. And I can guarantee you they’ll thank me for spending their money! It isn’t about price, it’s about selling the dream. In fact I love price objections, it’s a buying sign, they wouldn’t mention it if they weren’t interested. It’s then important to take their attention away from the price! Focus on the real point, value for money through great advice and service.
Interesting stuff. what’s the future hold for Chris Bennett then? I had the opportunity to walk away from the industry last year, but there was no way I’d do that. Apart from anything I feel this industry has a massive future. As a part-owner of a business now, it’s a big shift for me, so I’m looking forward to the growth of our industry again and the success of Celsus. I’ll continue to learn from some great people like my business partner, Paul Baker who has taught me so much already about the day-to-day running of a business. His drive and passion to make Celsus and its customers a success is something to behold. I also look forward to honing my marketing skills by working with Mark Baker who’s a very talented lad.
any last words? As an industry I feel we’ve done a bad job of marketing ourselves, the expertise and talent in this industry is not highlighted enough. If I can play a small part in changing that I’ll be very happy. If we can all work together in changing that with the support of dealers, press like M.E.N, other manufacturers and distributors, who I have a lot of respect for then that can only be a good thing. After all, if the tide comes in then all boats rise. This is our industry, if you want to be part of it then please take care of it. If you’re not enthusiastic about it or don’t believe in it then go and sell something else, that’s all I ask.

aLteRnative Revenue stReaMs for car entertainment installers by peter reece, UK Managing Director, Bekaert Specialty Films
As in-car electronics installers look for ways to add profitable growth to their business, Solar Gard highlights an obvious solution to increase revenue. this summer, families will be spending a great deal of time in their cars travelling, with many choosing to holiday in the uK. they may ask about parking sensors for those tricky beachside spaces. they may want DVD players and screens fitted to keep the kids quiet. they will want hands-free phone sets installed to safely call relatives on the journey. But they will also be noticing how hot and uninviting their vehicles can get during these hot months of summer, and may be totally unaware of the risks that the sun poses to car passengers. this is where window film comes into the picture.
protection from uV rays one area coming under greater scrutiny – particularly with the predictions of a British heat wave this summer – is the risk faced by car passengers from excessive uV rays from the sun. Thousands of families, many with children, will spend many hot and unpleasant hours driving to and from popular holiday destinations, often stuck in heavy traffic, and most will not wear any form of sun protection, believing themselves to be protected from the sun while in their car. In fact, regular automotive glass does not block UV rays and solar heat, exposing passengers
types of window Film Determining film quality, as well as what is right for your customers is not an easy task, but a brief overview of what types of window films are available will go a long way in helping your understanding of the business. Generally, there have been two types of window films for many years; however, as technology progresses and customer’s requirements change, so to does window film. Non-reflective (Nr) or non-metallised window film is fairly straight-forward; these films contain no metal layer. This film works by reducing light transmission, through absorption, which reduces heat entering vehicle windows. Premium NR window films reject up to about 40% of the sun’s energy.
to almost the same sun risks as they face while on the beach. Less than five per cent of British vehicles have installed any form of window film to protect passengers from harmful UV rays and solar heat. Yet window film can be installed on any car and will block 99 per cent of all UVA and UVB light. It’s like applying a permanent, but invisible, 250SPF sun block to the car window. And thanks to its ability to block 50% of solar heat, car temperatures remain cool and controlled.
Metallised or high performance (hp) film is exactly that, a film that contains a metal. HP film is the most common type of automotive window film available. The advantages of using metallised film include superior heat rejection and durability. These films experience enhanced heat rejection through the use of the metal layer and achieve solar heat rejection of approximately 60%. Nanotechnology is the most recent advancement in automotive window film. These films achieve very high heat rejection (40%) in combination with maintaining an extremely high level of visible light (70%) transmission, which makes this film appealing to a wider audience that normally would not consider window film as a solution to the overheated interior of their vehicle.
In difficult economic times, customers are looking for the most cost-effective ways to stay cool and safe this summer. As a retrofit solution applied to the inside of existing glass, window film presents a perfect option. If you are already participating in the automotive sector by fitting the must-have gadgets that families are requesting, you are in a great position to leverage your current setup and customer base to diversify into window film, which can strategically complement your existing business.

M.E.N EXpo
All the information you need on the must-visit mobile electronics trade show of the year 2011 will once again see the mobile electronics world descend upon the M.E.N Expo, taking full advantage of the uK’s premiere trade-only industry event. the dates will span across the two days of tuesday, March 15th and wednesday, March 16th and will once more take place at the impressive ricoh arena in Coventry. this is a return to the midlands venue as back in 2007 the Expo was held there with great success. with masses of parking and an on-site hotel it’s a state-of-the-art venue that visitors will be able to explore for themselves in March. Like back then, the show is also reverting to a trade-only format, a decision taken as it was deemed crucial that the event focussed on the most important element – you, the dealer. Both of the days will cater purely for trade visitors with exhibitors gearing up specifically for this. As always, this presents a great opportunity for dealers to come along to one venue and meet up with a number of existing or new suppliers all under the same roof. Each year the major manufacturers and suppliers support the event and chose it as the venue for UK product launches, so it’s also a fantastic opportunity for dealers to get a first look at the mobile electronics they’ll be selling in 2011. Much of the time exhibitors also offer unique at-show deals too, which is reason enough to make the journey. This really is a unique event in the UK and one that continues to prove hugely popular with exhibitors and visitors alike. Not only does it create a convenient focal point for both sides of the mobile electronics industry to come together, but it provides valuable opportunities for new relationships and new information to be gathered. In the past suppliers have also run training workshops, which only add to the usefulness of the event to dealers. These are yet to be confirmed for 2011 but keep your eyes peeled on M.E.N on updates about this in future issues. Exhibitors certainly recognise the value of the event, some quotes from last year include; “This is the best show we’ve had, dealers flocked to the stand” (Connects2), and “It has been an incredible show for us, one of the best yet!” (Celsus). Quotes like that only reinforce the point, but without dealers/installers coming along then it couldn’t continue to be the success it is. The show is put on for you, to help your businesses to move forward, to re-energise relationships and keep you informed of the latest products. Even if you only visit it for half a day you’re bound to take something very positive away with you at the end, so make sure March 15th and 16th are marked in your diary.
arE You aN EXhIBItor If you’re a manufacturer or supplier and haven’t contacted M.E.N for your stand space, there’s still time. Many of the best show spaces have already been booked but there is still availability so call us now. A Show Presentation for 2011 will also be sent out to you soon, so keep a look out for it as it includes more details about booking. The Tuesday night will also host a party for exhibitors, which is always something worth partaking in. For more details on the show or to book you exhibition space, contact Lucy Poet at the M.E.N office. Contact: lucy poet, 01268 754897 or lucy@creativemedialtd.co.uk
