the video output but I am happy to mention that this has been vastly improved as shown in the picture (nowhere near as sharp originally) and also that the remote control card is now much simpler to operate (even though it wasn’t a massive problem anyway).
EXPO 2012 – WELL WORTH A VISIT! ‘Times is ‘ard’ some dealers tell me. Well I predict it could get arder, sorry, harder for those who don’t go to the only trade show devoted to our industry. I’ve got a good feeling that really, you don’t need any nudging from me if last year’s attendance is anything to go by. All the exhibitors were upbeat about the quality of YOUR enquiries about business opportunities. Still not going? Well, just remember about those other enthusiastic dealers – one might be just around the corner to you!
Catching the BUS Most of you will know that all Can-BUS interfaces are not created equal, indeed, not all seemingly modern head units are created equal when it comes to interfacing – particularly if the data was last updated about 10 years ago (that’s why my steering wheel phone button will never work)! Anyway, I have fitted the third different make of interface to my late model Merc to adapt an aftermarket head unit (I’ve been told that owners don’t do this to newish Mercs!), and finally, the car doesn’t think I’ve fitted a combined head unit and interior light! Thank you Connects2.
Graphic Evidence In our January issue we installed and tested the four latest hideaway DAB tuners on the market, the Celsus MediaDAB, Connects2 AutoDAB, PURE 300Di and C-KO. The C-KO was thought to appeal to customers by being a fraction of the cost of the others but is not designed to integrate so would need some sort of display arrangement depending on the vehicle and its equipment. At the time, there was some criticism about the quality of

DEMO CAR
MILL AUTO’S
VIBE CITROEN
Mill Autoquip is a longestablished parts and accessories group in the South West with branches in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Part of the company’s active business promotions was to produce a youthoriented demo car associated with the launch of its Vibe Superstore in St Austell. Retail Manager Simon Partleton tells the story... Our Citroen C2 van started life in 2006 as part of the Mill Autoquip delivery fleet for three years. With just 50k on the clock, a plan was set in motion to put together a demo car. We were just launching our St Austell Vibe superstore and we had borrowed many Vibe demo cars for events in the past. They had worked so well for us at shows and open days so the decision was made to see what we could come up with one of our own to help drive awareness for the retail shops that we were rolling out across the South West. After what seemed like a million meetings where plans were drawn up then ripped up again, we eventually agreed on the best strategy for a demo car. It had to be a little different than the norm so we went for an outrageous body kit. This seemed like a good idea until we started getting expensive quotes from local body

|Component Speakers l CLARION Clarion tells us that a new range of speakers, including component speakers, is due to hit the market any minute now, but unfortunately they weren’t ready to talk about here. M.E.N will keep you up-to-date as soon as they’re out though. In the meantime, Clarion offers the Ultra, Platinum and SRE series of speakers. The 2-way 6.5in Ultra component set features titanium-plated fibreglass cone woofers with powerful strontium magnets and titanium-plated silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. That may sound like a chemistry lesson, but in truth it just sounds like high quality audio at attractive mid-range pricing. The Platinum Series, with 6.5in or 5.25in sizes, uses TM-GF/titanium wire composite cone woofers with rubber surrounds and offer wide frequency ranges, with SRPs of £101 and £81 respectively. l FLI AUDIO Next year will see the 10th anniversary of FLI Audio which means customers have been benefitting from the great looking and sharp sounding products for quite a while now. Their 2-way component speakers keep the trend for offering those qualities at value prices going, with what FLI say are ‘serious’ advances in affordable speaker technology. They use specially formed glass fibre cones in both the 5in or 6in mid-range speakers to deliver fast and accurate bass, while the silk domed tweeters produce smooth and enjoyable high frequencies. Kicker says that nothing from their Acoustic Laboratories to go in an automobile has ever sounded as clean, accurate or pure as these component speakers, which is high praise indeed. SRPs start at £319.99 so they’re not cheap but that won’t matter for customers who know quality counts. Available in the same sizes are the component speaker sets found in the RS Series, designed to fit a midrange price point but to provide impressive reliability and tremendous audio clarity. The best-selling Kicker component speakers though are the KS Series, DS Series and ES Series products. KS component speakers come in 2-way 5.25in or 6.5in sizes and provide smooth, clear mids and highs from SRPs of £129.99. The DS Series 6.5in components come in at a lower price point but offer exceptional DS Series

apid increases in sales of Smartphone’s means the cradle market is going bananas. Smartphone’s can now be used to control head units and feed music, video and apps through in-car systems and are increasingly used for navigation and incident video recorders! These on-going developments ensure that there is still a progressive market for cradles whether powered or not. If selling a fully installed hands-free solution is not an option then why not make money on some of these specialist products?

