EDITOR’S COMMENT Testing times
T
he other day, I happened to be talking to another motoring journalist. Yes, we were in a pub, but neither of us was driving, so it’s irrelevant. Anyway, the subject came up that if we were to take our driving tests again, now, did we think we would pass? He raised the question, and it was actually based on a press release he had seen, sent out by GEM Motoring Assist, who had asked UK motorists that very same question. The results of the survey revealed that 76% of motorists believed they would pass again on the very first attempt. A bit cocky maybe? I said I felt confident, but I know I’m not the same driver I was at 17, although in theory that should be because I am better – older and wiser, so to speak. My biggest challenge might actually be the theory test, and drivers in the survey agreed. Less than 50% were unsure how they would fare here, and only 35% said they were still confident in their knowledge of the Highway Code. In other statistics, apparently 26% of those interviewed felt that parking would be their biggest let-down in the practical test, while reversing was deemed the second biggest cause of failure. It was this point in particular that made me start to think about how much this shaking confidence was caused by the fear of bad habits setting in, and how much is it because in-car technology has changed our driving styles, to the point where we feel reliant and perhaps a bit less sure if made to drive purely on our own skills? Parking was mentioned, but how many of that 26% only feel confident about parking when using sensors? Again, 35% say they are confident in their knowledge of the Highway Code – is that because the other 65% use navigation systems or speed camera detectors to make them aware of speed limits on certain roads, rather than knowing this themselves? It’s like the mobile phone – these days you can’t imagine life without it, but there were times when people managed just fine. If you took the in-car technology away that you are used to, relying on the same skills as when you first passed your test, would you still be a good driver? Anyway, I think the real moral of this story is not to go out for drinks with motoring journalists who just read press releases all day. Enjoy the issue!

The laser jammer debate It seems that our feature on speed camera detectors and laser jammers in the June 2012 issue has sparked some debate over the legality of such devices. So is their fitment and usage likely to get you in trouble? Steve Warren of TTW Ltd, and stockist of such brands as Beltronics and Blinder, says not. “There is no law making laser jammers 6 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
illegal to buy, sell, fit or even turn on,” he says. “There must be well over a half a million jammers out there now and prosecutions are very rare. But in the cases where there has been one, it is generally the small handful of people that continue to speed and take the mick – laser jammers are not a license to speed. The message is that if the device
needs to jam, then you are driving too fast and need to slow down. TTW will always be in a position to best advise people at the time. There are several enthusiasts’ websites that can also offer information on the legality of jammers.” TTW Ltd 01159 503852, www.blinderdirect.co.uk

Digital Radio UK’s objective is to drive digital listening (31.5% of total listening is currently to a digital platform) and increase sales of digital radios (over 15 million sets sold to date), so it has launched a major industry communications campaign on BBC TV and radio, commercial radio, national print and online. One of its aims is to direct people into stores, with dealers able to benefit from the campaign. The first opportunity is to use the Digital Radio logo, as seen on all of DRUK’s communications (TV, print, retail etc), to help gain brand recognition. Also, get your company listed as a digital radio installer on www.getdigitalradio.com/buy-dab-digital-radio – just email sam.bonham@digitalradiouk.com. In return, just use the Digital Radio logo on your own website. There are FAQ sheets and leaflets available from DRUK too, or use the website – download a PDF at www.getdigitalradio.com/whats-ondab/retailers to show customers the content available on digital radio compared to analogue in cities across the UK. Or use the postcode checker at www.getdigitalradio.com/checkit, to show customers the stations available in their area.
How you can help Would you be interested in being listed on an online consumer-facing database with all other in-vehicle retailers? What in-store point of sales materials would be most useful to you? Large window stickers, posters, badges etc? Digital Radio UK is preparing an independent retailer store pack to help dealers sell more digital radios, and needs your input. Just email your company name, full address including postcode, phone number, and whether or not you install digital radio, to sam.bonham@ digitalradiouk.com, along with your thoughts. You will then receive Drive 2 Digital newsletters and be part of a new Digital Radio Database. For all enquiries regarding the above, please contact sam.bonham@digitalradiouk.com

MEET THE DEALERS /// SOURCE SOUNDS ///
From the Source In the first of a new series, we find out what dealers around the UK have been up to. This month it’s Paul Ellis at Source Sounds in Sheffield How would you sum up business over the past couple of months? We have been quite busy despite the poor weather, however things are still very up and down, and every day is a challenge.
Which products are you selling a lot of at the moment? We are doing well with audio upgrades and also Double Din navigation units.
Any particular jobs you seem to be doing a lot of in your workshop? Bluetooth kits are still strong for us, and audio upgrades, but even though the cars we are working on are the more awkward ones, we are not scared to have a go because we have invested heavily in training and the correct tools to work on the higher end vehicles.
any favourite brands? We work closely with Brian and Jas at distribution company Four Masters, as we feel that the idea of collectively promoting
ourselves as well as their specialist brands has helped keep driving customers through our door.
What do you think is the key to success in the current environment? How do you keep making money? Understanding your key strengths and weaknesses is vital in the current economic environment. Probably four years ago we could see things would get harder going forward, and we made lots of changes within our company to keep costs as low as possible, as lots of companies just sit back and don’t take control of their destiny. We have made sure we keep the quality of our work the top priority, and quote a fair price for a proper job, as lots of our competitors just try to do it as cheap as possible and cut corners, and this often leads to customer dissatisfaction. Making money is what every successful business should try to do, as profit is not a dirty word.
Have you got anything special planned to give business a push? Promoting our business is always key to us, and we attend lots of events and shows, and have spent lots on getting out there to interact with future customers. We believe that factory integration and hopefully DAB upgrades will give us the future growth in our business.
What’s the toughest job you’ve had in your workshop recently? We do quite a lot of bespoke work and this is always more difficult than normal phone kits and audio upgrades, but truly we enjoy the harder jobs as a challenge keeps you on your toes and makes it more fun. Contact Source Sounds on 0114 257 1550, or visit www.sourcesounds.com

