CHRISTMAS

CHEER CHEER,

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE NEW YEAR?

hopefully you’re all now in the throng of festive selling and seeing a hive of activity from customers either buying relatives mobile electronics gifts, or preparing for winter trips with new sat navs etc. After what have been some tough years, it would certainly be good to hear from dealers in the New year that they found Christmas 2010 to be a profitable one for them. whether this will be the case or not remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure, 2011 will prove to be another challenging year. With the VAT increases coming into effect in January and the continuing efforts of the Government to reduce the budget deficit, there’s likely to be the same amount of pressure on the mobile electronics specialist to get customers spending their hard-earned money with them. As always though M.E.N magazine will be on hand to offer the best advice possible in how to increase revenues, plus news and offers from supporters of the magazine who also aim to boost your businesses. The key to remember in 2011 is that what you’re selling is great

stuff, either thanks to the entertainment factor or due to the utility of the technology. There will always be a demand, and indeed a desire, for mobile electronics products so the aim should be to offer both affordable entry-level goods to get them started, but be able to demonstrate the added benefits of the more expensive products so they can see an upgrade path. Obviously it’s not just that which will keep you in profit, there are a whole host of things you can do or issues that you need to overcome. Fortunately, there are plenty of suppliers out there who understand your situation so make sure you take advantage of the seminars, deals and other help they may be willing to offer. We’ve done our part to try and help in this issue, by looking at the implications of the VAT increase and the things you’ll need to take into account, explored the idea of inspiring competition amongst your customers to increase profit and looked at all of the latest subwoofers from the major manufacturers. Hopefully you find these kinds of features useful, but if there are things you would like M.E.N to look at that could help your business then don’t hesitate to contact us. Likewise, with the M.E.N Expo 2011 now booked at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry we’d love to hear about any additional features at the show that you would find helpful. There are already some big companies booked into the event and it should prove to be the essential trade-only show for the mobile electronics market in the UK once again and another tool you can use to push

Merry your business forward.

EXTRA HELP FOR DEALERS AT M.E.N EXPO with this the last issue of M.E.N you’ll see before 2011, let’s have a look at one of the key events for 2011; the M.E.N Expo. There’s some exciting developments this year, so we asked M.E.N’s founder and publisher, Charlotte body, what the show had in store for dealers. So,what's new for the 2011 M.E.N Expo? This year we tried a new format with the consumer element, as that is what the industry wanted us to do. However, in 2011 we feel that we should stick to what we do best which is a trade-only event. what do you think the benefit of the event is to the industry? The M.E.N Expo is crucial for the industry, to support markets that don't have trade communication or have suffered decline, something we have seen with many industries over the last three years. This is why it is vital that the industry supports the event and that our readers understand the importance of attending.

what specific reasons are there why dealers should attend the show? I believe the reason they should come along is to see the new developments and products that our industry can offer. It has and will always be a great place for suppliers to catch up and for new business contacts to be developed. This is our ninth year, and to celebrate this we will be holding an " ICE Heroes" party. Let’s face it, anyone that is here now is here to stay and we want to show our appreciation by having a party to remember. There will be a free bar and curry with presentations from our exhibitors and then a show girl production. It is completely free to anyone who is in the trade. We guarantee that with the venue change to the Ricoh Arena and training seminars throughout the day it will be the must-visit event for the trade.

A REFRESHING CHANGE TO INTERIOR ODOURS Forget air fresheners or odour neutralizers, it would seem ozone machines are now one of the most effective and efficient ways to truly deodorise/ sanitise a vehicle interior. Bad smells are caused by bacteria and these bacteria cause smells and in some cases ill health, especially with air conditioning systems. The ozone generator changes O2 to O3, killing off the bacteria, which is the same technique is widely used in lots of industries…great for smokers, pet owners airconditioned vehicles etc. There is a big increase in the awareness and popularity of these items, with professional machines costing over £300. However, Smartwax are bringing in plug-in versions that work from the cigarette lighter, offering all the air purifying benefits (using negative ion technology) but for considerably less money. Smartwax will be starting their advertising and marketing campaign soon and have packaged products ready for display at great prices thanks to negotiating a fantastic discount from the manufacturer. For more information on how these work or for pricing (including size order/discount amount information) then contact Smartwax directly. Contact: Smartwax uK ltd, 01992 466481 or smartwax.net

PAMA PRONAV KEEPS ON TRUCKING The ProNav PNN220 sat nav system from Pama provides turn-by-turn navigation for drivers of any large vehicle. Designed with the HGV driver in mind, the ProNav PNN220 allows users to enter their vehicles’ vital statistics, including weight, height, length, width and the good they are carrying (normal, corrosive/explosive), the software then calculates a route to ensure drivers are not confronted with roads or obstacles not suitable for their vehicle or cargo. The new ProNav Dimension software provides timebased restriction data, giving vehicle specific routes avoiding the overnight or weekend HGV restrictions, as well as another truck navigation ‘market first’ which is its Dynamic ETA feature. Traditionally truck navigation systems have provided relatively inaccurate and unreliable journey times for delivery estimated times of

arrival. Using historic HGV traffic information sourced from real-time floating vehicle data, the PNN220 can analyse the day and time of travel and calculate an accurate ETA based on actual HGV traffic speeds at that time. In addition, the new ProNav PNN220 now comes with an FM transmitter for audible instructions via the user’s in-cab stereo system. By simply turning the device to a known frequency that is not broadcasting and then tuning the stereo to the same, drivers can receive turn-by-turn instructions that are easy to hear in even the noisiest environments. The ProNav PNN220 provides easy to read icons on the mapping too, so users can clearly see which obstacles they’re avoiding along the route. This could be the perfect product to promote to your commercial customers who may run fleets. Contact: pama, 0161 4944210 or pama.com