variable colours and sound-to-light synchronisation. Sony’s 2012 launch of products, as claimed market leader, will attract much interest in the industry along with the introduction of a new 2012 catalogue which emphasises its interest in the UK market.
XAV-601BT Star of the new line-up is the double Din XAV-601BT AV (pictured above) receiver featuring a high-quality WVGA display with ‘swish and pinch’ smartphone-style touch screen. More important is the MirrorLink technology (as well as Bluetooth) which enables user’s compatible smartphones to be literally mirrored on the receiver’s touch screen. Cool or what? iPhones are catered for with a Passenger App Control, this allows connection of compatible Apple devices via USB (front and rear) to display videos and compatible applications onto the screen of the 601. Bluetooth audio streaming with compatible devices is also a feature of ‘BT’ series head units and it will display music metadata if included. Bluetooth profiles supported include HFP, A2DP, PBAP, and AVRCP 1.3. Like Sony’s current top range double-dinners, TomTom Live HD Traffic is available with the 601, but this time the plug-in module will be available as an option. The XAV-601BT has a long list of features but another worth mentioning is the excellent security offered by the fully-detachable front panel. As yet there are no price announcements but the expectation is that it will be a very competitive figure.
CDX-GT565 Also likely to be a popular choice with its high specification and SRP probably around £119.99, is the GT 565 with all the features of the 4000 apart from Bluetooth. One of the top attractions will be the variable illumination offering adjustment through 35,000 colours and it has the same high power output plus the all-important feature of full control of iPhones and iPlayers via the USB slot. Media playback capability is the same and audio tricks also include the seven band equaliser, seven sound modes and time alignment. Like the 4000, it also has an Aux-in socket and rear line-out.
Lots more too New head units on their way include an exciting digital radio tunerequipped model the DAB700, expected to be pitched at about £200, available later this year. For more details of models on the way, keep in touch with your distributor or one of Sony’s agents – see below.

suitable for vinyl, leather or cloth seating. The pads are constructed with advanced, OEstyle, carbon filament internals which offer equal heat dispersion (from 30 to 70 deg C). The heater pads are supplied with cabling and is thin and flexible enough to be fitted directly underneath the outer covering of the upholstery and held firmly in place by self-adhesive edges. It uses a modular wiring system for ease of installation. Most important of all, an OE-style performance is assured with a fast warm-up time. There are four single seat kits available with a choice of two different heater pad arrangements and the choice of two-position, or variable heat switch. Fitting the kit The first decision is to decide whether the full size heater pads and wiring kit (1) needs to be fitted or whether the seat fastenings dictate split pads. There is also a choice of two-position heat switches or a variable type. Most car seat upholstery is retained with replaceable metal clips but the Mercedes example shown here, in common with a few

The variable heat switch (9) is slightly bigger and was just a little too large to fit into the C-Class Merc’s seat

Casting the Net Online advertising may be the way forward, but what do you really need to know about it? Twenty years ago, if a customer had asked what your website address was or if they could ‘Google’ your company, you’d have been well within your rights to give them a funny look and walk away. Now though, these questions are commonplace, even to the most basic of companies…and if you’re still likely to give the asker a funny look and walk away, then you may as well stop reading this article now. No doubt, you’ve got a failing business you need to try and sell!

Obviously, this also applies to those more entrenched online already too. Online advertising offers many of the things that traditional print advertising can, but in the modern age there’s a generally a greater pot of potential customers you can target. There’s also a more instant and tangible way of measuring the success of your advertising spend, which can quickly tell you how whether it’s working for you or not. M.E.N looks at three different ways in which retailers can use three of the bigger online advertising tools, each with their own merits… but equally with some downsides too.

SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES – A direct way to reach customers HOW IT WORKS: The likes of Facebook and Twitter give companies a great forum to speak directly with their followers, and are relatively easy to self-manage (although there are PR companies out there who will do this for you). The tricky bits are getting the followers in the first place and making sure your posts are interesting. Gratuitous posts about your products are likely to lose impact over time. Alternatively, a site like Facebook can also let you target your offerings at very particular demographics in their paid-for advertising. Working