I’ve got a Range Rover Evoque booked in next week to have some front sensors fitted. I haven’t worked on one of these before, even though I’m pretty sure what I need to do. Just wondered if anyone else had done it successfully and had advice. Dave Eammon Ferry recently posted on that particular make at Ifitstuff.com – also check out this issue’s parking sensor feature on p34. “With the Evoque, there is little or no access to the rear of the bumper, so I say take it off, well one side anyway,” says Eammon. “There are four plastic screws on top of the grille, and four plastic clips under that, with a number of screws and bolts holding the bottom panel in. “The splash guard is trickier. Remove a front wheel and unclip the wheelarch trim, it just pulls off, from the front to just past the joint where the bumper meets the wing. Remove the screws holding the front part, and the splash guard has two 10mm nuts and one plastic screw holding it in place behind the wheelarch trim, and a further one at the top of the guard. Once removed it’ll pull down. “For the bumper, at the joint of the wing and the bumper there are two 10mm bolts, so unscrew these from the bumper side of the joint, then remove the heavy plastic retaining clip from between these two bolts. At this stage the bumper should pull forward, allowing access to the rear in order to run cables. Feed cables from the passenger side, up behind the headlight on the driver’s side. “With the cables, the Evoque has a double bulkhead and little or no room to work – get wireless sensors if you can, but if not then the only way to get around it is to run the cables behind the driver’s side wing and in through the grommet in the door pillar.
The wing is held on top by two 10mm bolts, which if you remove you can pull out to get the cables in behind. The grommet is easily accessed by unclipping the side panel of the dash and reaching in, and there is a heavy rubber flap covering the hole. “When I did this job, we fitted rear sensors, operated via a switch fitted beside the boot release. The sensors were fitted quite high.”
Tweeting about it I’m looking at building a sound quality system for a customer, and I’m thinking it’ll be best to make a build on the A pillar. But I’m thinking of getting the mid in there also. How can I do this and still make it look good? Sam There was a really good tutorial on Ifitstuff. com not so long ago, written by James Patterson. Here is what he advises: “I did an A pillar build with a DLS 2.5 inch soft dome mid-range and a 1 inch tweeter, both pointing at the top of the opposing pillar, with the tweeter about 2 inches closer to the listener. “When you’ve worked out positioning, cut some small tweeter rings from MDF and attach to the A pillar by gluing ‘sticks’ of the wood. Be patient, and adjust to get the shapes and angles you are happy with. I use hot glue here, as it is easy to reposition and just picks off. Mitre glue is then used to fix the shapes in place, some P40 also, then smoothed off and covered in polyester cloth. “As the build had to be in the car, clipping onto plastic clips, I didn’t want to risk the job warping as it dried, so a weak mix of resin was made using 1.5% catalyst in the resin. Around 200ml was mixed to 3ml of catalyst. I used masking tape on the interior to protect from stray resin too, then once dry I used the router and hard drill to cut the driver holes. For trimming, a Stanley knife and hairdryer should be enough if working with vinyl.”

DEMO CAR /// DLS VECTRA ///
Master blaster Martyn Williams takes a look at this competitionwinning Vectra install, built by Andy Blanch and packed with DLS speakers and amps
Andy Blanch’s DLS install is an excellent show-piece for the company
20 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
L
ots of the top competitors taking part in sound-offs are not professional installers. Typical of this dedicated bunch is Andy Blanch, who won the Master 5 (five-channel) class at the 2010 Euro Finals in Rotterdam, organised by EMMA (European Mobile Media Association), and came second with the same car at the finals in Nuremberg last year. It took Andy about a year to complete his class-winning install to its current guise, which is sponsored by DLS in Sweden and built to conform to the EMMA rulebook. In all, the car has picked up over 50 various awards since Andy first started competing in 2004, including four European championship awards alongside the two already-mentioned EMMA nods. It also achieved second place in IASCA (International Auto Sound Challenge Association) Street Pro 2005 in Belgium and first place in IASCA Street Pro 2007 in Italy. The Italian event was in Adria, just south of Venice, and 1,000 miles from Andy’s London home. Stopping only for fuel, he drove the whole trip in one go, which took 22 hours, got home three days later, did the washing, and then drove to Denmark the next day for another competition.
What is EMMA? EMMA (European Mobile Media Association) was founded to create a level playing field for sound quality competitions in Europe and to unify the different rulebooks that are used all over the Continent. Car audio competition has its roots in the States, where IASCA was the first organisation that designed a competition manual for SQ (Sound Quality) events. See www.emma-uk.com
One of the secrets of the ultimate sound reproduction in the car, as many will know, is a lack of resonance. This has been taken to the extreme in the Vectra, which now has a roof solid enough for someone to stand on without it flexing even a tiny amount. It has over 200 pieces of aluminium box tubing bonded to the panel using Tiger Seal, which is normally used for sticking windscreens! The standard dash was cut away back to the fixing points and remodelled in fibreglass, while the standard instrument binnacle was moved to allow for a perfect installation position of the midrange speakers and a screen to be fitted in front of the driver and passenger (earning extra EMMA points), and the trip computer display was fitted in place of the ashtray. All speakers, even
Midranges (model 3C) in the dash are part of the DLS Scandinavia 6/3 set
including the tweeters, are mounted in 5mm thick steel baffles, which as well as improving the strength of the installation allows for machine screws to be used – not a self-tapper in sight! The amp rack and in the boot is made from a welded steel frame, again adding strength, and the ability to use machine screws rather than wood screws. The only MDF used in this car is in the cosmetic trim panels. All of the speaker grilles and boot trim rings on the car are custom-made from aluminium using water-jet cutting and then painted, along with the centre console, door handles and other interior pieces to match the colour of the original GSi steering wheel. Also, the Alpine F1 head unit install is a bit special, with the unit’s surround actually moulded into the centre console.
The roof is now solid enough for someone to stand on without it flexing even a tiny amount Perfect speaker performance is assured by a 10 inch sub mounted where the glove compartment used to be in its own moulded 20 litre enclosure. No electronic tricks needed here to get an ‘up front’ bass sound. All speakers are in sealed enclosures with the midrange speakers in the dash mounted in two-litre boxes, and the larger door speakers getting seven litres each. Despite the extreme multi-channel capability of the processor, the mids and tweets are running through a passive crossover to keep Andy in the five-channel competition category, where he has done so well. If you fancy a closer look at the car, his next public appearance will be at Trax, the last major show of the season at Silverstone on Sunday, September 2. He is also a national and international EMMA head judge, which will keep him busy (he doesn’t judge his own car by the way!).