NEW AMPS AND SUB ENCLOSURES FROM JL AUDIO JL Audio has unveiled a new series of amplifiers, dubbed “JX”, and aimed at entry-level customers seeking high quality audio. The JX range will supersede the J2 range of amplifiers. To explain where JX fits within the JL line up; it is NOT a replacement for the J2 range but a product that exceeds the J2 line in performance and aesthetics, and, still meets the same price point for the consumer. JL Audio has recently introduced entry-level price point products, which carry signature performance and reliability of every JL Audio product. The JX amplifiers are the latest example of this (available as a 250W monoblock, 500W monoblock, 1000W monoblock, 360W 2-channel or 360W 4-channel) and pair extremely well with the WX range of sub woofer drivers and enclosures. The new WX Basswedge systems come in a single 10in, single 12in or dual 12in option and offer tighter and more accurate bass without taking up a lot of space. They’re built with the same DNA as the rest of the JL Audio subwoofer, which is dedicated to the proposition that real value can only exist when real performance is delivered. JL believe these sealed WX Basswedge systems can offer exactly that, which is good news considering these are JL’s least expensive subwoofers! ClARIoN Clarion boast two ranges of subwoofer, with their SRM3093HX 12in their high-end offering. This single voice coil sub utilizes a metalised mica injected polypropylene cone with a seamless parabolic cone structure for dynamic bass response. With a peak 1200W power and continuous power handling of 300W, it sounds as good as it looks. Their SW range meanwhile is a more affordable option with 10in and 12in versions available. These high power subs use a fiberglass/paper cone, dual Strontium Ferrite magnets and a single 4ohm heat resistant voice coil. Power wise, the 10in SW2512 has a peak of 600W and a 300W RMS, while the 12in SW3012 gives a 700W maximum and a 350W RMS. Contact: Clarion (gb) ltd., on 01793 870400, or clarion.co.uk

foCAl Focal’s best-selling subwoofer is the Polyglass V1, a sub that is fantastic for the money considering the performance and quality. The Polyglass cone gives an excellent weight/rigidity ratio for remarkable neutrality, the 65mm 4-layer coil boasts high power handling and a built-in voice coil cooling system gives optimal reliability. Being Focal, the Polyglass V1 subs are available in 11in (27V1), 13in (33V1) and 16in (40V1) sizes, all of which offer a nominal impedance of 4ohms. There’s also an entry-level to the Focal brand with the Access range. These subs come in 11in or 13in sizes and offer high power handling, dynamic bass, optimal reliability and a consistent performance, in fact, all the qualities you’d expect from Focal, but at a more beginner-level price range. fuSIoN The most powerful offering from FUSION is the 1300W 12in CP-SW120 (in the CP Series) although the sole Powerplant Series offering isn’t too far behind with 1200W peak power. The latter subwoofer is a dual voice coil item and benefits from the same Curv cone material as the rest of the speakers in that range, making a great choice for those who demand high performance. Interestingly the magnets are formed from high-grade strontium ferrite magnetic material, which helps to give the Powerplant sub an incredible sound. Back in the CP Series there’s also a 10in subwoofer available, while in the CS Series there’s a 1000W 12in woofer and a 800W 10in one too. The two subs in the CS Series, like the rest of the

Double bottom suspension spiders for total linearity under massive high power drive, cross woven tinsel leads to transfer power to the large diameter, four layer black aluminium voice coils and powerful heavy duty magnet structures make for an iron grip and melodic control of the bass line. Seamless lightweight polypropylene composite cones with bottom yoke supports provide controlled high power output. The speaker wires connect via Platinum plated spring terminals for perfect power transfer. The polished and chromed chassis with genuine rubber top gaskets look superb, making them suitable for inverted mounting for show use. Jl AuDIo JL Audio know a thing or two about subwoofers. Their W7 subs embody their commitment to pushing the envelope of speaker technology, with six patented technologies and a completely unique set of component parts they’re in a different league. Each of the W7 sizes, from 8in to 13.5in, have unique individual designs, meaning customers get the quality and punch they expect of JL no matter what the size. Then there are the W3v3 subwoofers that feature DMA-optimized, long linear excursion capability to minimize distortion and increase output. W3v3's are available in single 2ohm, 4ohm and 8ohm versions (6W3v3 available in 4 ohm and 8 ohm only) and are superb performers at medium power levels in compact sealed or ported enclosures, with attractive pricing to boot. JL Audio have also ensured they’ve met the demand for shallow mount subwoofers, with their 13.5in 13TWS sub. More patented technology and a large 7in diameter voice coil means it can handle very high power levels while also being designed for optimized performance in extremely small box volume applications. Essentially, that equates to ground-breaking performance in the tightest space, which should be music to dealers’ ears as stealthy or discreet installs are often called for. Now they can squeeze massive JL Audio performance into those small spaces, which can only be a good thing. Contact: Celsus sales team, 01020 664390 or celsusice.co.uk

JuICE Due to the success of the Juice amplified subwoofer enclosures (Juice A8 and A12) there was popular demand for the subwoofer to be available separately. With its 2in voice coil, 50oz magnet and 1000watts Max output the Juice JS12 is a great choice when it comes to upgrading a sound system on a budget. It’s also available in a 15in size too. pIoNEER The TS-SW2501S4 can boost car audio systems with 1200W of pure, solid bass without the user losing too much space in their car. Designed for enclosed use, the TS-SW2501S4 combines the interlaced basalt and carbon fibre reinforced IMPP (Injection-Moulded Polypropylene) double cone and Pioneer’s unique damper-less air suspension excursion control system. A typical sub uses a damper to control the woofer’s cone excursion. Their air suspension system creates a sealed air space between the double cones, effectively replacing the damper and providing superior compliance linearity - regardless of the volume input - for reproducing exceptionally clear, low distortion bass sound. Available in 2ohm or 4ohm variants, Pioneer now does a shallow 12in version, which also packs a big punch. Contact: pioneer, 01753 789789 or pioneer.co.uk