INDUSTRY PERSONALITY
|2012
Nick turner C-KO’s Marketing Manager, Team player and ‘can do’ guy, Nick Turner is questioned by Martyn Williams at C-KO’s Harrow HQ Nick first worked for C-KO when he was 19, an industrial placement from the University of the West of England in Bristol where he was studying marketing. After graduation he got a full-time job with C-KO. Commenting on his start with the company, Nick said: “I was introduced by friend Tony Rook who already worked for the company. Tony is responsible for business development and is great at engaging people and building relationships and he is always coming up with sales promotion ideas and has a ‘can do’ attitude and I’ve always been the same. It’s also great working for Proprietor Edward Collins. We all know him as Eddie, and he creates almost a family atmosphere and is very supportive towards staff. If you do what you say you are going to do, he’s an ideal boss!” In the early days Nick ended up working his way through all the departments which gave him a good grounding with the company. Once behind the marketing desk, he was in his element. He said: “I’ve always played with computers and Photoshop, and as part of my marketing position I noticed that we were paying a lot for product images which I could easily do myself. It went from there to producing flyers and adverts in-house which meant we could work to a tight schedule to save time and money. “Part of our success is the great team we have at C-KO with people such as Errol Williams, our Technical Manager. He is a fantastic asset to the company because of his depth of knowledge about everything electronic right down to component level. He really knows how things work so, if you’ve got a problem with any electronics, he can sort it out without the outside help to which some companies have to resort. With his electronic background and my marketing knowledge, we share the responsibilities of working with Chinese manufacturers to ensure products are correct for the market. “We’ve also got Martin Harniman working for us on the technical side. He is quite young and a fast learner having already worked for BT on phone servicing. He goes to college once a week so his knowledge and usefulness is growing all the time and he has a big input into our DAB developments. “Then we have Michael Brouder who is on the phone doing sales support. He joined us last November on a Government young apprentice scheme and has done very well and has got a good telephone manner.” There were lots more Nick wanted to say about C-KO staff but I steered him on to the subject of digital radio. How’s development going at the moment?
52
www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
“We are concentrating on making our DAB tuner compatible with OE equipment. We have strong relationships with a company in Europe involved in interfacing units suitable for these applications. These products are in development now but in the meantime we have developed our universal DAB tuner with a better, clearer GUI and a simplified remote control. We have seen a DAB and DVBT showing a positive upward trend and now with everything on the TV side being digital, our tuners have been selling well. Universal headrests are another mainstay which was slow at first but they have really taken over from the days of installers fitting discrete DVD players.” I asked Nick how he saw C-KO’s business split at the moment? He said: “We are looking at about 50% on multimedia products, 40% parking and reversing systems and a 10% spread on the rest of our products.” How do you see developments in 2012? I do look forward to getting involved with more responsibility within the company. In the industry there seems to be a lot of development of rear seat entertainment with the larger phones and iPad. Looking further ahead, I think that 4G will also be important for the industry. Also screens are likely to get better definition and DAB looks like it will be a nice little saviour within the industry. Anything that the Government backs will hopefully mean we are on to a winner. What is your proudest achievement outside work? Probably standing upright on my surfboard in my teens for the first time. Tony and I used to go
We have seen DAB and DVBT showing a positive upward trend What are people at work most likely to hear you say? “Probably ‘yes’ – I like to take on every opportunity and give it my all.” Nick wanted to get a picture of the team – those who were in the office that day – and also mentioned two other stalwart C-KO people who were not present as they are mostly out on the road - Pete Lloyd, Sales Representative for the North (07841 066 622) and Maggie Kington, Sales Representative for the South West (07891 743 608).

WHAT’S MY NAME? Second in a series on aspects of business is mobile installer, Jeff Scott, Director, Ifitstuff who passes on some experiences and advice about business naming and branding Your business name is something that is very important and will reflect a great deal about you. Your business name is the cornerstone of your image and brand, it is also something that is likely to be mentioned in all telephone conversations with customers and suppliers. It will hopefully be your web address too and will be the key for existing and potential new customers to find you on Google, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, You Tube and other social media. Your customers will hopefully use it when recommending your service to their friends and acquaintances, so I can’t express how important the choice is! Your business name should be something that is easy to remember, I would also suggest that it is clear and spelled correctly, what I mean by that is that you should hopefully only have to say the name once when you are on the phone rather than having to repeat it six times and then spell it out as believe me it can be frustrating to repeat it thousands of times per year! When I first started trading my company name was Sussex Soundz with a Z instead of an S. It was 2003 at the time and I thought that it was funky and some of my customers liked it too. After a while I realised that it was very 90’s and dated, then two years of explaining on the phone that it is

Growing the UK Economy Arthur Deebie talks about the youth of today and speculates how useful they could be in business if guided in the right direction As I write this, we are a few days into National Apprentice week. Modern schemes are very different to the three to five year apprenticeships that died out with heavy industry and there is no doubt in my mind that every single business owner has a duty to support them.

ADAM RAYNER
|2012
RAYNER RANTS Adam Rayner has a bee in his bonnet about a new development in how cheaply a ‘bass box’ can be made… Oooh, where to start? TURKEY TWIZZLERS! I am more steamed up about this issue than any in years. Second only to my fantasy life as ‘Porter’ from the Mel Gibson flick Payback, I am vexed. And as yet, I am still not utterly sure who the culprits are. If it is you, dear reader at whom I tilt, please understand that this is not personal, it’s about love for the end user, to whom I have always remained faithful, having been that impoverished kid with big audio urges.

CELLULAR installation FIAT DUCATO 61 PLATE This month we are showing a cellular installation into a Fiat Ducato, not the hardest installation in the world but an insight nevertheless. Start by removing the radio (1), this utilises the standard ISO keys, you will find an ISO connection complete with +30 & Ignition feed. (2) Remove the speedo clock housing, to do this remove the two torx screws top left and right on each corner of the cover. There is plenty of room to mount the junction box and /or a tracking system. (3)

The above picture was taken from outside the vehicle to show you the amount of room available. (4) You can now run the microphone cable and have easy access to the junction box. We mounted the microphone next to the interior light, very easy to remove.

07
Next, remove the switch plate to the right of the steering column. (5) With the customers permission file out a small hole to route the screen cable and mount as per the picture below. (6) All in a very simple installation and easily completed within 60 minutes.