Also big thanks to the Amp Doctor, responsible for the DC to DC charger (www.amp-doctor.co.uk), and ‘Roo’, Dave Legg and everyone else past and present at EMMA UK, cupaz.com, plus Andy’s workplace and girlfriend Steph for putting up with it all over the years

ADVERTORIAL /// PARKSAFE ///
s s e in s u b l u f s s e c c u “A s is about quality of ” t c u d o r p d n a e ic v r e s Mick Barber, managing director of Parksafe Automotive, reveals the biggest lessons from his 25 years in the industry
P
arksafe Automotive continues its success story. Formerly known as CSS, the company has been servicing customers for 25 years, with managing director Mick Barber using his vast and detailed knowledge of the industry to take it from strength to strength. “I work on the basic principles that can be applied to all businesses,” he says. “It’s about quality service and quality product.” Mick has seen many companies come and go during his time in the industry. He feels too many have been quick to hit the panic button, looking to make the sale at the expense of everything else, particularly common in these current economic times. “What I’ve learned comes from talking to people in the industry, and listening to engineers who have also had years of experience,” he says. So what are Mick’s rules to aid company survival? “It can be boiled down to several key factors,” he says. “The first is quality. We’ve built Parksafe Automotive around our knowledge of industry requirements, and we’ve developed our products specifically in line with these. It’s important to listen to your customers, to help them maintain maximum profits. Always get feedback, build those relationships and react accordingly.” Parksafe Automotive has built an impressive range of products by following these basic
22 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
principles, suiting almost every industry. Available now from the company are camera kits, mirror monitors, wireless parking sensor kits, IP rated waterproof kits, LED daytime running lights and more. “And all of our products maintain the same level of quality, and approach to their concept and design,” says Mick. “We don’t compromise on this at all, and we know that what our customers want is more features, easy fitment and more profit. We aim and do just that.” Mick smiles when he reveals the phrase he often uses to describe Parksafe Automotive’s approach to its products. “We call it ‘fit and forget’,” he says. “It’s about giving the customer the maximum profit through the confidence that they can fit something once, and there will be no

We offer parking solutions, but we still push quality in terms of our service and product complaints because we have supplied a quality, reliable product.” Mick says that another danger for companies is complacency and not keeping up-to-date with the latest developments. “I suppose the bottom line is wanting things too easy,” says Mick. “It’s the easiness of just having the money coming in, or of sticking with the same product you’ve been fitting for a number of years, because you are used to it – but will you be getting the maximum profit from this? Just as we listen to our customers, they in turn should listen to theirs.” Mick is confident that while some aspects of today’s business can be challenging, not losing sight of the basic principles you set out with when you first started is the best way to

guarantee success – and these are rules that can be applied to any company. “With Parksafe Automotive, at the end of the day we offer parking solutions, but we still push quality in terms of our service and product,” he says. “It’s something you have to do.” For more info on Parksafe Automotive, call 01773 746591 or visit the website at www.parksafeautomotive.com

PRODUCT FOCUS /// ENTRY LEVEL SPEAKERS ///
Speak easy These speakers could be an easy sell, showing customers that for very little money it’s still possible to make big improvements to their in-car sounds. Chris Anderson finds out more
T
here is an old saying in the world of car audio that if you want to upgrade the sounds in your car, the most affordable and simplest step you can make is to upgrade your speakers. This has not changed, despite all of the technological changes thrown at us these days. Whatever a customer comes into your store for, the point is to make them realise that a cost-effective way to make their purchase sound better is by changing the speakers found on the end of it. Sure, many cars have their own speakers and sound systems these days, and many customers do not like to change very much because a) they don’t see the point, and b) they aren’t keen to risk devaluing their car by changing things. But aftermarket speakers
are more durable, probably with a denser cone for a more accurate bass response, and in two- or three-way configurations will bring a lot more detail. These are results you can hear instantly, don’t cost too much, and in the majority of cases can fit into a factory position and be run off the head unit. The collection of entry level models here fill of all those criteria, at a price where if a customer still isn’t sure, there is an extra incentive for them to make that purchase in terms of them being affordable. It can be a nice little add-on if they have popped in for a Bluetooth kit or a new head unit – make it sound better for not a lot extra. And then maybe if they get the bug, higher end speakers, amps and the rest can follow.

SRE1032R
RRP £34 Clarion Clarion has a number of affordable two-, three-, four- and five-way speakers and components in its SRE range. At just £34, the 4 inch threeway coaxial SRE1032R models should mean a big jump in sound quality from even the smallest spaces, with peak handling of 200W. For something bigger, the 6.5 inch SRE1722S models push the power to 300W and come with their own tweeters, all for £69. If it’s more bass the customer needs, the four-way 6x9s rated at 550W peak, the SRE6942R set at £79, will definitely do the trick. Clarion 01793 859560, www.clarion.com/gb
Caliber
SXE-1325S
RRP £39 Alpine If you’re looking for affordable Alpine speakers, then the Perfect Fit range is the place to start. There are a number of two-way options here, with peak power handling from 150W-280W – like the SXE-1325S (£39) 5.25 inch models rated at 200W, or the SXE-1725S (£39) 6.5 inch rated at 220W. The speakers can be run off the head unit and come with all necessary adaptors – no grilles, but if the idea is they just slot them in where the old models were, there is hardly any need. There are even two sets supplied with separate tweeters, should that be required instead. Alpine 02476 719620, www.alpine-uk.com

The UK distributors of Caliber, Celsus, cite the brand’s CSD coaxial range as great value drop-in speakers from one of Europe’s most reliable audio brands. There isn’t much to argue about with that here either with the three different-sized offerings available, starting from £29. Biggest here is the CALCSD6 two-way coaxial set, with 16.5cm cones, 150W maximum power handling and a £39 price tag. Like many factory replacement speakers, no grilles are supplied with these speakers. Celsus 01202 664390, www.celsusice.co.uk

Focal Focal is one of those names synonymous with highend speakers, but the brand does cater for the entry level also – granted, its prices might be steeper than the others on these pages, but this is due to the French company’s ever-present attention to detail and technological know-how. The Access series is the jumping on point, with the 4 inch two-way coaxial 100CA1 models rated at 40W RMS and costing £99. But guaranteed it will be money well spent. RRP £39 Kenwood Strangely, Kenwood hasn’t accepted any sponsorship from a certain fast food chain for its KFC range – instead it’s just been concentrating on making good speakers. The KFC-E134 three-way flush-mount models are 13cm wide, rated at 150W peak, and priced £34. Slightly larger, the KFC-E1764 three-way models are 17cm, with 200W peak, all for £39. And then there are the 6x9 KFC-M6934A speakers priced at £49, with 360W. All cabling and moulded grilles are supplied. Kenwood 01923 816444, www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk

JVC JVC has quite a few offerings when it comes to entrylevel speakers, with the V-series and ZX-series both trying to tempt customers for not a lot. The V line uses carbon mica cones, with a number of sizes and configurations available – the 16cm CS-V627E twoway coaxial models, for example, offer 230W peak and cost £29. The ZX-series is smaller, with threeand four-way models – try the CS-ZX6940 four-way 6x9s, with a 550W peak handling and a cost of £79. JVC 0208 450 3282, www.jvc.co.uk

RRP £49 Mutant
Kicker As you might expect from a brand with as impressive a reputation as Kicker, even when it comes to the entry level its range is very extensive. Just £34 could get you something from the brand’s ES-series, with a number of components and coaxials available. The ES693 models shown are£49, rated at 270W peak. Next up from that is the DS series, with prices starting at £49, and more sizes to cater for the most awkward factory fit. Armour Automotive 01420 487110, www.armourauto.com

OPINION /// ANDY MILLS ///
Mission accomplished? Pondering the benefits of having a company mission statement... and then sticking by it
Andy MIlls is a former editor of MEN and industry journalist
E
ver wondered what the point of companies having catchphrases is? You know the ones, and I bet you could identify the companies from these phrases without me even naming names; “I’m Loving It”, “Just Do It”, “Every Little Helps”, “It’s Good To Talk”. These catchphrases, mottos or mission statements are intended to do two things. Primarily they are a promise to customers. In the above cases these promises seem to be that they’ll; make food you love (McDonald’s), give you the gear to get active (Nike), give you more choice and more savings on your shopping (Tesco) and ensure you can talk on the phone (BT). The second reason is to give their employees a focus to work towards. This is much like a school’s coat of arms where a Latin motto is intended to inspire pupils. At my old school it was ‘Quicquid agas sapiens age fortiter ex animoque’, which roughly meant; whatever you do, do it with all your might. While not everyone bought into that motto, plenty of pupils clearly followed the sentiment.
Adopting a mission statement could provide focus and clarity, helping you stay true to how you want to be known

These statements may seem a bit wishy-washy at first, a marketing gimmick, but I’m inclined to think in the right situation they’re a real asset. For example, back in the Max Power days, the strapline for the magazine was: “The Definitive Guide to Arsing About in Cars”. Couple that to a Max Power logo, a picture of a wild car and a half-naked lady, and it was pretty clear what this particular title was about. I liked the fact that it used the word ‘definitive’ too. By not being the sort of word the public would associate with modified car culture, it suggested that there was perhaps a little more to it all than burnouts, boobs and bodykits. It was also a good reference point to thinking about features we’d run too. Everything that strapline implied helped ensure that the content was informative, fun and based around the car culture we were immersed in.
A few years before Max Power closed, this strapline was replaced by something more corporate sounding (I can’t even recall what it was), seemingly in a bid to attract new readers. This was a fatal error, as although it may seem a small change, the old line actually encapsulated the soul of the magazine, and that is probably what readers bought into more than anything else. So why am I even thinking about this? Well, it dawned on me that we could all do with a little motto to live by, whether it’s for the company we run or even for the person we are. What one phrase defines the things your company does, or what motto could you print after your own name to let people know your personality or interests? It’s one of the trickiest writing tasks you can have, because you have to say so much in so few letters, but if you nail it then it can be a real bonus to how you approach things, and for companies, how people respond to your business. If my company installed high-end car stereos, perhaps ‘Driving Audio Perfection’ would work. If I fitted all kinds of electronics including security systems, sat nav etc, then ‘Excelling in All In-Car Electronics’ might do the trick. They’re not perfect, but you can see that they give a fair impression of what your company may do, and be a bit of a mantra for you and your employees to follow. As the owner of a shop, wouldn’t you want your employees to know they were expected to ‘drive audio perfection’? If they had that in mind every time they dealt with a customer, fitted a speaker or answered the phone, I’d be more than happy. When you think about it, perhaps you have mottos that you’ve lived by without realising it. “If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly” and “treat others as you would want to be treated” have been things I’ve had sloshing around in my mind over the years. That would probably combine into my own motto of something simple like “Do the Right Thing”. It doesn’t mean I would always do the right thing, but I wouldn’t mind if people thought that about me, and I’d feel comfortable enough having that as a bit of a guide in how to act. Adopting a mission statement like this might not be lifechanging, but for people and businesses alike, it could just provide a bit more focus and clarity when things become cloudy, helping you stay true to being who you want to be and how you want to be known.