RoCKfoRD foSgATE With names like Punch and Power, customers can guess they’re in for a bass treat if for some reason they haven’t heard of Rockford Fosgate before. In the Punch series, as a reminder of their 12in offerings, they have; the P1S412 with 150W RMS and 300W max, the P2D212 with 250W RMS and 500W max and the P3D212 with 500W RMS and 1000W max. On the updated Power series though, Rockford has really upped the game. The T112D4 dual voice coil sub boasts power handling of 800W RMS and 1600W peak, the T212D2 sub handles 1000W RMS and 2000W peak while the 15in T2D215 dual 2ohm sub is built like a tank and can handle a huge 1200W RMS and 2400W peak. With a new spider design, revised cone and better cooling over the previous model it’s a heavy hitting competition sub that, like the other subs mentioned in the Power range, is available as a 2ohm version or 4ohm version. Orion’s XTR Pro is the big brother of their XTR, offering professional-level power handling without the high-end price tag. In fact it offers twice the power of the XTR and comes with either a 2ohm or 4ohm copper wound voice coil, a custom cast aluminium frame and custom terminals. In terms of size the XTR Pro is available as a 10in or 12in, both offering 500W RMS and 1000W peak power, but obviously with the 2ohm or 4ohm voice coil, meaning there are four different part numbers. Orion also hits the entry-level market hard with their Cobalt subwoofers. With a bumped back plate, extended pole piece, double stacked magnets and a high roll surround, a Cobalt sub is built to perform on a budget. Available as a 10in with 200W RMS (400W peak) or a 12in with 200W RMS (500W peak) they should satisfy that entrylevel customer after a big hit of bass. MAX powER

end oF an eRa?

Max power magazine’s last publication is set to be their February issue. Is this the end of an era, or the beginning of a new one? when companies involved with Max power magazine received an e-mail saying that bauer Media had decided to “suspend the monthly publication of Max power magazine and its accompanying website”, there’s likely to have been mixed reactions. Despite claiming that they intend to keep the brand alive with a series of “one shots” and “future new projects”, it doesn’t sound particularly promising. unless they have something up their sleeves, it’s likely to go the same way as brands like Top of the pops, or the magazine Arena or Smash hits, and become a forgotten about behemoth, neglected aside from the occasional look back through rose-tinted glasses. This is something of a personal subject for me, having devoted six years of my working life to Max Power magazine until late 2006, but is its “suspension” something to be more worried about rather than just saddened by? Does the apparent demise of such a big brand have ominous overtones for the aftermarket industry, an industry that many of you dealers are very much a part of? I’ll stick my neck on the line and say that we shouldn’t be too worried. Back in the heyday Max Power was consistently selling over 200,000 copies per month, however the ABC figure for 2009 showed an average net circulation of 20,589 copies per month. While there’s still profit to be made from those numbers in the hands of the right publisher (probably a smaller one), any business that sees sales drop by around 90 percent is going to be forced to re-assess things. There are a number of alleged reasons why Max Power in particular may have struggled though; a perceived arrogance with advertisers at the height of sales making those advertisers less inclined to support the magazine in tougher times, a loss of direction editorially where they made the cardinal sin of forgetting their target audience, a host of re-designs causing confusion and a weakening of the logo, poor decisions that jeopardised the integrity of the brand… the list goes on. And with Max Power floundering, their rivals from Future Publishing’s stable didn’t take any mercy either, Fast Car and Redline magazine carving out their own parts of the market (the younger style-orientated enthusiasts and the older speed fans respectively), to effectively leave Max Power in No Man’s Land. With a host of single marque magazines like Performance VW, Jap Performance, Fast Ford

26

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

etc doing well at attracting dedicated enthusiasts it’s a very different market place to the one Max Power was once king of…and the crown has fallen from its head because it perhaps didn’t evolve and adapt as well or as quickly as its rivals. But for all Max Power’s perceived failings, the one thing to realise is that all the aftermarket magazines (with official ABC circulation figures anyway) have dropped sales significantly over the last three or four years. The mistake though would be to link this with the health of the aftermarket industry, even though Max Power’s success in the early noughties was deemed to be representative of the rude health of the market back then. The key is that monthly magazines with high cover prices have to work hard now for their customers, and many of the younger ones are just saving their money and finding out the same information sooner and much cheaper online. It’s probably more that monthly magazines are in a weak position, rather than the aftermarket industry. In fact, general thinking in the media world is that the cheaper weekly/fortnightly magazines or luxurious monthly magazines aimed at the wellheeled are the only ones that have the potential to grow their sales figures, or at least sustain them. Demographically too, those of us who grew up on magazines are more likely to keep buying them, the youth market titles likely to have a rough ride as their readers grow up and aren’t replaced by the incoming internet generation. Max Power is likely to be one of the casualties of this too…and won’t be the last. Unfortunately ABC figures that are readily available were once a great way to get an estimate of the health of a particular enthusiast area. Nowadays it’s more difficult to get such definitive evidence aside

from internet hit statistics, but with so many relevant websites it’s still not an exact science. Look online at forums though, visit a show or two in 2011 and young guys modifying cars (and even older guys doing it too) is far from dead. They’re still out there, they just don’t all have the same focal point now, which on one hand makes things exciting through diversity, but on the other hand it can make it more difficult for companies to figure out where to advertise etc to reach the right potential customers. Magazines may well find themselves online anyway (you can even read this title online at our mobileelectronicsnews.eu website) and Max Power may be heading that way, aiming to get themselves on iPads across the world before their rivals. I suspect that the same lack of foresight that hindered them in the past may make this unlikely, but you never know. One thing’s for sure though; while my once held dream of editing Max Power magazine and keeping alive the spirit that made me and thousands of modifying fans across the world love it is gone for good now, the memories can’t be erased. The tuning and styling world may have lost “the definitive guide to arsing around in cars”, but they’ll find their own way to keep doing just that with the help of those magazines that are left, the internet and the continuing efforts of tuners, parts manufacturers/suppliers and dealers like yourself who make them remember why nothing in life is better than a modified car. And if you scoffed at that last line, then maybe you share the same lack of respect for tuning enthusiasts that stopped Max Power from being the continued success story is should have been, and maybe it’s time for you to look at other markets too.

