EDSPEAK This month it’s a big thank you from me for making my life so hectic and interesting as editor of MEN. I’m not leaving the mag and not even being kicked upstairs – my new role is to make sure that MEN’s leading-edge technical information is not only maintained, but increased. As many of you know, I have an engineering background and have always been ‘hands on’ (my case comes up next week!), and I will be putting this to good use in the magazine. It’s time to introduce the new man who will be heading up the editor’s tiller – Chris Anderson (chris@ chrisandersonmedia.com). Many of you will know him from the days of editing Total Car Audio magazine and generally being deeply involved in mobile electronics. Chris has for many years been producing consumer electronics magazines in Dubai but has decided to come back to rainy old Britain to pursue his journalistic career here. Promoting digital I was talking to Digital Radio UK’s Sam Bonham recently and he tells me that he is looking closely at how to promote independent aftermarket in-vehicle retailers on www. getdigitalradio.com. Currently he is seeking as much as input as possible and welcome your comments. You can email Sam at sam.bonham@digitalradiouk.com to put yourself on the map.

ALL CHANGE AT MEN
Big new changes at Creative Media sees the introduction of a new ICE Awards date and venue – November 7 (not the 16th as previously mentioned last month!) at The Grand Connaught Rooms in London’s Covent Garden There are big changes to the MEN magazine format and editorial with Editor Martyn Williams moving to a new role within the magazine concentrating on increasing the technical content, and new man steering the ship will be long-time mobile electronics specialist journalist Chris Anderson. We are also delighted to announce Scorpion as silver sponsor at the ICE Awards and the hospitality sponsor at MEN EXPO 2013. The magazine will be evolving over the next two months with a new look, new install guide, a new Q&A problem solving page, a manufacturer product tech talk, a new format for business guidance and new regular columns from Andy Mills and Martyn Williams. Other detail changes include regular industry diary dates along with industry and dealer news plus other new features such as interaction with Facebook and mystery shopping.Charlotte Body Publisher MEN. “I am delighted with the new line up at MEN and look forward to watching the magazine evolve over the coming months. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our advertisers and readers for the continued support. I look forward to the seeing you ALL at the ICE awards in November”
COBRA UK Launches Speed Limiter Awareness Campaign Cobra UK, a leader in vehicle safety and security solutions, launched a new campaign to highlight the benefits of speed limiters at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show with a special offer price on its speed limiter. The safety and security provider launched its campaign in a bid to help fleet operators improve road safety, reduce running costs and help them meet Duty of Care obligations. A recent independent test by Fleet Van magazine using a Volkswagen Transporter Sportline fitted with a Cobra speed limiter set at 56 mph achieved a 37% reduction in fuel use; a figure that would dramatically reduce running costs over a typical three or four year period, as well as reducing emissions and extending engine life. Protecting a driver when they are using a vehicle on company business is paramount to any modern day company’s Health and Safety and Duty of Care strategy, and a speed limiter goes some way to helping reduce a driver’s speed and thus their chances of being involved in an accident. The speed limiter, which is Euro 5 and Euro 4 engine compatible for both petrol and diesel vehicles, comes with Plug and Play installation and a two year parts warranty. The product is also OEM approved. Cobra UK 01932 772400 www.cobravehiclesecurity.co.uk
SmarTrack Dealer’s Fund Raising Tour SmarTrack dealer Jon Jammin from DK Vehicle Media has just completed a 9-day 4000-mile motorcycle tour of Europe to raise funds for children’s Cancer charities. Jon and co-rider Darren funded the trip themselves so that every penny raised can go directly to the charities. The trip was inspired by Darren’s niece Danii who; despite fighting her own tough battle with the disease has still found the resolve to start her own fund-raising site for other sufferers and their carers. Sponsors were able to track the journey courtesy of a SmarTrack tracking system fitted to Jon’s bike. DRIVE TO DIGITAL
DIGITAL SIGNAL STRENGTH BOOST
A big switch-on to boosted signals in London was recently performed by Dame Kelly Holmes and Radio 5 Live’s Colin Murray. The event was hosted by Digital Radio UK, supported by Arqiva and BT Wholesale, held an event at the top of the BT Tower. This marked the switching on of new digital radio transmitters at the top of the BT Tower and three other recent transmitter-builds around London. This adds nearly one million people into DAB coverage for the first time and improves coverage for over nine million Londoners within the M25 zone. At the event Tim Davie (Director of Audio and Music, BBC), mentioned the high proportion of listening hours to digital radio in London (35%) compared to the rest of the UK (29.1%). The Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey, also commented, saying: “The London Boost will ensure the maximum number of Londoners and visitors to London will have access to the BBC’s coverage of the Olympic Games and the wide range of excellent commercial radio services available in London.” The BBC Radio 5 Live Olympics Extra station, will be broadcasted exclusively on digital for its duration. The London Boost also coincided with a strong retail partnership driving footfall in London’s independent stores and receiving considerable press (What Car?, Metro and the Evening Standard), as well as a full page ad in the Guardian London edition. London is first to receive the boost and over the course of the next few years this will be repeated in other cities including Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool and Wolverhampton. The Minister also announced that in March 2012, 23% of new cars now had digital radio fitted as standard, up from 10.7% the previous March (CAP/ SMMT, Q1 2012). Another key digital radio event was the recent launch of the Digital Radio In-vehicle Receiver Technical Trial. This trial tests the implementation of service-following (the switching between radio services as a vehicle moves in and out of coverage) and traffic announcements (transferring listeners from one station to another in order to hear traffic alerts). This project will run until 15 June 2012 and aims to provide manufacturers and vehicle manufacturers with a trial route to test the implementation of these two facilities, both of which are included within the UK’s minimum specification. This minimum specification will sit behind the proposed Digital Radio Switchover Certification Mark and provide consumers assurance in digital radio products and services. This trial is open to all electronics and vehicle manufacturers. Anyone interested in taking part should contact sam.bonham@digitalradiouk.com. Digital Radio UK is also looking closely at how to promote independent aftermarket in-vehicle retailers on www.getdigitalradio.com. We must ensure fairness and provide consumers with a good experience. Currently we are looking for as much as input as possible and welcome your comments. Please email sam.bonham@digitalradiouk.com with your suggestions.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SHOW 2012 Any installer looking for extra truck, bus and van business will find this show worth a visit. Highlights this year included lots of variations on a tracking theme plus some sophisticated camera equipment. Martyn Williams reports It all happened at the NEC on April 24-26, a big show covering several halls with all the major vehicle manufacturers in attendance for anyone interested in a new van, and included the launch of a new Transit range. Although large, the show was noticeably bigger before the economic downturn and