How well does it work?
Get this installed in a car or your showroom, show it off right and you will get literal marvelling from your customers. And you can say, “It’s marvellous, I saw you marvel, right then!” It’s like something Tony Stark designed. Parrot has speakers designed by Philippe Starck, mind, called Zimku by Parrot, but he’s more aesthete than Iron Man.
What’s it like?
The company that is well known for its Bluetooth products also has a fully featured head unit on offer. Adam Rayner investigates
T
his is the beginning of the ‘new world’ – not a head unit in the traditional sense, that plays a particular music format or even has a mechless digital thing going on instead, but a creature more like a computer in terms of how it works (try using that explanation as an opening line with your customers, maybe). This means a set of cables like tentacles, quite unlike any other rig, and while the front end actual unit is a fragment the size or mass of a decent quality CD tuner – ie it’s small and light, and does not go back far into the dash – the box of extra cables and connectables is unequalled in car audio and doubles the carton’s size. And you will have to learn a new set of operational logic routes so as not to look a prune if you try to demo it.
32 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
It presents a clean face to the world, half screen, the rest big twiddly knobs and brightlylit buttons. Parrot could probably learn a little from Alpine about the solidity and feel of the keys, as there is a little floppy motion rather than pure in and out, and the breakout force giving you the click feedback feel that makes you realise you have ‘pushed’ that button could be a little better – but that stuff costs and the controls do work well enough. The front part that comes off is as solid as the best around, and the SD slot beneath feels crisp when you click a postage stamp of huge capacity in there. The screen is pretty and makes you wish you could see videos on it, but you can get album art displayed as one option on music if your digital source has that stuff in it (that’s what they call Metadata – posh for a picture having details of the shot embedded in it and so forth). The main knob’s influence is a bit slow – enough for there even to be comments on my YouTube video about volume control speed, but it is pretty in the dark. If fitted well, you get a cluster of wires out the back that need to go somewhere: dualheaded anti-echo microphone, GPS antenna disk, a USB socket on a wire and an iPod lead, as well as a 3.5mm stereo jack to go in the headphone socket of anything else you can think of. That’s to ignore the extra rear USB plughole that was only for a mobile broadband USB stick – now obviated as you can use your phone as a client. There’s RCA outs too.
To the likes of a normal hi-fi user, who grasps source selection and then separate controls like balance, fader and so on, even fancy time alignment and auto-EQ at the top end, this unit will be a little puzzling at first. If shown off too whizzily, you could even put off potential buyers. So, if possible, get their iPhone, iPod or iTouch plugged right on in and get them to say an artist’s name. The look on the face of Joseph and Jocelyn Public when voice control just works is delicious! For one, though, it is just like a computer. If you stop the power for an instant, it isn’t just radio going back on, it’s a delay and the ‘dee-doo-der-dum-dah-dum’ tune every time. The tune itself might be a feature you can disable, but the delay isn’t. That said, the sheer blistering all-but-utterly-irrelevant super speed with which the Asteroid then grasps my BlackBerry 9300 by the digital proverbials, thus having utter control, is awesome.
Why stock it? Where other machines speak as if it was three sorts of Norwegian connecting eventually and manually, the Parrot Android is epic. I have actually fitted this into my dash by way of choice, as it’s just a cracking unit! Mike Organ, one of the most computer literate men in all of the UK, who owns Talk Audio and does the IT for Car Audio Direct’s e-retailing site, also has one in his ride. And lastly, here’s some deep stuff that no tech review will have covered. First, that power amp onboard is mental. It made the old 4 x 50W chip in my old unit look piffling, and it’s woken my speakers up! The FM tuner is bonkers tenacious, too – I only noticed this morning when deep into the Harlequin Centre’s reinforced concrete car park, I still had radio. So it holds the FM like a toad grips goldfish in springtime. All that smarts and lovely sound quality, and there’s the apps side too, where you can get seriously next-level information services based on your location; like petrol and more, and even start to tune your music by mood. Parrot UK 0844 472 2360, RRP £299 plus fitting (varies according to vehicle). www.parrot.com

PRODUCT FOCUS /// Parking sensor update ///
Park life Chris Anderson looks at the latest parking sensors on the market
A
ccording to reports, parking sensors are the second most desirable car gadget after navigation – and at these prices, surely a big opportunity for installers. But when it comes to reversing and parking a car these days, there are also some pretty unnerving statistics. A report released earlier this year by GE Capital stated that around 40% of all accidents with company cars involve reversing while parking. It may be low speeds at which we drive during these brief moments – an estimated 1% of our time in the car is spent trying to park – but the damage can still be costly, whereas the fitment of a parking sensor kit, it can be argued, is not. The report continues to cite the main causes of car parking accidents – fewer and smaller parking spaces combined with taller, wider and longer cars, plus more distractions for the driver such as music or texting. The risks add up, so much so that in a survey conducted by Vauxhall amongst its customers to find the most useful car gadget, 29% voted for parking sensors. Andrew Smith, managing director at Cobra UK, is in agreement with their growing importance. “Parking sensors are becoming a must-have on most modern day cars,” he says. “And because our range is flush mounted with the potential to be colour coded, it forms an integral part of the car.” Speaking of potential, there must be plenty here for the mobile electronics dealer, especially when you consider that many kits are very affordable, and that by coming to your premises a customer will only pay a fraction of what they would at the car dealership. It is also one of the most requested accessories for companies with big fleets of delivery vehicles or company cars, and many could be looking to fit parking sensor kits or upgrade what they already have. For example, how about adding a camera kit or integrating with a factory-fit screen in the dash? The kits we’ve rounded up over the next couple of pages will hopefully offer some ideas.

Beat
RRP £39£49
The Beat brand from Connects2 gets our round-up of parking sensors off to an affordable start, presenting its Powerdrive 4 and 4D kits. Priced at £39, the Powerdrive 4 is a four-sensor kit that uses a buzzer to aid the driver, with a detecting angle of 60 degrees and a range of 30cm to two metres. And to make installation easy, the company even supply the relevant drillbit in the box. Plus there is a choice of matt black, black, silver and white colours. The Powerdrive 4D is more of the same, except a display unit is included to add a visual element. Connects2 0845 257 5588, www.connects2.com
RRP £359
Celsus Not just a parking sensor kit, the Paser Park Easy from UK distributors Celsus is also designed to integrate with an OEM head unit to help relay its information. A graphic image is projected onto the factory-fit display in the dash, so the driver has visual as well as audible confirmation of how he is parking. It is available in two versions too, one that displays rear sensors (four capsules), and one that displays front and rear (eight capsules). Compatible OEM units include those built for VW, Skoda, Seat, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ford and Peugeot. Celsus 01202 664390, www.celsusice.co.uk