Battle of the PNDs M.E.N puts the Garmin nüvi3790T up against the new TomTom Go Live 1000, but which one comes out on top?

With a good few miles behind each of the Garmin nüvi3790T and the TomTom Go Live 1000, it would only be fair to compare these high end automotive Portable Navigation Devices to find their strengths and weaknesses. As a dealer, you may not always get the chance to try these types of products out, only selling them on the basis of you knowledge of previous models and what the companies tell you about the new ones. So let M.E.N give you a real world estimation from the eyes of an average user. First impressions count and both units score well here. The Garmin comes with more in the box (USB lead, bracket/ charger, ear buds) while the TomTom is much more simple. With an unusual magnetic connection to hold the unit in the bracket, which is probably of take it or leave it usefulness, the one really cool thing is the power adaptor. The AC input goes into the cigarette lighter but the same USB lead that links TomTom to computer, also plugs into the back of the AC power adaptor, meaning you only have one wire to do both jobs. The TomTom’s suction mount is also quite neat, rather than clipping it off, it uses a twist mechanism that is surprisingly more user friendly. However, the trump card for the Garmin is its sleek iPodesque styling and slimline size, which you can’t help being attracted to. Regarding the hook-ups to their relevant websites, there was trouble with the TomTom one, put down to the fact that the Version Three software for these all-new units isn’t available until January due to the massive changes involved, so unfortunately we can’t report on that side of things. For Garmin though it was a simple set-up and download system, which took no time at all and had clear step-by-step instructions. Perfect for the technically illiterate. But it’s on the road where the abilities really matter. The Garmin initially gets the thumbs up here too as the large on-screen icons and fluid movement of the touchscreen are a real joy to use. Address inputs are easy (with full qwerty keyboard including numbers displayed) and the bright screen is great to look at in either portrait or landscape mode, depending which way up the unit is held. The TomTom’s screen is also touchscreen, but a little more awkward (more like a Blackberry compared to the iPhone-like Garmin offering), plus address inputs can be fiddly which can be frustrating. Additionally the Garmin has the voice activated voice command feature, where addresses can be input simply by speaking to it after the “secret” start-up word is said. It works well, although sometimes cabin noise can cause it not to, and while it

28

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

is a trick feature that impresses friends, in reality users may not find themselves employing that function much. The TomTom also has a voice command feature, which is selected manually instead, and works equally as well although requires more manual inputs so is perhaps even more of a gimmick and less useful. M.E.N’s side by side test was a 38 mile round trip from Rayleigh in Essex to Lakeside Shopping Centre at Thurrock. With no direct address, TomTom’s Google search came in useful, while the Garmin’s “spell name” option in Points of Interest came up trumps too. Unfortunately, the TomTom offered another Lakeside, which looked like the right one, but was actually in Basildon. As it had offered a shorter time to destination the TomTom was initially followed, thinking it may know some devious short-cut, but after sitting in some traffic (which it incidentally didn’t show on screen), the destination was checked and then revised via Google again for the right one. Essentially, that voided the test but the two units then both offered the same route, albeit with slightly differing calculations on how long the journey would take. As an aside, the Garmin’s screen would occasionally lose the map, perhaps as it was zooming out. The nice thing was though, the zoomed out view from Garmin helped to see the route ahead more clearly than the TomTom, which was useful for planning your lane in advance (although they both had small icons pointing out the distance and direction of the next turning). They also both had their own 3D junction views, which is an additional help, with nothing to really differentiate from each other save the Garmin’s higher quality image. Their spoken directions were also quite different, the TomTom giving much more information, most of which may not be needed, but certainly for the nervous user of sat navs it could be welcome. One other note was when in an average speed limit zone, the Garmin didn’t recognise it until later on, whereas the TomTom was spot on with its warning straight away.

Once at Lakeside, the home address was plugged in manually on both units, the TomTom going straight from the postcode, the Garmin using postcode and then asking for a house number. After an initial conflict between route directions (the Garmin opting for the one local knowledge would suggest taking), the two units followed exactly the same route. Interestingly there was a 3mins 48secs difference between the indicated journey times, the Garmin being the more optimistic. As it panned out, the TomTom was more accurate on this front, perhaps due to taking traffic en route into account, this accuracy being something of a key selling point for the TomTom. If anything, users are likely to reduce TomTom’s cautious estimated arrival times, which is good for those needing to be prompt for meetings etc. Overall, both units did the job asked of them extremely well and were easy to use (the initial wrong address choice on the TomTom probably being more down to user error), so dealers shouldn’t have any issues with recommending either of them. Outside of this test, the TomTom’s HD Traffic function had proven to be reasonably spot on, and the other Live services such as the Google search are a welcome and useful addition. Ultimately there is a choice though and it will come down to whether customers will want the accuracy and services of the TomTom to get to their destination, or prefer the clarity of screen and all round smarter looking user interface of the Garmin. In a perfect world, someone would put the functions of the TomTom into the sleek Garmin unit, which would probably create the ultimate Portable Navigation Device, but they haven’t yet, so it’s likely to be down to personal taste. They’ll both get customers where they need to go with ease and offer similar propositions, but while users may prefer using the Garmin, perhaps they may trust the TomTom a very small amount more. VAT INCREASE

HandlinG tHe Vat incRease How is your business going to handle January’s rise in VAT?