BECOME A MEMBER A member of what? This month Martyn Williams looks at three organisations that, if you make the cut, might be interesting and in many ways profitable to join Here, presented in alphabetical order, are three major organisations that installers can, with the right preparation, become qualified. Each offers some special advantages and have a mix of features which need to be checked to suit individual requirements. There’s a lot of information, so here goes..
FITAS The Federation of Communication Services Installer Training and Accreditation Scheme is a membership scheme for the professional installer of communications equipment into vehicles. The scheme is operated by FCS and is closely based on the UK code of practice, FCS 1362, which is generally recognised as the national bench mark for best practice in installation. Membership of FITAS thus enables installer members to align themselves to what is effectively the national standard for installation. The scheme is focused on the accreditation of individual installers rather than companies and in this way enables all installers, whether freelance or employed by contractors of any size to compete on a level playing field by demonstrating skills and competence against the same standards. For this reason, FITAS is achieving growing recognition; by manufacturers of communications and tracking equipment, within the critical blue light sector and in the context, for example, of the forthcoming digital switchover. The scheme provides access to a programme of purpose designed training and continuous improvement which is aligned with the motor industry standard of re-test or improvement on a 3 year cycle. Initial accreditation is dependent on completion of the mandatory core training modules and passing the associated exams. Thereafter, installers will be audited from time to time and continuing accreditation is dependent on passing these audits. Specialist training is being developed to enable installers with the relevant skills and experience to gain additional accreditation to such specialist areas as Road tankers (the “Pet Regs”) and Blue Light. The scheme also offers a number of other benefits to members with special member deals and discounts on equipment and services including Chameleon, Co-Star, Doodson Insurance Brokers, Nemesis, Vauxhall and Volkswagen. Other benefits include dedicated installer events, technical support and advice, promotion via the FITAS/FCS website and lobbying by FCS to protect the interests of the installation community. To join the scheme the installer must meet the prescribed entry criteria which includes minimum requirements on experience and insurance cover. A monthly fee of £20 per installer (payable by direct debit) includes the cost of training provision, examination fees and auditing and the day to day