C-KO C-KO is working on a new behind bumper parking sensor, the DSC 0370/369 – both analogue and digital versions, display and buzzer only. The product is currently being tested with selected C-KO customers and should be out soon. The sensors are said to be able to detect spare wheels and tow bars, and are supplied with all hole cutters and accessories to fit them. C-KO is also doing well with its CKO-2CAMPARK product – said to be similar to what is fitted to a BMW 5-Series at the front, supplied with two cameras that provide a wide image to eliminate blindspots on the front of the car when pulling out or parking. A third camera can be fitted, but is not supplied. C-KO 0208 863 8333, www.c-ko.co.uk
Meta From UK distributors Vestatec, the new Meta Easy Park 2 sensor kit is now available. This is an external mount kit with such features as 1.6 metres detectable distance, five distance steps, highly sensitive and fully waterproof connectors, OEM plug-in installation, and a back-up alarm when in reverse. The sensor eyes can also be sprayed to match the bodywork colour of any vehicle. There is a discount available on this product if you order 12 or more. Vestatec 0208 867 2340, www.vestatec.co.uk
RRP £119
RRP £TBC
Parkmaster Cobra, the makers of Parkmaster, list its key features as follows: the kits are ISO 9001 and ISO 17386 (MALSO) compatible; the sensors can be adjusted for towbars, bicycle racks and rear-door-mounted spare wheels; they can be used with any vehicle type, and painted to match the body colour, and be used with Cobra’s rear view cameras and mirrors to boost awareness even further. Front and rear two- or four-eye systems are available, in sizes of 17, 22 and 25mm, with angled pods. Cobra UK 01932 772400, www.cobravehiclesecurity.co.uk
Parksafe
RRP £59
Parksafe is pushing two sensor kits at present, with the PS740 launched earlier this year at MEN Expo, and PS00674. The PS740 is an intelligent four-eye solution with angled heads for more accuracy, with self test, anti-hook and spare wheel functions, and the option of a separate add-on display, purchased separately. The sensors can be painted to match any body colour. The PS00674, meanwhile, does include a 3.5 inch monitor that turns on automatically when reversing, then it pretty much does everything the PS740 offers. Veba RRP £49£129
36 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
Armour Automotive reports that its Veba range of parking sensors is growing rapidly, and fast becoming one of the most comprehensive in the UK. Providing wired, wireless, bumper-fit and colour-coded options, the range is supported by an extensive line-up of camera systems too. The numberplate kit, AVRSNP, is one of the easiest installs going, containing three sensors, an LED display and buzzer built into a single bar. Armour Automotive 01420 487110, www.armourauto.com

Celsus ICE held two training days at the end of July, with guest speakers from Paser and Digital Radio UK. Chris Anderson reports
J
ust as the Olympics were getting under way at the end of July, UK distributor Celsus ICE waded in with an event of its own, introducing the Installing Profit Roadshow – two training days held at separate locations near London, featuring guest speakers from Paser and Digital Radio UK. Dealers packed out the meeting rooms on both days, with the first taking place at the Ramada near Gatwick and the second at the Mercure London Watford. Celsus’s director of business development, Chris Bennett, kicked off proceedings, with two segments entitled ‘The cost of doing business’ and ‘attachment opportunities’. This was good motivation for the dealers present, full of useful ideas on how to boost business. “On your way here today, how many people did you see driving with white headphones in?” asked Chris. “That’s your market – if they listen to music in the car, and it’s on their iPod, show them they can integrate it with their head unit.” Entertaining everybody with the occasional YouTube clip to help enforce the main points, Chris drew comparisons between the mobile electronics industry and some of the larger companies out there. “Be an attachment seller,” he said. “If somebody comes in for a head unit or speakers, tell them it gets better with the right cables or sound deadening, keep it going and stop squeezing your profit – look at McDonald’s, they are the biggest attachment seller in the world and will always ask if you want fries with that.”

Next up was a section hosted by Digital Radio UK, which as Chris pointed out is very important for dealers to be involved in. Laurence Harrison presented this on the first night, with Sam Bonham on hand for the second. Both gave an update of the development of digital radio, how car audio has played a big part in recent advertising campaigns, and what the latest might be on a potential switchover date. There was also a recap of the benefits of digital radio that dealers can pass on to customers. “The government will probably announce a switchover date next year, and also announce a certification mark that can be applied to product and potentially installation services,” said Sam. “This is a
This was good motivation for the dealers present, full of useful ideas on how to boost business message to consumers to build confidence in the switchover.” After a quick break, it was time to meet Gianluca Pedrazzi and Manuel Bregolin from Paser, who had both journeyed over from Italy for the event. Gianluca’s father had actually started the company some 20 years earlier selling alarms, but this has since branched out to include modules and kits for all kinds of in-car devices, now distributed in the UK by Celsus. As Chris pointed out, he likes working with Paser because they share the same added-value philosophy. If a dealer needs a particular Paser device for a certain car and it isn’t currently in the range, the factory in Italy will look into it and sometimes turn one around in as little as six weeks. “It’s important in this market to be quick in finding a solution,” said Gianluca. This was also an opportunity to look in detail at some of the new Paser products on
Celsus and Paser presented new products the way, and available soon through Celsus’s dealer network. Highlights included Navimusic, which is a module that connects to a portable navigation device and plays the audio through the car’s speakers, and BlueBack, which links factory Bluetooth to aftermarket products. ParkEasy is another module, linking an aftermarket parking sensor kit to a factory display, while MediaDAB will add digital radio functionality to an OEM head unit. There was news of some truly innovative products too, such as the Paser SKT170, which is essentially a plug and play tyre pressure monitoring system. It’s an easy fit and can be controlled from the steering wheel stalk, with the case for purchase to the customer being that with the correct tyre pressure they might even save money on fuel. Paser Maestro was another product revealed at the event, offering iPod, Aux in and USB connections to an OEM head unit in a single solution. A list of car companies that Paser works with was shown, and it is clear that the Italian brand has made its products compatible with a lot of the standard technology found in most manufacturers’ cars. The technical support manager for Celsus, Jon Griggs, was also on hand to talk dealers through the finer points of each unit and their installation requirements, before adding that he has been working on a number of video tutorials, now uploaded to YouTube and that can be accessed via the Celsus website. For any confusion surrounding a particular product, just log on. But in all, it was a packed two days, presenting some great new products and business ideas. FEATURE /// GOING GREEN ///
Going green How green thinking can be profitable to your business now and in the future
T
he words ‘green’ or ‘environmentally friendly’ can strike a strange note with many people. Often their very mention can be subliminally translated as ‘more expensive’ or ‘lower quality’. But the green movement has been running for a long time and this really shouldn’t be the case now. Being green is a smart thing and something that can both save you money and make you a more attractive retailer. In fact, when it comes to supplier companies, unless they can show prospective clients a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report then many companies won’t deal with them. These CSR reports outline all the ways the supplier gives something back, ie how they work in their community, days they contribute to charity, how much they recycle, whether they buy raw product from sustainable sources and so on. This is the high end of things, but it shows how much emphasis companies put on green thinking, because they know it’s both financially beneficial and also good for their corporate image, and hence good for attracting customers. And if it’s good enough for them...
Similarly, LED lighting is becoming more popular, even in industrial use, providing longer life, brighter light and around 65% less energy use. For workshop use, this could be a great way to ditch those old fluorescent tubes. Then there’s the obvious move; turn off electrical items when you’re not using them. A careful look at what actually needs to be on, and what you can turn off when you close the door at night, might reveal a lot of ways you can cut energy use down with no effect on your day-to-day business. Heating can also be a factor, just as it is at home. If you don’t need it then don’t use it, and if you normally like installing with the garage doors open, just consider how much heat you’re losing from the premises. Again, it’s common sense, but sometimes the things you do at home get forgotten when you get to work. Recycling is another area to consider, primarily for the environmental benefits. But you may also find that there are things you waste or throw away that could be used still or even reused, saving you money in the process. There are measures you can take to go even further, like looking at how much paper you use and
Making green changes now could set your business up for a very bright, sustainable and responsible future
may wonder how the mobile electronics market can benefit, but there are options. Navigation with green routing is an obvious starting point. Imagine a window display focussing on the cost saving of this mode with nice green leaf logos plastered on the shop front. The general public may look at your shop and think you’re for petrolheads, techno geeks and bass maniacs, and they may be right. But a tactic like this would begin to change perceptions, appeal to their wallets and green consciousness, and maybe convince them to walk through your door for the first time. Perhaps once inside you can tell them about how correct tyre pressures are important for fuel efficiency and how tyre pressure monitors could be a good option for them. Considering you deal with cars, giving out leaflets on the benefits of green driving could further heighten the perception of you as a responsible retailer.
THE FUTURE ECO-CONSCIOUS So, when was the last time you took a look at your premises and gave it a green assessment? If you’ve been there for a while then you may well have become complacent about your fixtures, fittings and habits, and not changed to the type of money-saving green behaviour you’ve more than likely adopted at home. Lighting is one key area to look at. Low energy light bulbs can use as much as 80% less electricity than traditional bulbs. If you have a lot of lights on while at work imagine how that can add up over hours, days, weeks and months. While there’s initial cost in the replacement, the savings should make up for it.
40 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
whether you can do more digitally (did you know there are even ‘eco fonts’ you can download that use less ink and can make a cartridge last three or four times longer?), and even doing things like fitting different glass to your shop windows that help regulate temperatures more. These are the main things you could implement now to save you money, but they can also start to build your green credentials… and that may be more important in the future.
GREEN SELLING Social and environmental responsibility continues to become more important, and many more products in the future will be geared to being environmentally conscious. At first you
Now a word of caution. The green movement could continue to ultimately have some crazy influence on the automotive market, but a lot of it could prove beneficial to the mobile electronics retailer. Electric vehicles, for example, filled with electronics and offering things like charging points – that may be a product you could become involved with one day. Car sharing may also prove to be more prevalent, so the hands-free kits that can pair multiple phones or other devices with any car will become bigger sellers. Keeping an eye on these future streams of revenue, combined with making green changes now, could set your business up for a very bright, sustainable and responsible future. Because ultimately, green is the future.