M.E.N looks at the things you may need to consider. The standard rate of VAT as you read this is 17.5 percent, but come January 4th 2011 that will be bumped up to 20 percent. In reality that new rate brings the uK in line with quite a few other European countries, but is cited as a way for the coalition government to help the country reduce the budget deficit. In fact, Chancellor george osborne has said this VAT increase will generate £13bn a year in extra revenues, which may well mean that crucial other areas may be protected from cuts. how this will pan out remains to be seen, but in the meantime retailers are going to have to figure out how they will deal with the increase. On the accountancy side of things there are a number of points that should be realised. For example, if you issue VAT invoices and were to provide goods or perform services before January 4th and issue a VAT invoice after that date, then you can still choose to account for VAT at 17.5 percent without informing HMRC. Similarly, on the retail side of things, you’ll be required to switch to the 20 percent rate after January 4th 2011 but there are some exceptions. For example, if your customer takes away a product from you before this date but pays for it on or after that date then you can still charge the lower 17.5 percent rate. For installers there’s also something else to consider, like working on a job that spans across the changeover date, in which case the lower rate is charged until January 3rd 2011 and the higher rate on the work carried out after that. you may be required to demonstrate to HMRC how you have fairly apportioned the work though, so it may be more of a nuisance than charging just the higher rate for the whole job. Other things that you’ll have to have in order are your pricing changes, which you now have a period of one month after the increase to get sorted. Apparently HMRC will be operating a “light touch” on errors relating to the VAT change with companies in the first VAT return after the change. However, you’ll have to make sure that all your pricing changes, from consumer-facing prices to those on internal systems, your website and back office books will need to change. Trading Standards may get involved, especially with the consumer facing prices, so you really need to make sure this happens. Naturally this may incur a cost on your part so make sure you’re prepared for that as it’s estimated to cost small businesses around £1500 to make the changes. With the administration out of the way then, the next thing to consider is how you’re going to deal with the VAT increases when it comes to your pricing. Are you going to absorb the VAT increase or pass it on to your customers? Absorbing the VAT increase can be a way to keep customers coming to you, but you’re not only potentially decreasing your margins you’re also putting-off the inevitable. The savvy retailers may well make a point of telling their customers that they’re not adding the VAT increase for a selected period of time (essentially a “money off” period), thereby creating the potential for attracting sales from competitors but without making a commitment to absorb the VAT permanently. It’s also worth talking to your suppliers beforehand as they may decide to absorb the increases themselves, which can have an impact on your plans and make it easier for you to keep attracting customers by not putting your prices up. Remember though that the VAT increase shouldn’t

30

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

hit too hard, if anything it’s the pain of having to pay more tax to the Government that will have people complaining. A £200 headunit for example with 17.5 percent VAT included would be £170.21 before VAT. That price with the new VAT rate added would result in a price of £204.25, so an increase of £4.25, which hopefully won’t make a massive difference (especially when you consider many of the things deemed as “essential” such as clothes and food have either a 0 percent or in some cases lower 5 percent VAT rate). It’s the things that are deemed as “luxuries” such as mobile electronics products that will be affected, so everyone will be in the same boat in this market. It’s worth noting too, that suppliers who are passing the VAT rate on may add this to invoices sent before January 4th if the goods are to be provided after that date, so make sure you aren’t caught out. Ultimately then you need to talk to your suppliers to find out whether they’ll be absorbing the VAT increases before you can make any plans. If they aren’t then it’s likely that you’ll have to pass the VAT increase on to your customers as margins on many of your products may already have been squeezed. However, there are opportunities to take the hit for a limited time in order to win customers. With a month to go before the VAT increase happens though the biggest opportunity is to promote the fact that many of your products will be cheaper if they buy now rather than wait until the New year. There’s a chance that customers will already be thinking this and will have moved purchases forward, so if you’re having a particularly busy patch of sales then remember why this was when budgeting for the same period next year. However you approach the VAT rise, the key is to get your house in order so that you don’t have problems with the switchover that can take your attention away from making money with your business. In the end most retailers may find they’ll have to pass the increase on to customers, which will hopefully mean a level playing field. There will always be those who continue to try to sell products with minimal profit to simply win the sale, but M.E.N will be here to continue helping dealers to make a decent profit from their businesses. In fact, it may mean that the trend of specialists coming into their own as customers realise paying a little more for a decent service is worthwhile, will be a trend that will continue to be relevant and that’s something we should all be promoting regardless of the VAT issue.

KnocKs Number 7:

Inspire Competition There’s an innate desire amongst human beings to compete, to be the best or to have the best. why else do people strive to own big houses or expensive cars, when what they need isn’t so grandiose? while this pursuit of success may be rooted in human nature (indeed, “survival of the fittest” is one theory about all species evolution) it’s also something that shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to your business. Competition, by its very nature can lead to success and marketing companies have used this promise of success to sell products for years. The anti-perspirant spray that suggests users will be a bigger hit with women than men who don’t use it, the hair conditioner that will have that woman admired by every man she shimmies past. All added up, the idea of competition and giving people the means to be better than others may seem superficial, but nonetheless it’s a powerful tool. But how does that correspond to your business? Well, on the audio side at least, it’s really quite applicable. With audio you have ways to measure success, either through the ears of professionals when it comes to the sound quality or through the numbers thrown up by a dB meter when it comes to SPL. The ability to use these tools to help customers realise where they may need to improve if they want to be the best, can therefore be a useful trick to learn. Especially with the younger crowd, and groups of friends in particular, this can in fact inspire competition. Get one car owner to upgrade their system to sound louder and clearer than their friends’ and you may find others coming in and using that system as the benchmark they need to beat. you can take this further by actually holding open days for your customers with SQ judges and

32

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

a dB meter on hand to help establish how successful their installs are. Or if you’re really dedicated then you can go even further still and encourage your customers to compete in national competitions. M.E.N has visited companies that have done this before and while it can mean dealers spending a lot of time in the organisation (and a bit of money if they want to produce “team” shirts or even attend the events themselves), but it can all pay dividends. Not only does the shop’s name get seen across a national spectrum, which can have a positive effect on sales, those who compete under the shop’s name will undoubtedly be pushing on with their installs to do even better…and use your shop as the means to do it, thereby giving you more trade and possible install work.