support provided by FCS. For more information, installers can email fitas@fcs.org.uk +44 (0) 20 8249 6361
MESF The Mobile Electronics & Security Federation represents the industry at Government level and gives qualifying industry professionals a sense of identity, values and beliefs, the benefit of being united in a network that is their professional identity and national brand. MESF membership has various grades starting with a registered business (company, sole-trader or self-employed) who can be a Corporate Member if they supply products to the trade or an Approved Installation Specialist Network Member if they install products or an Approved Branch Installation Specialist Network Member if a branch outlet of an Approved member. Alternatively, a sole-trader or self-employed individual can be an Affiliate Member and/or an Accredited Technician if they install products. Additionally, an employed individual can also be an Accredited Technician if they install products. All these membership grades recognise and value dedication to professionalism through commitment to rules, the gaining of experience and skills plus the acquisition of knowledge by continuous professional development. There are membership fees for these grades but the grades are achieved and maintained. Business owners have a legal duty of care to their employees which obligates them to be responsible for safety. Using accredited and qualified technicians is an important part of that duty of care when buying-in safety critical services. MESF accreditation combines industry qualifications and courses with experience to give confidence to product suppliers, vehicle owners, insurers and others that they will be getting a safe and efficient installation. To achieve MESF Accredited Technician status an installation technician needs to pass the Certificate 1 Basic Installation examination or an equivalent or higher qualification. Show two years continuous industry employment. Have attended at least two relevant courses/seminars or have evidence of equivalent continuous professional development. To maintain MESF Accredited Technician status an installation technician needs to have a Certificate 1 Basic Installation or equivalent qualification which is no more than three years old or have evidence of continuous professional development. MESF professional identity is a national brand and members have access to a variety of benefits and features that improve their business or employment opportunities. The list is too long to include full details of all the benefits but they include Trade Association Member-
ship recognised by discerning customers, private and business. There is also a distinctive ‘tick’ logo for display on premises, vehicles, paperwork or wherever a member needs to display its credentials. ‘MESF news’ emailed to members weekly. Installation / warranty certificates which are accepted by insurers and a VOSA requirement for security installs. Can be used for any installation. Only £18 for a pad of 50. Other features include web site listing, money saving business insurances from a leading broker, reduced credit card transaction charges, landline phone number on a mobile, discounted medical insurances, vehicle breakdown cover, access to legal advice, vehicle purchase, leasing/daily hire and a call answering service. Annual fees range from Corporate member at £500, Approved Installation Specialist Network member £300, Approved Branch Installation Specialist Network member - if a branch outlet of an Approved member – an additional £75. An Affiliate membership is £100 per year. For more information, installers can email admin@mesf.org.uk
Thatcham Recognised Installer Following the demise of the Vehicle Systems Installation Board (VSIB) in 2009, Thatcham took over the role of safeguarding and maintaining the standard of installation of Thatcham listed aftermarket systems. Working with the Vehicle Aftermarket suppliers and Installers Thatcham developed a swift, efficient and cost effective online service for the recognition of Vehicle Aftermarket Installation companies and their employees – Thatcham Recognised Installer (TRI). Thatcham is a a not-for-profit organisation and relies on levy payments from its 30-plus member insurance companies. Unlike the insurance companies, installers who enrol in the TRI scheme do not become members. The purpose of TRI is to provide the following: A database of Thatcham Recognised Installers. Assist the UK insurance industry. Safeguard and maintain the standard of installation of aftermarket systems. Certification of installations. Provide the motoring public with a quick and easy guide to competent Security Aftermarket suppliers and Installers in their locality. For an installer to qualify for Thatcham Recognition, the following is required: Registered company or Sole Trader. Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check required (for Category 5 purposes only). Provide proof of Public Liability Insurance. Product supplier recommendation. Provide proof of relevant product training. Comply with the requirements of the Thatcham TRI criteria. The potential benefits to the motoring public are an assurance of quality installation. Reduced risk of vehicle theft. Potential Insurance premium discounts on production of Thatcham TRI certificate. Enhanced re-sale value. Countrywide Installer Network. Free advice on the most effective system for all vehicles. Benefits to Installers include professional recognition from the insurance industry, VOSA, The Home Office and their customers. A basic TRI package is available for £125 plus VAT and includes 10 free certificates. There are other incremental pricing options depending on the number of certificates that the installer requires. For more information, installers can email tri@thatcham.org