want to add bluetooth to a pre-owned Ford? The new novero retrofit kits, available now from Daltec, add functionality and resale value – and are easy to fit too
C
assette tapes that once revolutionised in-car audio entertainment were driven out of the dashboard by the CD revolution. Now in-car CD players are poised to follow a similar path as Ford and other automotive companies respond to customer demand for all-digital systems with increased connectivity. “In-car entertainment technology is moving digital more rapidly than almost any other element of the vehicle experience,” says Sheryl Connelly, global trends and futuring manager of Ford Motor Company. “The in-car CD player – much like pay telephones – is destined to fade away in the face of exciting new technology.” So if you have a Ford model, how can you help it keep up with the latest technological developments? Daltec is a company that believes it may have found an answer. “I am delighted to announce the launch of the novero BVC (Bluetooth Voice Connectivity) retrofit for Ford,” says Peter Dallas, Daltec’s managing director. “I am sure that many installers and dealerships reading this will be pleased to see this Ford kit arrive in time for the new registration. Daltec is the official novero distributor in the UK. Call us today to ensure we have the right size of advanced order to meet your needs.” Daltec is committed to delivering the very best in vehicle electrical solutions from around the world to the trade. With over six years of experience of the market Daltec is well positioned to serve its customers. “We can help you find the best solutions for your customers and provide all the parts you need to complete the job quickly, with overnight delivery,” Peter adds.
The new Novero kit Novero has been manufacturing BVC systems for several years, and now Ford has given permission for novero to sell the fully compatible retrofit Bluetooth kits for a wide range of its models. Daltec will be selling two kits. One will be an upgrade kit for cars with microphones and harnessing already fitted, but would like to enjoy the additional features. The second

is the full BVC kit, with all the components needed to complete the job.

The retrofit kit adds Bluetooth to compatible Fords
The new line-fit-quality novero kit introduces the Bluetooth interfacing to the Ford system, including full phone functionality and music playback. The features depend on the functions and potential of the fitted head unit. For Sony and navigation units with a voice button on the remotes, the kit will: activate the phone and music function by voice or stereo control; access phone functions, including phonebook, missed calls and last number dialled; provide information on the stereo display; play music via USB (iPhone/iPod cable or Memory Stick) with full artist, album and song details; provide A2DP music playback for the C-Max, Focus, Kuga and Transit Connect only. For 6000CD, Sony and navigation units that do not have a voice button on remotes or with no remotes installed, all control is via the stereo.
Build your business with Daltec Increasingly, car buyers are making their purchasing decisions on smartphone Bluetooth compatibility. The installation of a novero kit ensures that Fords originally without Bluetooth remain desirable. Join Daltec’s list of recommended installers and be featured on our new website, bringing you fresh leads. You will also be able to sell from our wide selection of hands-free car kits, camera systems and parking sensors, plus the full range of workshop essentials and lighting from famous brands, all at fantastic prices. Cobra UK has said that its speed limiter, available to company fleets, could help reduce van fuel costs by as much as 37%. In an independent test, the brand fitted a Volkswagen Transporter Sportline diesel van (shown) with the limiter, so the speed could not exceed 56mph. After a 26-mile trip with varied terrain, the van is said to have achieved 43.61 miles to the gallon.
When the same van without the limiter attempted the same journey, it only recorded 32.01. That meant a £16.86 saving on this trip alone, and nearly £1,686 if the van travelled 260,000 miles in a year. To find out more and discuss pricing, call the number below. Tracker’s fine mesh Sticky business While the technology being fitted to cars develops, the tools required by installers often don’t – especially something as simple as masking tape, which has probably not changed in decades. But 3M has just unveiled its Scotch Tape 3030 Premium Auto Refinish Masking Tape, designed with the automotive trade in mind. It promises superior holding power even on problem surfaces, leaving no residue, it is said to be solvent and paint resistant, and will even withstand temperatures up to 100°C. “Many of the operatives we talked to said they were quite happy with the standard tape,” says 3M’s Darren Lansley, “but they had simply got used to working with a standard product. It is effective, more cost-efficient, and will bring time savings to the job.” www.3Mbodyshop.co.uk