There’s an innate desire amongst human beings to compete, to be the best or to have the best.

It doesn’t have to be all about the younger crowd though. The same approach of offering “something better than others” can be a beneficial tactic with all customers. Take for example an executive bringing their modern Audi to you for a speaker upgrade… why stop there? you know full well that they could improve their standard audio beyond that and make it sound even better than his Managing Director’s Aston Martin. “Better than the MD’s car?”. Surely that kind of promise could get the ambitious and competitive side out in most customers and convince them that it could be another step to success. Similarly, selling anything at the higher end whether head units or navigation systems can give people that satisfaction of achievement, of a kind of social status gained. Like designer labels on clothes or huge home audio set-ups that impress visiting friends, having a car audio install or bit of technology that impresses passengers is another of those areas where people can demonstrate their success and feel better about themselves.

This may all sound like some weird psychology lesson, but you only have to take a look at yourself and see how some of your decisions have been made to see how it works. your last car for example, your decision may have been based on the speed (is it quicker than your mates’), the badge (does the BMW badge symbolise something about success that a Daihatsu badge can’t) or at the very least was it “the best” you could afford that met the criteria you needed. you may have even got a great deal on it, but then again this can be part of your competitive streak coming out, so you can tell people how good a deal you actually got. Very few people like to admit that their decisions are based on anything other than a basic need, but the truth of the matter is that consumers buy products, both essential items and luxury items, based on a number of elements. But one of the most powerful is what that item says about them and how successful they are in life… how many women make a point of having Molton Brown hand soap on view, but would keep the Tesco’s own brand one tucked in a cupboard. To capitalise on this sense of competition, of needing to be seen as successful is not exploitative, it’s a simple realisation of one of the strong factors that drives consumer purchases. If you can do things with your business that can help promote competition and pinpoint ways to having an install or mobile electronics product that will be “better than others” then you may have found a key to unlock your customers’ potential.

Ken and Colin (and Colin’s son, Mike) didn’t stop there though, with Colin and Mike in particular being instrumental in starting Car Audio Direct from what was essentially a broom cupboard at the back of the shop. Mike also started the Talk Audio website, so they clearly saw the potential of the internet early on. Subsequently Car Audio Direct outgrew the premises and moved to somewhere larger leaving Marston Autoparts/Oxford Car Audio in the original building. Then in April 2009 Ken and Colin decided to split the business, with Colin and Mike taking over C.A.D and Ken keeping hold of the shop side of things. Nowadays he’s still the boss but leaves the day-to-day running to Steve Bryan and Marc Stansfield. It says something about the company too that Steve (who was incidentally crowned “King of Sting” on the Celsus CSI Miami trip for outstanding support to Stinger products and attachment sales) has been there for 10 years and Marc has been with them for a whopping 26 years. Assistant Manager Mark Watson has also put in six years with them to date, while Tony Chan their main installer has been fitting products with them for 20 years now. Unusually they also have Steve Lemasurier on hand with his Lem-Tech company, who works closely alongside. Steve (or Lem as he’s known) has worked for them for probably seven years on and off but with his own business now he still does a lot of fabrication work for them and is treated as part of the team. There’s a great vibe amongst them, the ideal balance of knowledge, enthusiasm and approachability that keeps the customers coming back to them time and again…but they’re not resting on their laurels. They say they’ve done their moaning about the downturn in the industry and are now concentrating on ways to keep attracting new customers and making the most of what’s out there, which is refreshing to hear.

On the day M.E.N visited, their latest Beetle demo vehicle was on hand outside and that’s just one element of their plan. This classic Beetle has been in progress for a while and is nearing completion with just some door builds left to go. Using JL Audio product it’s a 150dB build using the J2 entry-level equipment and it looks and sounds incredible. They’ve already taken it to a number of shows and local meets (along with the Alpine Passat CC that Lem-Tech built at OCA with a little help from the guys), with the aim of getting customers and potential customers excited about audio. They’re even running a competition with the Beetle at local colleges, where they’re asking for graffiti artists to come up with a paint job for it, the best one winning a stack of JL Audio equipment and seeing their design come to life. This is all part of their plan to bring the excitement back and they’re already seeing results, with a recent Saturday having a volume of customers and gathering of enthusiasts and their cars outside the shop which they hadn’t seen since the halcyon days of car audio.

There’s quite a unique and varied history to oxford Car Audio, one which some of you may already be familiar with. As a company it has experienced a quite incredible evolution and with their 25th year in the car audio market looming they look set to keep on pushing forward. The original business actually started longer ago than that though, back in September 1979 as Marston Autoparts. As the name suggests the company was more into selling the oils, nuts, bolts and filters that your average car enthusiast/mechanic might need. Set-up on Cherwell Drive in Marston, oxford, the shop continued along these lines until 1986 when oxford Car Audio was born. The two companies ran alongside each other in the same building under the ownership of Ken howard and Colin organ. In those early days there was even a separate travel agents taking up half of what is now the front section of the shop, although today that’s long gone.