ROCKFORD FOSGATE DEALER CONFERENCE A well-attended day in Coventry gave dealers a chance to learn about new products and exchange information. Martyn Williams reports

ockford’s product training day all kicked off at the Novotel Coventry on April 25. It was a good turn out with 43 dealers on the day coming from way up north, Wales and the deep
south west. At the start of the session everybody was asked to introduce themselves individually, always a good ice-breaker and the cause of some hilarity and banter between some of the people attending.

I asked Rob how business is going seeing that he started at the beginning of the economic down-turn? He said: “We are doing fine - I put this down to offering good advice and high quality installs. Most of our new customers have been a result of recommendations. We also get a lot of repeat business through customer satisfaction.” Any selling secrets? “We use the Rockford motto – ‘start at the top end’. We also avoid selling entry-level head units and concentrate on £130 to £250. It’s also important to look for attachment sales at all times.” For more information contact Vestatec Distribution 0208 867 2340 www.vestatec.co.uk

er d Weeken T E W ity Secur & io d u Car A Good old British weather didn’t dampen enthusiasm for the CAS event that was held April 28/29 at the company’s Hayes HQ. There was a humungeous turnout of enthusiasts with the large showroom rammed with customers. Suffice to say that CAS is one of the most media-savvy dealer/distributors in the UK – and it shows. The massive frontage of the buildings makes holding this event a doddle with EMMA SQ and sound pressure areas and a terrific manufacturer demonstrator turn out with lots of JBL representation and Raj’s R8 doing the honours with SmartStart luxury and iPhone appery. All the demo cars up the long side section of the building were under cover from a substantial framed tent to keep the rain out. Other brands represented included Rockford Fosgate with CAS Mini, Pioneer with their Merc van and Smartcar with djaying happening using the scratch ‘n’ mix unit in the back. JVC had a demonstrator along with Kenwood and several other manufacturers. the best value shops around, it goes apeshit.

REAR SENSOR FOCUS Ford Focus 2011 rear parking sensor installation needs some careful measuring but otherwise is a quick job that only requires removal of a couple of rear interior panels Ford has always been quick on the uptake of new technology and the latest OE option on the Focus is the Driver Assistance Pack. The bad news for the aftermarket is an optional extra cost of only £750 on the Titanium and Titanium X models which will take some of them out of the market. The

good news is that rear parking sensors are not an option until the customer reaches Zetec S model level with the Rear Park Assist (at over £500!) but with this City Pack there is the added attraction of power-fold mirrors – the sort of thing that Fiat was offering as standard on upper-range models over 15 years ago. Other items one hopes the aftermarket will catch up with is Ford’s Traffic Sign Recognition using a front-mounted camera constantly scanning the road ahead, looking for traffic signs. The system currently recognises both speed and overtaking signs, and displays both prominently on the dash. At least the aftermarket can come up with reliable indication of speed limits from sat navs such as TomTom which can be integrated into vehicles using some of the Sony range AV head units or portables using TomTom’s Professional Fit brackets and power supply kits. To start mark out the positions (1), the inner sensors go 23cm from the centre lower panel, mount the outer sensors 64cm from the centre and 6cm above the reflector. Now run cables to the nearside and use the existing blank grommet below fuse box for entry into vehicle (2). Next, remove nearside rear ‘D’ pillar trim (3), reverse light feed is Green/brown wire going to tailgate (4). The control box can be fitted on back panel above fuse box/rear light area (5). Buzzer can also be fitted up here (6). The completed installation (7) shows the central sensors on the lower lip of the bumper and the corner sensors (8) in their position just above the reflectors.