Tracker’s recently launched Mesh Network is said to be helping to crack down on car crime in London. Any vehicle fitted with Tracker SVR can use Mesh, which essentially acts as a listening device – if a vehicle fitted with Tracker Plant or Tracker Locate technology passes a vehicle that has been reported stolen and fitted with Tracker SVR, a signal is sent to Tracker and forwarded to police, even if the stolen car is hidden in a garage, container or underground car park. The driver who has detected the stolen vehicle will be unaware that he has done so. The Mesh Network recently helped to recover a Porsche in north London. “We picked up 12 Mesh signals, each leading the police closer and closer to the thieves,” says Tracker’s Stuart Chapman. www.tracker.co.uk

Owners of electric or hybrid vehicles can now apply for a free home charging unit from POD Point, the UK’s leading electric vehicle charging company – provided they live in East Anglia, and the East or West Midlands. The charging unit in question is the Solo 2, which has built-in GPRS technology to allow two-way communication with an online account, so drivers can monitor how much energy they use, remote lock the charge point, or set charging schedules from a laptop or smartphone. The charging point and its installation is paid for via the government’s Plugged-In Places scheme, and is said to be worth over £1,000. Contact POD Point for details. KWIKFIT
Kwik stats A survey recently carried out by KwikFit shows how family entertainment in the car has changed from games such as I-Spy to music and video. It was found that 68% prefer electronic devices, with just 39% playing traditional in-car games. With electronic devices, 40% prefer iPods, 39% personal games devices, and 36% mobile phones. Families in the West Midlands and Scotland are the biggest fans of traditional games, with almost half playing them, while only a third in the Eastern Counties will bother. How does that compare with if you’re a car audio dealer in these regions, we wonder? Is it a market for those already interested, or a mine of people to be converted? www.kwik-fit.com

INSTALL GUIDE /// VW POLO ///
iO Play 2 kit INSTALL GUIDE Get music streaming and phone calls via Bluetooth
T
he next generation of iO’s innovative handsfree kits has arrived. The new releases – the iO PLAY 2 and iO TALK 2 – introduce a number of unique features and improvements. The kits are surprisingly easy to fit too, with an iO PLAY 2, designed for both Bluetooth handsfree and A2DP music streaming, installed in a 2009 VW Polo MkIV on this very page. Following this guide demonstrates the simplicity of integrating the kit with an OEM system, and the features involved. (1) The basic iO PLAY 2 kit, straight out of the box. Visible is the ISO harness, with the main module in front. Other key items include the microphone, rotary controller, and removable OLED display and mounting bracket. There are also cables for directly wiring in and charging an iPod, an Aux in socket, and a USB cable to help with software updates. Also note the over-moulded sockets for better connections, extra-long cables to ease installation, plus adhesive pads, and stickers to cover screw holes. Everything is provided to give as neat an installation as possible. (2) The first job is to remove the head unit on the car, and then work out the best locations for all of the required items. By removing the Polo’s glovebox, a small cubby hole on the left-hand side was found. Placing the main module here means it will sit flat, and is far enough away from the fans or the radio to risk interference. Also, the USB socket is accessible by unclipping the side trim panel, making software updates easy. Look for a similar place on other makes of car. Now connect the main ISO harness to the SOT lead of the car. 52 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
(3) Probably the trickiest part of the install is feeding the additional cabling through the hole left by the head unit to the back of the trim – a set of Autoleads cable routing tools can help here. On this particular vehicle there is no ignition supply to the head unit, so this is taken care of with the SOT lead by way of a fly cable, running it down to the cigarette lighter, as this is intended to be a power source anyway. An alternative connection would be to pick up ignition power directly from the fuse box via one of Autoleads’ spur fuses without the need for cutting or soldering. The fly cable is soldered and insulated with tape. (4) The position for the rotary controller was decided next. Just in front of the gearstick, the driver can control all of the system’s functions easily and safely. The pre-cut adhesives on the underside of the controller hold it in place, and by undoing a few screws the cable will run under the trim. (5) Next is the mount for the OLED display. The removable button blanks in the dash of the Polo pop out easily, and making a small indent at the base of one was enough to run the super slim cable through. The adhesive on the back of the flexible screen mount holds it in place, and the curvature of its design will match any surface. (6) Popping out the overhead light is enough to get the microphone in behind, with the cable being run under the trim, through the A pillar, down to the main module. (7) Cables now run from the microphone, the controller and the display. It’s time to connect these all to the main module, along with the cables for iPod, USB and Aux in. Cable ties and tape

keep things neat. Also note the cable tie brackets at each corner of the box module, for a secure installation without drilling. (8) With all of the trim panels and head unit put back, the system is now ready for use. Turning on with the ignition, it’s possible to connect two phones at once via Bluetooth (with up to five stored in the memory), stream music via an iPod or directly connect and charge it, plus access your phonebook and have the music muted when a call comes in, or a text read out using text-to-speech technology. A navigation system can be connected via the Aux in
and work in the same way, and the iO PLAY 2 won’t necessarily interfere with the audio from a factory parking sensor kit either. A built-in 180W Class D amp gives the sound a boost, while the built- in DSP allows you to tailor to your taste. Another nice touch is the iO ZooM music search for the iPod, jumping through the letters of the alphabet, and groups of artists or song titles, rather than the entire list. Autoleads has a range of adaptors specifically designed to work the iO kit via OEM steering wheel controls. For more info on iO PLAY 2 and other kits, call UK manufacturer and distributor ArmourAutomotive on 01420 487110. Also see www.my-io.com