On top of this they’re doing all they can to promote their specialist knowledge and abilities to inspire confidence, not just with customers but also with local dealers. They even recognise that many old customers who have grown up may not realise that the modern cars they’re driving now can also be played with, so that’s another area they’re trying to hit. The shop has changed a lot over the years, with a welcoming audio area (including TV and seats for waiting customers) plus the autoparts and alloy wheels towards the front of the store. What hasn’t changed though is their dedication to doing a great job and helping customers receive the best advice and the expertise they need to realise their car audio ambitions. With no real competition locally and a prime spot on a parade of shops near the hospital and a host of colleges the company has evolved in many ways (they also supply and fit the likes of parking sensors, tracking devices and phone kits). However, in other ways Oxford Car Audio now finds itself in a totally new position as they take on the challenges of the modern market with the recent changes behind the scenes. Fortunately though, the long-established business and customer-facing team are still there, with the same superb ethos of customer service backing them up. While other companies have come and gone, the enthusiasm, knowledge and abilities of the staff at Oxford Car Audio should see them reach another 25 successful years as a car audio retailer. As a company they’ve had a big impact on the whole of the car audio market over the years and if they keep going the way they are and making the store somewhere customers actually want to go and spend money, then Oxford Car Audio will be one to look out for in the future too.

Cu

oxFoRd caR audio

The car audio shop with an intriguing past… and an exciting future ahead.

Verdict: A good sized, clean Vw Camper mug with no chips, a little light on the milk but regular offerings for another and tasty nonetheless.

Remote Possibilities

Are you letting customers know the benefits of Remote Start systems? If not, Clifford believes you’re missing an opportunity

It’s a timely reminder from Armour Auto’s Clifford brand that there are great opportunities to be had from Remote Start systems, and with winter upon us it’s the perfect time for dealers to pitch these opportunities to their customers. but what exactly are Remote Start systems and why would your customers need one in their automotive lives, especially in the colder months? Essentially a Remote Start is a system that installs alongside a vehicle’s existing security (whether OEM or aftermarket) and allows the owner to start their engine remotely from up to 2,000 feet away. The benefits are obvious; it allows the customer to securely and remotely start their car on cold mornings without going outside, meaning the windows should be defrosted and the interior toasty by the time they leave the house. This also allows a safer journey to work as well as a more comfortable one. Similarly this can be employed in summer too as cars can be started with the air con cooling the interior before the driver needs to get in, resulting in a hopefully sweat-free and stress-free journey. There are other benefits too though. For example a Remote Start system allows the vehicle to remain running while the doors are locked, so potentially useful (and economical) for multi-drop delivery drivers as it saves wear and tear on starter motors and doesn’t use the extra fuel needed to re-start the vehicle. In the unlikely event that someone should break in, then the engine will cut out the moment an attempt is made to drive the vehicle without the ignition key. Kits can be fitted legally to both manual and automatic cars, although installers should be trained by Clifford to ensure

36

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

they can do this to the required standard. Remote Start systems are also useful for those with a car that isn’t being used for a longer period of time as it can automatically start a vehicle if the battery voltage level (Intellistart 4 only) drops beyond a certain point. Again, this is particularly useful in winter when the cold temperatures can have a detrimental effect on batteries. Installers can also program the systems to remotely operate other functions such as turning on headlights and stereo or opening windows, petrol cap or boot allowing for some great time-saving or the potential to be creative with show cars. Armour Auto offers four different Remote Start systems: Clifford 1.3X, Clifford 1.2, Clifford Responder One and the Clifford Intellistart 4 which is an add-on to Clifford G4 and G5 alarms. The 1.3X, 1.2 and Responder One ship with different key fob options which match the customer’s demands, meaning they can use them for functions like engine remote start, keyless unlocking while running, rear window defrost, car finder and boot release. Installation-wise, Armour Auto point out that these solutions use unique interfacing technology to enable high levels of integration with almost all makes and models of vehicle currently available on the market. Clifford training can make sure that installers know exactly what they’re doing too in order to fit the systems and use all of the functions perfectly.

Remote Start systems have come on a long way over the last few years and are no longer a gimmick, but a real and safe additional aid to drivers. With the added security of doors being kept locked while the engine is running and the fact they’re legal to fit and won’t work if a car is in gear, dealers can supply and fit them with confidence. And while they may be a great add-on to an alarm/immobiliser sale they shouldn’t be seen as just this. A Remote Start system will work with OEM security (with Xpresskit interfaces on hand to help with integration) so have enough merits on their own to be sold individually. For more information on the Clifford range of Remote Start systems from Armour Auto, to find out about installer training or to learn more about Remote Start systems and how to sell the benefits, then contact Armour Auto. They offer full technical support and back-up, plus with the Clifford brand you know you can sell with confidence in the quality. Contact: Armour Auto, 0800 7839125 or armourauto.com

INDuSTRy pERSoNAlITy

industRy PeRsonality:

lee FeRGus RGus M.E.N finds out more about Autosound’s Bradford-based Sales Director Married with one daughter and another child on their way in early 2011, 35-year old Lee Fergus has come a long way in his 19-year working career. Interestingly though, all of his career from the moment he left school has been spent with Autosound. Back in 1991, Lee took a job there that saw him involved with stock control and order picking at their central warehouse. The successful Bradford company had a chain of car audio shops throughout the North of England then, which this warehouse kept well stocked. However, after the booming early nineties these shops were sold off, the last one going in 1996. That left Autosound with a dedicated bus and coach audio/visual business working directly with Blaupunkt as sole distributor for their range of

professional products and a car audio repair department servicing the needs of Toyota, Honda and Mazda in the UK. Lee’s position changed throughout the late nineties and early noughties into more of a servicing role, looking after the reporting and systems side of the business for their contracts with Matsushita, FujitsuTen, Phillips and Sony and the audio units supplied to the OEMs. After this a promotion into a sales administrator role within the bus and coach division saw Lee attending numerous major exhibitions and building relationships with the company’s major bus and

So, 19 years in the industry, how have you seen the market change over the years?

As far as marketing goes, is there one message you try and get out to people about Autosound?

Since I started with Autosound, when it had its own shops, they would not only sell just audio systems but electric windows, central locking, sunroofs and things that are now pretty much standard throughout most cars. Looking at shops now and they’re stocking very different products like reverse sensors, alloy wheels, handsfree mobile phones kits and numerous other products that weren’t on the radar then.

The main message I would like to get across to the Trade is that Blaupunkt is not dead, despite all the malicious rumours and they can contact me at any point about this or alternatively watch out for product updates in M.E.N over the coming months. Autosound can also repair or service any OEM car audio unit from Blaupunkt or Bosch and our own service department looks after any repairs to audio and sat nav units from Matsushita, Fujitsu-Ten, Denso and Aisin AW, most of which are installed in Toyota, Honda or Mazda cars.

fast-forwarding to the job you do now then, what are the best and worst things about working in this market? The best thing about the market is that it is full of characters and I have made many personal friends throughout my involvement, not only in car audio but also through the bus and coach business. However, with Autosound starting the business of distribution last year and a return to its’ roots of car audio I’m now meeting with lots of interesting characters and everyday is a new challenge. I suppose the worst thing is not being able to fit in enough appointments, as the UK motorway network can be hard work!

what does the future hold for you and Autosound?

what does a typical day consist of for you, are you out on the road a lot?

I am a keen Pool player and we have just celebrated taking our local pub team back into division one of the local district league.

Working in a company like Autosound means that we all work together as a team to get the job done. Although sales is my main role I am still actively involved in stock control and purchase of the products, not to mention the marketing of new products. The last 18 months have been particularly busy on that front with us taking on sole UK distribution of products from Blaupunkt Car Audio, Funkwerk handsfree mobile phone car kits, Tetrax mobile phones mounts and Funtoro media-on-demand systems.

38

coach clients, which led to subsequent promotions throughout the noughties until he reached his current position. So ask him what his proudest professional achievement has been, and he quite rightly says; “Working my way through the system at Autosound from the warehouse to Sales Director and part owner”. But what else has he got to say about the company, his job and the market in general? M.E.N found out;

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

To continue expanding through distribution with our suppliers Blaupunkt, Funkwerk, Tetrax and Funtoro with some exciting new products due for 2011 and to maintain growth in our core business of audio/video distribution with key supplier Bosch to the bus and coach business.

That sounds like you’ll be busy. what do you do when you’re not working?

well done. And finally, is there one piece of advice you’ve been given that has served you well? Put in the ground work and you’ll reap the rewards! Contact: Autosound, 01274 688990, autosound.co.uk or lee.fergus@ autosound.co.uk

he future can be a daunting place, filled with uncertainty and the potential to be a dark and profitless place. Then again, you can take a more positive approach and look forward to embracing the challenges that 2011 will bring, hopeful that the economic gloom surrounding the nation will start to lift. Speaking of which, it’s worth being mindful of the economic climate and listen to or read as much from the economists as you can. There tends to be two schools of thought; one suggesting the worst is over and the green shoots of recovery have appeared, the other pointing to the pain that is yet to come from VAT increases and job losses, that are yet to reach their height. Either way, the one thing businesses can’t really afford is to sit back and do nothing. Especially dealers, dealers need to keep selling their products and installation services no matter what the state of the economy otherwise they’ll be closing down. On the plus side, there are always customers out there and there is always the desire for the mobile electronics that dealers in this market offer, it’s just a case of finding out how to reach them and giving them what they can afford or are willing to pay.

With 2011 just around the corner, what products are likely to be the hot property of the mobile electronics market, and how will dealers fare? M.E.N ponders these questions

There will no doubt be a continued push by audio manufacturers of their entrylevel products, which can only be a good thing. type of product is. And they’re not the only ones to be pushing their entry-level products. Most of the major manufacturers are now offering low cost head units with iPod compatibility while even the likes of Celsus have taken on brands that offer exceptional value for money (the new JL Audio JX range of amplifiers another product aimed at those wanting to spend a little less).

Aside from price, the other thing likely to be on the AgendA for the Audio world in 2011 is size. We’ve already seen a plethora of powerful but diminutive digital amplifiers and the trend isn’t going to stop there. Shallow mounting active sub enclosures with small but powerful woofers are likely to continue being popular as they offer the performance customers want without taking up huge amounts of room. They’re often good value too, but the key thing for dealers is their versatility, with under seat placement possible for MPVs and the like, or discreet installation possible in sports cars etc. These kinds of solutions will surely continue to be popular in 2011 as will any shrunken

like electric window kits aren’t really on the radar now as most new cars come with them, so there’s a need to constantly check your offerings and decide whether they’re relatively obsolete now. Hopefully there’s a long way to go yet with things like iPod integration, but it’s these types of area that dealers may want to keep an eye on throughout 2011 as more and more new cars have that functionality. that this will be the way forward in the future. M.E.N will be keeping tabs on developments every month to try and help dealers decide what to do about DAB. It’s going to be a crucial subject for the industry next year and the years that follow, because it could be the great hope for car audio (akin to iPod integration)…or it could prove to be a waste of time. will be certain areas that they will need to push in, or, in the case of DAB, keep a close eye on. There’s unlikely to be any major shifts in the products they’re selling or installing over the next 12 months, it’s bound to be the same mix of sat nav, iPod integration, parking sensors, security and entry-level car audio. Another fact is that of emulating her loyalty to employers. My mum was medical editor of woman’s own for 30 years and while the average freelancer lifespan on any given specialist title is widely regarded as three years, I was four years on Max power (before Emma bradshaw ‘new broomed’ me out for being ‘too technical’) and seven years on Max power as their In Car Electronics Editor.
